Six-year-old Grace Batty wore her poppy with pride at yesterday’s Anzac service in Stoke, in remembrance of all four of her great-grandparents who served in the war.

She and her sister, Charlotte, were just two of many young people who attended services around Nelson yesterday.

Three of their great-grandfathers served in WW1, and their greatgrandmother served in WW2, and they say they “like everything” about attending Anzac Day services.

“I think it’s important to remember all the men and woman who fought in the war,” says eleven-year-old Charlotte.

Southern Link groups rally support Feedback on the Southern Link Investigation closed on Sunday, and groups who are both for and against the controversial new road made a mad, last-minute dash last week to prompt Nelsonians to have their say.

Anti-link lobby group Nelsust sent out a chain email last week, urging people to

send their feedback against the link in to NZTA, as well as asking people to visit the ‘Stop the Southern Link’ Facebook page.

The group’s spokesperson, Peter Olorenshaw, urged the importance of “getting as many people as possible feeding back against the Southern link” and asked people to forward the email to “any and every

“It’s certainly something I was brought up with and I want my children to remember,” she says. “Otherwise, it fades away.”

The strong numbers of younger Nelsonians attending ceremonies is something that has been welcomed by RSA Nelson Marlborough Westland district president Derek Nees.

“It’s very encouraging to see the younger generations attending and every year we see more and more younger people turning up to services,” says Derek.

“Those are the people we have to get marching alongside us, as the day is coming when we won’t be there to march.”

A “peep hole” in a Tahunanui beach toilet cubicle has been patched up after a man was seen spying on a member of the public using the men’s toilets last Wednesday.

The hole in The Nelson City Council-owned toilet block was fixed last Thursday morning by a council contractor, after the incident was posted on the Nelson Snippets Facebook page – attracting over 200

comments and over 300 shares.

The person said they were in the cubical, when they saw a man in his 50s with wrinkles around his eye, looking straight at him through the hole.

Alec Louverdis, group manager infrastructure at the council says that they were made aware of the hole on Thursday morning, but can’t speculate about how long it was there for.

“The contractor who cleans the toilets also looks out for damage and maintenance issues

and fixes minor problems as required,” he says. “That means damage like this is usually picked up quickly.”

He says it is an “occasional” issue in toilets throughout Nelson.

Nelson police spokesperson Barbara Dunn says they have received notification of the incident. “We are not aware of any other incidents,” she says.

“Police encourage people to report these sorts of incidents at the time.”

Age Concern manager Sue Tilby says many of the primary care givers are people over 80 who are looking after their partner. She says they need support because it's "a 24-7 job that can be very lonely" and often results in people becoming "socially isolated and frustrated".

"I have done some relief care-giving when we have been short of volunteers and you see the joy on the faces of the primary care giver when they are able to get out. It gives you an incredible feeling."

Wendy says Age Concern trains, supervises and supports all relief carers, who are thoroughly "vetted" before they can start.

Age Concern also introduces relief carers to the clients and their fulltime carer, to make sure everyone is happy with the support arrangements.

Wendy stresses that volunteer relief carers are "companions" and are not required for any nursing duties.

Although relief carers are voluntary, Wendy says they receive a contribution to their costs.

Stolen shade sail returned after article The shade sail that was stolen from the Tasman Great Taste Trail near Harley Rd earlier this month has been returned by an “anonymous receiver” who handed it into Nelson Police on Thursday.

Man jailed for disturbing Facebook message: A local man is facing 11 months in jail after sending a disturbing video to a woman via Facebook. Under the new act, offences of this kind are punishable by up to two years imprisonment or $50,000 fine.

Reporting team grows again Locally Owned and Operated

The Weekly just keeps on growing.

Almost 11 years after the Waimea Weekly was founded in Richmond and six since the Nelson Weekly first started publishing, the locally-owned media group has just employed another journalist to keep up with demand.

The latest addition to the team is sports editor Jacob Page.

“I’m looking forward to getting to know people in the community and sharing their stories with our readers.”

Weekly editor Andrew Board says the appointment was made due to the growth of the papers. “Because our advertisers are getting great results they continue to buy space in the papers, which means we also have more space for news as we increase in size. That has put a strain on our existing editorial team so we we’ve decided to increase it again.

“Jacob is a great addition; he has a strong background as a sports journalist who has broken many top stories. I’m sure local

athletes and sporting organisations will be delighted to work with him.”

The Weekly – which is the only locallyowned newspaper group in the region – now has six journalists across its three brands.

Wairua Warriors hand money to Harold Harold the Giraffe from the Life Education Trust made a visit to Wairua Fitness on Friday.

Amidst the kettlebell squats, tyre flipping and general horseying around, Harold and Nelson Tasman Life Education Trust chair Michelle Fitzgerald were given $5550 by the team at Wairua Fitness.

The money donated to the trust was raised at the challenging Wairua Warrior obstacle race earlier this month.

Michelle says the donation is amazing.

“It’s great to be involved with

something local and without the input and generosity of Wairua and the other organisations that support us, we wouldn’t be able to get around the schools with the classroom and deliver the program that we have.

“It costs about $18 per kid and we see about 5500 children a year," she adds.

"It's a lot of coin, but this support is incredible and it will go towards helping us pay our educator and updating the classroom.”

Event organiser Greg Witika says he and the team are happy

they could support the trust.

“Last year we only managed to raise $2000, so we’re stoked we could double that and hopefully next year we’ll go even bigger,” says Greg.

“We chose Life Education Trust because it teaches kids good life skills and most of our members are parents. It’s a great cause and all the money raised stays local.”

Greg says the $5000 came from registrations and the remaining money was donated by King Salmon who donated all their proceeds from selling bagels on the day.

Poppy Day, Tuesday, March 29: After taking to the streets for Poppy Day on Friday, April 15, Nelson RSA was pleased to raise an initial total of $14,770. The overall total is still to be calculated as their fundraising also included 40 collection boxes which were distributed around Nelson businesses and their stall at the Nelson Saturday market over the weekend. All money raised through Poppy Day stays in the area and is used for welfare costs for returned servicemen, or their widows or dependents.

Nelson Civic Choir, Tuesday, April 12: Nelson Civic Choir has received a handful of donations towards their fundraising campaign for New York, but is still in need of support to reach their goal. The group was invited to audition for the premier of a new musical piece by composer Sir Karl Jenkins, and was then selected to take part in the concert which will be held at New York’s Carnegie Hall in January next year. They are the only choir from New Zealand going and will be amongst several other choirs from around the world. Kettlebell Competition, Tuesday, April 19: Saturdays Kettlebell competition saw 11 athletes compete, three from Auckland, one from Christchurch and seven locals. Local woman Sheena Jones set a new New Zealand record with 116 reps in the 16kg Long Cycle and took out the overall Long Cycle title. She also set a New Zealand record in the 12kg Snatch with 175 reps. The Women's Long Cycle event was the highlight with four women lifting 16kg for 95 reps plus. Other outstanding local lifters include Nikki Bowman who took first overall in the Snatch, Peter Jones who snatched 16kg for 208 reps for first place in the mens Snatch, and Shane Bowman who set a personal record in the 12kg Long Cycle. Lifters are now looking forward to training for the inaugural NZGSA national championship at the NZ Fitness Expo in July.

Kate Russell Nelson SPCA will be given a boost next month, with a local theatre company gifting them one dollar from every ticket sold for their upcoming play.

Antics Theatre Company, led by director Hugh Neill, will be performing The Hound of the Baskervilles at the Theatre Royal from May 4-7.

Neill says it’s a unique take of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s most celebrated Sherlock Holmes story, with a “manic twist.”

“It’s a wonderful spoof on the original story, but we follow the storyline pretty faithfully and it will appeal to anyone with a sense of humour who is young at heart,” he says.

“Three actors will play 15 characters between them. It goes at quite a pace and there are some ridiculously fast costume changes, which is half the fun.”

Hugh says it great to be supporting the SPCA and they have done similar shows for other organisations in the past.

After the mess Nelson transport is in, thanks to the septic seven councillors, for these councillors to tell TDC how to plan is incredible.

These councillors are hiding behind the traffic issue. Their fear is that, thanks to poor planning, much of Nelson’s central city commerce has been moving to Tasman. And now the same thing may happen to Stoke.

These councillors have to go. Otherwise Nelson ratepayers will find that there are few businesses in Nelson to pay rates, and residential rates will climb even faster than they have been as these councillors fulfil their personal spending agendas. Dan McGuire.

Artisan market to be hosted in Stoke The Stoke Memorial Hall will be filled with local and handcrafted goods this Sunday, as an Artisan Market comes to town.

With over 20 stalls on offer, including chocolates, glass art, jewellery, unique craft supplies, soaps and candles, it’s the perfect place to find a Mother’s Day gift.

The event has been organised by the Lioness Club of Nelson, who will have a stand there if people are interested in having a chat or finding out more about being a Lioness.

SAVE THE CHILDREN FAIR: Tania Maheno of Stoke purchases an item from a volunteer at the annual Save the Children Fair on Saturday. The fair, which was held at the Stoke Memorial Hall, is raising money for two specific projects that the Save the Children organisation is currently involved in. The first being in Bangladesh, involves working alongside local partners in the Daulatdia brothel to provide quality education to children there, while the second project, in the Philippines, works within schools to teach children how to prepare for and respond to natural disasters. The total amount raised through the fair isn’t known at present, but organisers were pleased with the crowds of people who came to explore and purchase a range of items, from plants and homemade produce, to clothes, books and toys. Classic carnival celebrates past and present Jessie Johnston The Tahunanui Classic Carnival was a day of sun, surf and friendly competition, coinciding with the Nelson Surf Life Saving and Nelson Boardriders club's reunion.

Unlike a competitive carnival, Saturday’s activities at Tahunanui Beach were purely for entertainment, and designed so anyone could get involved, including people from other surf life-saving clubs around the region. While those taking part were mostly the younger members of the Nelson club, ex surf life-savers and board riders watched on, remembering the old days and seeing how much things have changed since the original club was established.

"Surf life-saving in Nelson has gone through a number of reincarnations, surf life-saving started in 1932 in Nelson and at various times it faded away and restarted and it sort of existed on and off up until the 50s. Then, in about 1956, a number of other surf life-savers from other clubs around the country came here and really strongly thought they wanted to have an official club with a club house," says current Nelson Surf Life Saving president, Marcus Gardner.

The club continued this pattern until 1982 when a lack of membership forced it into recess, and not long after that the old club-

"Surf life-saving was going through a lot of changes in those days, from using reel and rope with a swimmer on the end to rescue people, to the rescue tube in the 80s and the BP inflatable boats.

That was partly how our club came about, the old Tahuna club had been dead for a short number of years, and then we had people come from out of Nelson who thought we did really need a surf life-

saving club. In those days you had to start from scratch and we started as a community rescue service, and basically grew that organisation to the point where we could get back to being an official life-saving club," says Marcus.

The reunion weekend, which started on Friday with a casual meet and greet, is the last opportunity to get all the past and present club members together.

"From the 1950s, 1960s, right through to

the early 1980s era, we've got a good spread across all the decades. We've got one or two of the early members who are in their 80s now, who were involved with the club in the 1950s when they built the original clubhouse that used to be here in the days when [membership] was really strong, and then we've got people through the 1970s up to 1980," says Marcus.

After the carnival on Saturday, which allowed past members to see how surf lifesaving has progressed, a formal dinner was held at The Boathouse.

"Its just amazing to have the stories come out and the people remember so much, it's been really interesting, and its good because it links surf life-saving right back, from where we are now, to its earlier history," says Marcus.

"A lot of them watch surf life-saving on television and things, and they just say "its not like it used to be but it looks a hell of a lot of fun, and that's the main thing, it's all about having fun and keeping the kids coming through."

The carnival included IRB racing, beach flags, board racing and swimming races.

"The club wouldn't exist without the support of the local public and businesses, we exist purely to help the community and the sport side is the fun side that we do," says Marcus.

Happy Valley

The early suburban North settlement quickly spilled over Gentle Annie into what became known as Happy Valley, now Hira and the nearby Teal and Lud Valleys. The name Happy Valley

came from the first surveyors who set up an alcohol still there to ease their solitude. One of the first settlers was sawyer Isaac Harvey on Cable Bay Road. His bullocks hauled timber over Gentle Annie on a less than easy road.

Even after she retired from competing, Claire Morgan, nee Maxfield, was always a strong supporter of Nelson DanceSport, which is why her friends and family have decided to host a ball in her memory.

"Claire discovered she had bowel cancer when her daughter was 12 weeks old, and over the next 16 months had intensive treatment and surgery.

She passed away in August 2014," says Claire's mother, Sandra Maxfield.

"Dancing friends of Claire

suggested to Pauline Harris (a friend from school and dancing) that it would be nice to have a ball in Claire's memory.

She was a dancer from 1992 and started competing when she was 15, dancing for about 14 years and retiring in 2010 following an ankle injury. She then married and had her daughter Jorja. Claire continued her involvement in dancing on the local DanceSport committee, helping organize dance parties. Dancing was a big part of her life, and it is still part of our lives."

Noel Eichbaum loves competition. He and his yacht have regularly won trophies for the most races competed in Nelson during a season, but this summer was a different story.

A desire to race in Auckland’s Coastal Classic saw him exceed his own expectations in the event, only for bad weather to force him to wait several weeks before he could sail home.

He missed a majority of the local season.

His effort in finishing second on the line and fourth overall in the Costal Classic from Auckland to Russell in October was one of the high points noted at the Tasman Bay Cruiser Club’s end of season awards.

His 30-foot Murray 9.14 race cruiser Blackout battled unfavourable south-west winds for much of the race, but that wasn’t the tricky part.

“Getting home was harder,” Noel says of October expedition. “We had to wait for favourable weather and didn’t get to sail it home until December.”

Noel says the experience was amazing and a far cry from his humble beginnings as an inexperienced adult sailor.

“I’d always had an interest in sailing and the water, and I’d been overseas for my job and done a bit of various yachts around Singapore and things and decided, when I got back to New Zealand, I’d get into it more.”

Noel started in keel boats and has progressed ever since, it even made him move to Nelson.

“I was down in Nelson looking to buy a Young 88 with my wife and we just loved Nelson so much we decided to stay.

“I was originally from Christchurch but always had fond memories of Nelson from my childhood.”

Noel says, while the race in Auckland was a great experience, the planning involved and the time it took to get home meant it was unlikely he would race it again.

“We used to enter every race we could over the summer here and because we were up in Auckland so long we missed pretty much the entire summer series.

Noel says he is hesitant to part with Blackout.

“It’s such a quality boat and I believe, and so do the crew who sail it, that we still have more to learn and get out of her.”

Tasman golfers look to impress at SI age-groups SporTS Jacob Page Tasman Golf is sending a 13-strong team to the Under-16 and Under-19 South Island Junior Interprovincial in Ashburton starting tomorrow.

The team had one of its last training sessions at Nelson Golf Club with club pro Glyn Delany last week.

Tasman will put five man teams in both age groups and will compete against Canterbury Aorangi, Otago and Southland.

The best four scored for each of three rounds will go towards deciding a winner.

The event doubles as the South Island Age Group Championships for individual golfers, which is played over a three round strokeplay format.

Tasman’s two female golfers Lizzie Neale, 12, and Eve Clarke, 16, will compete in their respective girls age-group sections.

Tasman Golf development manager Chris Pugh says the team has experience, with just one debutante in 15-year-old Josh Wright, but it will be important to get used to the Tinwald course. “We’ve never won the event but we have finished second in both age groups a few times.

“We are always very strong in this age. Our boys should do well because we have some strong players here, but getting used to a

Motorcross trophy brings plenty of interest The Top of the South VMX club are holding their annual Ray Anderson Memorial Trophy and Club Champs on Sunday, May 1, at Tadmor.

This year is the 12th running of the Ray Anderson Memorial.

Ray was member of the Nelson Motorcycle Club from 1947 to when he passed away in 2003 and spent 52 years as secretary or treasurer, as well as being a member of the MNZ executive in the early 1960s. Ray received the service award medal from MNZ in 1996, and also the Nelson community service award in 2002 for long-standing and valuable contribution to the sport of motorcycling.

The Ray Anderson Memorial Classic Trophy recognises this contribution and is raced for by a different class each year, drawn on the day, which gives all senior riders the opportunity to race for the trophy.

The Mike Pero Nelson Giants veteran became the first man to play 400 NBL games yesterday when his Giants faced the Canterbury Rams at Nelson’s Trafalgar Centre.

The 42-year-old debuted in 1993 and is in his 22nd season in the league.

"It feels like it's been five minutes, not 22 seasons," he says.

Phill is the second all time leading points scorer in the NBL having gone past 7000 points this season. Only Ronnie Joyner’s 8616 points stands in front of him.

"Nelson is a special place for me, as is the Trafalgar Centre," he says. "I have so many great memories in this building and the people of Nelson have always been so loyal."

Phill says he is still enjoying the game but isn't thinking too far ahead.

"It's the old cliche, one game at a time," he says. "I've had some great memories in Nelson and hopefully there will be a few more before this season ends."

Tasman United coach gets rare ‘clean slate’ Jacob Page

New Tasman United football coach Richard Anderson is aware of how lucky he is to be in a coaching role with a clean slate.

The 29-year-old, who will coach Tasman United in its inaugural National League season, caught his first glimpse of the talent in the region on Saturday when he saw Nelson Suburbs 2-1 Mainland Premier League win over Halswell at Saxton Field.

Richard says, while the region is looking to enhance its own football identity he is looking to do the same. “This is one of those rare times as a coach that you have a clean slate,” he says.

“Usually, when a team hires a new

coach, the club is doing poorly, a manager or coach has been fired or moved on to other things.”

He says the role is an opportunity for him to transition into a head coaching position.

“I’ve had the opportunity to do player development roles in England and then went over and did a similar thing with the Cook Islands while being an assistant to the national side.

“When this role came up I thought it was time to step up out of that shadow.”

Richard says the idea of being part of so many club firsts is exciting.

“The key thing is player recruitment now and getting the players in who can play an entertaining style of football that

draws people to supporting us and a style the players enjoy playing.”

Richard says he is also on the lookout for a goal keeping coach and is keen to utilise sports science and match analysis in his backroom staff.

Richard’s contract with Cook Islands Football ends in early July which is when his focus will become solely Tasman United. “We will play a style of football that will excite our fans and play with pride for the shirt, and hopefully that will lead to good performances and success.”

The National League competition is due to kick off in November.

Former Makos skipper keen to push basics The Nelson Rugby Club will have the services of former Tasman Makos captain Andrew Goodman for a junior skills session on Thursday.

The event at Neale Park will also have senior Nelson Rugby Club players and coaches involved in providing the basic skills for

rugby. Andrew says it’s a chance to improve basic skills like catching, kicking and passing, before the season starts.

The day-long event is a first for the Nelson club and something Andrew hoped would continue.

“I think a lot of clubs are looking to be more proactive with training

days like this and it’s good to see Nelson taking that step.

“It’s also a good chance for kids to run around and give parents a break during the school holidays.

Andrew says the topic of concussion would also be on the agenda. “Concussions are obviously a big issue in sport at

the moment and younger players often suffer from them because of poor technique, like getting your head in the wrong place when attempting to take a player down.

“If we can show kids safe and effective techniques then it’s a good thing.”

coordinator Grant Crossett says it’s an exciting day and hopefully something which will become a regular fixture of the club’s preseason calendar.

The session runs from 9.30am to 3pm at a cost of $20.

Nelson clubs flex muscles in Tasman Trophy Having recently moved to Nelson from Dunedin, one of the first things on our list was to join in on a fishing club. The one club that stood out for us was the Dawnbreakers fishing club which had a good family vibe to it.

We recently joined the club for a trip to Okiwi bay where we met a number of members for the first time, one member who helped me and the family out with the new fishing techniques that we had not used before- having only really done lake fishing and trawling for salmon in the Dunedin harbour and needed all the help we could get.

The following weekend, back in Nelson, the same member, Nick Roberts, invited me for a day fish out in his boat to show me some fishing spots and put my new-found fishing skills to the test.

We headed out to Cable Bay where we anchored up, set up our burley and settled down for a fish.

Nick reel in one fish after another, wondering what I was doing wrong.

Eventually, my line with a pink flasher rig and a chunk of pilchard on screamed off, and after about a 15 minute fight I landed my first-ever snapper (21lb 4 ounces, just saying).

I did feel sorry for Nick who didn’t know whether to shake my hand or push me overboard, but nevertheless, thanks to Nick for the day out and putting us on the spot.

Nelson club rugby teams will look to continue their dominance over their Marlborough neighbours last weekend in the Tasman Trophy.

Marist, Wanderers, Waimea Old Boys and Stoke all recorded wins, while Nelson drew with Renwick and Kahurangi lost to Waitohi away from home.

It was frustration for both Nelson and Renwick when the fulltime whistle blew at Trafalgar Park.

Nelson coach Kade Heke admitted his team did not make use of the breeze at their backs in the second half, despite fighting back from 12-0 down early in the first half after being reduced to 13 men at one stage.

First half tries to industrious No 8 David Egelstaff and dynamic fullback Tima Faingaanuku got them into the sheds all even at halftime.

Kade says his team simply didn’t execute the game plan after the break.

“I don’t think we gelled as well as we could have and didn’t use the wind as well as we could have."

Much of the attacking play went through Faingaanuku and centre Amos Pogia.

While they looked good on attack, Nelson backs were guilty of going in too high to contact and turned the ball over in good field position several times.

“It’s been frustrating, we came out here looking to make a statement and a draw doesn’t really do that," says Kade.

“It’s better than a loss, but there’s plenty to work on for us."
