Concerns over liquor store for Stoke

A Nelson health promotion organisation says a proposed new off-license liquor store for Stoke will do more harm than good, and is urging people to object to Nelson City Council by next Wednesday. The Blackbull Liquor chain has applied for a license to operate the new bottle store at 201 Songer St, seven days a week from 9am to 10pm. If the license is approved, it will become the seventh offlicense within a 1.5 km radius, with the others being the Turf Hotel, Turf Liquorland, Stoke Liquorland, Countdown, New World and McCashins. The site, next to the Mad Butcher, is also within walking distance of five schools, as well as pre-schools, a toy library, sports stadium, community hall and several parks and reserves. Rosey Duncan, a health promoter at Health Action Trust, says that another low-priced, easily accessible liquor store in Stoke will only contribute to alcohol-related harm in the community. “The more alcohol sales outlets, the easier it is for people to purchase alcohol,” says Rosie.

The proposed site for Blackbull Liquor in Stoke. Insert: Health Action Trust health promoter, Rosey Duncan. “And it will be the local community that bears the brunt with more pressure on local services to cope with the related problems.” Meanwhile, Nelson City Councillor Matt Lawrey says the application highlights “a dangerous and gaping hole” in the city’s licensing laws, with there currently being no grounds for the Nelson District Licensing Committee to reject the application based on an increased density of outlets. “Under current legislation, the only way you could prevent a liquor store from opening on the basis of density is if you had a rule about it in your Local Alcohol Policy, which the council are still finalising.” Matt says he suspects there are plenty of people in Stoke who

would object to another offlicense in the area. “Stoke is currently experiencing some challenging behaviour from some younger people. Opening a new store selling cheap RTDs until 10pm is unlikely to help that situation. “Under the current rules, the best chance people have to stop it is to convince the licensing committee that it would have a negative impact on the neighbourhood.” Anyone wanting to object to the application has until 2 May, and can do so via Nelson City Council’s website, emailing r e g u l at o r y @ n c c . g o v t . n z , writing to Alcohol Licensing, PO Box 645, Nelson 7010, or by visiting Civic House, 110 Trafalgar St.

Nelmac worker clocks up 42 years Kate Russell Reporter

kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz

It was June 1976 when Phil McIntosh got the call. Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody had just gone gold, Mel Courtney was Nelson’s MP and 23-year-old Phil had just landed a new job as the assistant caretaker at the Stoke Memorial Hall. Forty-two years on and Phil is still mowing lawns for Nelmac, and it’s pretty hard to fathom the amount of grass he’s collected in his catcher. But the dedicated worker is turning 65 next month and will be handing over the keys to his trusty Walker mower on 18 May. Once a lolly maker at Griffins and then a forestry worker, Phil says he was pleased for a career change. “Back in 1976 the work came under the Nelson council, until it changed to Nelmac in 1995,” he says. After his stint in Stoke, Phil went on to look after the tennis courts and croquet lawns on Halifax St. “Then I went back onto mowing again, followed by a garden-

This includes mowing Anzac Park, Queens Gardens, Melrose House, Miyazu, Broadgreen Gardens and some private jobs. “I also do all the pensioner cot-

tages and some work at the marina, and over the year’s we’ve been located all over Nelson, including Vickerman St, the old fire station, Haven Rd and now Bullen St in Tahunanui. “So I’ve been around,” he says. His mowing career has had him working 12 hour days in the busy

periods and he’s seen “quite a few” people come and go, had a few breakdowns and mown over some “interesting” objects. “It’s changed a lot. The mowing crew was a lot smaller than what it is now. Overall it’s got bigger, the use of technology and the way we do timesheets – but that’s an-

other story.” Phil has just taken six weeks annual leave to “practice” getting used to retirement. “I’m looking forward to it. We’ve got a campervan and we’re planning on doing some overseas trips and a cruise and I can spend more time with my grandson.” He says there are plenty of things he’s loved about the job. “It’s been good outside work, there’s variation and they just let you get on with it. He also says it’s been rewarding. “I always get people coming up and making nice comments. We were edging along the Maitai riverbank last week and the comments you get there – it’s fantastic and makes you feel better.” But it’s the people that have made the job for him, and he says he’ll never forget the way the staff looked after him when his son passed away in 1996. “They’ve been marvellous. I’ve enjoyed the people I’ve worked with - they’re a good bunch. The banter has been good. You give them rubbish and they throw it straight back. “It’s been as good as gold.”

Container development stalls after ‘red tape’ delays Charles Anderson

The local developer behind trying to build a shipping container mall on Bridge St says he is close to giving up on the idea after excessive red tape and bureaucracy threatens to make it too difficult to bring to life. Galen King first proposed Kirby Lane in 2016 and hoped it would soon become a new laneway precinct in the heart of Nelson - complete with boutique shops, cafés, eateries, coworking space, event spaces, offices and even a children’s playground. But in his submission to the city’s Long Term Plan (LTP),

Galen says the project has stalled after “onerous requirements” around fire safety and seismic strengthening did not make the costs possible to bear. Instead, Galen went ahead and surfaced the laneway so some vehicles can still park on it and to create a “canvas” for future development. While he says he is grateful for many of the Nelson City Council staff and councillors who have been “fantastic, enthusiastic, encouraging and supportive”, the “bureaucracy and red tape of the resource management plan and the building code have put road block after road block in our way”.

Submissions on the LTP closed yesterday and one of the main focuses of it was trying to create a “smart little city” that promoted a “healthy, vibrant and thriving CBD”. The plan’s discussion document reads: “We want our city centre to enrich and build our local culture - the bustling meeting place for everyone who lives, works and visits here.” Galen is now leading this project from afar as he has moved with his young family to New York City for a few years. “At times, I have to question why I’m continuing to pour my heart, energy, and money into this small

project back in Nelson. It all just feels too hard. We are close to giving up on the container idea.” He says that perhaps there are better ways to create micro retail spaces and shipping containers aren’t the best medium after all. However, he says the vision for the project has always been to be simple, cost-effective, welldesigned, and unpretentious. “I never wanted it to become a massive development.” Galen says he is keen to support and encourage small businesses and is open to having events and food carts in the space – or even moving the Nelson Farmers Market there.

But he says the project needs support from the council to make this happen. “It is just too hard jumping through hoops for a project that really is small in scale and, frankly, difficult to justify economically.” Galen says he is not necessarily asking for funding although it looks more likely that Kirby Lane will be more of a community project than an economic development. “We are pushing ahead despite all the bump and roadblocks, but it would be nice if this final phase was a little smoother. Or the risk is that nothing happens. And that would be a shame.”

Mother ‘forever victimised’ by man who killed daughter A Nelson mother whose daughter was killed by a man while in witness protection says she will be “forever victimised” by the legacy he has wrought. Jordan Young, a man with many aliases, was jailed for five years for manslaughter after causing a crash that killed 20-year-old Debbie Ashton near Nelson in 2006. Last week, he was refused parole for a fourth time, relating to separate burglary charges. Speaking from her Nelson home Judy Ashton, Debbie’s mother, said she was pleased to hear Young had been denied parole. “Since he went away for Debbie’s death this is probably his third go at going back in [to prison] and

I can’t see it. I’m very sceptical that he will come out and not re-offend again.” Young appeared before the Parole Board this month where it was heard he had an eight-page criminal history

for offences ranging from dishonesty convictions to serious drug-related offending and manslaughter. He was jailed for manslaughter under the name Jonathan Barclay after Debbie Ashton died in a head-on crash in December 2006. He had been freed on parole in July that year, having served jail time for burglary and dishonesty offences, and was relocated to Nelson with a new identity under a police witness protection programme. That October he was convicted of serious driving offences under his real name. He was caught drink-driving just days later and could have been jailed but was instead treated as

a first-time offender because the court didn’t know he was using a new identity. He was freed in April 2011 and moved to Hawke’s Bay under the name Jordan Ubertek. In August 2012 he was the driver of a BMW which turned in front of a truck in Hawke’s Bay, throwing a child from the car. He was jailed for two years

after pleading guilty to three charges of causing injury while driving under the influence of a controlled drug and one charge of breaching release conditions for the expressway accident. At a previous hearing the board was concerned about his “extensive and versatile history of offending and the part that drugs have played in it”. “The Board was also concerned about his manipulative behaviour as evidenced in his repeat convictions for attempting to pervert the course of justice.” It was determined he was at a high risk of further offending and he was denied parole. Young will next come before the Parole Board in June.

NZPIF executive officer Andrew King says the situation looks likely to continue. "There have been so many cost and regulatory increases over

TradeMe communications advisor Millie Silvester says the number of rental listings in the Nelson Tasman region has also fallen 15 per cent since March 2017. She puts the average rent price in March at $420 compared with $400 in February. Nikayla-Grace Gleeson says she

Kate Russell Have you ever dreamed of living in the tower of a 165 year old castle? Well, here’s your opportunity. Two lavish suites and one apartment are coming up for rent in Nelson’s historic Warwick House on Brougham St at the end of May for four months. It’s the first time that owners Nick and Jenny Ferrier have rented out the rooms for people to live in, as it normally operates as a boutique bed and breakfast. On offer will be the upstairs ‘Tower suite’ and ‘Bayview suite’ for $350 per week, each offering a luxury bedroom, lounge, en suite, fridge, and microwave not to mention some breathtaking views. Both will have use of a kitchenette, verandas and decks, as well as the ballroom and its baby grand piano. Downstairs there is a two bedroom, self-contained apartment available for $420 per week. Nick says they want to utilize the rooms over winter, with it generally being a quieter time

It has changed hands several times – once being used as a gentleman’s boarding house. In 1941, it was divided up into five internal apartments, and remained that way for 70 years until it was purchased by Nick and Jenny in 2003, who have

lovingly restored all 35 rooms in the house. “The rooms would be perfect for professional couples or someone living in Nelson for fixed-term work – it’s not really suitable for children,” says Nick. “I think it would make for a pretty cool experience.” The two suites and apartment will be available from May – September. TREES AND POWER LINES Trees and power lines are just not compatible. • Always plant trees well away from power lines and keep branches trimmed and clear of the lines. Trees should never be allowed to come in contact with the wires. Never cut or trim a tree that could fall onto power lines or that is touching power lines. • Before you climb any tree, be sure no power lines run through it or near it. Even if power lines aren’t touching the tree, they could touch it after your weight is added to a branch. • Remember that children love climbing trees and may not see the danger of overhead wires amongst the branches.

facebook.com/FourSquareNZ Specials available South Island only from Monday 23rd until Sunday 29th April 2018 or while stocks last. Wine and beer available at stores with an off licence. Wine and beer purchases restricted to persons aged 18 years old and over.

• Keep your trees trimmed well clear of the wires, but obtain assistance or advice from your local electricity network when there is likelihood of danger to yourself or your family, or if the tree is falling against the overhead lines.

‘Enslaved’ worker on Trafalgar St

'ENSLAVED WORKER' ON TRAFALGAR STREET: Yasmeen Maria will be sewing bags for 16 hours at a time all week. The protest, which she has named ‘Enslaved by Demand’, aims to give people a real-time, tactile example of how chain-store clothing is made. Photo: Sara Hollyman.

Sara Hollyman

Yasmeen Maria is hunched over a sewing maching on Trafalgar St, dutifully sewing bags in apparent silence. Members of the public stop and start reading the vast array of information that sits in front of her. Yasmeen is spending this week re-creating the life of a Bangladeshi garment worker on a CBD footpath for all to see. The silent protest, which she has named ‘Enslaved by Demand’, aims to give people a realtime, tactile example of how chain-store clothing is made. Over the course of the week she plans to work 112 hours sewing fabric bags, which she will then sell to the public for a donation at the end of the week. To replicate the working conditions of Bangladeshi garment workers, she will not have the right to speak to passers-by, will be eating only rice-based meals, will not see her son and will only take three 10-minute breaks each day. "In the interest of total honesty - I will not be giving up coffee. I’m not sure if this is the week for a caffeine detox.” Yasmeen says she wants people to pressure the clothing industry to take responsibility for its exploitation of human life and its impact on the environment. "I aim to highlight the huge disproportionately between the wages workers receive and their quality of life verses the profits garnered by the corporate entities behind the industry, and accordingly, their lifestyles. I want people to think about and understand what it means to support chain-stores.” Yasmeen is sewing from 6am till 10pm every day until Saturday – a total of 16 hours a day. "I have never done anything for sixteen hours before. My back, eyes and neck hurt. "I am a little lightheaded. My hands are trembling.”

Apprentices nail building challenge Tom Ashley hard at work on his playhouse during the apprentice challenge which he went on to win. He said it was a “stressful” experience but lots of fun. “I can’t say I’ve built a lot of playhouses. I haven’t got kids of my own, but these skills will hopefully come in handy one day.” He says he is looking forward to representing Nelson at the national championships and is ready for any challenge. Photo: Jonty Dine.

Jonty Dine A trio of Nelson building apprentices put their tools to the test in the annual NZCB Apprentice Challenge on Saturday. Ben Oakley from Kennedy Construction, Lance Herrick from Ryan Mitchell Construction and Tom Ashley from Gary Knott/Tasman Homes were hoping to nail a children’s playhouse on Saturday and progress to the national final next month. Competitors had eight hours to construct a 1.5-metre high children’s castle playhouse, featuring a turret and working drawbridge. Apprentices were provided with durable, trade-quality timber and materials, and their structures had to meet minimum safety standards. The event was judged by Keith Langham ASAP Building Inspections LTD and Dave Gunther of Certified Builders. They assessed a range of building elements including quality of the workmanship, accuracy of measuring and cutting, assembly, and the apprentice’s ability to work to a detailed plan. Tom Ashley came out on top of the competition for having the best built playhouse. He now progresses to the final in Rotorua next month which boasts over $50,000 worth of prizes for the winner. The playhouses will be donated to local early childhood education providers.

Congratulations: Congrats to Andrea, a young Nelson woman who works for Air New Zealand. I met this person as she and her two young children were cleaning up trash left near the Maitai River by freedom campers. Volunteering their Saturday

year and followed by the aerial pest control operation, late last winter. I get that some people do not like the idea of poisoning animals, even though it is the only realistic way to rid the reserve of pests but the protests against the Sanctuary Trust and their hundreds of volunteers have become farcical. We know from other sanctuaries like Zealandia in Wellington, Maungatautari in the Waikato and Tiritiri Matangi in Auckland that these pest control pro-

Nelson Matters I am amazed at the strange conspiracy theories some people believe. The latest was at a protest recently at the Nelson Market alleging corruption at the Cawthron Institute. It is the latest chapter in the campaign against the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary. The plans for this nature sanctuary - free of rats, stoats and possums goes back more than a decade to visionaries like Derek Shaw and David Butler. grammes can be done safely and the subsequent boom in bird life is spectacular. The debate over the safety of the local pest control programme went to court three times last year and each time the judgement came down in favour of the sanctuary. The subsequent social media claims that the judges were corrupt were nutty. It was at this time that I was subject to a poison attack at the Nelson Market. The claims now are that the Cawthron Institute has fabricat-

ed the water testing results that show no risk of harm. Nelson’s Cawthron Institute is one of the most respected scientific research centres with an international reputation. The idea that it is deliberately misreporting test results to cover up for the sanctuary is bizarre. The frustration with these sorts of conspiracy theories is that their proponents believe them so deeply that no amount of evidence will change their mind. They are similar to the ‘chemtrail’ campaigners who

believe the vapour from trails in the sky left by aircraft is evidence of an international plot to poison the populace. The Cawthron Institute and Brook Sanctuary Trust are nonprofit organisations that represent Nelson at its best. I despair when smart, dedicated scientists are subject to this sort of nonsense. I hope Nelsonians will dismiss the conspiracies and recognise the good these people are doing for our community. Advt.

Rescue Helicopter receives $70k grant

POPPY DAY: Nelson man Brian Parry has been selling poppies for nine years now, and says he had a steady stream of people making donations outside Harley’s Pharmacy on Tahunanui Drive for Poppy Day. Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter Trust are $70,000 better off thanks to the New Zealand Charitable Trust. NZCT gave more than $141,000 to the region in their latest grant which came from local gaming venues Malbas Nelson, Ocean Lodge and Tapawera Hotel. The trust has been supporting rescue helicopter since 1998 and manager Paula Muddle says the grants have been invaluable to them. “Their 20 years of support has seen the service go from strength to strength including the arrival of the twin engine BK117, night vision goggle technology and a new two-person winch. “This technology and funding support has meant our workload has increased and we have been able to save more lives.” Paula says NZRHT average more than 500 flights across the top of the South Island every year. They are partly government funded but there is a shortfall. “The shortfall means each mission costs approximately $3500 and that has to come from community funding. The grant from the NZCT is vital in ensuring we continue to operate this free, world-class service for the community." NZCT communications manager Tanya Piejus says they made a total of 233 grants in March. NMRHT are hosting their open day this Sunday 28 April, which promises to be a fun-filled family day out. The open day will showcase local emergency services and the air rescue crew will give a full winching demonstration. Five children will win a scenic helicopter flight as part of the dress-up competition. Entry is a gold coin donation to go towards the air rescue service.

Veterans in their prime, an injection of young blood and an international tournament will make the local netball scene a must watch this year. The Nelson season gets underway this week with more than 3000 netballers set to take the court during the season. Nelson Netball Centre manager Lindsay Filiata says netball continues to be the biggest female participation sport in Nelson. The season will see six premier teams, 69 college, 39 senior and 46 intermediate teams compete. The senior sides will hit the court on Saturday with college kicking off on the 5th and the year fives and sixes on May 12. “By May 12, everything is up and running,” Lindsay says. The season will wrap up with the senior finals on August 26 when Stoke Sportwise will look to defend their title while Jacks OPD will be looking to go back-toback in the premier competition.

make for an exciting dynamic. “The clubs have managed to retain some exciting young talent.” She says they will generally stick with tried and true season structure. During the season, teams will play three rounds of five games each, with an automatic promotion/rel-

egation occurring at the end of each round. When in full swing, Saturday will see 122 games played on the 18 courts at Saxton. One of the highlights on the calendar will again be the second edition of the International Super Club Tournament from 1924 August.

“It’s a massive week but it’s so much fun,” Lindsay says. During the inaugural event in 2017, the city hosted teams from Wales, Trinidad and Tobago, Fiji, South Africa and Australia. The Kiwi contingent was made up of the top three ANZ Championship sides. Teams will again take a day off during the tournament to engage with the community and attend the year five and six finals. The six sides contesting the premier competition will be Richmond, Stoke, Waimea College, Nelson College for Girls, Jacks and Prices Pharmacy. Premier netball will again run on Thursday nights starting May 12. “Prices Pharmacy and Jacks are usually the stronger teams but there has been a lot of player movement this year, so teams could look quite different,” Lindsay says. Jacks are being tipped as early favourites to defend their crown. The 2017 champions will again field a strong seven including All Black sevens player Jessica Drummond and defender Kirsty Thomson fresh from trials with the Netball Mainland Beko Netball League squad.

Prices have most of their squad from last year at the defensive end with Dayna Whiting and Holly Chandler joining star shooters Shar Lowe and Chelsea Brooks. “They’ve got some real consistency about them.” Lindsay says Richmond will be the competition’s dark horses. “They are all ex-athletes so are just good sportspeople.” The two college teams will again be strong, making up for their lack of experience with youthful exuberance. “Waimea College have put in a lot of preseason work and it showed at the Gearaldine Hobson tournament, they had a really good hit out.” NGC have lost a lot of key year 13 members and are in a bit of a rebuilding phases but have some young stars set to shine. Stoke have a new look line-up across their entire club this year and Lindsay says it’s al-

ways exciting to see what they will put out there on game day. Because of funding issues, Mainland Netball put a huge increase on player fees this year. “We covered as much of the costs as possible, but we had to raise our fees a little bit and we were quite nervous that we were going to lose a few teams but looking at registrations that didn’t happen.” Lindsay says despite the increase, everyone is just keen to play. “People still see the value in playing netball.” Netball Nelson will also introduce a new merchandise range this season including hoodies to help engage with the community. “That’s just about making us more of a whanau and being proud of the Nelson Netball brand.” Lindsay says with so many

The Nelson Giants will return to the court bigger and better than ever in 2018. A new coach and several new signings will mark a new start for the franchise which suffered a horror run in the NBL last year. General manager Bill Dahlberg says the side is setting their sights high this season. “We are aiming for top four which is very realistic, then once we’re there we just need to beat two teams and take it.” The Giants finished the 2017 season in sixth with a record of 4-14, however a number of new additions to the roster will see a strong squad to select

Fresh off a Bronze medal at the 2018 Commonwealth games, Finn Delany will be looking to have a season like 2017, where he averaged 18 points a game.

Community engagement will be a priority off court for the Nelson Giants this season. Photo: Barry Whitnall/Shuttersport NZ from. The team has secured the signature of Tall Black captain and New Zealand Breakers star Mika Vukona for the 2018 NBL season. The 35-year-old is a five-time NBL championship winner and will be returning to Nelson where he started his career with the franchise in 2000. Bill says Mika is a fierce competitor, has a wealth of experience and will be a great mentor. The Giants have also recruited a new head coach for the 2018 season. Jamie Pearlman, who has spent the last six years in the NBL, has taken the reins from Brendon Bailey who stepped in after Alan McAughtry was sacked at the start of last season.

Jamie says the local players have been doing the hard yards for a number of months now and it is showing. "They have such passion for the club and there is a tremendous culture which is crucial for success.” Jamie has brought the nearseven-foot American Jerry Evans Jnr with him from Cairns. "The reason why I bought him here is because he exemplifies that team-first attitude,” Jamie says. Bill says Jerry is a longlimbed, very quick defensive player who’s also got some serious offence. Joining Jerry and Jamie fresh

off NBL campaigns will be Tohi Smith-Milner and Kyle Adnam from Melbourne United. “We have picked up some quality players from the Australian competition, the likes of shooting

The side also boasts some talented youngsters such as Riley Bensemann and Tom Ingham. “Nic Trathen is very quick and we are looking at developing him into a guard, and we also have the old campaigner Ali Grainger on our roster and local lad Bronson Beri.” In the squad of 12, eight players are locals. “Part of our brand is developing

kiwis.” Bill says the Giants are all about setting a platform to grow quality people and quality players. The franchise will look to re-establish their iconic brand in 2018. “There are certain brands that are instantly known, if you say you’re a Giant in New Zealand, 95% of basketballers know what you mean.” The Giants are one of the oldest basketball franchises in the country. “We were one of the starting teams and the only team that has been in the league without a stop for close to forty years.” The team will also look to get more involved in a wider cross section of the community. “That’s what the board, management, coaches and high-perfor-

Bill says the side performed well, winning two out of their three games. The Giants started the tournament with a loss to the Rams, before beating the Sharks and the Hawks. Fringe set to liven up Nelson The Nelson Fringe Festival kicks off on Friday with dozens of artists set to shake up the city with more than 40 shows over 10 days. Festival director Laura Irish says the idea behind the festival is to bring local, national and international acts to the city that showcase a variety of different shows. “The word ‘fringe’ can be intimidating to people but really, in the programme, we have something for everyone. It’s only $12 a ticket so it’s really accessible and affordable – come along and try it.” The festival runs from April 27 – May 6 across two venues – the Refinery Artspace on Halifax St and Ghost Light Theatre at 146 Bridge St. “That’s just a reflection of the growth of the festival and how Nelson has really embraced it. You can no longer complain that there is nothing going on in town. This is a great reason for a night out.” She says that, if you plan it

Football grounds 'not up to standard' Jonty Dine Reporter

jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz

A local football club says Nelson City Council has “let them down” by providing unsafe playing and training fields. Tahuna FC’s undersized training pitch on the Tahunanui fields is riddled with valves and man-hole covers while their playing field floods like a bowl. The club says it has been in an ongoing battle with council to bring its fields up to standard. Club administrator and premier player Beige Matuszewski says the biggest problem has always been drainage. “All it takes is half a day of rain and there's surface flooding for a good 2-3 days, so when we get that late in the week there’s almost no chance of us playing on the Saturday.”

Beige says player safety is a major issue as a storm water drain is also in the middle of the training pitch. “We have these valves all over the ground, so whenever we train we have to take cones out and cover them, so it can look like a bit of a driver’s ed course.” He says two days before the season started, they were told there were no fields available. The team were then moved to Neale Park for its opening encounter. Player and committee member Hayden Nunn says football in Nelson is being neglected. Beige says it is impossible trying to squeeze three teams on their small space which has been further shortened more by lighting. “We have an obligation to provide a safe playing environment for our players and when a game is moved there is a lot of scrambling, plus we let our sponsors down by not

being here.” Hayden says players are so keen to just play during a rainy period they will become groundsmen before game time. “There were about four or five games last year where it rained midweek. Because we just want to play footy, two hours before warm up we would bring brooms from home and sweep all the water off the surface just so we would be allowed to play.” Hayden says the club wants a “seat at the table” where its voice is given equal measure. “Our club is growing, football in Nelson is growing and we want to see that supported.” Nelson City Council acting group manager for community services Roger Ball says council tries to meet the needs of all sporting codes, making the best use of the available resources. He says Tahuna Football Club has access to one full

size playing field that doesn’t include manhole covers. “There is also a smaller (but still compliant with code regulations) field closer to the BMX track. Tahuna Football Club and Marist Rugby Club have space for training that is to be shared evenly.” Nelson city councillor and chair of the sport and recreation committee, Tim Skinner says he is well aware of the issues at Tahunanui and will be sitting down with staff to address the issues today. “Those fields are there for all recreational users, so no one code has priority.” FC Nelson are also working with council to resolve issues at Neale Park. A trench was dug through the Nelson field last week to lay a power cable which lead to football games being moved and cancelled. “FC Nelson is working with the local council and Nelson Bays football about our football fields,” the club said in a statement.

Controversial goal scuppers Suburbs Jonty Dine A controversial late call saw Nelson Suburbs held to a 1-1 draw against Ferrymead Bays at Saxton Field on Saturday. The hosts led for the majority of the match but a controversial late goal to Ferrymead meant Suburbs finished with its third deadlock of the season. Suburbs looked the more dangerous team in the first half. Ben Wright had two early shots

at goal, one saved by keeper Max Collingwood and the other by the post. Omar Guardiola was making his first appearance for Suburbs in the 2018 Mainland Premier League and threatened throughout with his fleet footwork and speed. Suburbs were without two key members, James McClay and Alex Ridsdale, but Chester Gaskin and Eddie Sillars stepped up in defence.

The scores remained locked at 0-0 until Wright was brought down in the box and Jordan Yong nailed the ensuing penalty. Suburbs had several chances to extend their lead before the break but could not convert, Guardiola finding the keeper in the 40th minute after a beautiful cross from Wright. Suburbs goalkeeper Coey Turipa was relatively untroubled throughout the first half. The second half was much scrap-

pier with neither side able to dominate possession or territory. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, Ferrymead claimed a goal deep into the second half which the referee awarded as Suburbs stood bemused. The linesman raised his flag but, after a brief exchange with his side-line official, referee Ryan Preston awarded the goal and the match was all square at 1-1. A demoralised Suburbs team couldn’t recover and had to settle

for sharing the points. Jordan Yong says it was disappointing not to come away with the win. "I thought we were the better team today, but the pressure all over the pitch just wasn’t good enough.” Suburbs had started the season with three consecutive wins but have since suffered a loss and three draws to see them sitting fourth on the Mainland Premier League table.

Cricketers called up to 'Greycaps' Jonty Dine A pair of local veteran cricketers are proving it’s never too late to represent your country. Dave Leonard and Mason Robinson will play for the New Zealand Greycaps over 50s cricket team at the inaugural over-50s World Cup in Australia later this year. Mason was a standout performer in the recent series against Australia held in Nelson, scoring a defiant 59 in the first match. The wicketkeeper-batsman also effected several exceptional stumpings over the two matches. David, general manager of Nelson Cricket and a for-

But the two teams each won one of the remaining games in two closely-fought contests. The world cup schedule will be quite demanding, with nine 45-over games in 15 days. The matches will be played on some of the top Sydney first-grade grounds. Nelson, Waimea take early lead in club rugby comp Jonty Dine Reporter

jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Nelson and Waimea Old Boys have established themselves as early front-runners in the NPD Tasman Trophy after each registered their second win of the season on Saturday. Stoke were making their first appearance at their home ground after spending last season at Nayland College. It wasn’t a happy homecoming however, as Nelson ran in six tries to take maximum points from their 40-20 victory over Stoke. Willy Havili again was all class for Nelson with his sharp distribution and accurate kicking bagging 20 points for the match, while Epa Alio was a constant threat out wide. Nelson took home the Ramsey/ Cowman Cup and the Robbie Dawson Cup and remain at the top of the Tasman Trophy table. At Cooks Reserve, Waimea Old Boys beat Kahurangi 37-10. Waimea winger Erenimo Tau was electric for Waimea, scoring his second consecutive brace. In other Tasman Trophy results, Marist defeated Wanderers 40-14 at Tahunanui. Marist manager Jono Mounsey

says it was a great win for his men after a heartbreaking one-point loss in the opening round. Fly halves Taine Robinson and Max Nalder both made their debuts for the club “Taine took over the kicking duties and didn’t look out of place at all for an 18-year-old playing senior footy. Other standouts for the hosts were Matty Stevenson and Jacob Norris. “Jacob comes to us from Hamilton Boys and is filling in a big hole from departing Highlander Shannon Frizell.” James Hawkey was devastating in the midfield, crashing over the chalk twice. Moutere and Renwick continued their winning ways in backing up their victorious first round efforts. Moutere claimed a 14-12 victory at Awarua Park over East Coast, who had a first round bye, while Renwick overcame a fast-finishing Central 31-28 at Lansdowne Park. Both games were all locked up at halftime. The Coasters’ best were No 8 Jack Roberton, skipper Seymour Lambert, hooker/loose forward Billy Collins, Max Freydell and Sam Westenra.

rounds. Wanderers, Waitohi and East Coast have yet to register a win. NPD Tasman Trophy Round 2 results: Nelson 40 (Willy Havili 2, Willis Scott, Navarre Harbour, Epa Alio, Isaiah Miller tries, Willy Havili 2 cons, 2 pens). Stoke 20 (Blair Prinsep, Andy Burnett, Tomas Aoake tries; Jack Grooby con, pen) Marist 40 (James Hawkey 2, Te Puoho Stephens, Isaac Laga, Matt Stevenson, Sam Briggs tries; Hawkey pen, Taine Robinson 2 con, pen). Wanderers 14 (Dan Maclaughlin, Vili Fotofili tries; Fotofili con, Jayden Woolley con) Nelson's Nick Foxley makes a break during Saturday's game against Stoke at Greenmeadows. Meanwhile, on Lansdowne Park No 6, a second half penalty to Kurt Schollum provided the final difference on the scoreboard. Both sides traded converted tries in the second spell, before Renwick pushed out to a 31-21 lead. A late converted touchdown to veteran Robbie Malneek earned the Blues a bonus point but they

came up short of a much-needed win. Best of the Green Machine were tryscorers Vaeno Bennett, and hard-working forwards Josh Holdaway and replacement Matt Paterson. Central rookies Peter Vakaloa at prop and hooker Sione Lonitonesi stood out for the home side. Nelson, Waimea and Renwick now sit at the top of the NPD Tasman Trophy table with 10 points each, Nelson with an impressive 67-point differential after two

Waimea Old Boys 37 (Erenimo Tau 2, Kaiser Whiting, Jeff Lepa, Chris Mason tries; Billy Guyton 3 con, 2 pen). Kahurangi 10 (Miro Mitchell try; Aaron Coe con, pen) Moutere 14 (Vernon Fredericks, Ben Finau tries; Max Freydell 2 cons). East Coast 12 (Michael Ryan, Sam Westenra tries; Heath Forsyth con) Renwick 31 (Michael Vaeno 2, Brian Bennett 2 tries, Bennett con, Kurt Schollum 3 con, pen). Central 28 (Robbie Malneek 2, Dusty Foley, Chris Goodger tries, Mitch Smith 4 con).

Yellow eyed mullets don’t grow very big but are tasty.

Tasty Bycatch Dominik Berghamer There are days when even the most experienced and successful anglers draw a blank and come home empty handed. When you take a closer look that hardly ever means that nothing was caught (I’m not referring to the shearwater that got tangled in my line the other day), just that no snapper or kingies came on board. There are dozens of species of fish in our waters, yet only a handful seem edible to us, is that true? I do not like to waste fish, so whenever I caught a fish over the last years that had swallowed the hook or was badly injured and not undersized it went in the bin, was filleted and eaten. Of course it was a bit hit and miss, with some definitely tastier than others but mostly they were really nice. Here is a list of my experiences with eating bycatch.

Sharks: We all know that Rig shark make excellent eating, but so do the school shark (tope/greyboy), firm, white flesh, perfect for fish and chips. Spiny dogfish have softer meat with a stronger taste but are quite ok if you freeze the fillets before you cook them. Yellow Eyed Mullets: These make excellent bait for a reason, they are very tasty, just fry the bigger ones in some butter (the same goes for piper). Jack Mackerel: One of my favourites, very similar to their cousin, the trevally, suitable for any kind of cooking, or even raw as sashimi, divine! The list will be continued in the next column and I’ll also include the few fish that I recommend to stay away from. Tight lines!

BOWLS: Stoke's Paul Baken and Hawea's Donald Urquhart joined forces to win the Stoke Bowling Club's Invitation Pairs Tournament on Saturday. The event was held under ideal conditions with 20 entries from clubs from around the South Island including the West Coast and Marlborough. In the main event, the final was a cliff-hanger with neither side gaining advantage until the last end when Baken and Urquhart sealed the win over Brendon Hodgson (Stoke) and Robbie Reed (Redcliffs Christchurch) 10-9. In the plate final, Stoke's John Orbell and Blenheim's Paul Langley beat Dave Thomason (Stoke) and Ross James (Murchison) 7-4. Earlier in the season Paul Baken had won the Stoke Pairs championships with Lloyd Bellis. RUGBY: Former Mako Shannon Frizell scored a hat-trick for the Highlanders during

CRICKET: Nelson Cricket have appointed a new coaching manager and he won't have to worry about getting to know the local cricketing scene. Ryan Edwards has enjoyed an extensive playing career for Stoke/Nayland and the Nelson representative team, as well as time playing in the United Kingdom. Nelson Cricket general manager David Leonard is delighted to have Ryan on board. “We conducted a thorough process with a number of highquality candidates, particularly from overseas.” He says to appoint a local with such cricketing credentials is fantastic. “There is a lack of quality coaches in New Zealand and to provide Ryan this opportunity is a great outcome.”

their 34-16 bonus-point victory over the Blues on Friday night. Shannon earned man of the match for his blockbusting performance at Eden Park. The loose forward represented Marist in the 2017 Tasman Trophy before his Highlanders call-up. “For a big forward like him to get a hat trick on starting debut is exceptional,” says Marist senior A manager Jono Mounsey. Shannon’s trio of tries came through a combination of raw power, pace and being in the right time at the right place. “The boys were absolutely wrapped for him, whenever we are watching him they are always screaming his name and cheering on their Marist mate.” Highlanders coach Jamie Joseph showed huge faith in Frizell, opting to keep All Black Elliot Dixon on the pine.
