It is one of the most popular playgrounds in Nelson – but its visitors don’t have a toilet to use. Local mum Belle Clark - with the

backing of numerous other users of Hockey Reserve playground has started an online petition to get a public toilet facility installed at The Brook playground. She says she is forced to bring a potty to the playground for her two children, aged two and four,

even though she just lives up the road. She adds that children are currently forced to “water” the surrounding plants, which is “unhygienic and avoidable” and she has talked to several other local residents who are fed up with people asking to use their toilets

and squatting in the bushes. “It is putting strain on parents, caregivers and visitors to the area. Nelson City Council have listened to the wider community against freedom camping and it is time it listened to the needs of its youngest citizens,” she says.

The council owned playground opened in 2013 and it was designed by Nelson landscape architect company, Canopy, in consultation with residents in the area.

For 86 year old Nelson man Gordon McIndoe, learning how to use a computer has been one of the best things he has done in his retirement. But SeniorNet, the organisation that has taught him and many others, is in danger of closing if they do not boost their membership numbers. SeniorNet is a community training network that supports and motivates people aged 50+ to enjoy and use technology in their everyday lives. Members learn how to do everything from simple word-processing, sending emails and searching the internet to learning how to use tablets, smart phones and digital cameras.

But with a massive drop in funding from the Tertiary Education Commission – from $4,814 in 2016 to just $225 this year – they need more members to stay open, and are encouraging people to come along to their open day this Saturday. Gordon says he joined Nelson SeniorNet 20 years ago, and hasn’t looked back since. “In those days it was held in the St John’s Church Hall and you didn’t have to have a computer,” he says. “The first time I saw something coming out of the printer, I was hooked – it was magic in those days.” Gordon now owns his own notebook and says he has been “gutsy”, enrolling in many of the 46 courses they offer, including PowerPoint, emailing and how to use Trade Me.

But he says the main focus of his computer use is for family history research, which he has been “addicted to” since 1976. Another member, Helen Hills, says the SeniorNet courses are affordable, fun and you can start learning at any level. “I have been to a few other computer courses in the past, but they weren’t very good for newbies,” she says. “I think as soon as you say ‘computer course’ people get scared - but it’s definitely not like that here, it’s just fantastic. You feel

like you’re really connected as a member. “The classes here are small and relaxed and I have learned so much more. The tutors are so happy to help and we always stop for a cup of tea and a biscuit halfway through. “I just wish a lot more people would come.” The SeniorNet open day will be held this Saturday, 22nd April, from 10am - 3pm at Pioneer Park, 11 Hastings St, Nelson. At the open day there will be tours of the learning centre, computer, tablet and smart phone demonstrations, information on courses and timetables, experts on hand to answer questions and membership forms for people who would like to join. who can nip to their own private loo is ridiculous,” she says. “If that is the argument, I would encourage any councillor to try and get their grandchild to a toilet more than five minutes walk away, in time. “It is a public park that is used by people who do not live in the immediate area.” Nelson city councillor Tim Skinner told Nelson Weekly that the playground has been more popular than initially thought. “It’s been a hit - probably too much of a hit,” he says. “It was originally designed to be the neighbourhood play-

Marsden Valley Cemetery’s unveiling of a WW1 memorial drew a large crowd on Saturday, and in the midst of it was 97-year-old Maurice Abrahams. One of Nelson’s WW2 veterans, Maurice served for three years in the Middle East, where he was part of the 26th rifle battalion. Maurice then campaigned on the front line in Greece before joining ordinance as an equipment truck driver and then being posted to the 6th brigade band. “War was hard, when anyone in your unit was killed it brought back the fact that it’s you or I that gets killed, it makes you determined to survive.” Maurice says he and his men were prepared to fight for their country and protect the Queen’s flag, despite the cost. “We were loyal to the flag,

Initiated by Nelson’s Mason Robinson, a sergeant in the Royal New Zealand Airforce, the memorial features the statue of a weary WW1 soldier ‘resting on arms reversed’ as well as three flags, a concrete sandbag bunker and commemorative plaques featuring words from The

Last Post. “I choke up and get quite emotional when I look back and think about what we’ve managed to achieve here,” says Mason. “It was a wonderful day and seeing the faces of the veterans as they saw the statue and what it meant for them, that made the day.” The Minister of Veterans Affairs, David Bennett, unveiled the statue after the Royal New Zealand Air Force display team flew over the cemetery and a troop of local cadets and New Zealand Defence Force members were inspected. Mason led the project on behalf of the Nelson Returned Services Association and was supported financially by Nelson City Council and Lotteries. The statue was designed by Oamaru artist Don Patterson, while New Zealand Army engineers from Burnham military camp undertook the construction of the memorial.

People are always losing and finding things, but what never ceases to amaze Nelson police sergeant Craig Barker is the sheer volume of lost property that floods into the station’s lost and found storage rooms. Bikes are the big ticket item with Craig, who oversees the lost property files, saying around five turn up each week so the bike shed is always full. And some of them “look very expensive”, prompting Craig to ask “how do you lose a bike like that and not realise it?” The answer, Craig believes, is that many people who lose things, or have them stolen and then dumped, have given up any hope of finding them because they don’t have any faith in people’s honesty. “People who lose something tend to think they’ll never see

it again, but that’s not always the case,” Craig says. “There are still a lot of honest people out in the community who hand things in.” Phones, wallets, keys and jewellery are the other common lost items and they make up the majority of the 260 found property files presently held at the Nelson police station. Interestingly, Craig says the number of people coming into the station looking for their lost car keys has increased dramatically with the introduction of electronic transponder keys. “These electronic keys cost $400 or $500 to replace and you can’t just have another one cut, so when people lose them they tend to make more of an effort to find them,” Craig says. Another thing Craig has observed is that there’s a pattern to the time and place that people lose items. Friday and Saturday nights in town always produce a spike in lost prop-

erty, beaches are a rich vein for jewellery, while supermarkets, big box warehouses and taxis provide a constant stream of wallets and phones. There have also been some unusual items handed in, including part of a wing of plane that crashed into the sea and was dredged up by a Nelson fishing boat. False teeth and hearing aids have also turned up from time to time, while they have had a mortar bomb, that fortunately wasn’t live, and a headstone from a cemetery. Another source of lost property is the region’s refuse transfer stations. People are always throwing out valuables by mistake and, if they are lucky, the items are sometimes retrieved by the eagle-eyed staff working in the refuse pit or on the recycle line. Smart Environmental upper South Island manager Yuri Schokking says, last month, two war medals and a set of RAF wings were returned

to the owner after they were found in the refuse pit by staff member Yogi Takimoana. But Yuri says not every story has a happy ending with one lady dumping a mattress that “supposedly” contained $30,000 in cash. “She’d cleared out her mother’s home when she was in hospital and came down two weeks later and asked if we still had the mattress. We asked her why and she said it had $30,000 hidden in it, but we had to say ‘sorry, it’s long gone’. When items are handed into police, Craig says they are required by law to hold on to them for a month. If the item is not claimed, the finder has the option of keeping it, otherwise it is either disposed of or sold in the police auction - proceeds from the auction go into the Consolidated Fund. However, Craig says they always go to great lengths to try and find the owner.

The biggest week of the year for returned servicemen is about to kick off with Poppy Day on Friday and Anzac Day next Tuesday. Poppy Day is on Friday, April 21, and poppies will be available from the main streets in Stoke and Nelson, as well as Bunnings Warehouse and the Nelson Market this Saturday. Nelson RSA president Barry Pont says they also already have around 35 poppy boxes around various shops and businesses. Money raised from Poppy Day is used to help pay medical expenses for veterans and all money collected in Nelson stays in the region. A few days later, on April 25, Anzac Day services will be held across the region. It all starts with Nelson RSA Dawn Service at Nelson Anzac Memorial Park at 5:45am. The service is usually very well attended, says Barry, and he’s hoping for more of the same this year. Following the dawn service, laying of poppies on soldiers graves at Wakapuaka Cemetery will be held at 8am, followed by wreath-laying at the Queens Gardens Boer War Memorial at 8:30am and a Civic Service at the Cathedral Steps at 9am. Laying of the poppies on soldiers graves at Marsden Valley Cemetery will be happening at 10am, followed by the Nelson RSA Service at Stoke Memorial Hall at 11am. Other services will be held across the Tasman district, including at Murchison, Takaka, Collingwood, Motueka, Tapawera, Wakefield, Brightwater and Richmond.

The genius mind of Leonardo da Vinci has been brought to life in an interactive exhibition that has opened at the Nelson Provincial Museum. Da Vinci 'Robots and Machines' opened on Saturday and showcases 80 machines, all handcrafted by Artisans of Florence International, who are the international tour operators for the Museum of Leonardo da Vinci

“Peak FM will play the new songs, the older newish songs and will be aimed at youth and young adults. Despite the addition of a computer, play-out software, mixer, and microphone to his bedroom, Hayden says his parents and friends are all very supportive. “They all think it’s pretty cool and some of my mates are even keen to help out and come on the show.” Outside of school, sport, and friends, the college student has spent hours creating and branding Peak FM and is just one step away from his first broadcast. “Now I just have to find some sponsors or businesses that want to advertise on the station so that I can cover the costs of broadcasting across a regional FM frequency, which is about $150 a week.” Hayden says the station will be a fun platform through which businesses can target that slightly younger demographic. The station will be available online at peakfm.co.nz and will be on the air as soon as Hayden finds sponsors/advertisers to support a frequency. 40 years for Nelson North Lions Club

Kate Russell The Lions Club of Nelson North is celebrating its 40th anniversary this month. The club was formed in April 1977 and over the last 40 years has been involved in a number of community activities ranging from firewood collection and sales, newspaper collection, aluminium can collection to the Lions Noddy Train rides (now Lions Trailer rides). They have also helped with the placement of park bench seats, BBQ and picnic tables at the beach, redecorating the paraplegic units at the beach motor camp and have provided voluntary assistance to a number of community organizations. The Lions Summertime Fair (formerly Arts and Craft Fair) held on the Tahunanui Green on New Years Day, is another popular event they run. An invitation is extended to former members to join the club at their meeting on April 24, where they will be having a guest speaker. Accountant turned chef feeds army engineers Barry Blue has left behind an accountancy career to find his niche as a chef – and he’s also found a rewarding connection with the New Zealand Army after volunteering to cook for soldiers on deployment in Nelson. The 53 year-old, in his second and final year of the Diploma of Culinary Arts at NMIT, was quick to put up his hand to feed a contingent of Royal New Zealand Army engineers who have been in Nelson to reconstruct a memorial to first world war soldiers at the Marsden Valley cemetery. NMIT Hospitality School tutor Phillip Reay reckoned the practical experience for a senior student would be highly beneficial and Barry couldn’t volunteer quickly enough. “My father had been in the engineer’s regiment as a mechanic in the second world war and it was a chance to give something back to the engineers.” Burnham and Linton military camp-based engineers have been dining at NMIT’s Rata restaurant while spending a month rebuilding the memorial site. It includes a statue of Nelsonian Lieutenant Cock who was shot down over France on April 14, 2017 – the same date as the birth of Barry’s father, Douglas. “Everyone tells me I’m great cooking for the engineers, but I reckon I’m the one who’s getting the most out of it because I’m getting another chance in the kitchen. I get to make things that I want. It’s priceless, real-time experience,” says Barry. Cooking school is not Barry’s first time in tertiary study. Ironically, it was 20 or so years ago that he attended NMIT – but as an accountancy student. “My whole life has been as a chartered accountant but I’d always wanted to run a pub.” Friends advised him to learn to cook first and Barry took the plunge. “I’ve absolutely loved it and it’s really changed my attitude towards cooking. I came here to learn to cook a steak and chips but I’ve learned far more than that. I’m still shocked and amazed at what I can now create on a plate.” While the soldiers have returned to their bases, Barry and his fellow students have another month or two before they complete their diploma. Barry says his next move will be to buy a pub or restaurant.

Antiques put on show Locally Owned and Operated

Every piece on display at the National Antiques and Collectables Show had a story to tell, from bottles, advertising and breweriana, to militaria, local history and old china. Last weekend it was Nelson’s turn to host the annual event, packing all manner of unusual items and collections into Trafalgar Centre for two days of swapping, selling and exploring. Among those exhibiting was Gavin Peter with his collection on Nelsonian Samuel Kirkpatrick. Samuel grew up in Ireland, moving to New Zealand in 1878 at the age of 24. S. Kirkpatrick and Company began production in 1881, starting on Bridge St before expanding to the premises of the current Nelson New World supermarket. Samuel was the biggest employer

awarded to S.Kirkpatrick and Company for their jams and jellies. The rest of Gavin’s collection encompasses a range of bottles

and boxes. “A lot of this has come from local collections, it’s very much a Nelson-based item and it’s such a well-known brand. "My father before me started the collection and so I’m a secondgeneration bottle collector. Dad was a founding member of the bottle club and I’ve just expanded on it,” says Gavin. “I’m a collector really, or a hoarder as such, and so I’ve got various collections and various things and I can’t help it. You might wait 20 years to find one piece and that’s what collecting’s about, trying to refine your collection down to the most unique and interesting pieces.” The National Antiques and Collectables Show featured both collector’s displays, including Gavin’s, which were judged, and sell and swap stalls, with antique and collectable owners attending from around the country, Australia, the UK and even from the Falkland’s.

He still plays in the Nelson Brass Band, has served as a Freemason for more than 70 years and volunteers for Arthritis NZ after developing two forms of arthritis.

Along with his partner Sue, Maurice leads an active life and part of it is volunteering at the Ngawhatu swimming pool, where he is a trained lifeguard. “But I only save the ladies,” he joked. Last week he and Sue spent two hours at Z petrol station in Halifax St, where he worked as a “community concierge” washing windows and greeting customers. He handed out orange tokens which his customers could use to vote for Arthritis NZ and help the charity receive cash from Z, through its Good in the Hood promotion. Maurice says he got relief from his treatment so wanted to give back, but he wasn’t sure if he’d be offered a job after his efforts. “Sue’s right into it and I just follow along, but when people respond you feel good.”

I was shaking in my Chucks, my RPM shirt was getting soaked in nervous sweat, I may have looked the part but I was nothing but a wannabe. Skateboarders are people I will never understand, they make carving up a pipe look so easy, throwing yourself at concrete look so painless, and defying gravity look so fearless. I have no idea how they do it but I wanted to find out, so I headed down to Neale Park for the Tasman Skatepark Tour Final to see if the region’s best could teach me a thing or two. I rocked up counting on the fact that I could almost look like I belonged, what I didn’t count on was the mass audience gathering, ready to see how much I didn’t. Skatepark Tour organisers Sport Tasman were also geared up to watch my attempt and took me over to meet Mita Timpson, the inventor of the 540 inward free wind whip and the unofficial mentor to kids learning how to skate, scooter and BMX down at local skateparks. If he could talk the little ones through skateboarding, I figured

he could help me. I think I overestimated my abilities, a fact that is amply demonstrated in the video online at www.nelsonlive.co.nz I was expecting some kind of crash course - skateboarding for dummies. But there was no, ‘this is how you stand on a board’, ‘this is how you roll on a board’, this is how you turn on a board’. Nope, what I got first up was, ‘you’re going to drop in on a quarter pipe’. AHHHHHHHHH. I hate falling. Full stop. So when someone says ‘you’re going to drop in.’ I hear ‘you’re going to plummet to the ground with no control’. And that’s exactly what I did. Over and over and over, in front of a big crowd that winced every time the girl who had no idea what she was doing ate concrete. On some of my wipeouts I managed to land on my feet but for the most part I was falling backwards onto my wrist and butt. I’m not going to lie, it hurt, a lot. But my ego had me plastering a half-grin, half-grimace on my face and going back for more, I

ment I got from the crowd lining the pipe, I needed to stop thinking about it and just send it. Unfortunately, I wasn’t even getting close so when my fear finally outweighed my ego, I stepped back and let the pros do it. And by pros I don’t just mean the teenagers and adults, I mean the tiny eight-year-olds who were getting air taller than themselves and throwing tricks I could only dream of landing. There was amazing talent in all shapes and sizes everywhere I looked and I saw everything from ollies to superman grabs, backflips to 180s, and tail whips to manuals. But the best thing to watch was the community, the older skaters and riders were taking on big brother roles and helping out the young and inexperienced, and everyone was so positive and encouraging. It didn’t matter if you crashed or didn’t stick the landing, you got a cheer or a slap on the back as long as you gave it a go and tried your best. And although I looked like an absolute floundering idiot, that is what I tried to do.

Once again, there was a great response from the public when asked to send in suggestions for the theme. With a total of 112 suggestions to choose from, organisers had a tough time selecting the winning theme. Lynne Kohen, who suggested the winning theme says she chose it because of its inclusiveness. "I believe this is a time to respect and celebrate differences, not use them as reasons for divisiveness. We are the World isn't a new idea, but its message is vital, enduring and so important for our children to understand." Councillor Gaile Noonan, Chair of the Community Services Committee, says there were many very strong suggestions to choose from for this year's theme. We are the World is open to many interpretations – cultures, stories and environments – all of which make

up our world. "It underlines the history Nelson has with its community, many of whom come from around the world. "There are also very current aspects to this theme. We are the World encourages people to think of us all as belonging in the same world, collectively, not separately." Organisers hope the parade participants will explore and express ideas about culture and identity, their stories and histories, their place in the world, and of course the natural world. Nature’s Heroes take action on wasps Wasp populations in the Fringed Hill and Marsden Valley areas have been decimated by the concerted efforts of two groups of volunteers. With support from Nelson Nature, members of the Nelson Mountain Bike Club and the Marsden Valley Trapping Group have each taken to the hills to install, pre-bait and then bait wasp stations, and then monitor the results. Marsden Valley Trapping Group members Johnny Stephenson, Phillip Stephenson and Neville West have been working to co-ordinate five teams of two people each, to install 230 stations across nine trap lines located along popular walking tracks in the Marsden Valley. "We got the best result on the Memorial Walk," says Johnny. "The wasps have quite an effect on food supplies for birds, as well as being a serious predator on wildlife. We’re hoping if we do this every year it will keep the numbers down and have a good effect on the environment here, as well as making it safer for people to walk." On top of this, Ben Pointer of the Nelson Mountain Bike Club says around 30 – 40 members covered some 30km of popular mountain bike tracks around the Fringed Hill and Dun Mountain trail, and the Maitai Caves track. "We did activity testing of the wasps in early February but there weren’t many about. They really took off quite late but when they did there were plenty of them." The club had eight teams working on the project, which involved multiple bike trips in to install, test, bait and monitor 600 stations. Monitoring of wasp nests in the area highlighted the excellent results from the programme, with all monitored nests disappearing after baiting was carried out. "There are still a few wasps about as our coverage over the Nelson area was limited to the 600 stations, and our area is enormous," says Ben. "For year one, there's been a huge impact. If we can carry the momentum into next year and get a few more people and other groups involved I really think that we can make our city wasp free. "It’s certainly been a great project to be involved in and we can’t wait to get stuck in next year."

Church Street upgrade to progress The Works and Infrastructure Committee has approved the concept design for the improvement of Church Street, which will now proceed to detailed design and then into construction. The Church Street Upgrade project is an opportunity for Council to progress an idea that has been put forward by business and property owners on the street to develop this key laneway. The concept design has been well supported by the Church Street community and will make a real difference toward creating a vibrant quarter within the Nelson CBD. Importantly, it leaves space for the Church Street community to put its own stamp on the future of its street. The concept design has progressed from those ideas originally brought to Council by the business owners. The key features of the revised concept include: • Flush roadway and footpaths (no raised kerbs) creating a pedestrian oriented environment. • A one-way, formally designated "Shared Zone" environment, with a self-enforcing low design speed (approx. 10km/hr). • Gateway treatments at the street entrances. • Increased pedestrian path widths. • Increased outdoor dining space.

• A central area outside café/restaurants as a focal point. • Ability for property owners and businesses to give identity to the street. • Increased vegetation (approx. 16 additional trees and green planting areas). • Better equipped to close the street on a temporary basis for festivals, markets and events, which has significant support among the Church Street business and property owners. The concept design includes adopting one-way vehicle traffic flow (from Hardy Street to Selwyn Place) extending the full length of Church Street, whilst still permitting two-way cycle traffic within this low speed environment. This is subject to a change to the Parking and Vehicle Control Bylaw which will need approval by the Planning and Regulatory Committee at an upcoming meeting. The detailed design work will be progressed as soon as possible in order to be completed this financial year, with construction work due to take place in the 2017/18 financial year.

Logging underway in recreational areas Last year, following a forestry review, Council adopted recommendations relating to its forestry portfolio and how forestry production should be managed into the future. Council has 640 hectares of forestry in four main blocks: the Brook, Maitai, Marsden and Roding, comprising of a variety of species including pinus radiata (majority) and several other species such as Douglas fir and Acacia. The current make-up is a legacy of previous attempts to diversify species planted. Part of this adopted strategy also includes the retiring of approximately 140 Ha of production forest area and includes the removal of its wilding conifers (specifically

Douglas Fir and Acacia) located in all four blocks. Following the completion of the review, logging work has now started in the Roding and is beginning in the Maitai this month. All works could affect some popular recreational tracks, either with temporary closures or detours being put in place. Special Housing Area (SHA) feedback sought Council has received an Expression of Interest (EOI) to develop a SHA at 12 Wakapuaka Road.

Public feedback will be reported to Council on 8 June for consideration in making a decision on whether to recommend the SHA to the Minister for Building and Housing. We have just prepared our submission to the Annual Plan, which is an important way youth can be heard by Council. This has involved surveying a large number of youth and using this to inform our submission. With the general elections coming up this year, we are working with the electoral office to find ways to raise youth enrolment and voting rates. This goes a long way to getting youth heard, and empowers youth by letting them know their vote counts. We’re also continuing our collaboration with the Nelson Youth Health Alliance, working with professionals to improve youth health services in Nelson. In our Active Transport subgroup, we’ve led focus groups with youth about proposed cycleways in Nelson and Tahunanui to provide youth voice on the matter. We have also set up an environmental subgroup, with the aim of improving the way youth fundraise, for example, car washes, to ensure our methods are environmentally friendly. William and Fred Tyree arrived in Dunedin with their family in 1871, aged 16 and 4. Their uncle, James Tyree was established as a photographer so it

He’s pretty much our sole supplier and is keen to help out wherever he can.” In June, Simply Vegan will join other college businesses at the Theatre Royal where they will pitch their concepts to professional business people during the regional Dragon’s Den, the regional final being held on June 20. Regional winners will then have the opportunity to compete for the national award in Wellington on December 6. “I’m always impressed to see the student’s grow their confidence and skills and watch them turn their ideas into reality,” says Waimea College business studies teacher, Naomi Chapman. “It’s great to see the help that the business community provides, from volunteering time to mentoring teams, speaking to classes and partnering with teams to get ideas off the ground.” Simply Vegan joins teams from other high schools in the region for the competition.

Waimea College business studies students are putting their skills into action, creating their own businesses which will be pitched to professionals at the regional Dragon’s Den. The Young Enterprise Lion Foundation course is a one year programme that runs alongside Level 2 and 3 NCEA Achievement Standards. It requires Year 12 and 13 students to come up with a concept for their own unique product, undertake market research, create their product and branding and then take it to market, mirroring the process that start-up businesses go through. Simply Vegan was created by year 12 students Rhyanna Ewing, Laura Kearns, Abby Logan and Delilah Botham, after they noticed that the food box industry didn’t cater to those following a vegan diet. Their food box will contain all the ingredients needed to

cook a vegan meal, including the recipe and a pamphlet full of information about vegan foods. “I think it will be a really good experience, we’re making connections that we can use in life and we’re running our own business, it’s experience you can’t gain from doing anything else,” says Laura. As well as their own hard work, Simply Vegan has also had help from business owners in the community, including Rhyanna’s family who own and operate Ewing Poultry and Gary Watson from Fresh Choice Richmond. Part of the project involves two selling cycles, the first being at the Nelson and Motueka markets later in the year, while the second will be selling at Fresh Choice for the month of August. “Gary has been so kind to let us have retail space and let us use his freezers and all that, because he thinks it’s an amazing idea,” says Rhyanna. “Fresh Choice is all for helping the community and he’s a big part of our idea and helping us

ROAD SAFETY Tips for safe winter travelling • Ensure your vehicle is safe for winter driving, make sure you have chains/snow socks and know how to put them on. A small shovel and a mat to kneel on will also make the process of putting them on much easier. ROAD SAFETY The Share the Road campaign puts bus and truck drivers on bikes, and cyclists in the cabs of heavy vehicles, to help build empathy between road users. The Campaign goal is to make safer roads by addressing the lack of understanding and awareness among people on bikes and heavy vehicle drivers of the issues and challenges the other group faces. The Campaign is run by Cycling Action Network and funded by the NZTA. Professionally facilitated, half-day workshops are the core work of the Campaign. These involve classroom discussions, experience of the other road users’ vehicle, and an on-road bike ride, stopping to discuss aspects of safe driving or cycling. The cycling workshop in Founders this Saturday is part of the Campaign and, with the number of trucks present on Nelson roads, will be of interest to any Nelsonian keen on using their bike for daily trips but sometimes concerned about sharing with heavy vehicles.

Capital call-ups for six hockey players Jacob Page Nelson hockey is strongly represented in the Capital Under-18 hockey team with six players making the initial cut. Chevy Walker, Aimee Kersten, Jess Kelly, Scott Green, Shania Kuipers and Neave Ellis are all part of the squad with Chevy, Shania and Jess all making the team for the first time. “It means that we can be seen by more people and to play all the other national centres is exciting,” Shania says. Making a Capital team is no mean feat with the vast geographical area meaning players are picked from the West Coast, Buller, Marlborough, Nelson, Tasman, Wellington and Wairarapa regions. Shania has made the shift from playing in the field to being a goalie. “I love the challenge of being the

last line of defence. “I like it when people take shots at me. Chevy has made the squad through her work rate as a midfielder. “I’m not a goal scorer by nature but I work hard and I’m more of a setup person,” she says. “There’s a lot of running involved but I really enjoy it.” The members of the squad will have to survive cuts to the squads before the final teams are confirmed. In the meantime, the team will try to make the most of training together before they head away to be with other squad members. The group are motivated by players who have made the squad in the past and are eager to make the most of the opportunity. “This is a chance to get in front of a lot of coaches and means you are on the radar for higher teams,” Shania says.

Total Totaradale comfort for top golfer Jacob Page When you've played a course 1000 times like Ryan Chisnall then it's no wonder he was a runaway winner of the Totaradale Easter Golf Open. Tasman's No 1 golfer, who was a member of the club during his early years, blitzed the 36-hole tournament to card 11-under for the tournament. More than 100 golfers took part in the annual event but all were at least 14 shots behind Ryan. Tom Ingham has put the Nelson Giants ahead of his career this NBL season. The former Waimea College pupil has turned down a full time teaching role at Nelson Intermediate to remain parttime and focus on his basketball. It's the type of commitment the Mike Pero Nelson Giants need, given they sit at the bottom of the ladder despite a victory against the Taranaki Mountainairs on Sunday. Win No 1 for the season will give them some confidence as they travel to Christchurch to face the Canterbury Rams on Friday night. "We have to stay together during these tough times," he says. "If we keep working hard at training the results will come." Tom will start full time at Nelson Intermediate once the season finishes in May. He says it was a chance to back

Tom is also a handy cricketer, having scored a ton in the extended Nelson senior cricket final before earlier this season for Waimea Toi Toi. While his family has strong links with cricket, it was a Nelson Giants skills session that turned him on to basketball. "I went to a clinic at primary school that was run by the Giants and I fell in love with it straight away." Tom says American import Darnell McCulloch, who played several seasons for the Giants in the early 2000s, was someone he admired as a kid." "My parents always put the ball in my hand regardless of what sport it was... My dad was a good cricketer but basketball has always been big for me." Tom says his biggest mentors have been former Tall Black and Giants big man Ed Book and his late High School coach Greg Wright. Tom says he wants to be a contributor to the Giants and help his teammates pull the side out of this early season slump.

Visitors, weather dominate Easter Extravaganza Jody Scott

The Easter Extravaganza at Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway managed just one night of racing after wet weather dealt the meeting a final blow. Racing was delayed by 24 hours after Friday’s first night was postponed. Surface water around the arena meant the committee had to make it a Saturday/Sunday event. The highlight demolition derby did take place on a weatherreduced Sunday night, with the usual thrills and spills. Clint Paris took out the event with Phil Kramer second. The country-wide storm halted the travel plans of several drivers with cancelled ferries and flights, but the majority of visitors did manage to make the meeting. Sadly, with so much water during the week, the track became fairly lumpy early in the night meaning it was too dangerous for the sidecar class to race. Side-cars were a highlight last year and, with drivers from Invercargill and North Island here for the weekend, it was a shame that they were unable to race on the first night. Sunday’s racing always looked like it would be cut short and they only managed three races before the night was called off and the demolition derby brought down the curtain on a speedway season that had been disrupted by weather which, almost poetically, had the final say.
