Sara Hollyman A BBC television crew is in Nelson this week to film a popular series giving British families a taste of life “down under”. Each episode of “Wanted Down Under” gives one UK family the chance to experience life on the other side of the world for a week, before deciding as a family whether they want to emigrate. It is viewed by millions of people worldwide. Rob and Holly Walker, with their two young boys, chose

Nelson as the place that they want to potentially move across the world for. The Nelson Weekly was tipped off to the scoop after this reporter’s real estate agent asked if a film crew could visit their house in Hira. Show fixer Linda McLaughlan says the Walker family are spending the week experiencing Nelson “as if they lived here”. “They will be spending a day looking at potential job options, Rob’s a builder and Hol-

ly’s a beauty therapist. They will check out a school for their kids and they will spend a day doing regular ‘Sunday’ activities like going to the beach and heading out on a bush walk.” Part of the experience is looking at the cost of living in Nelson, compared with where they live now, and they will also look at three potential property options - in Toi Toi, Enner Glynn and Hira. At the end of the week, the Walkers will be shown messages from families and friends

in the UK and will then have to make the decision whether Nelson will be their future home. The full series consists of 26 episodes and only five of these will be filmed in New Zealand, the rest in Australia. “The families will typically choose to go to Auckland or Wellington because it’s the places they’ve heard of. I would hope that more and more they will start looking to the regions as viable options. Nelson Regional Development

Agency chief executive Mark says the show is only positive for the region. “With a growing economy and a tight labour market, talent attraction is one of the biggest challenges for the Nelson Tasman region. We have an extraordinary lifestyle proposition and having Wanted Down Under cover the region provides a fantastic level of exposure to tell this story.” Visit nelsonweekly.co.nz or the Nelson App for Sara Hollyman’s column on the experience

David Ludlow is calling “bulls***.” The American boatie, who has been visiting Nelson for the past three years, has been in a longrunning battle with the Nelson Marina to acknowledge that its pump out station has been broken. A pump out station allows boatowners with onboard waste holding tanks to pump their sewage into the city’s system – rather than dumping it 500m off shore, as required by law. “But it hasn’t been working. I’ve tried telling them but they refused to acknowledge there’s a problem.” David says the implication is that many boaties won’t be bothered dumping waste all the way out to

However, last week, Nelson City Council, which manages the facility, finally says it is getting the pump out station serviced.

“The pump out station is working but council acknowledges that it could be performing better and is having it serviced to achieve better results for users,” says council’s manager of parks and facilities, Rosie Bartlett. “It is worth noting that the pump is most effective at high tides when it can be connected at a flatter level from boat to pump.”

ginning

She also says that boaties need the correct adaptor to ensure it fits onto their boats. But David is not happy. “That’s bulls***,” he says. “How dare they? I’ve used it at high tide – whether it’s high tide or low tide it’s not sucking anything.” David says he also showed marina staff how it did not work at high tide. He even paid for an adaptor to be specially made for his boat. It still didn’t work. “Why would they say that it works?” David says. Fellow marina user Rex Newey says it astounds him that council would let the situation happen. “It’s an intricate part of any marina.” But David is unapologetic about kicking up a stink over the pump out station. “People in New Zealand a little nervous about making waves. I’m from a different culture.”

A Nelson City Council contractor has come under fire for an embarrassing pathway marking blunder in Atawhai, which will be re-done at no cost to ratepayers. A concerned resident took photos of the dodgy line work on the Atawhai Crescent shared pathway, which show freshly white lines painted over grass, dirt and leaves. “I walked for about 500m and I would say about one-third of the paint for those white lines is wasted. There is no doubt they will need to do repaint again very soon…feeling gutted,” they told Nelson Weekly. Alec Louverdis, group manager infrastructure at the council, says they have been made aware of the issue and have already raised it with the contractors involved. The contractor is Downer, which did not respond to a request for comment. “This standard of work is unacceptable and certainly not of a standard expected of any of our contractors,” says Alec. “This has been clearly conveyed to the contractor who will be re-painting these areas at their own cost with urgency. There will be no extra cost to council or ratepayers at all.” He says that he expects the contractor to evaluate their processes to ensure that this does not happen again.

Clicking onto computers in homes Kate Russell Dhan Maya Sunwar may have only been in the country for six months, but she already knows her way around a computer. The Bhutanese refugee and her family were one of ten groups to graduate from the refugee Com-

puters in Homes programme last night at the Victory Community Centre. The Nelson branch of the nationwide programme has been run annually at Victory Primary School for the past 13 years and is achieving great success. In the past year alone they have

seen 20 families through the programme, and coordinator Dianne Goodwin says the education opportunities for participants are endless. “Students can have access to a computer in their home, plus families can now access internet essentials such as WINZ, my IRD, TradeMe jobs and property, educational websites and school blogs and also communicate with family and friends.” Throughout the eight week course, families get 30 hours of basic computer and IT training for two hour-long lessons on

a Tuesday and Thursday evening. Bilingual tutors are provided as well as childcare. At the end of the course, each family gets a refurbished computer and partly subsidised internet for a year. “It then ends with a graduation, celebrating their achievement and culture, where we have the families as VIPs, and important guests such as our refugee coordinators, local councillors, Red Cross family volunteers and teachers and friends,” says Dianne. Last night’s graduates consisted of four Colombian families, three from Myanmar and three from Bhutan - all who have been new

arrivals in the past year. “Our Colombian families were from Stoke and they were so eager and grateful to learn that they all rode their bikes in to class,” says Dianne. “The programme not only helps refugees feel more connected to their own countries, but also more connected to New Zealand society.” Meanwhile, Dhan Maya says she is grateful for the opportunity and is looking forward to helping her three year old son use computers in his future education. “The tutors are very helpful and we are very thankful to learn new things.”

The Regional Transport Committee is due to meet tomorrow to deliberate on the submissions and to approve lodging the amended Nelson Regional Land Transport Plan 2015-2021, which includes the 2018 Regional Public Transport Plan. One hundred of the submissions supported the continuation of the Southern Link, with 41 not supporting it. Thirty-three submitters proposed bus service improvements with 54 requesting better bus infrastructure. Forty-two asked to progress Rocks Rd walking and cycling facilities, 29 supported an increase in walking and cycling investment while 23 supported increased road capacity, such as optimising existing arterial networks. Annette Milligan and Sharyn Finnie swear by their e-bikes and say they’re perfect for Nelson. Photo: Charles Anderson.

Annette Milligan and Sharyn Finnie have a commuted total of almost 10,000km between them – all on e-bikes. Now they say it’s the part of the future for a connected Nelson. Annette, a director of a medical clinic, lives in Toi Toi and Sharyn, the clinic’s receptionist, lives in Richmond. “When I saw Annette’s I got jealous,” says Sharyn. “So I had to have one.” She bikes most mornings from Richmond, which takes her about 25 minutes. In 18 months she has cycled about 6300km. “Going home the traffic’s backed up and I just fly past them all. It’s great.” Annette, who was once a competitive cyclist, says her cycling has increased sevenfold since buying her bike three years ago. Now about 75 per cent of her commute days are on bike. In three years she has cycled 3700km. She says it is faster to take the bike as all the parking issues disappear. “And hills just disappear, sometimes I go

slower to get more exercise, but I can go on full power and zip along at 26kmh.” They both say e-bikes belong on cycle paths but acknowledge that they give way to everything. “Cycleways are for everybody, there are kids and dogs and you just need to be switched on.” They say the best thing is there is “no need for lycra” and you don’t work up a sweat even if you get a puff on. Sharyn says the climate in the region is perfect for this kind of commuting and she has seen a definite increase in the number of them around. Theirs cost them $2700 each, so it is an investment. “But if you look at the petrol I would have saved doing 6000km.” Annette says that not using her car has likely added some lifespan to it too and she has been able to on-sell two car parks at her work. But most importantly, she says it’s social and great for community. “On the way home there are so may kids and families cycling, and I say hello to them all. It’s wonderful, really.”

‘Hard to imagine Nelson without her’ Charles Anderson

On Good Friday, Margaret Belton went to little Kaiteriteri with her family. She sunk her toes into the warm sand and listened to the waves lap at the shoreline as her children and grandchildren talked and played and laughed. It was a similar scene about 50 years earlier when Margaret, recently widowed with five children, went on a date with Humphrey Belton, whose wife had also recently died, and also had his own seven children. From there began a journey of two families and a matriarch – one who was celebrated as pow-

erful but quiet force for good in Nelson and the world. Margaret died on Monday April 2, at the age of 88 - just after sharing that trip with her family to the beach. And last Friday, Old St John’s was filled with people who had their own stories about how Margaret touched their lives. She was then interred in a Bahá'í ceremony in Richmond. “She found great happiness and joy in small and simple pleasures,” said her daughter Prue Fanselow-Brown. “She genuinely appreciated beauty and nature.” Prue said her mother had always wanted to be a doctor. Family Jewels store owner Grant Smithies is hosting discount sales and all-vinyl party for Record Store Day. Photo: Charles Anderson.

Celebrating all things vinyl Charles Anderson There is little doubt that Grant Smithies is a little obsessed with records. So it’s little surprise that he is rubbing his hands at the prospect of Record Store Day – an international extravaganza celebrating independent record sellers around the world. Grant and his wife Jose Cachemaille set up Family Jewels at the Free House last year and since then the punt on passion seems to have paid off. “I see all kinds of people, from those obsessive record collector types to those who have a pint and get nostalgic for the formative music of their youth, to those who are about 18 to 20 and are starting to buy vinyl of Led Zeppelin and The Beatles and The Doors. It’s the same stuff I was buying at their age with my paper run money. So it’s

really social.” To celebrate, Grant is having a discount day at Family Jewels next Saturday where he will also bring in a selection of interesting records from New Zealand artists. Then in the evening he is hosting a party at Deville where he and a bunch of mystery DJs will play a selection of music from “The Golden Years”. “From 1979-1989 is an amazingly productive musical era. You have post punk, early hip hop, great disco, early house music and Jamaican dance hall,” he says. “You can play Bowie next to Prince next to Chic next to The Buzzcocks, and get away with it.” Grant says it will be “all vinyl action” and the last party of the year before it gets too cold. Golden Years on Saturday, April 21 from 9pm, Deville, New Street, $20. Presale tickets from Deville and Family Jewels Records.

School is one step closer to new van Clifton Terrace School is one step closer to getting a new van after they were presented with a $4,000 cheque from the Mike Pero Foundation on Friday. The school has been fundraising for a van to get students to and from sports activities and other trips. Principal Rob Wemyss says they also raised $15,000 through their ‘Tea by the Sea’ event last month, leaving them with just a bit more to raise before hopefully securing a van next term.

“Being an out-of-town school, a van will take the pressure off our parents and families, and allow us to go on more excursions,” says Rob. “Mike Pero made the process really easy, and they were very generous. Now we just need to find the right van.” Craig Hamilton of Mike Pero says they were only too happy to make the donation. “Obviously a van is big cost for any school and we are really pleased we could help them out.”

mission to hospital. If my memory serves me correctly, Nelson and Marlborough Hospitals reported problems in catering for the number of people requiring hospital treatment last season. What has been done to cater for any increase in admissions? A. Smithson Long-term plan: Let no one be deceived by the pretense of democracy with the opening of submissions for Nelson City Council’s LongTerm Plan. Even some key councillors were left out of the closed door decision making for much of what went into the plan. Although it is encouraging that, at last, council is addressing some infrastructure requirements, the insertion of huge additional spending on non-essentials and political patronage means that the path of rate and debt rises is becoming unsustainable for many ratepayers. There is an end game to the profligate spending by council. Assets

will have to be sold, including the port and the airport. Dan McGuire $14.9M earmarked for library: Great news hope they put in a soundproof room where we can go and have peace and quiet and not have to listen to cell phone conversations and Skyping where the people seem to think we all need to hear their life story, sick of it. Used to be a quiet haven but not anymore. Brenda Kenny For that amount of money it should be amaazing!! Marcia Hickmott And open-ended contracts will see this blow out to double as that’s NCC's track record so far. Gina Young Way too much public money spending... Our Millennials will not be using it so why bother spending $14.9 million... Sue Gellatly

Nelson Matters Nelson’s congestion and road safety problems are getting worse because of the growth in population, exports, and visitors. The extraordinary message from the new Government’s ten year transport policy last week is Nelson is going to have to pay more but get less. Petrol tax is to go up from 70c to 80c per litre meaning it will cost an extra $5 dollars each time to fuel up. This will increase the amount Nelson and Tasman road users pay from $100 million to $110 million a year. The first problem is Labour

NELSON’S TOP TREE TEAM

promised no new taxes during this term of Parliament. PM Ardern is arguing it is a duty and not a tax. That will not wash with the public. It is also hollow for the Government to argue that it is not a new tax on the basis that it is just putting up an existing tax. On this basis she could put income tax and GST up. This extra 10 cents a litre fuel tax will hit families’ car running costs by $250 per year but also add to the bill for groceries through increased transport costs. The killer blow for Nelson is

how they intend to spend the money taken in petrol taxes and road user charges from cars and trucks. Funding for improved State Highways upgrades nationally is to be cut 70% from $1375 million in 2018 to $425 million in 2028. It is a $5 billion reduction in new highway construction. New light rail projects in Auckland and Wellington are to get $4 billion and other rail an extra $1 billion. The other changes are an increase for road safety policing, walkways and cycle ways and funding for Council roads

Actually think the money should be spent on sorting the stormwater and drainage out in the region....would save people a lot of heartache for people. Sally Cox Council to look at helping charities dump junk: Maybe the council could start doing twice yearly collections for large items or something? This might stop at least some of these problems. I just had a look and the Auckland Council do inorganic collections. Ana Fierek I would like to see the council collect the rubbish from charity shops once a month. Cay Cockerell I have always thought NCC could help in some way...but that doesn’t get to the root of the problem, poor people, lazy people, disrespectful people. Suzette Shldz

Council should put in cameras - won't stop some people but name and shame might be a deterrent, dump fees are expensive. Liz McBride If the dump fees were a bit cheaper it might help. Kay Williams I think the problem will only increase, what about decent cameras and large consequences. Karen Mackey Most want Haulashore jetty repaired: Repair the jetty instead of wasting money on Lewis Stanton. Nelsonia Today Floating jetty sounds great. Ian Askin How many per cent of Nelson's more than 19,000 residences were asked to take part in this online survey? Albert Smithson

544 Waimea Road, Nelson

but are small by comparison. The big change is taking billions more off road users across New Zealand, slashing highway funding and giving it to Auckland and Wellington tram and train commuters. This 10 year plan means the chances of seeing any significant upgrades of SH6 or SH60 in our region are close to zero. We have done the Richmond Deviation in the 1990s, the Stoke Bypass in the 2000s and the Ruby Bay Bypass in 2012. National had budgeted $135 million for the Southern Link starting before

2020 and that was without the 10 cents hike in petrol tax. I worry about Nelson and Tasman’s future with this plan. Our vehicle fleet is projected to grow from 100,000 to 120,000 over this decade, but without roading investment it means more congestion and more accidents. Taking an extra $10 million a year out of households in the region will also negatively impact our economy. This plan from Nelson’s perspective is nothing short of highway robbery.

Every few weeks the Nelson Weekly speaks to someone interesting doing something interesting at either Burger Culture of the Vic Brewbar. This time we sit down with Paula Ossevoort, a fashion designer who helped found the Christmas Market at Founders Heritage Park and the Little Beehive Co-op. We speak about being creative and entrepreneurial in Nelson. How did you start out being a designer? I have always been pretty creative. My mum’s an artist. I used to be a chef but didn’t like the hierarchy of the kitchens. I wanted to work on my own so I learned how to sew in my 20s. And I’ve always liked clothes. I started making clothes and selling to friends, at markets and online and it went from there. Then you decided to help set up the Christmas market? When my son was born I started making kids’ clothes and set up an online store. I met two other women who were doing similar things so we teamed up to do the Saturday market. From then we decided to set up a Christmas market. That was six years ago. It seemed like there was a gap for

RAy McKENziE - Business founder 1948

Seventy years and still going strong – good cause for a celebration this month at McKenzies Paint Contractors, which has been doing it right since 1948! These days, with the competitive nature of the painting and decorating industry, it’s very rare for a business to outlast its founder. It’s even more exceptional for that business to remain in the hands of the same family. But this is the case for the McKenzies. The burgeoning business was founded in 1948 by the late Ray McKen-

humble beginnings. As the original sole employee, Ray worked from home at 74 Russell Street, Nelson, using his family garage to store all his paint and equipment. Then in 1972, 43 Parkers Road became the head office for Ray and his staff. “Ray went through an apprenticeship with a local company, before going out on his own,” says Glenn McKenzie. “Then after two years of being a sole operator Ray took on staff. “Ray was very much like Terry, myself and Nathan —your

Ray’s reputation started to grow around the town and, in his heyday, he had around 30 guys working under him.” Glenn said he was ‘just a painter’ when Ray approached him and said “what are you going to do – are you going to take on the business?” Although it was a big outlay for a young man to buy into the company, Glenn decided to take it on and, six months later, Ray announced he would be retiring (1986). Which is exactly what happened. Over the decades, Glenn and Terry McKenzie have followed through with Glenn’s vision to take McKenzies Paint Contractors a long way. “We set goals about what we wanted to achieve, and we have always been open to learning. When we took on the spray business, we didn’t really know a lot about spraying, but

We are also

the only local fully certified spray factory, with all the health and safety boxes ticked.” McKenzies operate a very busy dedicated spray factory, with bookings often months in advance. “We service most of the joiners in town; they have trouble quantifying spending $150,000 or $200,000 putting in a dedicated spray factory, and because health and safety compliance is so strong now they would rather source their business out to the likes of us,” says Glenn. “It’s the

part of the business that has come on in leaps and bounds. We set a high standard 19 years ago, and it’s lifted the game for everyone. There’s some very good quality work that comes out of our factory; 99 percent of the time, it generates a high end product which is value for money. For example, an old kauri dining table which has had 30 years life in it – it’s all beaten up, kids have chewed on the corners and so on, then it gets all spruced up in our spray factory for around $500; we can

enhance its value by around 600 per cent.” Other reasons why McKenzies has been so successful for so long, are good old-fashioned things like “loyalty, accountability, consistency, fairness, and quality,” says Glenn. “Our name is on our business. We are accountable. Some people hide behind their name, but you are accountable for the work you do. Our name goes on every job, so we make sure every job comes up to a standard we are happy

with.” Meanwhile, not only are many of McKenzies’ clients repeat customers, but loyalty is reciprocated by the business. “All our key suppliers are local. If we buy a piece of sandpaper, we buy it out of local shop. We pay a bit more for it but it keeps that big wheel rolling,” says Glenn. When it comes to quality, McKenzies stands by its workmanship. “Every person that works at the company is a qualified tradesperson. They know their trade. And after their work is completed,

REVIEW: Phantom debuts at Theatre Royal Kate Russell For the first time ever, the Phantom of the Opera is in Nelson – and it won’t disappoint. The Nelson Youth Theatre company kicked off their two week run of the classic Andrew Lloyd Webber musical on Sunday night at a packed out Theatre Royal. Directed by Richard Carruthers, it was dark, big, loud and misty - everything you could ask for in one of the world’s favourite love stories. The musical tells the story of a masked figure who lives beneath the Paris Opera House, exercising a reign of terror over all who inhabit it. He falls in love with a young soprano, Christine, and devotes himself to nurturing her talents. With a triple cast sharing the load, the audience was treated to the ‘Team Sophie’ rendition, with Sophie McCarlie playing

Sophie McCarlie as Christine and Seth Blackburn as Raoul. Photo: James Winch. a mesmerising Christine while Daniel de Clercq commanded as the Phantom. Seth Blackburn (Raoul) and Rhiannon Griffiths (Carlotta) also played their roles with flair, and the rest of the local cast impressed with their singing and choreography amidst the murder and mayhem. Phantom is not an easy production to stage, but the crew utilized the space well - nail-

ing the floating candles, magical devices and a seamlessly travelling boat. Two portable royal boxes on either side of the theatre auditorium were constructed especially for the show. And of course, there was the music - Angel of Music, Music of the Night, Think of Me, All I Ask of You and The Phantom of the Opera were all done justice – big ups to the musical directors Melanie Carruthers, Ewen Griffiths and Jane Bayley. Despite being on a much smaller scale than any Broadway or West End version, it stood up to the challenge and Nelson is very lucky to have this kind of talent right on our doorstep. This is another youth theatre production to be proud of. Make sure you don't miss it. The Phantom of the Opera continues at the Theatre Royal until April 21. Tickets are available from the theatre or TicketDirect.

From there he bought a fleet of children’s karts for children over nine years old. “So then our demographic widened,” says Nick. “After that we built some two-seater karts to take children aged three and older with their Mum or Dad.” This year Prokarts go karting is celebrating its 10th birthday with special promotions happening now! Jonty Dine One of Nelson’s favourite sons is returning home. The Mike Pero Nelson Giants have secured the signature of Tall Black captain and New Zealand Breakers star Mika Vukona for the 2018 NBL season. The 35-year-old is a five-time NBL championship winner and is currently leading the Tall Blacks in the Commonwealth Games. After taking a well-deserved break, Mika will be returning to Nelson from Auckland where he started his career in a Giants jersey in 2000. Giants general manager Bill Dahlberg says Mika is a fierce competitor, has a wealth of experience and will be a great mentor. “We have a young talented team and to have Mika wanting to assist the Giants in getting back to being a force in the NBL is brilliant.” The Giants have also recruited a new head coach for the 2018 season. Jamie Pearlman, who has spent the last six years in the NBL, will take the reins from Brendon Bailey who stepped in after Alan McAughtry was sacked at the start of last season. TENNIS: The summer tennis season wrapped up for the juniors on Saturday with the Nelson regional tournament. As an introductory tournament, court sizes were modified to suit each age level. Red level was won by Matai Arnott, followed by the orange level winners Max Murdock and Lucas Swarbrick with Allen Collins winning the green. Christie Gilbert and Charlotte Osborn won the 16’s girl’s doubles, followed by Rani McGuire and Tina Waine taking the 14’s girls doubles title. Number one seeds, Maisson Begg and Lucy Mitchell won the 10’s girls doubles while Harry Pugh and Finn Brown took out the 12’s boy’s doubles title in straight sets. Christie Gilbert won the 16/18 girls singles final and the girls 14’s singles final was won by Rani McGuire.

“They have such passion for the club and there is a tremendous culture which is crucial for success.” Jamie was the assistant coach of the Cairns Taipans for six years. He also coached in the Queensland State League for five seasons, winning a championship with the Cairns Marlins. He says when the opportunity came up to coach the Giants, he jumped at it. “The level of talent and professionalism here is great so I was really keen to ply my trade here with the Giants.” A number of new additions to the roster will see a strong squad to select from. Jamie has brought the near-sevenfoot American Jerry Evans Jnr with him from Cairns. He says Jerry is a great culture guy, very skilful and has utility value. “The reason why I bought him here because he exemplifies that team first attitude.” The squad has a strong look to it, with Tohi Smith-Milner making the move north from the Rams and Tall Black Finn Delany back on board when he returns from the Commonwealth Games. The Giants will open their campaign against the Super City Rangers at the Trafalgar Centre on April 28.

League comp down to three teams Jonty Dine Reporter

jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Rugby league in Nelson appears to be on its knees but the sport's new chairwoman is confident the code can get back to its feet. The senior club competition kicked off on Saturday, with only three teams competing, Victory Phoenix Vikings, Wairau Taniwha and Motueka Tigers. The two teams which competed in last season's grand final, Rich-

mond Rabbits and Wanderers Wolves are both missing from this year's competition. New Tasman Rugby League chairwoman Leanne Anderson says she wants to make positive changes but admits it's a tough start. “My vision is to make league great in the region and there are some challenges around that. “We are very disappointed our finalists have had to pull out but we do hope to see them back in action next year, and on a bright

note we have picked up Motueka who re-enter for the first time since 2011.” She says the West Coast competition are down to two teams this year, so this isn’t just a Tasman issue, “it’s nation-wide.” Leanne will meet with West Coast Rugby League in Greymouth this week to look at starting a combined competition. She says the board is also in the process of appointing a new rugby league development officer and are looking to expand the

school rugby league competitions which already includes the Simon Mannering and Proban Cups. Sam Hedges was an integral part of the Rabbits successful 2017 campaign and says he's "gutted" to see the team fold. “It was a great club. The Rabbits had connections, they got Marvin Curry to the Manly Sea Eagles and they were instrumental in myself making NZ universities, I really hope league in the region can hang in there because there are so many great pathways

for players in the game.” Sam has decided to play for Motueka this season and says early signs from the new Tasman Rugby League Board give him confidence for the future of the code. “They have only just started and I must say they are very astute, the personnel they have on board are people like Roy Wattie who understand the game.” On the field, the Victory Phoenix beat the Taniwha 36-12, at Champion Green in Richmond on Saturday.

Duckshooters; time to dustdown With duck shooting just around the corner the Nelson Waimea Gun club are holding their very popular Duckshooters shoot this Sunday, starting at 9am. A chance to dust down those shotguns and get your eye in just in time for opening day. With over $3000 in prizes and food and ammo available, it's also a great day out. And it’s open to the general public so long as you hold a firearms licence. Club spokesperson Chris Scully says that most hunters shoot on the first few days then the guns go back into the safe, so this is a great safe way to practice the skills and make sure the shotgun is operating safely and reliably. A number of club members are also on hand to help and advise if needed. A big turnout last year meant the days are very popular and it's also another way the club can raise funds to keep the grounds in such good condition. Shooters in general are welcome, even if you just want to put a few thru the ole side-by-side, you don’t have to be a duckshooter.

Other than the annual tweak to the ruck and scrum laws for the 2018 season, NZ Rugby have also increased the punishment for players not wearing mouthguards. Players seen without one will

concede a penalty and a yellow card. Any player found without a mouthguard after a yellow has been issued will receive a red card and a one-week suspension. Mike says with a mass exodus of players from 2017, this season will see a number of new stars shine. “Obviously, we have lost a big nucleus of players to higher honours and some guys have hung up their boots, but it creates opportunities for a new crop to come through.” Mike backs Waimea to be the front runners this year. “I’m tipping my hat towards seeing some surprises from Renwick as well as Marist and Stoke, I think those will be the four leading teams.” With such a large new core of players from college and outside the province, there will be big opportunities for players to stake their claim in 2018. The teams are: Waimea Old Boys 2017-Champions. Ones to watch: Returning Blues players Billy Guyton and Sam Prattley who will both spend the season with Waimea after several Super Rugby campaigns with the Blues.

Helliwell a Warrior again Jonty Dine Reporter

jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Nelson man Ethan Helliwell completed a hat-trick of Wairua Warrior wins on Saturday. The annual obstacle mud run at Happy Valley Adventures saw hundreds of hearty locals getting muddy and bloody in a bid to call themselves the ultimate warrior. Ethan was first to finish the 12km course, comfortably ahead of his nearest rival. "I’m stoked about that, today I just felt like I was on,” Ethan said. Ethan said he wasn’t as prepared as he was last year but that may have worked in his favour. "Right from the start you have to be pushing it and hope at the end there’s nothing funny that will blow it out, I just pushed the whole way.” Ethan said runners "hooned off

out in front” at the start and he worried he should be keeping up with them. "They blew out after a couple of km, so I just tried to hold myself back to my pace, I’m not too buggered.” Wairua Warrior club president Greg Witika said it was another fantastic event which doubles as a fundraiser for the Nelson Tasman Life Education trust. He said it was a "lovely day" and the course looked awesome. Greg said they stepped things up a bit this year on the obstacles course. "We increased the difficulty but kept the element of fun.” He said he wants to take it to a level where people go away and think ‘wow I have to train harder for that next time.’ This year saw five new additions to the obstacle course including an inverted ladder, a water carry

time of one hour and six minutes. "I’m very happy with that, I took it pretty easy because I wanted to get through obstacles and not do burpees,” Kim said. Kim lost his balance on one of the final obstacles which cost him a 30-burpee penalty. "I was gutted to fall off what was a relatively simple one but just need to compose a bit more, those burpees are brutal.” Kim originally entered the 12km but then went on a run with some mates and realised he’s not the person he was 20 years ago. "I’m glad I did the 6km because my legs are really blowing now.” Kim and his wife had a new baby just two weeks ago, so "six was enough.” The ex-army man says he might get ambitious next year and do the 12km course. "I was just the best of the rest, really.”

PUBLIC SAFETY MESSAGE

SAFETY CHECKS WHEN PAINTING AND MAINTAINING YOUR HOME Here is a list of safety checks to consider when painting or maintaining your home: • Always check where overhead power lines and cables are situated before using a ladder when painting your home. • Metal ladders are excellent conductors of electricity. Anyone touching a ladder when it is touching a power line could be electrocuted. Wind, uneven ground or reaching to the side while on a ladder could cause it to shift position and you could come into contact with an overhead power line. • Keep in mind clearance requirements when undertaking house extensions and renovations, such as painting, installing new windows or building a deck. • Before you do any work near overhead power lines or underground cables, arrange with Nelson Electricity to disconnect the supply for safety. • Never touch overhead power lines, underground cables or the bare conductors that connect them to the house as this could be fatal.

Golden Jo wins Nelson's first medal at Comm Games

Jonty Dine

They left it late, but Nelson Suburbs have opened their season with a win. The first round of Nelson Bays Football first division saw a stalemate on the cards at Saxton, both Suburbs and Nelson College playing cautious football in the opening spell. But with just on five minutes remaining, Josh Smith netted for the hosts to take a 1-0 lead. The closing stages saw a desperate college team throw everything at Suburbs, but some strong defence saw Suburbs take the hard-earned victory. Suburbs coach Jaap Van de Geest says he is absolutely delighted with the win. "It's very important we start the season with a clean sheet and to win against a quality college side is just fantastic." Jaap says his side have a lot of ground to make up for after last year's poor season. "Their effort was 110 per cent today, so I can't complain." He says during the last ten minutes, the heart-rate was quite elevated but Jaap had a lot of faith in his troops. "They

The former United Club bowler was trailing Laura Daniels from Wales 1713 before scoring the last eight shots of the contest to claim another gold medal to go with her singles gold in Glasgow in 2014 and doubles in Manchester in 2002. She told the New Zealand Herald that her experience helped her rally from behind. "I've been really calm, I don't know what the hell is up with that. "I'm an old hand, so the kids in my team tell me. Moving here a year ago I don't think that's done me any harm, playing in the Queensland premier league against the blokes week in, week out. It just hones your skills – you know you've got to compete." Jo will now turn her attention to the pairs where she will team up with fellow Nelsonian Val Smith.

It’s FREE!

pUBliC nOTiCe Walk for life NelsoN Nelson will be hosting a Walk for Life on Saturday 21 April at 12 noon. It is a Celebration of Life from conception to natural death and is a family friendly event. Its aim is to make a peaceful, respectful and nonjudgmental statement that human life is precious and worth living.

PALMER

It is not a protest march. Walkers are invited to bring their own signs in the spirit of the event, no protest banners or inappropriate statements.

9 April 2016

Start and finish are at the top of the steps of Nelson Cathedral. Duration about 1 hour. It will be on rain or shine. Marshalls will guide and help people as they walk. This is a rare opportunity to make a difference. Join us on the day.

Janice Ann

Remembering you is easy, we do it every day, missing you is a heartache, That never goes away. Stuart & Family
