Weekly celebrates birthday There are two massive news stories for us at the Nelson Weekly this week.

First, the Rugby World Cup which kicks off on Friday night, the second is a bit closer to home – our birthday!

One year ago today the first ever issue of Nelson Weekly was printed and delivered to 20,000 homes and businesses. So now, after a truly amazing year, the region’s only locally owned newspaper can celebrate in style.

On that first front page we covered a story of Nelson about to celebrate a year until the start of the Rugby World Cup with a mass haka at Tahuanui beach. Close to 2500 people turned out on that day and it seems interest in the cup is still growing with thousands welcoming the Italian team over the past four days.

Also on that front page we proclaimed: “We are here to tell the stories of our beautiful region and give advertisers real horse power in the market.”

One year on we can proudly say we have achieved just that. We have covered hundreds of events, been welcomed into scores of homes and spoken to a huge range of Nelsonians about the regions issues, great yarns, quirky tales and high achievers. turned up for an official welcome at Whakatu Marae on Saturday and another few hundred sat in the sun at Saxton Oval to watch the team train on Sunday.

And now organisers are urging Nelson to help put the “full house” signs up at Trafalgar Park for its three games, after figures released to media last week showed strong ticket sales in the city.

Sixty percent of available tickets to the games, or 30,000 tickets, have been sold and organiser, Rugby New Zealand 2011 Ltd, says it expects it to be “at or near full capacity”.

Aldo says he would like to take it one step further. “I want to issue a challenge to Nelsonians to buy tickets and sell out all of our matches. I’ve said it before: a family of four can go for under $100, that’s an affordable night out for the family. We must do this Nelson.”

Forty percent of ticket holders to Nelson’s matches are coming from outside the region to see Australia, Russia, USA and Italy play matches in Nelson. RNZ 2011 says that ticket sales point to an in-

flux of fans from other countries as well.

“It’s all great news for us as a host city, but also for local businesses.”

Nelson Regional Director Susan Coleman says three sold-out matches would be a huge success for Nelson’s legacy as a large event destination.

“Seeing Nelson on international TV with a packed stadium and thousands

of screaming fans will be a huge coup for this city and for the council. If we can prove we’ve hosted the third-largest sporting event in the world with grand success, we can host anything.”

Liquid owner Craig Lines will be swapping cocktails for sex tales in a more ‘adults only’ approach to the Rugby World Cup as his bar promotes a safe sex message tied up in a competition for the weirdest place you have “done it.”

Dubbed ‘Take one for the team,’ Craig has set up a Facebook page where contestants can enter their “most interesting experience” on the page’s wall in the lure of the $300 big night out voucher. “The Telecom advert – abstaining from sex to support the All Blacks – we felt was a pretty sad way of supporting them,” says Craig. “Everyone loves sex. So let’s encourage people to have fun while they show their support for their favourite team.”

But it’s not just about scoring off the field, Craig is hoping the competition will promote “safe consensual sex between adults,” and has received donations of condoms from the local sexual health clinic. And while there will also be brochures and information about safe sex, Craig is aware there will definitely be a mixed reaction to the campaign.

Trolley derby fans got to taste a second round of racing action over the weekend and at the same time perhaps become movie stars.

Filming for the movie Kiwi Flyer has been happening around Nelson for the past few weeks and over the weekend it took to Collingwood St, the home of Nelson’s famous Trolley Derby.

Scenes shot included actor Edward Hall, who plays trolley racer Ben, racing down Collingwood St and then winning his race. Nelson spectators were also filmed cheering him on and mayor Aldo Miccio played himself, handing over the trophy to “Ben”.

The movie features a cast of New Zealand actors, including comedian Dai Henwood and Aussie Vince Martin, of Beaurepaires Tyre advert-fame.

Anneka Paul Half naked boys lurking around Nelson College for Girls isn’t something the school usually encourages – but it makes an exception for arts week.

NCG’s Pirates of the Caribbean themed arts week had students getting involved and having fun in a variety of thrilling school activities.

‘Paint a Boy’ proved most popular among students with the opportunity to be creative and get their hands dirty. Joe Bennion, one of many

somewhat reluctant volunteers from Nelson College participated in the event. “It’s terrible. I don’t know how I’m going to get it off, but its good fun,” he says.

Students who didn’t participate in the hands on action looked on as the boys strutted down the catwalk painted head to toe in aid of the afternoons entertainment. Creators of the body paint designs had a lot to say about their Nelson College models. Melissa Fuller says the event was fun, while Julia Cooper enjoyed the atmosphere.

“It’s awesome,” she says, “everyone’s having fun.”

Good wine, good food, great neighbours For forty years Eugene and Giuseppina Harder have lived at Poynter’s Crescent and for 40 years they have made it a great place to live.

The couple raised their three children in the house after they moved to Nelson from Europe, and neighbours say their kindness continues to rub off to this day, earning them the Good Neighbour of the Year award for the Tahunanui region.

The annual awards recognise the region’s top neighbours in the four community constable areas of Stoke, Victory, Tahunanui and Nelson city and were announced at a ceremony last month.

Eugene and Giuseppina, originally from Switzerland and Italy respectively, moved to New Zealand with their eldest child after Eugene “fell in love” with Nelson while on a visit with friends years earlier. He told Giuseippina if she didn’t like it they could move back in a couple of years, but she says the friends they made and the “beautiful city” kept them here.

Now the pair are proud Nelsonians, even flying the city’s flag from their sunny deck. Their neighbours say

the couple make living at Poynter’s Crescent a pleasure.

“Anyone who has ever lived on Poynter’s Crescent will know the Harders. They make living on the street the most special location in Nelson and are the best neighbours you could ever imagine,” wrote nominators Ben and Ella Salt.

Giuseppina and Eugene greet new neighbours with homemade gnocchi and pavlova, Italian donuts and wine. Giusepinna, a talent chef and seamstress, has made curtains for her neighbours and has taught many of her neighbours how to make mozzarella cheese with “all day lessons on her sunny balcony”.

The pair also share fruit, vegetables and nuts from their garden, collect mail when neighbours are away, water plants, take neighbours to the airport, shares tools, trim trees and even fill in neighbours potholes.

They say they were surprised and humbled by the award but say they enjoy being close to their neighbours. “It is normal and healthy,” says Giuseppina.

When former Nayland College old boy Lee Babe came home to take up the top job at Nelmac he couldn’t believe his luck.

“I always wanted to come back to Nelson, the lifestyle is fantastic, but I thought I would have to wait until I was around fifty, so to be able to come back in a job like this is great,” says the 37 year-old CEO. Lee got the chief executive job at Nelmac after the retirement of long-time boss Malcolm

The latest craze in boys toys is flying into local homes says its retailer.

Police sting drivers Local police have been pulling over drivers every 15 minutes in an effort to increase road safety.

In the first weekend alone, hundreds of drivers in the Tasman Policing District, which includes Nelson, Marlborough, West Coast and Tasman were pulled over with some facing punishment for speeding, lack of warrant or registration, drink drivers and people not driving to their licence conditions.

The campaign, dubbed Operation Sustain, is aimed at reducing road trauma by high visibility policing and positive intervention.

Tasman District road policing manager, Inspector Jenni Richardson, says all motorists can expect to be stopped anywhere, at any time.

“Anyone who exceeds the posted speed limit will be stopped, but we will also be doing wide ranging random checks. Young drivers, learners and people driving unkempt vehicles will be a priority, but we’re not excluding any road users from this campaign.”

In the year to date in the Tasman Police District 14 people have been killed on the roads.

ACC Injury Prevention Consultant Mark Preston-Thomas says 631 people were significantly injured in the Nelson region over the past five years, costing ACC more than $13 million.

Local faces to decorate RWC ‘party zone’ Nelson rugby fans watching the semi finals and final of the Rugby World Cup will be surrounded by bright colourful local faces even on the walls.

Local photographer Glen Bisdee was

commissioned to take a series of eyecatching photos to go up on the walls around the fanzone, which will be on Trafalgar St from the Museum to the Cathedral. The images will be roughly

a metre and a half high and feature local people supporting a range of teams playing at the world cup, including all of those playing in Nelson. The fanzone will be erected in October.

Council would have needed a majority to vote in favour of the proposal to progress it, a tied vote was not sufficient. Infrastructure Portfolio Holder Councillor Gail Collingwood says, “While there was support for going back to the community with a clean slate on this project, there were also concerns about the timing of it and the cost of the consultation we’d been advised we’d need to undertake. In the end there wasn’t the appetite around the council table to consult any further on this project.”

Discs fly into BP Five young business-savy students will see a familiar sight on the shelves of the South Island’s BP service stations this summer, following the announcement that 220 of their Young Enterprise Scheme product, Power Discs, will be stocked by the petrol giants.

Power Discs are rubber frisbees made from used car tyres.

Along with the sense of accomplishment, more than $1100 will be deposited in to the Garin College students’ company’s bank account, giving them a $1000 profit for the

year, not bad considering the yearlong enterprise scheme is still running. “Out of all the products in New Zealand we got chosen, which is pretty cool because there’s so many teams,” says Georgia Goodman. “When we found out we thought 100 frisbees, but they’ve ordered 220, so we better get our act together.”

BP, who have supported the programme for the past 18 years, selected five Lion Foundation Young Enterprise products national wide for BP retail outlets.

Blue September is held each year and encourages all men over the age of 40 to have a prostate check. This year, the campaign takes on even more significance with the rate of annual deaths resulting from prostate cancer in New Zealand

increasing from over 550 to 670 every year.

This happens because men don’t know how dangerous the disease is, says Ian Chapman.

“They don’t talk to their doctor about it, they simply don’t do anything about it.”

House mystery solved thanks to Weekly reader Ian Mortimer got the surprise of his life when he was reading an issue of the Waimea Weekly last month – his house was in it.

Each week the Nelson Weekly and Waimea Weekly run glass plate photos provided by the Nelson Provincial Museum hoping readers will uncover information relating to the photos. But Ian was more surprised that no one knew anything about it. “It was like it was a mystery, but how is it a mystery? It’s our house,” he says. “I was actually at work working late and I thought I’d read it, saw it there and thought ‘that’s our house.’ And I knew because I had been painting it and you sort of know.”

Ian understands the house, on the Appleby highway, was built in 1849 for Henry Redwood as the

villa for the Redwood Stables. He believes the stables were the first in Australasia specifically for breeding racehorses and has photos from different angles of the house. One section of the house, shown in the original photo, was burned down in a fire. The title with the glass plate read Bolton House, although Ian in unsure where that name came from.

Museum CEO Peter Millward says Ian’s finding is just one of plenty received by the Museum thanks to the Nelson Weekly and Waimea Weekly.

“It’s precisely why we put it in,” he says. “We have to work with the people to verify that their recollections are correct, but when it comes to a physical house still in existence it’s a heck of a lot easier.”

Good deed earns taxi driver a punch to the face Coming to the aid of some frightened youths proved to be rather costly for a good samaritan taxi driver in the early hours of Saturday morning.

At 4.30am, a 17 year-old male was getting aggressive towards a group of youths on Waimea Rd. The taxi driver, unnamed by police, pulled over to make sure they were alright. That was enough for the offender to punch the driver.

Police were called and the 17 year-old was arrested for assault and threatening behaviour.

Stoke Bowling Club’s opening day is Saturday 17 Sept.

Anyone interested in taking up the sport either competively or socially is most welcome.

Club Development Officer Bill Kindley says committees have been active over the winter months planning a varied programme. The club is participating in the nationwide Bowls NZ “Have a Go” in early October and organising several open tournaments throughout the season as well as twilight tournaments over the Christmas and New Year to attract people who are holidaying in the area. The club will be promoting Inter-college bowls, encouraging secondary school students to take part in the national secondary schools competition and hosting the Westpac Halberg Trust disabled bowls.

Club days are on Wednesdays and Fridays as well as business league commencing in February. Many who participated in this have ended up playing the game competitively.

Coaching is available on Mondays throughout the season to develop and improve skills. Sessions covering introductory bowls are held on Tuesday mornings.

Development squads targeting young bowlers are being established which is a pathway to being selected for New Zealand squads.

A car synonymous with motor sport and New Zealand’s own historic motor racing achievements will be at the CRT Richmond FarmCentre this Friday 9 September.

The Gulf-branded replica Mark II Ford GT40 is part of The Great Gulf Roadshow and will give people an opportunity to get up close with a replica of the iconic car which rose to fame in the late 1960s.

It was New Zealand racing legends Bruce McLaren, Chris Amon and Denny Hulme who catapulted the Mark II Ford GT40 into stardom when they won at Le Mans in 1966.

The Ford GT40 won more prestigious events than any other road-race car in history. It also had an extremely successful relationship with Gulf Oil with branded cars also winning at Le Mans in 1967 and 1968.

The Roadshow will also include more information about the Gulf oil products, guest speakers, spot prizes, a chance to win hot laps in the car and a barbecue lunch. Staff have also organised one day only Roadshow specials – low prices on a whole range of top products. Everyone is welcome.

With a lack of opportunities in New Zealand, promising young baseballer Dominic Mahutu-Mason is jetting off to the sport’s homeland in search of a clearer career pathway, just two years after picking up the sport.

The 18 year-old batter has represented both the New Zealand Under-17 and Under-21 baseball sides, following a 13 year stint in softball -- the more common form of the game in this part of the world -- and is confident it will take his game to the next level.

After a short taste of American baseball in the New Zealand Under-17’s tour of the United States last year, Dominic will be returning to the land of opportunity this week, enrolling himself at Spokane Falls Community College, just another step towards a professional career. Dominic is hoping to impress enough in his two years to land a full scholarship at an NCAA level university, as well as contin-

uing his education. “The nerves are starting to kick in. I won’t know anyone over there at all,” the former Nayland College student says. “But it should be pretty good.”

Dominic says the transition from softball to baseball was tough, but hasn’t looked back since he first played the sport for the national age-grade team. “It was different. It was the first games of baseball we had ever played, because we had only done the training over here. The transition is a lot harder than you think, it seems pretty similar but it’s a lot different.”

Dominic played for HP Black in Auckland’s premier baseball competition, one of only three cities in the country to feature a baseball league. And it was his coaches in the country’s largest city that helped him obtain a spot at Spokane Falls. “As soon as I first played baseball I wanted to go to college because the standard over there is all pretty high.” Dominic jets off this Friday.

Slow start costs Rival Cougars While Nayland College were out of the blocks smartly, a slow start by Rival Cougars cost them a berth in next week’s Grade 1 final.

Overall Rival have had a more consistent season however the slate is wiped clean come semi finals and the performance on the day is the one that counts.

Although the teams traded goals in the opening minutes it was Nayland’s six unanswered goals later in the first quarter that gave the college side the all important buffer. Shooters Deanna Hunter and Olivia Clark rewarded their feeders with 100 percent accuracy to lead 9-5 at the first break.

Rival attempted to slow the flow into the shooters by switching goal keep, Kim Loftus and wing defence, Louise Knight however they took the opportunity to return to their starting positions in an injury break.

Strong defence by goal defence, Sara Reidie and promoted keeper, Kim Parkinson gained valuable ball which was delivered with precision by Michaela Matenga and Brianna Joyes which enabled Nayland

to increase their lead to 21-11 at the major break.

Rival shooters, Renee Bouzaid and Justin Stebbings switched bibs which paid dividends in the second half. Louise snatched a couple of intercepts while Lisa Thompson was a steady link through court. Sophie Adams made an impact off the bench at wing attack and delivered some great feeds to her shooters.

The college team will be thanking their lucky stars that they had the solid first half which gave them the platform for the win. While Rival will be rueing the fact, considering they outscored Nayland in the second half only to come up short 27-35.

Nayland now have a tough encounter to look forward to when they meet Nelson College A in next week’s final. There will be one spectator at Saxton Stadium sitting on the fence though – Mrs Anita Hannen (a former New Zealand basketball representative) has a granddaughter in each team, Rebecca Reidie will suit up for Girls College while younger sister, Sara will play for Nayland. And then add into the mix that daughter Andrea is the coach of Nelson – no doubt it will lead to a bit of friendly banter during the week!

Kasey skates into NZ team

Despite competing in a different country, it will be familiar surroundings for New Zealand junior artistic roller skater Kasey Murdoch when she takes on the world for the second time, in November.

The 16 year-old student competed at the World Junior Artistic Roller Skating Championship in Portugal, but will be wheeling off to Brasilia, Brazil, a much more experienced competitor for the 2011 edition.

Kasey finished 24th place last year, but has her eyes set on breaking in to the top 20. “I did alright, it was a good experience though and I had heaps of fun,” says Kasey. “I’m definitely looking at doing better this year because I’m in the same grade.”

Kasey has been figure skating for 11 years, although it was a long time between her first and second skate on the rink. “My gran bought me some skates, just some cheap ones, and I asked mum if she could take me down here to learn to skate. So she took me down

but didn’t take me back for a year because I was so bad.”

But following some prolonged periods of nagging, Kasey got her wish to return to the rink and hasn’t looked back, competing against the best the world has to offer. Kasey says she would not be where she is today without Mat Charles of Team Boxman Sport and her coach Pam Peters. Mat has eased the funding of Kasey’s overseas trips. “He has pretty much paid for everything for the last four years. He’s amazing and I’m so lucky to have him.”

Kasey often travels to Palmerston North and Auckland for competitions but says the pinnacle of competing against the world’s best was definitely a career highlight.

Determination, motivation will be driving Kasey in a sport that does have its fair share of big falls, but it’s not something she pays attention to. “You have to get used to falling and bruising, but you just have to get back up and try again.”

The Tasman Titans met their match in the form of the Canterbury Under-20’s in Brightwater on Sunday, going down 34-20 in a tight encounter. After defeating West Coast last week, the Titans pushed their younger counterparts for the majority of the game before falling off in the latter stages. Case study: Elaine Shields, physiotherapist of NMDHB When Pollyanna, a 50 year old female first self referred for treatment for bilateral achilles tendonopathy, she had had symptoms for several months. It was affecting her ability to walk far and she found she hobbled in the mornings when first getting out of bed. There was a palpable painful lump on the right medial achilles tendon. Six months later she was seen by an Orthopaedic Surgeon who referred her back to physiotherapy for stretches and strengthening. Her calf stretches were revised and corrected together with a diligent eccentric strengthening programme on the edge of steps.

Progress was monitored monthly.

Strengthening was progressed by adding weight in a bag worn around her body.

Each morning she would begin her working day by donning her weights and performing her exercises on the steps with many encouraging comments from all who witnessed her commitment.

Slowly the lump appeared to become smaller and less painful. Over a period of 18 months the lump disappeared.

She was able to walk on uneven ground and at some distance without pain, which was her original goal.

It has been a lesson to both me, the therapist, and Pollyanna, the patient in pure commitment, compliance and perseverance that has paid off with positive results.

The moral of the story is to hang in there, especially with the tendonopathies for the long haul. A lot of patients would understandably have given up when no results were apparent after 4 to 6 weeks but our experience as therapists and research tell us these results are possible.

FOOTBALL: The final of the Glen Stephens Memorial Trophy is being held this Saturday at Jubilee Park. Defending champions Tahuna will line up against Golden Bay at 1.15pm.

Nelson’s Gage Brown is rubbing shoulders with future Olympic champions and perhaps fighting some too.

But the gutsy boxer says he is more excited than nervous as he prepared to take off to the Junior Commonwealth Games in the Isle of Man this week.

Gage is one of three boxers in the New Zealand team and is fortunate to have his coach and mentor Steve Mitchell along for the ride. Steve is the team’s coach and says knowing Gage’s abilities is a huge asset for both of them.

“I know how hard to work him, how to prepare him and how to get the best out of him,” he says.

The knockout tournament means one poor round could be the end of the road but Gage says he is confident of doing well.

“I’d like to get a medal but it’s hard to tell because we’ve got no idea what the other fighters are like.”

Gage qualified for the Games after winning the New Zealand amateur title and the Golden Gloves.

Steve says finding appropriate fighters has been the toughest part of the build up for them, with Gage needing to fight boxers with far more experience and weight.
