Festival Easter meets ANZAC numbers explode It is game on for party lovers in Nelson with another nine events confirmed for the Game On festival during the Rugby World Cup this spring. The total number of events now sits at 23, ranging from Russian-themed concerts, to beer festivals and golf tournaments. The festival is jam-packed with activities, aimed at providing entertainment for tourists in between games and allowing locals to enjoy the tournament in their own backyard. The Rugby World Cup is the third largest sporting event in the world and three games will be played in Nelson during the latter half of September and early October. Teams to play here include Italy, United States of America, Russia and Australia. RWC 2011 regional director Susan Coleman, says she is excited about the line up and the continued interest in the festival. “We’ve now got a great range of events, and events that will appeal to a wide range of people.” The nine new events are a WOW Rugbythemed exhibition at the World of Wearable Art Museum; exhibitions at the Suter Art Gallery; a production at Wakatu Marae; Oi You! an urban art festival; live performances at the Nelson School of Music; Taste Nelson; a Russian-themed concert at the Playhouse; Mixed foursomes golf championship and a Nelson Cycle Festival. Other events include a re-enactment of the first game of rugby in New Zealand and CBD market nights.

It won’t happen for another 27 years, but that will be little comfort for workers who missed out on a stat holiday this year, thanks to Easter Monday and ANZAC Day falling on the same day. But not everyone was upset about the anomaly, with the dual holiday making it extra special for some local Christians. The annual WWI Soldiers Memorial service on Church Hill is organised by the Nelson Cathedral and Nelson City Council and Revs’ Yvonne McLean and Jude Benton were there representing the church and say it has been a special long weekend for them. The Cathedral had already hosted Good Friday and Easter Sunday celebrations over the weekend. Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio was at the WWI memorial service and says the day was special for many Nelsonians. “I was impressed by the number of people that turned up for ANZAC Day services around the region and especially the number of young people.” But for many Nelsonians the rest over the long weekend has been tempered with the knowledge that they will miss out on one statutory holiday this year with both holiday’s falling on the same day. However, there will be some wait before the next meeting of the two public holidays. Easter Monday will not coincide EXTRA SPECIAL HOLIDAY: Rev Yvonne McLean and Rev Jude Benton at a WWI Soldiers Me- with ANZAC Day again until morial service at Church Hill on Easter Monday and ANZAC Day.
