Charles Anderson The region’s wasteful ways have been laid bare as it is revealed that the average person contributes almost 600kg a year to landfill. The Nelson Tasman Joint Waste Minimisation plan is now in the hands of both councils in the region and aims to set the region on a better course with how its businesses and residents deal with their waste. The latest regional waste assessment showed that each year about 62,000 tonnes of waste is sent to landfill in the Nelson Tasman region. Total waste to landfill peaked in 2008/09 at 68,700 tonnes and since then has varied between 61,400 and 66,600 tonnes per year. That equates to a total waste to landfill per capita of 598kg per person. The region has two landfills – one in York Valley and one in Eves Valley. The capacity of York Valley will be full in 12 years

Tasman District Council’s David Stephenson, who is assisting the regional plan, says that people have to be aware that not all plastics that are recycled find themselves into the sustainability cycle. “Buying something and throwing it into recycling bin is not the best you can do. Not buying or wasting is a much better outcome.” While glass, tin and aluminium cans, along with milk and soft drink bottles, can be recycled in New Zealand, pretty much eve-

rything else struggles to find an international market. All the region’s recycling comes to a Resource Recovery Centre on Fittal St, in Richmond. From there, the most recent material for international export has gone to Indonesia, since China stopped accepting the world’s waste. But there no centralised recording system to show how other regions are doing across the country. “How much we recycle is only part of the story,” says David. “The real gain is in avoided waste, which is difficult to measure.” The big contributor is commercial businesses which are responsible for 65 per cent of landfill waste. Dave says some people get overwhelmed thinking about the scale of the problem.

He says little things like cleaning your household plastic before recycling is really important. “At somewhere along the chain, if the plastic is dirty it will either need to be cleaned or thrown out. It’s much easier to clean it in your sink than expect someone else will do it for you.” If there is any hint of contamination on plastic, it makes it very hard to recycle. However, the better plan is not buying plastic at all. “When I’m buying things, I think ‘do I really need this’ or is there a way of getting this without getting plastic.” The regional plan will be deliberated on next month.

The city’s inaugural All Blacks test drew punters from as far as the United Kingdom, with local ticket sales making up just under half of the total bums on seats. The rest came from mainly Auckland, Canterbury and West Coast, Wellington and Blenheim. The men behind the test say that it’s testament to the pulling power the game and the city had. Local businessman Shane Drummond says All Black fever took over the town.

NEWS NZ Post Paxter trial approved: NCC approved the trial of NZ Post Paxters at last Thursday’s full council meeting. The trial starts in late October and will be stretched out over 18 months. It will begin with a six-month reconnaissance period with two Paxters, to check to see where they fit and where they don’t, and to finalise the exclusion zones. This will follow with a one-year “full roll out”. The electric delivery vehicles can reach speeds of up to 45km per hour, but in Nelson will have a limit of 15km. NZ Post have already successfully trialed Paxters in other parts of the country and they give extra capacity to meet growing de-

NCC votes against live-streaming workshops: Nelson City Council have voted not to live-stream its workshops. Last month, councillor Matt Lawrey moved a notice of motion to get council workshops livestreamed to increase council transparency. At Thursday’s full council meeting, councillors voted seven to five to not go ahead with the proposal. Most council meetings are already live-streamed on YouTube, but mayor Rachel Reese said more work on the proposal was needed before she could support it. Council have requested that a policy be developed for workshops, and that the use of live-streaming video be considered as part of that policy.

‘No magic wand’ for housing problems Kate Russell Reporter

The demand for community housing in Nelson continues to climb, with one local provider fielding five requests for housing a week - but only having five vacancies a year. The Nelson Tasman Housing Trust owns 43 rental properties, and leases another two, offering them at 70-80 per cent of market rates. But director Carrie Mozena says it’s not enough. “It’s heartbreaking. We get so many people saying ‘gosh, I need for a house, do you have anything?’ “But these are long-term secure rentals, so people only really move out of them if they are leaving town or need a bigger house.” Nelson City Council also has 147 community housing units but say they have faced “increasing challenges” with maintaining and increasing stock. Carrie says the cost of renting a home in Nelson is “diabolical”. “It’s stressful for families on low incomes who are having to pay upwards of $400 per week

We’re doing everything we can.” Community housing was just one of the issues put under the spotlight at the Top of the South Impact Forum on Friday. The forum provided an opportunity for community groups and residents to come together to explore ways to improve housing outcomes and share information on work already underway. Affordable home-ownership, emergency accommodation, an “outdated” resource management plan and homelessness were also discussed. Penny Molnar, from Community Action Nelson, said they had been “pushing for a forum for years” and were glad to fi-

nally see it happen. Housing New Zealand area manager Dale Bradley was able to share some positive news that their first new homes for Nelson in 15 years are due to be finished and tenanted by 27 September. They are four, one-bedroom properties on Kawai St. Another four, two-bedroom properties will be ready by mid-October, with more on the way in stage two, he said. Housing New Zealand currently houses 3,192 people in the region, with 191 people seeking homes in the past year. Carrie says the forum was a good opportunity for groups and individuals to put their heads together. “But now we need to see some action.”

Nelson turned it on for the 16th annual Cherry Blossom festival in Miyazu Gardens on Sunday.

Thousands of people streamed into the event to celebrate the city’s 42-year bond with sister-city Miyazu in Japan. Organisers estimate that more than 3000 people turned up, a record crowd for the event, to enjoy a day full of culture,

music, food, and, of course, beautiful spring blossoms under a perfect Spring day. Crowds were captivated by performances of traditional Japanese martial arts of aikido and kendo. Master calligrapher Yuta Ni-

What is the council doing for our CBD? Nelson City Council’s group manager for environmental management Clare Barton responds to the Nelson Weekly’s series on the CBD. We’re seeing rapid changes to the way people use our city centre and the businesses that operate within it. These changes are happening because the ways people work, shop and travel are changing - largely driven by the disruptive impact of digital technology. City centres are less about things we had to do in the past – for example, posting letters, visiting the bank or going shopping for the lowest price day-to-day goods. A city centre can’t, and shouldn’t, compete on those terms any more. We know that the way people spend money and time are not decreasing, but changing, and we need a plan to adapt to these changes. Nelson’s city centre needs to develop into the place where people decide to go for something

Successful modern cities play to their strengths and offer the best place for social experiences and face-to-face business exchanges. Nelson’s strength is its place at the centre of the regional economy, and its brilliant public environment. That environment is already a magnet for residents, visitors, talent and business, which is

why it is the most significant business centre in the region. Historically, the city centre has had nearly four times more jobs than Richmond, despite the city centre being far smaller in area. It has a more diverse and higher paid workforce than anywhere else in the region, so there is more money to spend. Retail will continue to be an important and visible part of

the city centre but is also subject to the greatest changes. Only 20 per cent of the jobs in Nelson’ city centre are in retail. In Richmond, nearly 40 per cent of all jobs are. Our city centre can provide what other places and the internet do not – the best places to meet people and spend time, have unique experiences, great access and amenities, and good choices about where to live. This is what the future of the city centre can be. Nelson City Council is making a plan for how to invest in making our public environment even better, including green spaces, better access, and a new community hub and library. We also want to work with developers, including to create more places for inner city living. The council, along with its economic development partner agencies, is in a unique position to set goals and invest in conditions that will enable the city we want for the future.

Nelson teacher Rebecca Armstrong is about to say au revoir to Hampden Street School and bonjour to France. This week, she is leaving behind her class of six and seven-year-olds for ten weeks of French life after winning the Ministry of Education Language Immersion Award. Rebecca is heading to Jeumont, a small village of 4000 people, three hours north of Paris on the Belgium border. She will be teaching at a Catholic high school, Sainte Bernadette, and staying with two different host families during her time there - neither of which can speak any English. Rebecca says she has “always loved” the French language and has had quite the journey to get to where she is now. “After learning it for a couple of years at high school, I applied to do Transforming Practice in Language Teaching programme in 2017.” The one-year programme is

Photo: Kate Russell. funded by the Ministry of Education and helps teachers to gain internationallyrecognised language qualifications and accreditation in language teaching. After scoring 96.5 per cent in her proficiency test, she was encouraged to further study the language and attend weekly night classes. During the course, she was able to attend Stage de Noumea - a two-week French immersion experience in

New Caledonia where she was immersed in classes and cultural activities, and only French was spoken. Rebecca says she has fully embraced her Hampden Street School students in the culture too, with them doing at least one hour of French a week. “We do songs, technology, games - lots of handson stuff. They are like little sponges.” She says she is filled with “excitement, nerves and pure

terror” ahead of her trip, leaving behind her husband and two teenage children. “It’s definitely a brave move, a huge learning curve and out of my comfort zone. It has taken a lot of blood, sweat and tears to get to this stage and, of course, heaps of support from my family, friends and school.” You can follow Rebecca’s trip through her Facebook blog, '10 weeks in France’.

Nelson Matters The Government is this week further hiking fuel tax. My concern is the impact on Nelson families and businesses and that they are at the same time reducing the investment in our local roads. The extra 3.5c/litre tax comes into effect Monday 1 October and comes on top of the 11.5c/ litre hike on 1 July for the Auckland regional fuel tax. Officials warned the Government that fuel companies would impose the extra regional tax where there is the least competition. They were right and South Island communities like Nelson are paying the most.

This sharp rise in fuel taxes is despite Labour promising no new taxes during this Parliamentary term. Prime Minister Ardern argues it is a duty and not a tax. That does not wash. Tax now makes up 50% of the cost of petrol when you add the excise, GST, regional fuel tax, ACC levy and other levies. Petrol in Australia costs $1.59 a litre and the huge difference is the tax. This difference will further grow with Labour promising further hikes in 2019 and 2020. Fuel taxes have previously been increased but not as quickly or by as much. Petrol cost 91 cents a litre in 2000, increasing to

$1.77 in 2008 under the Clark Labour Government, rising 8% per year. It went from $1.77 in 2008 to $1.96 in 2017 under the Key/ English National Government, rising 1% per year. The rise from $1.96 to $2.35 under the Ardern Labour Government is a 20% increase in the first year. Families are not just hit with the extra $20 when they fill up. Fuel costs affect everything from vegetables, bread and meat, to the cost of the plumber. This is just one of many areas where the Government is imposing extra costs that will impact on the cost of living.

These hikes in road user costs mean Nelson and Tasman will be increasing our contribution from $100m to $110m a year to the National Land Transport Fund. I might accept the extra $10m a year in costs if it were being invested in our roads, but the Government is simultaneously reducing the funding for State Highway upgrades by 70%. Lee leaves Nelmac in good shape Charles Anderson The outgoing chief executive of Nelmac says the council-owned company is in the best position it has ever been, but he is looking forward to a new challenge. Lee Babe has been the head of the environmental management company for the past seven years. In that time he has overseen an increase in turnover from $14million to just under $32million and created 110 extra jobs. “A chief executive is a different sort of a role,” Lee says. “Unless you’ve done it you don’t fully realise what it requires. But it is a great opportunity for learning.” Nelmac manages everything from the region’s parks and the city’s waste water plant, to having landscape architectural and ecological projects. Lee was brought up in Nelson before getting into contracting and says the company has had a long journey in turning it into something that can compete with the best commercial organisations. “We are an environmental management company. When I ar-

happen to, but we are competitive and relevant company in our own right.” Lee says he is proud to have led

the company on its “safety journey”. “The cultural shift is big. It’s a given now. Safety is not a thing you bolt on – it’s how we work.”

He is also happy to have implemented a leadership development programme. “That’s one of the things that gets you out of bed - when you see people with good potential and talent get opportunities.” However, there have been some lowlights. There have been some serious harm incidents at Nelmac and Lee says the industry as a whole is in some difficulty. “There has been a general decline in the contracting industry and it’s under real pressure – margins are very slim and there is a war for talent.” Lee says Nelmac is not immune to that but it has remained stable. He is moving on for a role with Smart Environmental, which has a private equity stake and is looking at growth. “I don’t want to get stale, I want to move on and learn new things.” Lee will be the company’s South Island manager. “It’s exciting times for me. But whoever gets the role next has got a great journey ahead for them. We have all the building blocks here. That’s hard to leave, but you have to.”

Woman convicted after Rocks Rd crash A woman who crashed her car on Rocks Rd last month appeared in the Nelson District Court yesterday charged with careless driving and driving with excess blood alcohol. Kelly McGuire was driving her Mini early in the hours of August 21, in poor weather conditions, when she collided with the back of a parked car on Rocks Rd. Representing herself in court, she says the incident has made her realise she has an issue with alcohol. “I made a very bad choice that night to hop in a car knowing that I had had too much to drink, I am just pleased that I didn’t hurt anyone.” She was transported to Nelson Hospital with a foot injury, where she had a blood sample taken which returned a reading of 151mlg/100ml of blood. The legal limit is 80mlg. She says she’s lost “quite a bit” due to the accident, including her car which insurance won’t cover. Judge Richard Russell convicted her and sentenced her to 80 hours of community service and disqualified her from driving for six months. She was also fined $200 and ordered to pay court costs of $130.

MAN FACES JAIL TIME: A man is facing possible jail time after being convicted of driving while disqualified, for at least the third time, and careless driving, in the Nelson District Court yesterday. Marcus Clements was convicted for two separate incidents. In the first incident he was driving on QEII Drive when he slowed down on the highway, pulled over and proceeded to drive across the reserve chasing a woman who was on foot. Clements parked the car after the woman hid from him in the bushes and when police arrived he claimed the woman was driving, not him. The second incident occurred on August 2 when he was driving along Waimea Rd in heavy traffic around 5.30pm. He reached down to plug his phone into the charger and did not notice the traffic in front of him had stopped. He collided with the rear of a vehicle while doing between 4050km/hr, causing a domino effect with the three cars in front of him. Judge Richard Russell convicted Clements and remanded him on bail for sentencing on October 29.

Parents across the region are currently united in making a tough decision that could shape the path of their children’s’ future education. Deadlines for enrolments in schools for all ages are either fast approaching or just passed. However, the process can leave many scratching their heads over the best choice for their child. Parent Tracey Blackley says that she talked to a lot of people, who all had different experiences with different schools, before making a decision for her daughter Isla’s intermediate schooling. “At the end of the day I think it's what you make it, as long as you motivate your kids, they'll be fine. It's only two years.” Nelson Intermediate deputy principal Simon Patel says we are lucky to have such a great choice of schools in Nelson. “Ultimately, students need to be comfortable in their place of learning, surrounded by sup-

choice for her daughter Ciara. “After visiting the school and receiving the parent information sent home, we knew we had made the right choice. “The school offers so many things that Ciara is interested in.”

Broadgreen Intermediate principal Peter Mitchener says the two intermediate years are such a critical time of pre-adolescence when many lifetime beliefs and hobbies can be formed. “Since I have started at Broad-

green I have been really appreciative and impressed with the collegiality and support I get from the other local intermediate schools and we definitely don’t go out to recruit enrolments. It's more about sharing the process and opportunities in the next stage of their schooling.” As far as secondary schools go, Nelson College headmaster Gary O’Shea believes that between the ages of 12 and 15 girls and boys learn very differently. He says girls are generally more mature and articulate, meaning boys can be too fearful of giving a wrong answer to contribute in class and that having your child in a single-sex school during these key years can make for a calmer and more focussed learning environment. “Boys will often put each other down, in particular if girls are around. "The posturing, the ‘I can be the bad kid, the clown in the classroom’ to try to impress, all of those immature behaviours of boys are reduced in a single sex school.”

Estella crowned rockquest champion Sara Hollyman Nelson singer/guitarist Estella Romagnoli has smoked the competition, coming away with first place at this year's Smokefreerockquest finals. The Nelson College for Girls student sung her heart out on Saturday night in Auckland against two other soloists in the solo-duo category, to claim first prize. She also won the Lowdown Best Song Award. The judges all agreed that Estella was a standout performer, in spite of being up against electronical-

ly-assisted competitors. Estella said she was feeling "pretty great" and is looking forward to what the future will hold after competing against such quality artists. "The competition was amazing, I felt pretty sick from the nerves while I was watching the other solo artists but the whole night was pretty amazing.” Judge Anji Sami said she loved everything about Estella’s performance. "The way she paired vocals and guitar, the conviction of her delivery and the strength of her songs – she had it all."

She says her mum has suggested getting a new electric guitar which she says is a "pretty good idea", but says there’s something else she has her eye on. "I really want to get into doing some performances in Nelson, it’s what I love, so I think I might get a PA system to help me get going with that." Estella also gets to record two songs as winner of the best song award, which she says is "extremely exciting". A total of $22,000 worth of equipment was won by the top bands and solo/duos.

When Evan Barnes went to work after one of the biggest storms in recent memory he had know idea what would await him. The day after the remnants of Cyclone Gita came to the region was a time of recovery. Evan works as a linesman and was out that day in Brooklyn, in Tasman, trying to restore power to people in the small community. But he also works as a photographer so took his Evan Barnes. gear with him and ended up documenting some of the most powerful images of the aftermath. “It was just people trying to deal with the devastation,” Evan says. “You could see some were just distraught.” Evan says the sheer magnitude of the storm was overwhelming. People in Brooklyn had literally faced walls of mud coming at them and surging through their homes.

"It’s a nice friendly happy day and we have a beautiful day for it.” Margaret first joined the committee in the 1980s. "I had a friend who started the Alzheimer’s Society, her mother had it and when she moved here she wanted to join a group but there wasn’t one.” Nelson mayor Rachel Reese says it was a stunning day to be in Stoke acknowledging the sufferers and their supporters. "There will not be a family in Nelson who has not been touched by Alzheimer’s we all have friends and family members who are working their way through life with Alzheimer’s.” Alzheimer’s New Zealand has

projected rates of dementia, which were growing, to hit 2.9per cent of the population by 2050. Around 70,000 Kiwis are currently living with dementia today and that’s expected to be over 170,000 by 2050. Rachel says the key to fighting it is a caring community. "That is one that is an inclusive community, a caring community is one where everyone has the opportunity to age in a place surrounded by the things that they know, that makes a huge difference.” She says that the community is in debt to the Nelson Alzheimer’s Society for for everything they do. "The amazing support that this foundation does for families in our community, they are just such wonderful people.”

Fringe Festival and then decided on a whim that they liked it so much that they might just stay. So now that show “Ballista” has been honed and is being put on this Saturday and Sunday at Ghost Light Theatre. “What we did is took all the ideas we liked the most and built on them and gave it some time to breathe. We created the show that we really wanted to make.” That show is actually a dramatized version of how Paul and Deryn met. But in this version Paul becomes Pablo Puzzlario - a streetwise juggler, grifting his living off the busy boulevards of the big city. “Plying his patter and turning his tricks for one coin at a time,

Paul Klaassen and Deryn French walked into a juggling club. That was seven years ago and now the duo has been creating professional circus shows together ever since. Deryn is originally from Nelson but they met in Auckland and fell for each other over their mutual love of performing. “We had this busy life in Auckland and we wanted a bit of space to create our shows,” says Paul. The pair thrive of creating exciting circus shows for all the family while building a real story around them. They did a huge summer tour last year and ended up at the Nelson

Arts fest brings local talent together ARTS Madagascar at Theatre Royal: The Nelson Youth Theatre Company are bringing Madagascar to the Theatre Royal stage, just in time for the school holidays. Running from 30 September until 5 October, the family-friendly production is based on the smash animated motion picture and follows a group of animals who escape from their home in New York’s Central Park Zoo. Women’s rugby gets All Blacks boost

The All Blacks’ visit to Nelson has meant that more than $25,000 will be invested into women’s rugby in the region. Local businessman Shane Drummond, who was influential in bringing the team to Nelson, hosted a luncheon featuring guest speaker Steve Hansen to raise money for the women’s game. The All Blacks coach proved a massive drawcard too, with more than $25,450 being raised to go towards development. “The value of getting him along was immense. People really enjoyed the occasion and rubbing shoulders with business people doing important things,” Shane says. Shane says he hopes the fundraiser can be an annual event moving forward. Tasman Rugby Union chief executive Tony Lewis says, as dust settles following the historic inaugural All Blacks test,

He says while the union may not have financially benefitted, the community will. “We didn’t make a dollar off it, but we wanted to grow the game. Shane’s lunch to raise money for women’s rugby is a legacy that we will use around developing the community aspect of the female game.” Tony says the state of the wo-

mens game in Nelson is strong. “Having six senior teams is fantastic compared to other regions and we have a very strong secondary school group led by Motueka High, it is on the rise.” He says there are a number of challenges facing the grassroots game but donations such as Shane’s will go a long way to overcoming them. “We have huge travel costs as

we are at the Top of the South and the cost to go anywhere is huge, it all helps and in turn helps the women’s game. Our place is to grow the game and give the girls the opportunity to play at the next level.” The Tasman Mako women’s side made its 2018 Trafalgar Park debut on Sunday, beaten heavily by a ruthless Wellington side 88-3. However, Shane says it is about building the foundation of a successful side. “We are in the development mode to compete at that top level no differently than the men’s team. We just need to not get too carried away with results.” Shane says the region has produced some fantastic female footy players, however, with the region’s limited resources, they are usually poached quickly. “While they don’t usually hang around and it upsets the makeup of the Mako, it is something we should embrace.”

SportS RUGBY: The Tasman Mako women’s side has suffered another heavy loss, going down 88-3 to Wellington at Trafalgar Park on Sunday. The stronger, bigger, faster Pride side ran in 14 tries in a dominant display. Hayley Hutana kicked Tasman’s solitary points, but the Mako were completely outmuscled at the breakdown and in contact. Some sharp interplay saw Wellington begin to run riot late in the first, a stunning offload from captain and Black Fern Joanah Ngan-Woo giving her side a first half bonus point. Fullback Crystal Mayers defended bravely and shone for a Tasman side blown off the park. Next up for the Mako is Hawkes Bay in Napier on Sunday, kick off 12pm. HOCKEY: The Tasman Tigers women’s hockey side came up agonisingly short of first place at the national senior tournament in Wellington on Saturday. In the final they came up against a very competitive North Harbour team, both sides carrying unbeaten records into the decider. The match was tense, with both goalies making some crucial saves, while the second half saw play see-saw both ways with neither side able to make the crucial break though. Consequently, the game ended 0-0 and progressed to a penalty shootout which North Harbour claimed 3-1. Completing a satisfying week for Tasman, the men’s team wound up fourth overall, losing 2-1 to Waikato on Saturday in the third and fourth play-off.

His team may have banked 14 out of a maximum of 15 points from their so-called “Storm Week”, but Tasman Mako coach Leon MacDonald was not exactly jumping for joy after Sunday’s 21-19 win over Counties Manukau. Wins over Taranaki, Manawatu and the Steelers across a nine-day span mean the Mako are sitting pretty near the top of the Mitre 10 Cup table, on track to book a semi-final spot and maybe a home play-off at that. However, MacDonald was less than chuffed with his side’s performance at Trafalgar Park, despite them eking out a win in a classic “game of two halves”. The first spell belonged to the Mako, their ability to create space wide with pace and vision matched only by their inability to make the final passes count. The second half saw a Steelers’ revival, which ended just short of a remarkable turnaround victory. “We are happy with the [competition] points,” said MacDonald, “but not the performance … we are certainly disappointed with how we finished the game.” He was quick to dismiss lethargy from such a gruelling schedule as a factor in their sloppy effort. “If we had executed better in the first half they would have been out of the game, but we left them close enough to have a sniff … I

don’t know how many opportunities we blew … but there were plenty, and we left it for a fight and, unfortunately, it was really ugly in the end. “We played everything we had planned to do really well – other than put the ball down over the line. “That’s just skill execution and pretty frustrating for all of us … we set quite high standards, especially around our skills … so when it doesn’t happen the way you expect it to, that’s very disappointing.” An early injury to reliable lineout king Pari Pari Parkinson was a blow and, coupled with the loss of flanker Sione Havili with a potential season-ending injury during the warm-ups and a head knock to fellow loosie Jed Brown, meant the Mako had to dig deep into their forward reserves, but they all stood up. Quinten Strange was enormous. He suffered a rib injury during the second spell but soldiered on, organizing the reshuffled lineouts and carrying hard. Veteran Wyatt Crockett, described by MacDonald as “evergreen”, added energy and complemented his core skills with some strong support play and a vital try. David Havili, back in the midfield, had a busy day, defending, carrying and organizing like the experienced international player

Debutant Willy Havili says they were disappointed to allow the Steelers back in the game. "Pretty happy to get the win, I didn't think it would be that close when I came on." Nelson blind bowler Gordon Oldfield may have lost his vision, but his competitive spirit is still clear to see. Gordon was one of dozens of visually-impaired players taking part in a blind bowls ‘have a go day’ at the Tahunanui Bowls Club on Saturday. Gordon was on hand to give a demonstration as an experienced blind bowler at a national level. “We play with a director who does what our eyes can’t, and we do the rest.” Blind bowls is the most widely played sport among visually impaired people, with about 5000 players internationally. Gordon has presumed ocular histoplasmosis syndrome, a degenerative retina condition, which began to take hold in his late thirties. A naturally competitive person, despite losing his vision his desire to play sport was still strong. “It’s difficult to find something where you can be competitive against not only other blind players but also sighted players, this is one that allows that.” He says you can play from a completely social level right up to international. “It also gives you that opportunity of total integration with sighted players, we can play the same sport and quite often they are surprised when the blind player actually beats them.”

Gordon began his playing career 20 years ago in South Africa. After emigrating to Nelson he saw there wasn’t much happening in blind bowls, so last year made a really concerted effort to get the sport going. Gordon also attended nationals in Mt Maunganui in November last year. “I enjoyed everything about it, just a great experience.” Gordon’s brother-in-law Roydon James helps guides him as to the set up on the green. “He has a lifetime of experience as he started playing in his late teens, but sometimes think there are times that he just wants to take the bowl out of my hand and play it himself,” Gordon says. Gordon says, no matter what level of impairment, there will be a place for you on the green. “Give it a go, you’ll be surprised at how good you are, don’t let anything hold you back, the bowling community is very accommodating.” Canterbury Blind Bowls coordinator Kevin Smith made the trip from Christchurch for Saturday’s event to promote the game as a fun time for visually-impaired people. “I have played for 45 years and had a lot of enjoyment out of it, if I can help others get some pleasure from the sport then that is fine by me.” Kevin says he has worked with some incredibly special people. “They are heroes, to play a sighted person when you are blind is incredibly brave.”

Following a five-year absence, the Nelson men’s netball team made a stunning return to club nationals earlier this month. Due to a lack of player numbers and finances, Nelson was forced to amalgamate with Marlborough in 2013 to create a Tasman side to represent the region. However, thanks in large part to the efforts of team captain Jared Lock, Nelson made its comeback in style, finishing second in the B grade at the Wellington tournament. “It was a great result, we are really happy with second,” Jared says. Nelson’s dream run ended in the final where they were pipped by one goal. The team played eight pool games across three days in what Jared says was the toughest tournament he has attended. Nelson lost two games, both by a solitary goal, to qualify second for the play offs. After registering an easy win in its quarter-final, Nelson knocked over Dunedin by six goals to set up the showdown with Southland.

Photo: Jonty Dine. “It was really close the whole game, but they just beat us unfortunately, we were down by about three most of that last quarter so did well to bring it back to one.” Jared has attended all but one club nationals in the past decade and says this year took a toll on the body. “Three games a day slammed us.” Having previously represented Canterbury, Southland and Tasman, Jared says it was awesome to don the blue bib again. “To get Nelson back on the national scene was great.” With the youngest player just 16 and the oldest 35, there was a range of experience within

the squad. Jared says the rookies played well above themselves. “We had five of the ten who had never been to nationals before, basically our whole defensive unit was new, and they were just unbelievable.” Jared was the driving force behind the Thursday night men’s netball league at Saxton Stadium. He encourages men in the region to get on the court. “Give it a go, Nelson now has the twilight league which is social and fun.” Jared says any men wanting to play netball can contact him on 027 345 5291.

Due to a new graded format being trialled, matches were more evenly contested, allowing for more challenging games at all levels. Play commenced on Friday with doubles, followed by singles on Saturday and Sunday. The eight and under grade was well represented with a mix of girls and boys.
