Nelson Tasman Hospice volunteers celebrated

Their generosity and compassion make a huge difference to patients and families. Volunteers give an average of four hours each week to their roles with Hospice. A variety of roles provide anything from emotional support for patients, to assisting with administrative tasks and fundraising.

Volunteer contributions are invaluable and make it possible for the service to reach its potential. More dedicated volunteers are needed to fill a variety of roles and they can align your commitment with your personal schedules and interests. Brian ‘The Sheriff’ Gilbert - poems digging below the surface A better yarn was never had than that over the bar at the Cardrona Hotel in Central Otago.

Proprietor Brian Gilbert could spin with the best of them, including Kiwi icon and legend, Barry Crump.

Barry was a regular at the Cardrona and Brian soon became a good mate – and he has Barry’s old hat to prove it.

Brian’s six years at the Cardrona gave him time and space to indulge his love of poetry. Pen to page was his thing. He spouted of few of them to his mates from time to time but never much in the public arena.

“Nah,” says Brian.

“I was never one for public speaking and the like. But I loved writing, both poems and yarns. That’s how come Crump gave me his hat. The deal was, I could have the hat provided I wrote my own book. That was 29 years ago!”

Well the book hasn’t been written yet but Brain “The Sheriff” Gilbert has a wealth of poems under his belt and he will be stepping out of the shadows later this month to perform as the featured guest at Golden Bay Live Poets Society gathering at the Mussel Inn. His set will be preceded by the fabulous and long-running open mic session for poets and singers and storytellers.

another of the ‘Cardrona’ friends, has captured the rough exterior of this good Kiwi bloke in an engaging portrait that hangs proudly on the wall of his home in Ferntown. But beneath that surface, there is a depth of writing talent that showcases an understanding of the human condition and every-day emotion that, Brian admits, is not often shared outside of a tall glass.

“Actually getting “The Sheriff” on stage has been a challenge,” says Mark Raffills, spokesperson for Golden Bay Live Poets. “But we are going to be in for a walloping good time.

“Brian’s delivery is calm, paced and quietly confident. His phrasing digs out all the shades and hues of the words and you find yourself ‘leaning in’ to capture every morsel of his poems.”

years ago. His Jade carving is exhibited in his Drift n Jade Gallery in Collingwood. And that long-promised book? Well, it may be a step closer after this, Brian’s first public performance of his poems.

Steiner kindergarten build underway

Child-proof fences have gone up and a construction crew is hard at work laying concrete and piles for a new kindergarten at the Steiner School on Robinson Road.

A sense of excitement surrounds the site in these early days. School children stop and watch the machines at work, moving huge mounds of earth to make way for concrete and wood posts. The loud rumbles and bangs can

be heard across the school grounds.

Motueka Rudolf Steiner Trust Chair Zoe Dryden said she was excited to see the kindergarten build underway and the transition of the kindergarten to a farmbased campus. “It’s an incredible location for our kids and the move strengthens our vision for supporting the child’s development from the early childhood through to preparing them for high

school in a seamless transition. Our tamariki love this location and we look forward to welcoming more children to this creative educational environment as our capacity expands with this move.”

Work started at the end of May on the 40-child kindergarten. On June 2, a ceremonial stone was blessed and laid in the ground while teachers and parents sang a song and expressed a vision and hope for

the new kindergarten.

The first concrete was poured while families and teachers looked on.

The original Steiner Kindergarten is operating on Wallace Street, near the library, and will move to the new site at the beginning of 2024. The two properties on Wallace Street that make up the kindergarten and a craft room will be put on the market, and the proceeds used to fund the new building. The

kindergarten has been in operation at the Wallace Street site for more than 30 years.

The move to Robinson Road will create a farm campus for the school and kindergarten, which will welcome children from the age of three to 12 years old. Coman Construction is managing the build.

Motueka Community Green Party announces Steve swimming pool update Richards as candidate for West-Coast Tasman

Well-known among locals as owner of Jester House café, Steve Richards is this year’s Green party candidate for WestCoast Tasman.

Tasman local Steve Richards has been selected to represent the Green Party at this year’s General Election as the candidate for WestCoast Tasman.

The large geographic area of the electorate means that it is covered by three membership branches, Golden Bay, Motueka and West Coast.

“I am standing to try and accelerate government action to mitigate the worst effects of climate change and to help communities build resilience. Only a strong Green voice in parliament will

ensure urgency on this issue,” says Steve.

“Climate change is just one evident impact of humankind overstepping ecological boundaries. We are a part of nature not apart from it. We need to scale back human consumption to bring resource and energy use to a more sustainable level,” he says.

Steve is also passionate about helping create a fairer society where everyone can access warm, dry, affordable housing.

For this to be a reality for all New Zealanders he says we need to rethink how the economy serves us and how wealth can be more equitably distributed.

The Green Party policy he is most keen to see progress is a tax on capital. Without this tax, the rich will continue to shirk their share of taxpaying obligations.

“Being the Green Party candidate for West CoastTasman in the 2020 election was a huge learning opportunity and I now have the chance to use that experience to really activate the Green Party Vote in this region. I’m humbled by the trust the Party members have put in me to represent their views and the values of the Party,” says Steve.

The Motueka Community Swimming Pool Committee has spent the last few months engaging with the Tasman District Council (TDC) at all levels. The Feasibility Study undertaken last year was completed in December and will become public information once formally presented to Council. As a step on the way, the Motueka Community Board received the report during a publicly excluded session of their April meeting. They presented to the Board earlier in the meeting along with very supporting presentations from Motueka Lions and Motueka Rotary.

The Board formally requested that the Council consider allocation of funding for the development of a six lane community pool for Motueka as the priority project for Motueka. The Ward Councillors and Community Board are always supportive of the pool project.

Takaka Service Centre upgrade The Ministry of Social Development’s Work and Income Service Centre at Takaka will close for renovations for three weeks from 23 June 2023.

The interior upgrade of the building at 65B Commercial Street will provide a more welcoming space for visitors,

improved privacy for clients working with case managers, and better security for visitors and staff alike.

Clients will still be able to access services while the centre is closed via MyMSD, the Work and Income website, or by calling 0800 559 009. Service Centres in

Motueka, Richmond and Nelson City will also be open during normal business hours.

“We’ve had great feedback from clients, our people and community groups about the changes at our other sites and we’re pleased to be able to bring these improvements to Takaka.”

The Takaka Service Centre will reopen to the public at 9.30am on Wednesday, 19 July.

Penguin scientist Professor John Cockrem of Massey University drew a full house at Kimi Ora Eco Resort last week as keynote speaker for the Tasman Bay Blue Penguin Trust’s community talk about korora (little penguins).

“Tasman Bay is acknowledged as significant habitat for little penguins as is neighbouring Golden Bay,”

says Prof Cockrem.

“Encroaching residential development and consequential increase in mammalian threats such as dogs is putting pressure on little penguins’ ability to thrive. Unless we make changes and learn to live with little penguins, we are at serious risk of them becoming locally extinct.”

Local penguin rehabilitation vet, Dr Mana Stratton, also spoke about the challenges

of having increasing numbers of little penguins coming to her clinic due to dog attacks and boat strikes, as well as climate-related environmental conditions resulting in difficult foraging.

“I would rather dog owners put a lead on their dog than deal with the horrendous consequences,” says Mana.

In addition to work with community groups and advo-

cacy for korora, Prof. Cockrem also works with local councils by providing penguin management plans for coastal developments and working with construction teams to ensure that penguins are not harmed. Last week, he was at Port Tarakohe in Golden Bay working with TDC contractors involved in the port’s extension.

“Doughnuts and Degrowth Imagining a New Future”

In the first, held April 17, Dr. Mike Joy offered overwhelming evidence the world will run out of energy before reaching carbon neutrality, at current rates. Degrowth, which rejects the belief that economic growth should be pursued at all costs, was held up as a solution.

With June 7 event, former MP Gareth Hughes, now country lead of the Wellbeing Economy Alliance Aotearoa New Zealand, is talking with ordinary people about what they think about the economy. He stated that the economy is too important to leave to the economists, and that 95% of economics is common sense. Gareth noted that past economic theory has relied on a virtuous circle of improved productivity, increased exports, and accelerating growth.

This theory assumes all natural resources can be extracted cheaply to support production.

Published authors and climate activists Gareth Hughes and Jack Santa Barbara presented their views linking climate change to economic growth to a capacity crowd at Mapua Community Hall recently.

Our planet has taken the position that enough is enough; there are limits.

sity loss, and climate change. The benefits of unbounded economic growth, at historical targets of 4% yearly, do not benefit society equally.

Jack Santa Barbara laid out changes needed to reverse the effects of economic growth. A goal of degrowth is to reduce extraction, production and consumption to a level our planet can carry. Another is to support the vulnerable through inevitable consequences as the economy adjusts. A third goal is to change our economic sys-

tems to preserve a stable steady state.

Jack proposed that governments use indices of well-being to measure of societal heath, not economic growth. He supported minimum income guarantees for individuals, and income limits to discourage concentration of wealth beyond what anyone needs or can spend. He called for taxes on natural resource extraction and labour to fund support programs for society. Citizens can take a role by building resilient communi-

ties, and importantly, through their spending choices. Basic needs must be met in food, water and shelter.

Big blue and brand new impresses pre-schoolers

Lately Oasis Education preschool have been interested/ hiahia in transport, every time a truck pulls up outside or a rubbish truck comes to collect its lunch/kai ( at least that’s what teachers are told is happening), the majority of children rush over to the front window and the discussions start. Children/tamariki have even asked for a schematic drawing of a rubbish truck and the road sweeper picking up the leaves to see

how they worked.

With the pedal tractor and car out the back-yard always a favourite. A visit from a little tractor so the children can see it and touch it, even sit in the seat would be an amazing opportunity to develop theories and extend vocabulary and share their knowledge with friends.

Thanks to Motueka Farm Machinery this was able to happen and they had BIG BLUE at school to look touch and climb over.

This generated around two hours of non-stop discussions & exploration. Some children already knew plenty about tractors.

The amazing community that Oasis Education preschool are part of allows them to offer real life experiences with the specialised age group of over 3 – school age. It allows children to collect their knowledge and share but also add to it with discussions with their friends.

Football: The game where every- Motueka one knows the rules! But do we? Bridge Club

Football is a sport where two teams of 11 players compete to outscore each other while following the 17 laws of football. Both Football and Rugby have Laws governing the game (instead of rules) as the original laws, for both these games, were created by lawyers. Football can be played on either grass or artificial turf, but the surface must be green in colour. The field must be rectangular in shape, marked by two short goal lines and two long touch lines. The field must be divided into two equal halves by a line that runs parallel to the goal line. This line serves as a centre, and in senior football a circle of 9.15m diameter is drawn evenly over it. This is the first law.

The second law specifies the shape, size, and makeup of the ball while laws 3 and 4 pertain to the players and their equipment. Law 5 and 6 denote the Referee and match officials, with duration of the match covered in law 7. It is not until law 8 that the laws cover the game, starting with the start (kick off)

and restart (second half kick-off). One of the most controversial laws is number 9, whether the ball is in or out of play. This law states that the ball is in play from the start of each playing period with a kick-off and is still in play unless it leaves the field of play, or the referee stops the game. The ball must cross the line completely or it is considered still in play.

This is regardless of if it is on the ground or in the air. The player can step off the pitch as it is the ball position that regulates the game play. The outcome of a match is determined by law 10, while law 11 covers another highly controversial match day dispute: the offside law.

There are two instances when an attacking player is allowed to be offside.

These are when taking a corner and a throw in. It is not an offence to be in an offside position, until the ball is played by the offside player, ‘becoming involved in active play’. The offside law states that ‘a player is in an offside position if any of their body parts (except the hands and

arms), are in the opponent’s half of the pitch, closer to the opponents goal line than both the ball and the second-to-last opponent’. Remembering that the last opponent is usually (but also not necessarily) the keeper. The best way to determine whether a player is offside is to have linesmen running the touch lines.

The laws 12,13 and 14 pertain to Misconducts and the disciplinary consequences within the game.

Throw-ins, goal kicks and corner kicks are covered by the last 3 laws. These are intended to guide the decision making of which team gains possession of the ball, if the entire ball crosses the touch line or goal line, but not in the goal box.
