Trolley derby a winner

Not one dollar donated by Nelsonians to a man collecting for bowel cancer research is expected to make its way to the intended cause, but to an alleged Australian charity scam instead. The Cancer Research Charitable Trust is currently collecting in Nelson, its financial records show it raised a little over $111,000 for the year ending 2011 and spent it all on wages and expenses with not one dollar being donated to a single charity. The trust is registered with the Charities Commission but an 0800 number on its invoices does not exist, nor does its website. The listed officer of the charity, Troy Manhire, has been the target of police investigations in

Australia and is currently under investigation by the Department of Internal Affairs here. Door-knockers for the trust earn up to 40 per cent of the money they collect, a practice deemed to be “unprofessional” by the Fundraising Institute of New Zealand. “No professional fundraising institute in the world condones relating fundraising fees to the amount raised,” says FINZ CEO James Austin. In 2009 Mr Manhire was investigated for fraud in South Australia

“I’d like to think 100 per cent but I know it’s not. I think it should all go definitely.”

“It is one thing to look for when donating. I would expect 80 per cent at least to go towards what I am donating to.”

“I would hope all of it. I would be devastated if it didn’t. There’s just so much greed and corruption happening.”

“I would expect the majority. People are donating to the charity not the people running it.”

Charity rips off Nelson donors FROM PAGE 1 after he pocketed a salary topping $500,000. The licence of his Cancer and Bowel Research Association – and the four trusts it worked with in that state – was stripped and only reinstated two years later and under the strict condition that Mr Manhire was not involved in its management “in any way”, according to a statement by the Office of the Liquor and Gambling Commissioner in South Australia. Mr Manhire was the CEO and chairman of that association but now bases his operation from the Gold Coast and is still allowed to operate in other Australian states and New Zealand. The other officer for his New Zealand trust is a company owned by Mr Manhire’s wife. The Cancer Research Charitable Trust is still advertising for collectors in the Auckland

area and its coordinator, Neil Armstrong, says collectors earn 25 per cent of what they raise if it’s under $500 for the week but they can earn 40 per cent of all the money they collect, if donations for the week are more than $1200. Karen Ward, the general manager for the Public Fundraising Regulatory Association, says the trust is not registered with it and their tactics break fundraising regulations and are “disturbing”. “Never should a door-to-door collector ask for cash for one, they should also wear branded clothing and a name badge.” The man currently operating in Nelson told the Nelson Weekly he’s based in Australia but flies to the South Island each year and collects in its major centres, as well as Wellington. He says all the money that is leftover after “expenses” is given to New Zealand charities.

A further look at its financial records, listed on the Charity Commission website, shows its last donation to any charity was for $20,472 in the year ending 2010. That year the trust collected $239,055 from Kiwis. The year before it raised $343,599 and didn’t make one donation, meaning that in its last three annual financial statements the trust collected a total of $694,449 and only donated $20,472, according to those figures. Nelson fundraising expert and member of FINZ, Judene Edgar says that the charitable sector is open to rort as it is relying on the good nature and generosity of people. “What this sort of shameful scam does is make people distrust reputable charities and genuine people and worthwhile causes can miss out as a consequence. If you are at all suspicious or have not heard of a charity before, don’t donate,” she warns.

Trolley derby a winner again

Sinead Ogilvie Reporter

reporter@nelsonweekly.co.nz

FrEE pArking bAck: Free car parking in Nelson’s CBD on Tuesdays will be offered again this winter. Nelson City Council voted last week to continue the offer, now in its third year. This year it will run from July 2 until September 3, a total of nine weeks. Although there will be no charge at the meters, time limits still apply.

You won’t find a better example of classic kiwi ingenuity than at the trolley derby and spectators who packed out Nelson’s Collingwood St weren’t disappointed, with everything from golf carts to bikes and even prams whizzing past them at high speeds. The annual Robertson’s Trolley Derby attracted more than 2500 people who wanted to be a part of what has quickly become a world famous in New Zeland event. President of the Nelson Trolley Club, Tim Bayley says the event ran very smoothly and he was pleased with it’s success. “It was fabulous and I want to say thanks to everyone for such a great day, in particular the residents of Collingwood St, they are amazing for letting us use their street.”

roAD SAFETY DEMoS: Road safety demonstrations complete with fast cars, cut out figures and fake blood are being held in local neighbourhoods across Nelson city this week to help slow drivers down. Supported by Nelson City Council, these demonstrations will also bring home to drivers the consequences of speed in built up areas and to children the dangers of stepping out in front of a moving vehicle. The demonstrations are at various streets in the region. Visit www.nelsoncitycouncil.co.nz for more information. WAlk For WATEr: A 15 kilometre fun run, where participants can either walk, run or bike, will begin at the ASB Aquatic Centre in Richmond and go along the new Great Taste Cycle Trail through to Rabbit Island this Sunday. The event starts at 9am and is a fundraiser for the water for prosperity charity. Free buses will be provided to get back to the aquatic centre.

Father and son duo Jason and Craig Nicholas of Stoke.

DEAL of the week

Brent Woolf of Stoke crosses the finish line during a heat of the Robinson’s Collingwood St Trolley Derby on Saturday. Photos: Sinead Ogilvie. With 80 entries into the zoomers, sprinters, nippers and rockets categories, the event was almost at full capacity, with keen racers turning out to take a chance at a top spot after a year of preparation says Tim. “Some people spend a year working on their trolleys getting ready for the derby. In the weeks leading up to race day recycle centres are bare, picked over for bike tyres, wheels or anything that is round and moves.” It’s not just about hurtling down a hill at high speed either. Local father Craig Nicholas says half the fun was working on a project with his son, Jason, 12, who

competed in the sprinter’s class with his ‘road runner’ inspired trolley. The duo spent half a year building the trolley out of plywood in their garage to get it up to scratch to race in this year’s derby and Craig says discovering his son was full of ideas was a great lesson to learn.“It’s great to spend time with your boy out in the garage and it’s suprising to hear what they have to say.” Jason Kroupa says after watching the Kiwi Flyer movie three weeks ago he brought his family down to watch the antics unfold. “It’s been fantastic to watch, we’ve had a great time.”

Baby photo started online business

TUESDAY 19 March 2013

National Autumn Rose Show manager Kelvin Banks holds one of the winning exhibits from the weekend, entered by Letty Thawley of Upper Moutere. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Natalie Akoorie When Katie Coursey uploaded a photo to Facebook of her baby son wearing a homemade punk outfit, she had no idea it would lead to a successful business which earns her more than a fulltime job. The 31-year-old Nelson mother of two started Punk Baby Clothing in 2009 after friends began asking if she could make them some of the skull-and-crossbones-inspired clothes Jem, now almost 4, was wearing. Katie set up a business page on Facebook and the niche brand was born. Now clothing sales amount to $60,000 a year, she has 7600 “likes” – translation: a huge following of fans – and last year quit her job as a jewellery designer to concentrate on the business. “It’s pretty amazing. Sometimes I have to think, ‘Whoa, what the hell has happened?”’ She sends off up to 50 packages of clothing each week and is now at the threshold where she must register to pay GST for the business. She already pays income tax. In December Katie hired a seamstress to help sew all the clothes she creates in her kitchen, orders for which come from across New Zealand, Australia and even as far afield as Canada and England. When Punk Baby Clothing began, Katie tried selling the clothes on Trade Me but sales were slow until she switched back to Facebook and began marketing the site. She set up a website but says 98 per

Jem Coursey models his mother Katie’s range of baby clothes. Photo: Sarah Ryland cent of orders still come through Facebook, where a business page is free and interactive. Using social media Katie has collaborated with other sellers to attract more followers. However she says Facebook was fickle. “They make changes all the time. I don’t put all my faith in Facebook although it’s been really good to me, anything could happen because it’s a free service.” Her advice for other would-be Facebook entrepreneurs is to “stick with something you know”. “Go with what you like and don’t try to ride on anyone else’s coattails.” Employers and Manufacturers Association spokesman Gilbert Peterson says that people who used social media to garner business were “innovative and creative”. However, the disadvantages included negative comments being posted on your site. “You could open yourself to some attack from a competitor.” He says the businesses were mostly small, one-person operations and a good way for people to “get started” before establishing a website.

Rosey weekend for Stoke flower show Difficult growing conditions throughout the past month has resulted in no Nelson growers being amongst the top awards at the National Autumn Rose Show held at the Stoke Memorial Hall over the weekend, although the events

manager says the turnout was strong. Kelvin Banks praised the number of event-goers but believed local gardeners were unable to match the quality of those from the North Island. “Considering the weather we’ve

had the roses are beautiful,” he says. Despite missing out on the major awards, a number of local gardeners picked up wins in the sectional awards, of which there were nearly 50 different categories.

Pipe nationals Men’s shed trail a success to inject $1.8M into Nelson Sinead Ogilvie Pipe band fans are in for a treat with over 2000 bagpipers, drummers and their supporters set to descend upon Nelson for two days of contesting in early 2015. The local Celtic Pipe Band based in Stoke secured the right to host the event early this month and pipe major Bryce Gilchrist says the band couldn't be more excited to begin planning for what he describes as "the major event on every pipe band's calender". He says over 50 bands will attend the event, travelling from all over New Zealand, with some even heading over from Australia for the contest. "This is a huge event that the Celtic Pipe Band is extremely excited about. We are a band full of young

people and have been doing extremely well on the competition front. Hosting the 2015 nationals will give us a great focus." He says the event will bring in an estimated $1.8 million to the local economy and it is well known for attracting a high number of spectators. "The bands will be putting out their best performances and it will absoloutely be a weekend of entertainment for the community." The event will be held on March 13 and 14 2015 at Trafalgar Park and the Trafalgar Centre. The Celtic Pipe Band also extend an invitation to all ex band members who would like the opportunity to play in the street march event with the current band members during the 2015 nationals to get in contact.

A fundraising tour inside garages owned by local collectors and hobbyists has been deemed a success and will go ahead next year, say its organisers. The Life Education Trust’s Blokes in Sheds trail stopped off at ten different locations across the region, showcasing everything from model railways to teapot collections. Murray Campbell, who owns the model railway, was happy to open his shed for the fundraiser, especially due to the fact it was relatively unknown to those outside of the local model railway group. “People are loving it, the kids especially. It’s the most creative hobby there is. You start with carpentry, followed by track laying which involves electric wiring and then the scenery and then the paintings,” he says. Murray brought the railway with him when he moved down from Auckland 19 years ago and modelled part of it on the trip from Springfield to Arthur’s Pass. The feedback from those attending the event was positive. Gregory Wood says his favourite was the Humphries brothers vehicle, bike and truck collection on Quarantine Rd. “I think it’s a fine Kiwi example of hiding in the man cave,” he says. “The enthusiasm and passion that people have for their hobbies is incredible. The craftsmanship is wonderful.” Organiser Marg Palmer was happy with the event. “We raised $750, which was $750 we didn’t have before the weekend. The feedback from everyone was great and I’d like to thank the shed owners for supporting this event.”

If you can afford to extend the cover to full insurance or 3rd party, fire and theft, you will be covered for most eventualities. New station for Hira Nelson’s sole rural fire force is now in its newly-built $235,000 station. The Hira Volunteer Rural Fire Force station was officially opened last weekend after Nelson City Council stumped up the money to build the new facility which will allow the force more room to train, store gear and relax after fighting fires.

Councillor Gail Collingwood opens the Hira fire station with a future volunteer. Photos: Nelson City Council.

The Hira station is the main port of call for all rural fires in Nelson North and has recently fought fires at Cable Bay and Atawhai. It also attends a lot of car crashes in the region and is the only rural fire force in the Nelson City Council region, with eight in the Tasman district. Principal rural fire officer for the Waimea Rural Fire Authority, Ian Reade, says the

new building is great news for the region. “It’s a nicer environment to operate out of, gives them some more space and room for future growth. It’s a great community asset, it’s terrific actually.” The station was opened by Nelson City councillor Gail Collingwood and Ian says the force is looking for more volunteers. If anyone is keen they can call 544 2441.

Library clears its shelves of car books

A collection of car and motorcycle books is up for grabs, with the library selling more than 80 books, its entire collection. The Friends of the Library hold sales of cancelled books on the first Saturday of each month at the Elma Turner Library from 10am12.30pm. But the next one on April 6 will feature books and manuals of mainly older types of cars, ranging from the 1960s through to the mid-90s. They range from the tiny Citroen 2CV and Mini to Holden Commodore and 4WDS, plus motorbikes. “Being specialised books they

are of low interest to the general public. And as they don’t get borrowed often they take up a lot of space on the shelves,” says Jeannie Woodhouse from the Friends of the Nelson Library committee. “In many cases the technical information is now available electronically from a database on the Libraries’ website.” The committee is hoping that owners of the car models and car and motorbike enthusiasts may be interested in having their own copies to avoid the library throwing them out. “Especially at the bargain price of $2 each,” says Jeannie.

Rain doesn't stop dogs' day in the sun The weekend's rain did little to dampen the spirits of even the smallest of dogs, who turned out to support the Nelson SPCA regardless of the downpour. While numbers were down on previous years more than 60 dogs and their families braved the weather and took part in the inaugral Dogs Day Out held at Isel Park on Sunday. Nelson SPCA manager Donna Walzl says although the rain was disappointing, she was pleased at how many people came along. "Some people are absolutely drenched but they are still in good spirits and having fun."

WW2 vet off to pacific anniversary Sinead Ogilvie Reporter

reporter@nelsonweekly.co.nz An 88 year old world war two veteran is all set to attend the 70th anniversary commemorations for the war in the Pacific after he was presented with a set of miniature medals designed for the occasion. Local man Raymond Dunn served in the Royal New Zealand Navy during the war and will travel to New Caledonia with a group of more than 120 returned servicemen and current members of the Airforce, Navy, and Army to attend the commemorative service to be held on ANZAC day this year. Barry Pont, Nelson RSA president, presented the miniature set of medals to Raymond at the Nelson Suburban Club on Wednesday night and says the medals are exactly the same as the full set Raymond recieved straight after the war but are designed to be light weight and easier to wear. "The miniature set are usually worn on formal occasions. The full set are very heavy and can be hard to manage." He says the lightweight medals will make it easier for Raymond to manage while he is away in New Caledonia and that afterwards they can be worn by family members during Anzac commemorations. Raymond, whose medals include the 3945 Star, the Atlantic Star, the Pacific Star, the 3945 war medal and the NZ war medal, says he was pleased to be given the opprotunity to go along but wasn't sure about the fuss being made

Muddy Buddy muddier than ever

with Sinead Ogilvie

Tuesday March 12 Emails flooded into the Weekly inbox with entries to win two tickets that were up for grabs to the Blokes in Sheds trail over the weekend. The winner, as drawn from the hat, was Jan Sigley of Stoke. Congratulations. Tuesday March 12 Thousands of Nelsonians took part in Purple Cake Day fundraising activities on the global day of action two weeks ago. More than $15,000 has been raised so far and is a significant step towards the $100,000 goal which will benefit children in Haiti, Nepal and Kenya. Schools, businesses and families raised the funds through activities such as mufti days, websites and sponsored bike rides. Tuesday March 12 The Harvey Norman Fours Championship attracted 96 entrants who braved the weather on Sunday to finish off the two day tournament. The winning team was Dave Huntly and Graham Eggers of the Waahi Taakaro Golf Club and in second place Adrian Terry and Todd Moir of the Nelson Golf Club.

Morning rain was the perfect ingredient for a record breaking Muddy Buddy, with 1400 people running through Tasman School and the local estuary completely covered in muck. The annual event, first thought of by Jodie and Nathan Fa’avae, is the major fundraiser for Tasman School and this weekend it coincided with the school’s centenary. Principal Pip Wells says this was the first time it had rained during the race and while it dampened the competitors,

*OFFER VALID THURSDAY 21ST MARCH TO SATURDAY 23RD MARCH 2013 ONLY.

Tuesday March 5 After local deaf woman and NZSL tutor Rachel Summers featured in the Nelson Weekly highlighting one of New Zealand’s official languages, Nayland College have had a great response with enough people signing up for the beginners sign language community education course to continue. Tuesday February 19 The Sirens Of Smash got all the fresh meat they could wish for after an article in the Nelson Weekly saw more than 40 interested ladies sign up to give Roller Derby a go. The Fresh Meat intake began on March 11 and will see the new players train for the next few months covering everything from learning to skate to scrimmage. There are potentially still a few spots up for grabs but you’ll have to get in quick. They also had a good response regarding trainee referees and non playing officials, but would still like anyone who’s keen to get in contact via their facebook, www.facebook.com/ Sirens.of.smash

While the final fundraising tally had not been calculated, the money will go towards an aspect of physical activity, says Pip. “This year one of things we’re looking at is developing the playground further and making it more challenging for the senior students.” Students of Tasman School worked alongside the Department of Conservation and the Tasman District Council to ensure protection of the estuary and students did assignments on the effects the race has on its environment.

it certainly didn’t dampen their spirits. “The rain wasn’t unpleasant and it was still warm so it worked well with the event,” she says. “It was a hugely successful event with 1400 contestants and over 700 of those had pre-registered. We only had a 1000 people last year so it’s majorly up on that.” Because families are able to compete together in an active way, Pip says it will continue to be successful. “People love dressing up, having a bit of fun, having a laugh and getting exercise at the same time.”

Thousands expected for summer fare

The final touches are going on the Sprig & Fern Summer Fare, just days before the successful street party returns to Richmond’s Sundial Square. Those supporting, organizing and performing at Friday’s event, are ready to celebrate the conclusion of summer with one last get together featuring live music, a wide variety of gourmet food and beverage stalls and children’s entertainment. Sprig & Fern co-owner Tracey Banner, who has held the naming rights for the past few years, says she is happy to continue supporting the event because of its success. “We’re a Nelson brewery but more importantly we’re in Richmond and being in Sundial Square it’s just a stone throw away so it’s a great thing to support,” she says. “The entire community really supports it, they may have not seen

Nelson City Council parks and facilities manager Paul McArthur says a dog park is in the pipeline for all dogs and their owners and “an indiciative allocation and significant amount of time” is set to go towards a fenced dog park for Nelsonians to enjoy. While greyhounds love to run, Angela says a common misconception is that they

require too much excersise to keep as pets, when in reality they are often called “the 70km couch potato.” “While they love running, they also enjoy curling up on the couch too.” Anyone who has a property the greyhounds could use or would like to find out more about adopting a retired racing greyhound can contact Angela on 546 5045.

More than 30 rehomed and retired racing greyhounds are looking for somewhere safe to stretch their legs while they wait for a dog park earmarked by the Nelson City Council to come to fruition. While the greyhounds are no threat to other dogs or people, their love of running at high speeds has their owners looking for somewhere fenced in so they can relax while excersising their pets says Angela Wilson area coordinator for Greyhounds as Pets. While the NCC has a park planned for the next financial year, Angela says the local greyhound community is calling on anyone who may have a paddock or property that they could use in the meantime for their pets. The dogs, which can reach speeds of up to 70km have all been rehomed in the face of certain death by the nationwide organisation, which successfully finds adoptive homes for the animals after their typically young retirement. “Unfortunately it normally means they are put down, but we are successfully rehoming them to families who want a kind, gentle and affectionate family pet.”

each other for 12 months so it’s always a good chance to catch up, have a beer and a bit of a dance.” A rock covers band has been booked for live entertainment and its lead singer says the Summer Fare will be its biggest show to date. Sam Wilson of Repeat Offenders described it as “our Wembley” and says the band was really looking forward to performing at such a successful event, and one they can bring their kids along to. “We haven’t performed at anything like this and we’re quite excited about it,” says Sam. The Sprig & Fern Summer Fare is organized by Richmond Unlimited and runs from 5:30pm until 10pm. Entry is free and there are spot prizes that will be handed out throughout the night, although the medieval dress-up competition is not running this year.

Team still marching 50 years on

It took a lot of searching, but these former marching girls have proved to be the final pieces of the puzzle that Eleanor Duncan has spent the last year trying to solve. It all came together for Eleanor over the weekend, who held a reunion for the Tamerlanes, a 1950s Nelson champion marching group who had since lost touch. After an article published in the Nelson Weekly in September last year missing members were encouraged to come forward and the team managed to track down the final 29 Tamerlanes marchers to join in the celebration. Eleanor says attendees at the reunion came from near and far to be at the event, with some travelling from Auckland, Hamilton, Waikanae and Timaru as well as 17 more who were still living under the radar in the Nelson region. While she says it was a lengthy process finding contact details for the missing members, the positive reaction she received from each person when they were found was encouraging and gave her and co-organiser Ruth Parker the push they needed to see the project through. “We found people through talking to many people, someone who knew someone who knew something helped us get there. The last person on our list was only found two weeks ago and she was very pleased and surprised to be found.” The Tamerlanes spent the weekend reminiscing and while a leisure marching display was cancelled due to wet weather, Eleanor says the weekend was extremely satisfying. “It was great fun becoming reacquainted with women we knew more than 50 years ago, thank goodness for the name tags.” After a farewell coffee on Sunday, the local ex marchers vowed to get together in the future at least once a year and keep in contact with those who live elsewhere says Eleanor.

Nelson City Council The Nelson City Council has a few tips on how to keep your fire burning with good wood this winter. When it comes to wood, you need to burn it right and stack it right to get the best heating result, value for money and look after the environment. Before you throw a log on the fire this winter, make sure you clean your chimney to prevent chimney fires and make your burner run better. Get a hot fire going quickly

with plenty of paper and small kindling and make sure you are only burning seasoned and dry wood that contains less than 25% moisture. Burning wet wood is illegal, expensive, bad for your burner, and bad for your health so ask for a moisture meter check when your wood is delivered. Don’t be tempted to burn rubbish, plastics, glossy paper, treated or painted wood as these release toxic chemicals and don’t bank up the fire overnight – a slow smouldering fire creates lots of extra smoke and does not keep the room any warmer than burning the wood efficiently. What can you expect from your Good Wood Supplier? When it comes to stacking, split your • Dry seasoned firewood is available for immediate use. wood first and open stack it in a crissOR cross pattern for maximum air circu• Unseasoned or wet wood is delivered far enough in advance for it to lation. it www.justenergy.co.nz to find out more. P & M Fireplaces For 55 years P & M fireplaces has been keeping Nelsonians warm and even after all that time, heating your home with a fire is still the most energy efficient and cost effective way to keep your family and home warm and dry. Owners Murray and Bev Sinclair are your one stop fire shop, the family business made up of experts can help you with the right advice on the right fire for your home. The original owners of P & M Fireplaces Barbara Perkins and John Muddle started the business in 1956 and have since moved on, however the original name remains today well known as a reliable and trustworthy business who get the job done right. Over the years P & M fireplaces has worked to keep local Nelsonians warm and look after our environment, overhauling the business and offering new, clean air compliant products to keep Nelson’s air fresh, while still keeping the cost of heating down for local families. Murray’s family take great pride in the business, his daughter and son both work in the business with him, learning from the best and offering great customer service, from advice, installation to servicing.

P & M Fireplaces has so much historical experience that it can still get parts for your 1960’s fire, now that’s truly standing the test of time. If you need to heat your home, service your fire or simply want advice on the best and most cost effective way to heat your home call Murray and the team at P & M Fireplaces. Current Generation Going solar – what is the payback? What’s the return on using solar energy to power your home? This is one of the first questions that you ask when considering a grid-tie solar system. Solar energy is a source that will supply electricity, long term, with no continuous financial input, no environmental impact and it’s an exciting investment! A grid-tie solar system offers immediate savings on your electricity bill, a capital value increase on your property and the benefits of creating your own power for your own home in the face of the constant rise of energy costs. During the day, when your grid-tie system is creating power, you use free power, saving what you would have normally

paid to your power company and reducing your electricity bill. Any extra power you make above what you use is bought back by your electricity provider. To give you an idea on what you could save for a 3.2 kW grid-tie solar system, installed, currently costs from $11,000 and will produce, around 4,256 kWh of electricity each year. With current electricity prices of $0.27 per kWh this means direct electricity savings of $1,150.00 per year. Can you afford not to go solar? Talk to Current Generation and find out how you can save with solar energy. Can Plan One of the worst places we can dispose of garden waste is at the dump, but people filling local landfills with garden off cuts now have a safer and more environmentally friendly option when it comes to getting rid of greenery from backyard clear outs. GreenBin, a Can Plan initiative is the first regular fortnightly service of its kind for Nelson as up until now people have had to mix in their garden waste in with their general household waste or use other limited services.

Green waste is worse than plastics or other recyclables when placed in a landfill, it gives off harmful greenhouse gases that leach into the surrounding environment. Composting garden waste is the best thing we can all do to look after our environment and CAN PLAN have made it easy with their new greenBin. They’ll take it to Greenwaste to Zero for composting so your waste ends up being used to improve the environment, not harm it.

Teen crush to wedding bells There’s nothing truly romantic about a 15 year old schoolgirl falling in love with a national running champion. Tom was two years my senior and a total babe. It was your classic teenage crush, in which said schoolgirl cut pictures of her heartthrob out of the newspaper and pasted them into her deep and meaningful daily journal. “Dear Diary, one day I’m going to marry Tom Heaphy,” the young ingénue wrote. “He’s the hottest guy in town”. There’s nothing really romantic either about that 15 year old growing up into a party girl strutting her stuff down Wellington’s Cuba St, celebrating her first paycheck since graduating university. Twenty two and bulletproof, she didn’t need a man! Except that guy on the street corner looked pretty good, and slightly familiar… “Oh my god!” I whispered to my friends (and we all know that such whispers sound like someone yelling through a megaphone) “It’s Tom Heaphy!” Here was the moment my 15 year old self had dreamed of – meeting that dreamboat, Tom Heaphy. Thinking cool thoughts, I took a deep breath and minced over. “Hi, sorry, look you don’t actually know me… I went to school with you, ISTYLISH mean, that is, I went to girl’s college, haha and actually we’re not theFEATURES same age, I think you were older than me. As footsteps came crashing towards me, I thought I was about to die. But like a knight in shining leather jacket, there appeared the very man I’d had been stalking. “Oh hi!” I said brightly but suddenly feeling like quite an idiot. Now how was I going to explain myself? “Hi” he said and smiled “Umm, I didn’t get your number and I thought we could catch up for a drink sometime?” Five years on and a newlywed couple sits basking in the happy glow of their wedding day (and a bottle of champagne). But as the maid of honour walks up to the podium to begin her speech, the bride notices a very familiar looking diary and the blood rushes from her face. Uh oh. “Honey” I leaned over and mumbled to my groom. There’s something I haven’t told you. When I was 15, I used to stalk you.” Tom and Loren Heaphy are the first to share their love story as one of seven finalists in the Jens Hansen Love Stories competition. A love story from each of the finalists will run each in the Nelson Weekly in the lead up to the Nelson Wedding Show where the winner of the competition will be annoucned. Finalists combine for nationals The Stoke and Waimea Eagles have a different kind of rivalry. Straight after competing against each other in the Nelson Premier Softball grade final, the two sides have merged to contest the New Zealand men’s club championship in Christchurch. For the record Stoke got the upper hand on its inner-club rivals, winning the final 6-5. But injuries – particularly to key pitcher Brandon Peck – and the unavailability of some secondary school players, means it is vital that the club continues to run under its current format, allowing more players to come into contention for out-of-town club tournaments. Club spokesperson Derryn French explains that the merger occurred quite a few years ago when the Waimea club was struggling

for numbers. “The main advantage is when we go to club tournaments you’re only allowed a certain number of players from outside of your club. Coming from a small community, by combining them gave us a wider pool of players.” With Brandon still unable to pitch due to a shoulder injury and the usual pool of school players unavailable, Derryn says the side would have not been able to go to Christchurch this weekend if it could not select players from either team. The Stoke Eagles are ranked 18th going into the national competition, which Derryn described as “a bit harsh”. “We’re likely to place anywhere between 12th and 20th but the downside is the unavailability of a number of our quality youth.”

Tennis test for teachers Tahuna School students will take part in the Grasshoppers tennis programme this year, but it was their teachers that got the first taste of the action. The teachers underwent the training on Friday afternoon, enabling them to take lessons during physical education time, once the Nelson Bays Tennis programme finished at school. Tahuna is one of four new

schools, along with Appleby, Hira and Central Takaka, now involved in the programme that links school with tennis club and coaches. Grasshoppers in aimed at the ten year olds and under age group. Nelson Bays Tennis development officer Lynnie Nevin says there are now 22 local schools involved in the Tennis New Zealand initiative.

“It’s not technical, it’s all game based because we want to make this fun for the children to get them hooked on the sport,” she says. “Hopefully, it will get them interested in tennis and go join a local club. Nelson is one of the strongest regions for Grasshoppers because there are just so many schools on board.” Lynnie says the teachers had a blast playing on Friday.

Sam McKenzie won two gold medals at the National Age Group Championship. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Nelson teen a swim sensation Swim sensation Sam McKenzie was back in the pool and back in the record books last week, winning two national titles and breaking five regional records at the National Age Group Championships in Wellington. Sam’s medal tally included wins in the 13 year old boys’ 50m freestyle and 100m freestyle, silver in the 50m butterfly and bronze in the 200m freestyle. The two victories followed up his record breaking performance at the Waimea College swimming sports last month, where he broke seven records in all seven events he competed in. Nelson Swimming Club coach Andy Adair has only been in the region for a short time so could not answer whether Sam was the best swimmer the area has seen in the past 20 years, but did say he has the potential to push on and become one of the greatest. “Every so often someone walks in the door of your programme who is a very natural swimmer. In this case I’m lucky enough to walk through the door of the programme,” he says. “For some reason this person has a better grip on the water than all of the

other kids, for some reason he has got a better natural stroke shape than all of the other kids and he can move his limbs quickly. He is amongst the best 13 year old swimmers I’ve seen in my 20 year coaching career.” But Andy says he is not interested in Sam’s current talent as he wants him to be a good 23 year old, not a good 13 year old, although an encouraging sign was his improvements over the longer distances. Last year he won gold in the 12 year old boys’ 50m freestyle at the same championship and Andy says strong results in the 200m and a huge personal best in the 400m would bode well for the future as he looks to transition to the longer events like the 400m individual medley. “In my opinion that is the most significant thing. He went into the 200m free with a time of 2 minutes 13 seconds and went 2 minutes and 6 seconds in the race. Instead of just being a gifted kid who is fast over 50m, he is now a gifted kid over 50m and 100m and making very strong improvements in 200m and 400m – adding work to his talent.”

Health scare ends champ's run of titles A health scare has dashed Alex Jordan’s hopes of winning the 400m title for the third year in a row at this weekend’s New Zealand Track and Field Championship. The 20 year old Massey University student will only enter the 4x100m relay alongside his Tasman teammates with his future in his favoured 400m event now up in the air. Alex, who has the sixth equal fastest 400m time ever run in New Zealand of 46.40 seconds, was still visiting specialists to fully understand the implications of what he labelled “health issues”, which was confirmed after his kidneys shutdown following a race in Christchurch earlier this year, landing him a night in Wellington Hospital. It is believed heart and kidney problems are combined with a hyper sensitive nervous system, which means Alex is in more agony at the completion of a 400m than other runners. Speaking on the phone from Wel-

Phillip Rollo Reporter

editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz lington, Alex says he has been given the green light to ease back into training, with a complete overhaul of pre-race nutrition, warm up and warm down exercises but he was still in the dark over his future on the track. “We are just ticking things off on a day-to-day basis,” he says. “It appears my hyper sensitive nervous system is the main thing affecting me which then affects the kidney and the rest of my body.” Because the diagnosis came at a time when Alex had yet to run a 400m this season, and the fact he has taken five weeks off, he was resigned to the fact his attempt at a third national title in a row was now over. “For the past month I’ve been out of running. I haven’t been able to do

any kind of anaerobic work which is key for a 400m runner. I’ve only been able to do slow jogs and go to the gym. "I’m going to go to nationals and run in the 4x100m though, just because I feel like I have a duty to the Tasman team,” he says. Alex says he plans to run the 400m in the future, but the chances of moving up to the 800m were ever more likely. “In the long term I know I will be able to run fast again I just need to work into it. I have at least another eight years of running competitively so I have to think about the long term picture, getting myself right and getting back to 100 per cent fitness. "It was always my long term goal to move up to the 800m in the next 12 months, because it’s more aerobic than anaerobic there is a chance I’ll move it forward earlier because it’s easier on my body.”

Racing champ still three years from driving on the road Every second weekend Trey Kelling tears around the speedway track in his youth ministock, clocking speeds of up to 50kph. But the 13 year old rookie still has to wait another three years before he can legally drive on the road. Trey has been involved in six race meetings during his inaugural season after he was encouraged to sign up by his father’s friend – who is none other than three time New Zealand superstock champion Craig

Boote. Trey, a former go-kart racer, was attending the speedway with his father Brad, who builds the bodies for Boss Motorsport, when the youth ministocks came out to race. Three days later and there was a newly purchased vehicle in the garage. “Mum wasn’t too happy about that,” says Trey, who was just 12 years old at the time, making him the youngest driver in the field. The first task was simple: learn how to drive. “I was stressing a bit just being

able to handle the clutch. The racing part of it wasn’t that bad, it was pretty straight forward. Dad just said stick to the inside and stay out of trouble. It will be a lot different when I actually learn to drive on the road because I can’t hoon around.” Brad’s instructions were for Trey to “drive round and round and don't anything stupid”. But last weekend something changed. Brad’s orders weren’t to just go round and

round, it was up to Trey to drive how he wanted to drive and he ended up seventh overall on the night, landing him the Rookie of the Year. Next year the family have committed to getting three engines and two chassis built, touring the North Island and potentially adding a second Kelling to the race grid. “His sister wants to race. She’s 11 and will be 12 just two weeks after the season starts so hopefully we can get dispensation,” says Brad.
