Man convicted for sending sexually explicit emails of his wife A jilted lover who publicised photos of his ex-wife engaging in sexual activity with a public servant has been convicted for his actions. The man, who has interim name suppression along with his two victims, appeared in the Nelson District Court today where he entered guilty pleas for six counts of causing harm by posting digital communication. The man, and his now ex-wife, who is one of the victims, had been married for 22 years and had an open relationship where

they would invite others to take part in their sex lives. On one of these occasions the man took photos of his wife and another man engaged in a sexual act, with an understanding the photos would never be shared. This man is the second victim. The court heard today that the man’s relationship with his wife broke down on June 16 this year. On July 21 the man sent an email to the second victim’s work address which had a photo of the two victims engaged in sexual activity.

In the email he named the second victim and claimed that he had paid for sex with women by way of money, alcohol and use of vehicles. The email was seen by several people. Later the same day he sent Facebook messages to two of his ex-wife’s friends containing the photo, again identifying the man by name and telling them where he worked. When one of the friend’s responded, asking him to stop, he replied saying “Payback is a bitch”.

The next day, on July 22, he sent another email to the second victim’s workplace, this time addressed to the head of the organisation with the same photo attached. The following day he sent yet another email to the second victim’s main work email, which was read by his supervisor. In this email he accused the victim of destroying marriages and preying on female customers. Judge Peter Butler convicted the man and remanded him for sentencing on December 10.

a friend to a birthday party in Stoke on September 23. At about 2am the victim’s partner watched Gould take a beer from the fridge without permission and asked him to leave, at which point Gould and his associate

became angry. They went outside and challenged the guests to come outside for a fight. Gould and his associate then began kicking and punching the victim in the head. Guests tried to intervene and the victim’s partner

turned the hose on the group. Gould and his associate then both ran away as police arrived. He was sentenced to 80 hours community work and ordered to pay $350 in emotional harm to the victim.

A bold project to build a gondola up a popular Nelson mountainbike track has headed to the next stage with a new company taking over to progress a study into its feasibility. On Monday chief executive of Koata Ltd, Ngāti Koata’s commercial arm, was announced as the chair of a new company – Nelson Adventure Park Ltd. Hemi Toia will oversee the efforts for the gondola project which will sit on Ngati Koata land. “The gondola project team presented their vision to us at the end of last year,” Hemi says. “We could see the potential for such a project as an important asset for Ngāti Koata and the region, so we were pleased to join the team. “The gondola would become an important part of the city’s identity, presenting to the world an incredibly beautiful experience – there are unequalled sea and mountain views at the top." Neighbours take goat issue ‘into own hands’ Charles Anderson The goat population of an Atawhai subdivision seems to have dwindled after complaints that the feral creatures had taken over the neighbourhood. After the Nelson Weekly reported the story last week several locals suggested that they might be able to take care of the problem. A gang of about 20 goats had been jumping into properties and destroying gardens. The goats

would regularly trot down the road. Initially it was unclear which agency had jurisdiction over managing the problem as the goats were breeding on private property and they were feral rather than livestock. However, residents have been contacted this week by Nelson City Council who have arranged a meeting to discuss the on-going management of the goat problem which one neighbour says is a

Clare Barton says that they are aware that there have been issues with ‘feral’ goats but the ongoing control of them is a “fraught issue”. On Facebook, some suggested that the goats were there first, and it was the humans that were intruders. “The kind of people who move next to a farm from town then ring noise control or council to complain that the cows moo to loud,” one said. “Country life is not for all townys.”

However others suggested another solution: goat curry. “That’s dinner walking past right there,” one said. “Easy fix. Dog plus knife. I might come “exercise” the hound there tomorrow,” said another. And it seems that is what has been done. One comment on Facebook said half the goats had been removed over the weekend. “Some of the residents took matters into their own hands.”

TRAFFIC LIGHTS FOR WAIMEA RD: Waimea Rd is earmarked to get another set of traffic lights as a new retirement village development seeks to gain access for its residents. The Coastal Views Lifestyle Village is being built on Prince’s Drive at a cost of $125 million. However, part of its plan is to build a road crossing over the railway reserve and linking it with Waimea Rd, close to the old Bishopdale Pottery site. A council spokesperson said that a speed limit review on this section of Waimea Road was expected later this year. This is looking at reducing the speed limit in the area from 70kmph to 50kmph. NEWS Community housing shortage addressed: Nelson City Council is looking at collaborative solutions to solve the city’s community housing shortage. Last week, councillors were advised that new investment in Nelson’s community housing stock might be possible by working with Housing New Zealand, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development and the Nelson Tasman Housing Trust. Half of the city’s community housing will require renewal within 25 years at an estimated cost of $20 million and waiting lists have hit all-time highs this year. Council’s community housing comprises 142 units within nine complexes. Consultation for Kerr St walkway: Concerns of people drinking alcohol by the Kerr St Walkway have led Nelson City Council to pursue a user survey and informal consultation of the area. The concerns come from local businesses and residents, with police confirming they have had six complaints over the last two years in the area - although it is not known if they were all alcohol-related. Drinking alcohol by the walkway is not controlled through a council bylaw and at a planning and regulatory committee meeting last week it was decided that more information is needed before any action is taken to enhance safety. New market for Wakapuaka: A new market has joined Nelson’s vibrant summer market scene. It all started last year for 12-year-old Sophia Walters. The Nelson Intermediate student was playing with her friends when one of them asked why she was crying. “They thought I was upset, but I just had hay fever,” she says. Having watery eyes is just one of the symptoms that Sophia suffers from in the springtime. Sneezing, a blocked nose, breathing problems and even earaches also plague her. “The first time she had it we thought it was an ear infection, so we went to the ear, nose and throat specialist at the hospital. He said it was just hay fever,” says Sophia’s mother, Jacquie. Jacquie says her daughter’s hay fever has only begun since they moved here from Christchurch a few years ago. Boathouse ready for reopening Charles Anderson The Boathouse is back. On February 1 it was poised to host one of its biggest months in the venue’s 34 year history. But as Cyclone Fehi hit the region, all staff could do was watch in horror as the waterfront building was pummelled by waves and lashed by winds. “It was pretty horrific to see,” says manager Amie-Jo Trayes. “The floorboards where all pushed up and out the front was hit hard.” Now, however, staff are back in their offices, café supplies are arriving, weddings and bands are booked and Nelson’s historic waterfront venue The Boathouse is about to reopen. It’s been an ‘epic effort to get the old girl up and going’ after the

storm damage of Cyclone Fehi back on February 1, according to Boathouse Manager Amie-Jo Trayes. “We had great insurance but the rebuild uncovered more work that needed doing and was also an opportunity for us to make improvements to facilties such as the kitchen and bar,” she says. “Right from the first few hours after the storm we have had amazing support from our builders and other contractors, donations from the community, grants from heritage and community funds and our own members turning out to paint and help with the shift.” Amie-Jo says the new floor was laid using West Coast beech recovered from a previous cyclone, the deck was also renewed, the

Morrison Square’s annual fundraiser for the Nelson Regional Breast and Gynaecological Trust is coming up on Wednesday, 31 October. Appropriately named ‘Fashion at the Flicks’, a $50 ticket will get you a fashion show, drinks, canapes, a charity auction, a “fantastic” goodie bag (valued at around $150), as well as a movie. “The movie is a secret for now

… and there will be a lot of surprises,” says manager of Morrison Square, Angela Leonard. Now in its third year, the proceeds from the event will go towards helping gynaecological and breast cancer patients in Nelson. The last two years’ events made a combined $50,000 which went towards a sentinel node probe for Nelson Hospital, exercise and education classes and to those who need financial help. “Our goal this year is to raise $20,000,” says Angela. “We’re doing something a bit different this time - each year we try to up the ante. It’s a good

Ensuring that people and businesses have a reliable power supply as soon as possible after an emergency event is a responsibility that Network Tasman takes very seriously. We participate in the Nelson Tasman Lifelines group which works together to improve the resilience of critical infrastructure services across the region including water, electricity, communications and fuel. We also have a portable back-up control room that has a generator and radio communications. This means we can maintain our control room function even if the control room at our head office in Richmond is unavailable. Practising is crucial when it comes to being prepared so we run exercises from our back-up control room to make sure it is ready in the event of an emergency. Many of our customers live and work in rural areas so to enhance resilience following a disaster we initiated Project Plug. This project has involved us identifying rural schools that could function as community hubs, then pre-wiring a socket so they can easily connect to a generator if and when required. The Nelson victim of the Royal New Zealand Airforce’s worst ever disaster has been remembered by the next generation of cadets – 65 years after it happened. The crash at Wigram, which killed seven men near Christchurch in 1953, remains the worst RNZAF crash in New Zealand history. Among the victims was Nelsonian Sholto Duncan, who was buried at Wakapuaka Cemetery. Sholto was the squadron leader and was a well-known and decorated war veteran, having flown fighter aircraft in the Pacific during World War II, from 1943 to 1945. On Sunday members of the local Squadron Air Training Corps paid their respects at Sholto’s grave. There was a short speech, a calling of the roll of honour for those who had died and a rendition of the Last Post. Armed forces veteran Brian Ramsay says it’s important that

John Key drops in to push hospice fundraising Charles Anderson Sir John Key dropped in on the Nelson Tasman Hospice last to help raise funds as new figures reveal the organisation’s new home still needs $800,000 to get it over the line. The total cost of the new facility on Suffolk Rd site in Stoke is $11.5 million, with the hospice contributing $7.5 million. This leaves the hospice needing a further $4 million. Now, however, it only needs $800,000. "It's great that we're getting closer to the new build target - the community has been right behind it," said fundraising and marketing manager Paul McIntyre. "Our fundraising efforts are really helped along by the fact that the hospice service gets such positive feedback from patients' families. But we know there are other worthwhile causes out there too so we're very grateful for the support." Sir John also dropped in to lend his support last week for a small fundraising lunch. “I have a personal connection to the Nelson hospice, my step mother-in-law passed away at the old facility and she got the best care in the world,” he said. “So it is great

Your Voice Private Samuel Chase: I was deeply affected by Private Samuel Chase's story and greatly appreciate those who have honoured him after so long. I will make it my business to visit this dear man's grave. Bryan Forrest City development: Regarding the new planned mall in Nelson, my wife and I have two comments concerning first, the number of vacancies in the Nelson CDB and second, the essence of Nelson City. Firstly, we walked the 4 blocks comprising the CBD and found 23 vacant shop fronts on the ground floors and 8 vacancies on the second floors. We do not believe that we need more shops, but we need incentives to bring more people to the CBD and to provide monetary assistance to the renters of these storefronts. We previously mentioned closing Hardy St and Upper Tra-

falgar St facing the church steps to traffic, which would bring more people to the area. Also, to help the renters and retailers of the shop fronts, why not insist on a rent control programme that would lower the rents to make it affordable for small businesses to thrive. We have heard that rents are extremely high from numerous shop retailers. It is our belief that just a few individuals and/or consortiums own most of the buildings in the CBD, so why not have them help revitalize our city by lowering their profit margins. The second point is that we love the atmosphere of Nelson and that the mall atmosphere of Richmond is not something that we would like here, plus it would take away much needed parking spaces. Nelson Matters Death and taxes have long been references as the two certainties in life. Three reports this month have highlighted the excessive tax appetite of the Ardern/Peters government. The Government has hiked the petrol taxes three times in their first year and another three increases are planned that will add another 10c a litre over the next two years. It rubs salt in the wound that Labour promised no new taxes. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern was disingenuous last week in slating fuel companies for “fleecing” New Zealanders and claiming the increase in tax was only

6.8 cents per litre. She failed to include the increase in petrol excise tax of 3.5 cents/litre introduced on 1 October and the new 10c/litre regional fuel tax. The combination of tax and levies now makes up over half the cost and is the reason we pay much more than Australia where petrol is $1.59 per litre. The increase in petrol taxes has been compounded by a falling kiwi dollar. The Government needs to accept some responsibility for this too. Its economic policies of banning overseas investment, ending oil and gas exploration, increasing taxation and record strikes have

seen business confidence plummet and the kiwi dollar fall. Petrol taxes have been raised in the past but never as quickly or by so much. An historic comparison shows petrol per litre was 91c in 1999, $1.77 in 2008, $1.96 in 2017 and is now $2.48. That equates to an 8% a year rise under the Clark Labour Government, a 1% per year rise under the Key/English National Government and a 25% rise in the first year of this Ardern/Peters Government! The increases in fuel tax come in the same week as the Government reveals a $5.5 billion surplus for 2017/18. This equates

'You might notice I stutter' Stanley Page-Bates Wikipedia says stuttering is a speech disorder characterized by repetition of sounds, syllables, or words; prolongation of sounds; and interruptions in speech known as blocks. Ask me ‘what is stuttering’ and I will give you a definition that is not necessarily fit to print. Hello, my name is Stanley Page-Bates, and with International Stuttering Awareness Day on October 22, it’s time to tell my stuttering story. I live in Richmond, Nelson and I’m 15 years old. When I was three I started stumbling over my words. Being three-years-old with an expanding my vocabulary, having trouble speaking isn’t anything rare. But it soon became a habit and progressed into a full-blown stutter – I was one of the 1 per cent of the worldwide population with a stutter. By the time I was five, my stutter was the worst it had ever been. I can still remember sitting on the mat in my class, on my first term of primary school. We were passing a microphone around the class introducing ourselves - this is the definition of ‘terror’ for a stutterer. I used to dread a speaking situation involving people who can judge me. It seemed to take minutes just to say, “hello my name is Stanley”. I can remember kids laughing and I started to wonder if there was something badly wrong with me. My parents have gone on this journey

with me and have had a huge impact on trying to correct my stutter. Putting in countless time, money and effort with my speech. We tried many forms of speech therapy such as the Lidcombe Programme and the Camperdown Programme, while these helped me understand my stutter better and taught me techniques to improve my speech, as I got older, they all came out second best. At the age of 14 my parents introduced me to the McGuire Programme. At first, I thought that it would be like all other speech therapies I had done, and a massive waste of money and time. The programme is generally for people who were older because it is a pretty intense course. However, I got accepted and in September 2016, I found myself in Christchurch for my very first McGuire Course. Right off the bat I knew this was different from other speech therapy courses I had

been on. The four-day course was pretty full-on, they don’t call it a’ four-day intensive’ for nothing. I learned techniques and lessons to use in my everyday life. The McGuire Programme, in my opinion, was my saviour. The programme is not about ‘fixing’ a stutter, it is about helping stutterers become confident eloquent speakers. When following the correct speaking and breathing patterns I spoke fluently without blocking. I had spoken fluently before – usually after each speech therapy session, I like to call it the “honeymoon phase”, but then slowly my old habits came back – I‘d revert back to stuttering profusely. But with the McGuire Programme there is an international phone support system where you can call other members of the programme and practise the McGuire techniques to avoid relapse. I have used this on many occasions before speaking situations or when my stutter has spiked. Today I can confidentially speak in front of any number of people and the McGuire techniques I learned sure help me in difficult, as well as every day, speaking situations. New Zealand is lucky to have its very own programme and support network – led by Denis Wright, with the next course in Wellington on 30 January 2019. FIREFIGHTERS CHALLENGE: A volunteer firefighter takes part in the Nelson/ Marlborough provincial Fire Brigade Association Firefighter Challenge at the Speights Ale House on Saturday. Kitted out in full firefighter gear and a breathing apparatus, competitors were faced with a series of obstacles including climbing a tower carrying a length of hose, hoisting a hose coil, swinging a sledgehammer and dragging a lifesized dummy for 30 metres. The idea has been to continue it as the second site for McCashin's Brewery Kitchen and Bar; at McCashins Hop Garden, McCashin’s product will be profiled through good service, good food and good beverage in a fabulous location, Founders

Milestone Season at Milestone Homes Speedway Wayne Martin Some key events happened in 1968. Of course, there was the sad news of the fate of the ferry Wahine which foundered off the rocks in Wellington Har-

bour as well as, in May of that very year, there was the devastating earthquake that rocked Inangahua. Overseas, the headlines were of the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Senator Robert Kennedy, while the self-titled album “The Beatles” was released.

Otherwise known as the White Album, it is still regarded to this day as The Beatles best to date. Some good news did happen that year though and it started right here in little old Nelson. Yes, that’s right, it was

the formation of the Tasman Scramble Car club (later to be known as the Nelson Speedway Association) and the rest, as they say, is history. As you have probably guessed ,this season is the 50th anniversary of this local iconic track nestled at the bottom of

Lower Queen street and the club have some big nights of racing and festivities ahead to celebrate such an auspicious milestone. Friday night (19th Oct) we will be hosting a meet and greet in the clubrooms located at the track which will be a great night to catch up with some of the old and not so old competitors from over the years and talk about the hey days of local speedway. As expected, we will be guessing some tall tales will be told at this event. The following day, on the Saturday, (20th) there will be a show and shine in the speedway car park for all the fans and general public to come along and have a look at some of the cars of yesteryear, as well as the modern race cars. This is free to the public so come along and get your photo taken in your favourite race car and have a chat to some of the drivers. That night, of course, is the opening night meeting where we will be contesting the annual Trackman Trophies in memory of the

late Murray Teece as well as we have around twenty historic stockcars here to show us how it was done “in their day”. The Sunday night (21st)

SPEEDWAY wheel racing in the USA which should see the cream rise to the top. Wheel to wheel action for everyone. The 9th March will see what looks to be a massive field of Sidecars here to compete in the Ricks Tyre & Auto South Island Sidecar championship. We will see competitors here from one end of the island to the other with bikes from Invercargill, Christchurch, Blenheim and Nelson expected to front for this event. The crazies of speedway, as they are affection-

ately known, are pretty much just that. An odd number of wheels on a bike with a lot of power and no brakes is justifiably crazy for most of us “normal” people, but for these competitors it’s just “another night at the speedway”. Then there are the other big meetings in the offering, like the Coca Cola Fireworks night on the 3rd November. This season the club, along with Coca Cola, have spared no expense on a pyrotechnic display to rival no other. Mum’s and Dads, make sure you get the tribe there early for this one as it’s guaranteed to pack the house out as per other seasons. Other big meetings of note are the ever-popular Hydraulink War of the Wings Sprintcar series (17th November and 6th April) where we are hosting two rounds this season 3858, Richmond proudly supported by Mike

Mike Stringer is on a mission to educate Nelson about the beauty of distilling one’s own whiskey. Mike, who helped found the home beer brewing shop League of Brewers, reckons that soon spirits will go the same way as craft beer. “We have this situation where craft distilling is becoming like brewing. It will become vogue – this is the next wave.” So, League of Brewers plans on riding it by selling all the equipment needed to create homemade spirits. Because of a law change in 1996, New Zealand is the only Western country where it's legal to make your own spirits. You can't get away with this sort of carry-on

“So maybe we have picked up some of their mana along the way,” Mike jokes.

But as part of that mission he is holding a whiskey night on Thursday at 5.30pm where people who are either sceptical or overwhelmed at the idea of making their own spirits can come and try some. “What we are wanting to do is to have a range of these products made available for people to taste if they are deciding if they want to make something.” But the most important question: does it taste any good? “Absolutely. I’ve been really impressed. As long as the spirit you are working with is good quality then you have nothing to worry about.” While a full distilling kit will set you back several hundred dollars Mike says in the long run it can be a very economical pastime. “Especially if you like your whiskey.”

For those who don’t already know, the only auto dismantler in Nelson city - Seeka Panels and Parts - is located in Vanguard Street’s busy commercial zone. The business specialises in three main areas: automotive parts, mechanical repairs and radiator repairs. “We have a lot of regular customers, but there will also be people who may not realise we are here,” says co-owner Robert Jefcoate. Seeka Panels and Parts was first established in 1998, then some years later, in 2009, Robert and his wife Sheryl bought into the radiator side of things. “It’s been a great ‘add-on’ and it’s the part of the business we’d like more people to know about.” The Seeka team, including Radiator Specialist Stu Brown, can repair all types of radiators. “We can do cooling system analysis, supply and fit new radiators, repair secondhand ones, and we can also build custom radiators for special projects; we do quite a bit of restoration work on old cars, for people who are restorers,” says Robert. “Preventative maintenance on cooling systems is something that gets overlooked, until it’s too late!” Although it doesn’t issue warrants, the business can also do small mechanical repairs prior

Three local young people have been chosen to attend the 2019 World Scout Jamboree, in West Virginia, USA. Kathryn Martin, Theo Wheatley and Liam Lloyd have compiled a 2019 calendar, using historic Nelson Scout photos, and are selling them to help raise money for the event. Kathryn says she thoroughly enjoys the scout organisation. She has been in the Nelson Iron Duke Sea Scouts for nearly five years and, along with Theo Wheatley, has achieved the Chief Scout Award – an award which takes four years to complete and is one of the highest a scout can earn. Both Kathryn and Theo are also on their way to earning the Queen Scout Award - the highest youth award achievable in the Scouting movement in the commonwealth. “Scouts is a really good con-

Bridget Smith, Nelson Zone training leader, says it is quite exceptional to have three people from our zone that are attending. “It is an amazing experience and having up to 70 youths from New Zealand is a pretty big contingent for us – and three of them are from our region. Australia have around 200 going.” The group will have to cover costs for the jamboree, flights and uniforms, plus extra for spending money and internal flights, by June 2019. SpOrtS HOCKEY: Last week Nelson played host to a national junior hockey tournament, the Hatch Cup. The Under 13 boy’s tournament saw 24 teams from different associations around the country descend on Saxton Turf for the six-day event. The Nelson U13 boys team finished 18th. Meanwhile, the U13 girls side travelled to North Harbour for the annual Collier Cup, finishing in ninth position.

Grant helps repair storm-damaged golf course Sara Hollyman Nelson Golf Club is back in tip-top shape after a $30,000 flood-repair job. The Tahunanui-based club was severely damaged when extropical cyclone Fehi ripped through the region in February .

Club President Derek Drysdale says damage put "a strain" on the club but that the work has been finished in time for what is expected to be a busy summer. “We suffered quite a lot of damage, not only along the shoreline but also around the first hole which is near the

tidal creek.” He says around 60 per cent of the tee was washed away and the fairway has browned after salt water flooded the grass. The storm also battered other parts of the course, badly damaging the first, second and fourteenth holes. Derek says the work to repair

the course and add flood protections, like a new seawall, has cost approximately $30,000. Repairs have just been completed thanks in part to a $20,000 grant from the New Zealand Community Trust, which was announced last week. “The grant has been a huge help to us.”

Tasman will next play Hamilton Wanderers at Saxton Field on Saturday, October 27 at 1pm.

Nelson all-rounder Willie Ludick notched his maiden first class century on Saturday as the Central Stags opened its Plunket Shield defence with a thrilling victory. A rare, double 0-0 declaration saw both sides push for a result after losing two days to rain at Saxton Field. With Canterbury chasing an unlikely 353 for victory, the Stags had the visitors on the ropes at 131-9 before a defiant last wicket stand. Tail enders Will Williams and Andrew Hazeldine came together at the crease and spend 26.5 overs frustrating the Stags as the game headed for a draw. However, Ryan McCone castled Hazeldine with just seven balls remaining to claim the 145-run win in dramatic fashion. Day one saw the Stags sent into bat. After a shaky start, Ludick was part of a resurgent middle order which helped the hosts to 301/7 at stumps.

The third annual ‘Rally Against Breast Cancer’ family day will take place next Sunday, October 28. Sponsored by Kelly Bowater Travel, the sessions, called 'cardio tennis', will run on courts at nine tennis clubs around the region. #FinZ Up The Tasman Mako continue to prove itself a powerhouse of provincial rugby. Just 12 years after the amalgamation of Nelson Bays and Marlborough, Tasman has made the Mitre 10 Cup semi-finals for the fifth consecutive year, finishing the regular season second on the premiership table.

The Mako will host defending champions Canterbury in Nelson this Friday night in a rematch of the 2017 and â€™18 finals, as it looks to go one better than previous years and win its first Mitre 10 cup premiership. The Mako upset Canterbury 25-17 in the 2018 season opener at Lansdowne Park but will be very wary of the threat posed by the Red and Blacks come finals footy, having won nine of the last ten Mitre 10 Cup titles. However, Tasman has played a scintillating brand of rugby this season and will head to Trafalgar Park full of confidence, boasting a fiercely physical pack and dazzling backline. With one of the most respected coaches in the country at the helm in former All Black Leon MacDonald, the welldisciplined Tasman outfit conceded the fewest penalties in the competition with just 84.

Led by David Havili in the midfield, the Mako has largely looked untouchable, earning seven bonus points from ten outings with star fullback Will Jordan finishing second equal on the try scoring table with nine and carrying for the most metres in the competition with 875. Another standout was lock Pari Pari Parkinson, his towering presence helping the Mako boast the best lineout in the competition. Parkinson was aided by a dominant Mako front row, veteran Wyatt Crockett combining with hooker Andrew Makalio and young powerhouse Tyrel Lomax to ensure the Mako rarely took a backward step.

After making his Super Rugby debut with the champion Crusaders, flanker Ethan Blackadder took his game to another level, his physicality and stamina propelling his name into All Blacks contention. Mitch Hunt continues to grow as playmaker, accumulating 105 points for the season, just four behind leader Bryn Gatland from North Harbor. The mercurial first-five was provided superb service from livewire halfback Finlay Christie, whose running game made him a constant threat from the base. However, the efforts of the nation’s newest union over the past five years suggest they belong among the big city boys, but they have yet to land a premiership trophy to back up that elevated status. Although they have struggled against Canterbury come playoff time since they beat them twice in 2014, Tasman will be buoyed this time by home crowd support and a run of six consecutive NPC victories since they suffered their only loss of the season, a 36-10 hiding from Auckland. If Tasman are successful, and Wellington tip over Auckland, the NPC final would be held at Lansdowne Park in Blenheim, the first since 1996 when Marlborough hosted Wanganui in the third division decider.

A new season, a new coach and a new look Tasman United side will take the field for its third year in the ISPS Handa Premiership this weekend. Tasman kick of the new season against defending champions Auckland City on Sunday at Kiwitea St in the City of Sails. Just four members remain in the squad from last season in Sam Ayers, Alex Ridsdale, Corey Wilson and Matt Tod-Smith. Among the new names are Ronaldo Wilkins from Vanuatu, Kiernan Hughes-Mason and Ryan Worrall of England and former Phoenix keeper Keegan Smith. Some familiar faces to locals include Suburbs striker Jordan Yong and the returning Fox Slotemaker. Jordan says he is very excited to get the season underway and wants to help the club go one better than their sixth-place finish in 2017. The 28-year old says new coach Andy Hedge is a huge coup for the club. "I am really looking forward to working with Andy given his

Jordan says the squad is coming together nicely. “There are a few boys from Suburbs that have been announced and, with us reaching the Chatham Cup semifinals, I think that speaks volumes of the quality we are bringing in.” He says, while they may be a young team, there is plenty of experience in the ranks. "There are players with a bit of experience such as myself, Tom Hickey and Ryan Worell (though they are young lads they have

played plenty of football), if you combine that with the youngsters, there is a good core and obviously we have a good keeper in Corey (Wilson), so my ambition is to go one better than last year.” Andy says he is relishing the new opportunity at Tasman. The former Wellington Phoenix youth coach and New Zealand Football talent development manager says developing youth has played a big part in his coaching career so far, so he's hoping to "polish a few diamonds" while in the Top of the South. "A lot of my coaching has been with youth and my biggest attribute has been around youth development, but this is a chance to test myself with men. I saw

Stoke bowlers chance at big pay day Jonty Dine

Nelson’s best bowlers are preparing for a new national tournament with a prize pool worth $28,000. The Stoke Thunder are one of six sides from around the country invited to compete in the inaugural Bowls3Five tournament kicking off in Auckland next month. The televised tournament will run for six weeks, with Stoke starting their campaign against the Royal Oak Rockets from Auckland on October 23. Stoke Thunder team members Pete Hodson and James Pugh say they are excited to be a part of bowls history. “It’s a different sort of format, a much faster format than what we are used to playing,” Pete says. The competition will see two bowls delivered per person, with at least one female per team. Also in the squad are New Zealand bowlers Kirsten Edwards and Shannon McIlroy. “Shannon doesn’t need an introduction and Kirsten is another former international herself, so the team will be pretty confident.”

Brendon says the squad’s depth is its strength. Teams play two sets of five ends with a single end tie-break if needed. There will also be a ‘powerplay’ featuring, where sides can earn double points for a win. “You have got to be on your toes right from the get-go, two five end sets go by pretty quick,” says Pete. Team manager Brendon Hodgson says the Stoke Thunder will have no shortage of big bowls experience come tournament time. James has represented New Zealand at the U25 world championship, while Pete is a former New Zealand singles champion. As a pair, James and Pete also won the New Zealand club champs this year, winning 16 games on the trot. Nelson’s national paddleboard champion is preparing to test out international waters. Having taken out the New Zealand championships in March, Tara Hope will compete against the best paddlers in the world at the ISA World Stand Up Paddleboard championships in China’s Hainan Island next month. Having only taken up the sport a few years ago, Tara says she was shocked about her selection. “I thought it was a bit of a long shot, but I am so stoked.” She will race in the distance and surf events with the possibility of competing in the relay and sprints. “It could be a long week.” The New Zealand team of ten will depart for China on November 20 with the competition kicking off on the 24th.

She says it will be a highlight of her short career. “I am still in the planning phase, but once I get on the plane I’ll get pretty excited.” Tara’s current workout regime sees her spend hours grinding

away in preparation for her international debut. “I have been paddling 70 plus kilometres each week and going to the gym and on runs, it’s a lot of time on the water.” The national champion also bal-

ances her rigid training schedule with a part-time job and her young family. Tara works at Waimea College in the sports department and has two sons Cooper, 8, and Carter, 6. “It’s not easy but I have a pretty

supportive family, my husband helps out wherever he can, and my boys are pretty used to being on the beach by now.” Tara says, while she will go to China with the goal of gold, she ultimately wants to go out, have fun and grow as an athlete from rubbing shoulders with the best in the business. “I think winning will be a long shot, there are professionals who do this full time but seeing the level of the athletes and meeting the people I have been watching online and looking up to will be a pretty major thing.” Tara has created a GiveaLittle page to help with her travel costs of around $5000 to get her 12 foot 6 paddleboard over. “There is no financial support from the association or anything, which is difficult.” To help get Tara to China, go to givealittle.co.nz/cause/help-gettara-hope-to-the-world-stand-up

Tahunanui Tennis Club has replaced one of its courts thanks to the Rata Foundation. Club President Craig Welsh says the $34,000 replacement would not have been possible without the foundation’s sponsorship. The turf is the second to last to be replaced, the final one having been damaged by a truck crash in August. They have cut the old turf into square metre sections which they would like to make available for the public to take. Women's cricket set to take off Sara Hollyman

Nelson Cricket hosted an open day for female players on Sunday in an effort to "lead the way" with encourging more women and girls into the game. The open day at Saxton Field was a fun day encouraging females of all ages to try their hand with a bat and ball. White Fern Hannah Rowe and Black Sticks Olympic Hockey representative Anita McLaren were there helping out. Nelson Cricket have also created a role dedicated solely to encouraging women into the sport. Former Waimea College

and Wakatu cricketer Claudia Green, who is studying physical education at Otago University, had her first day on the job on Monday which she was “really awesome”. She started playing cricket for Jon Linyard’s Waimea Intermediate girls team when she was 11-years-old. She continued playing for the Waimea College girls team before switching to the Wakatu men’s second grade team and then the Taieri men’s second grade team when she moved to Dunedin “I had to start playing in the men’s teams to get a reasonable standard of cricket. There weren’t any good women’s teams in Nelson and there

was none in Dunedin, so a lot of the girls play for men’s teams. She says her focus will be on growing the women’s game with participation and opportunities. “It’s really cool that there’s the opportunity now for girls to get involved in the game and its great for me to be able to be a voice for these girls.” Claudia will be working with local primary schools this term offering in-school coaching sessions. “Cricket clubs have offered this a lot, but I’ll be having more of a focus on the girls, so I’ll be separating them from the boys which will really help their confidence

grow.” She says often girls can feel too nervous when trying to compete against the boys, so they don’t get the same chances to grow their skillbase. While her main focus will be on the ‘grass roots’ level of cricket she says there will also be programs put in place right the way through. “We are currently looking at developing a girls’ on intermediate level cricket team which is really exciting.” Claudia says her role coincides with the first time Nelson’s new all-women cricket team has the same training opportunities as their men’s teams.
