Suter upgrade questioned Andrew Board The idea of building a brand new art gallery instead of trying to “make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear” at the Suter has been floated this week. Nelson City Councillor Paul Matheson says it is worthwhile investigating whether the $6.9 million council is proposing to

spend on upgrading the Suter could be better spent building a brand new facility at Rutherford Park. Discussion opens this week on the long term plan and Paul says he will be asking the Suter if that option has been explored as he thinks it will make much better use of the money. “We spent $3million on the cricket pavilion at Saxton Field and that is

fantastic. What could we do with $6million at Rutherford Park for an art gallery? Sometimes we just need to step outside that comfort zone that we have built around a project and have a look outside the square.” But Craig Potton, the chair of the trust board that runs the Suter Art Gallery, says the Suter’s history cannot be ignored and

he believes the cost would be around double that of the current proposal. “We have a design and a feel for that space that we are happy with and it incorporates the oldest gallery in New Zealand, on our own property. That site of the gallery is the longest running public sited gallery in

Bomber ready for take off The Air Nelson hangar is temporarily holding what could be the only flying Avro Anson Mk I bomber in existence. After almost a decade of museum life, it was fully restored by Wakefield man Bill Reid and the 1943 aircraft looks set to be flying as early as next weekend. The project has taken Bill ten years to complete. The length of time had to be stretched as a world-wide search for parts took much longer than expected because of its rarity.
