Suter upgrade questioned Andrew Board The idea of building a brand new art gallery instead of trying to “make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear” at the Suter has been floated this week.

Nelson City Councillor Paul Matheson says it is worthwhile investigating whether the $6.9 million council is proposing to

spend on upgrading the Suter could be better spent building a brand new facility at Rutherford Park.

Discussion opens this week on the long term plan and Paul says he will be asking the Suter if that option has been explored as he thinks it will make much better use of the money. “We spent $3million on the cricket pavilion at Saxton Field and that is

fantastic. What could we do with $6million at Rutherford Park for an art gallery? Sometimes we just need to step outside that comfort zone that we have built around a project and have a look outside the square.”

But Craig Potton, the chair of the trust board that runs the Suter Art Gallery, says the Suter’s history cannot be ignored and

he believes the cost would be around double that of the current proposal.

“We have a design and a feel for that space that we are happy with and it incorporates the oldest gallery in New Zealand, on our own property. That site of the gallery is the longest running public sited gallery in

Paul says he started thinking of other options for the Suter when he was looking at the long term plan, where the Suter upgrade is included.

He says he has spoken with some of his council colleagues who agree it could be an interesting proposal but Craig is certain an upgrade of the current building will be what’s best for the city.

“Our site is big enough, our site has historic value, our site was given by the same people who gave us the pond and they intended art and nature to sit beside each other. So I’m pretty keen on it being where it is.”

Bill was always fond of vintage aeroplanes, having previously owned a Tiger Moth when he and Robyn first met, so found out what was available on the current market. That search led the Reids to an aero museum that was closing down in Wangaratta, Australia.

They were immediately hooked on an Avro Anson, which was up for sale. The Reids decided to purchase the twin-engine aircraft, so it was dismantled and shipped back to New Zealand in pieces. Local preschool chef among best in NZ Andrew Board Rachel Stott has beaten hundreds of chefs from around New Zealand to be a finalist in the NZ Vegetarian Dish Challenge but you can’t visit her restaurant to taste the meal – you will have to enrol at preschool instead.

Rachel was selected as one of 20 finalists from around the country for her vegetarian curry dish but instead of working at one of Nelson’s top restaurants she works at Hardy Kids Early Learning Centre, cooking food for preschoolers each day.

She says she entered the competition because she had a “pretty good” vegetarian curry recipe in her head and was buzzing with the news that her recipe will be added to a cook book as part of the competition.

“The dish I make at the preschool I didn’t have a

recipe for, it was in my head. So I had to go home and play around with it and write it all down. I didn’t expect to get anywhere at all.”

Rachel says when a box arrived containing her trophy and telling her she was a finalist she initially thought it was parts for her oven.

“So I finished my dishes before I even opened it and couldn’t believe what I saw. I so was excited, I was just buzzing, it was just really cool. Because we are a just a centre, not a café, not a restaurant, it’s a bit of a coup.”

Rachel does have plenty of restaurant and café experience in Nelson though and is now in line to be one of the top three who will be flown to Auckland for a cook-off.

The final three will be announced in July.

The one other finalist from Nelson was Grant Dicker from The Mint Dining Room.

I recently discovered this 1957 press cutting in my archives and in view of the ongoing debate on the merit or otherwise of a conference centre (the modern version of a town hall) for Nelson this report may be of some interest. Decisions in Nelson are not made in haste, perhaps a throwback to when Nelson was known as "Sleepy Hollow". Good things take time!

Young volunteers to be recognised

In just over a week from today 22 year old Johnny Fraser will be recognised for his volunteering efforts at the Nelson Youth Volunteer evening – but it has him a little embarrassed.

“I kind of feel a bit selfish because I was doing it for me more than them. It made me feel good,” says the Nelson student and volunteer at Presbyterian Support in Stoke.

But it’s the efforts of Johnny and the 150 other young Nelson people being

recognised at next week’s ceremony that makes such a huge contribution to the region, says Mary Curnow, chair of Volunteer Nelson.

Each of the nominees will receive a recognition certificate at the New Hub on the night of the ceremony. Johnny says he is looking forward to the night and meeting other volunteers and was surprised to have been nominated. “I was totally surprised, and yeah sure, I was happy.”

Johnny says he started volunteering at Presbyterian Support after he moved to Nelson from Wellington and heard about it through a friend of his aunt. “I was only working nights as a kitchen hand so had my days free and I met everyone and every time I left I just felt really good because they were all lovely and appreciated you being here.”

He says he works in the kitchen, preparing meals and then serving them. He also plays games with the dementia clients and even helps them get home via the charity’s van. He says the work is good fun.

“The old birds like to give you hugs and compliments, squeeze your cheeks and that sort of thing and the guys like to talk sports and tell me about their life.”

Day service manager Sasha Spargo says the help of Johnny and the other 40 volunteers at the centre is a huge help. “Younger people liven the oldies up that bit more, they love having someone young. Just because you’re old it doesn’t mean you want to hang out with a bunch of old fogies all day and I guess they look at Johnny as a grandson-type person, someone they can hug and look after and encourage. It also keeps them connected with other generations, especially if they don’t have family living close by,” she says.

Johnny says he has the volunteer bug now and says he can’t imagine leaving Presbyterian Support and encourages anyone his age to give volunteering a go.

“There is no down side, it’s just good.”

The awards are being held at the New Hub on Wednesday, June 21.

Buildings a ‘quake risk’

Nelson’s top bands are getting set to battle and organisers say the outcome will mean a gig to remember.

Eleven bands have registered for the event, filling the roster for the Battle of the Bands at the Shark Club this Saturday night.

Organiser Reuben Dudley says the event will start at 7pm and feature bands playing their original music for 20 minutes. Judges will then select an overall winner with spectators also able to vote for a people’s choice winner.

“It’s a really good chance for people to check out some of Nelson’s top musicians all in one night.”

Organiser Aaron Douglas says the variety means people will be able to stay for the entire night of entertainment. “If it’s a band you like, then great, you get to hear them for 20 minutes and if it’s one you don’t like you only have to wait a short while until a new band comes on. It’s a good situation for the crowd.”

The winner will be crowned around 1.30am and Reuben says support from local businesses has contributed to the prize pool.

Local students get a taste of work

Free car seat check Plunket and Baby on the Move are once again hosting a free car seat check point for child restraints, after previous checks showed a woeful lack of understanding from parents.

Organisers hope to raise awareness and increase the percentage of seats properly installed,

Nelson College for Girls and Nelson College will be sending groups of students along to Sealord, Tonkin and Taylor, Work and Income/Child Youth and Family, and Port Nelson to look at a wide range of career options – from aquaculture to social work.

pathways for students coming towards the end of their secondary studies and provides the necessary link with a range of potential employers and career paths.

Creativity reigns at Garin Scheduled classes were collapsed in favour of singing, dancing and painting at Garin College for the annual Mahi Toi. For two days the students celebrated the spirit of the arts, giving students a chance to discover and explore their creative talents.

This was the 10th year the celebration has been held, with students having the freedom to participate in a range of activities either individually or as a part of a group. Many of the activities became a competition between the school’s four houses.

The cupcake decorating proved the most popular activity, say organisers. Bands from the school had the

chance to play for their classmates, including fifth form band Speaking in Silence. The school’s own version of Wearable Arts also revealed some impressive creations.

“Everyone looks forward to it each year. No other school has two days for it,” says student Philip Gibson.

Cath Aronsten, arts director at Garin, says the event is a chance for students who don’t normally expose a talent to perform around their peers and gain their encouragement.

“It’s about nurturing creativity in a safe environment. The audiences are so good with applause and encouragement, and from that the stars are born,” says Cath.

Anyone that dead lifts their body weight will go into the draw to claim $1000 worth of vouchers. The Power Angels described themselves as three “mothers” who double as national power lifting champions. The competition will raise some publicity for the trio before they take on the national champs later in the year.

Entry into the challenge is $2 per person.

• A busy week for the port last week. Six container ships, a fruit ship departed, a log ship departed and another arrived, a general cargo carrier left, the big car carrier came and went, 12 large fishing vessels arrived, shifted or departed the port. All this despite the very strong winds during Tuesday and Wednesday.

• The strong winds were something to watch out for and caught a few unwary out. Most people were sensible enough to stay at home that day and fortunately no distress calls were received. A mayday call was heard over the weekend but more about that later….

• I heard through the grapevine that even the most experienced amongst us can make mistakes. One captain anchored his vessel the way he always does and left it in the belief it was secure until his relief Skipper turned up the next day. The relief Skipper couldn’t see the boat and thought Captain A must have stayed out longer than expected so he went home. Two days later both captains met up

on the beach, both believing the other had the boat but the boat was nowhere to be seen.

Fortunately for the owner, a sharp eyed fisherman had sighted their vessel anchored??? Just inside Farewell Spit. The lucky skippers and their vessel were soon reunited.

• How could this occur? When you anchor your vessel for real surety I suggest the anchor warp you put out should be five times the maximum expected water depth. If your warp is all chain perhaps three times is acceptable.

In this instance I don’t believe the Captain checked the fact that extra high tides were due and so when the tide came in his anchor lifted and the boat drifted – many miles away until it snagged the bottom once again inside Farewell Spit. A lucky man.

• Check your anchor shackles, knots, chain and rope regularly as they can also be the cause of embarrassment should they break.

Last year 150 trail runners and walkers were ‘captured’ in the Nelson Events, Escape from Tane’s Forest event held in the Brook Sanctuary and surrounds. This year is set to be even bigger.

Now to be called the Haven Realty Sanctuary Run, the event is back on Saturday June 30, with well over 100 runners and walkers already signed on to complete the 14km short course or longer 25km option.

Haven Realty Principal, Darryl Marshall, was astounded after a recent walk into the head of the Sanctuary. "I didn’t know what was hidden beyond the walls of the old dam site," he says. "This unique asset situated so close to Nelson’s CBD will become a special ‘must do destination’ for locals plus visitors to the region. We’re proud to put our company’s name behind an

event which has got it all - History, mystery and scenery and set to stay on the trail runners calendar for many years to come."

While the long course is restricted to those able to complete a half marathon (21.1km) or equivalent in under 2hours 15minutes, the short course can be comfortably achieved by anyone able to ‘tread their feet’ off the tarseal for up to 2hours.

Nelson Events spokesperson, Graeme West, believes all will certainly have been "captured" by the Sanctuary before they come across the finish line. But the day does not end there. A sumptuous meal will be washed down with a special "hangi beer" brewed by Nelson’s McCashin family at the post event prize giving and celebrations in the Trafalgar Centre. Women score big win for Stoke

Stoke tasted success on Saturday and boy did it taste good.

The division one team was defaulted to by Marlborough team Moutere but the women’s team scored a good win while the division two team were in fine form.

All 22 Stoke Womens’ players got significant game time against Huia on Saturday, but not in the way that might have been expected. Huia were well down on numbers, and could easily have defaulted, but thankfully was allowed to tap into Stoke’s reserve bench to get 15 on the pitch in its 60-19 win.

At least 9 different Stoke players donned Huia colours during the match, banking valuable game time albeit against their regular team-mates. There was often no love lost between friends as the scrum and breakdowns were fierce.

Comeback Kid Janene Bang was rid of the managers’ clipboard this week and redefined “retirement” by crossing early for Stoke’s first try. Casey Anderson and Majorie Thomas also dotted down to complete the treble of first time try-scorers this season. Dependable fullback Anita Currie was solid all day and picked up player of the match honours.

While Stoke ran out to an impressive win in the end, huge thanks must be given to Huia for fronting up and making a game of it when so low on numbers.

The efforts of Stoke players who pulled on the Huia jersey cannot be understated. You did yourselves and your club proud. Well done ladies.

Stoke travelled down to play the only undefeated team of the Senior B competition, Murchison, on Saturday.

broke the line and scored. However, his try was disallowed by the local referee who awarded Murchison a penalty for a double movement. Soon after that was halftime and the score was 29-0. With a couple of jellybeans at halftime, a few changes in personnel and a few French adjectives, the Stoke team had the wind and sun on their backsides along with the coach's boot print.

Stoke woke up big time with long ranging tries to Sam Dempster, Brett Dickens, Woody, and two tries to Shawn Begg. Jacob Curtis made one conversion.

Just seeing the home crowd, which was pretty much the whole town, turn cold and bitterly quiet in the second half was almost as good as a win says manager Josh O’Connor.

But Stoke fell just short losing 29-27. “We'd like to say a

Top shooting helps College to netball win An almost perfect shooting display by Abbey Franklin paved the way for a 36-21 win for Nelson College for Girls 10A over Wanderers Phoenix.

The college team hit the ground running as it scored six of the first seven goals to issue a warning to the opposition. They had a handy 8-3 lead at the first break.

The second quarter was Nelson’s most productive when it outscored the more experienced Wanderers 14-6. Although College won the third stanza 8-6, the spoils were shared six apiece in the final period. Nelson College returned an impressive 85 per cent goal average.

Abbey played goal attack for the first half and goal shoot for the third quarter before displaying her versatility when she moved to goal keep in the final quarter (where she pulled in two well time intercepts). She was a great target in the offensive circle and was content in spearheading the attack. Abbey converted 19 from 20 for an 85 per cent average – her only miss was rebounded for the second opportunity.

Abbey rotated the circle well and has a nice partnership with Ariana Wiremu, while Paige Woodhill ensured they had

quality ball with her precision feeds.

Nelson Girls have an abundance of talent within their ranks with Merekara McGuinniety a key member. She was the pivotal link at centre in the first half before taking over the goal defence bib in the second. Merekara was keen to hunt the ball to create the turnover and displayed amazing elevation to rebound strongly to deny Wanderers a second opportunity.

Mikaela Collier was well disciplined in the defensive circle, was instrumental in bringing the ball through court and was not afraid to let the ball go when she delivered a couple of “Joline Henry” passes directly to her shooters. Mikaela was also handy when she donned the GS bib in the final quarter to convert four from four.

Wanderers centre Vikki Johnston put in some quality feeds as well as applying considerable pressure through court. The mother/daughter combo of Denise and Chelsea Martin were more than handy on defence pulling in five intercepts between them.

Although goal shoot, Sue MacDonald was the dominant shooter she was willing to come out of the circle to get the ball.

Locals start well at races Around 3000 punters went through the gates on day one of the Nelson Harness Racing Club’s winter meeting at Richmond Park.

A rescheduled meeting saw the first day of races moved from Friday to Sunday as Christchurch horses were halted by the icy weather en route to Nelson. One hundred of the 177 nominations were coming via Christchurch.

A chill was still there on Sunday but entrants were treated to some early success by two local horses. Bill Morgan’s Colonel Custard ridden by Murray Pash finished the Cavalier Trotting Products/ Atomic Travel 2400m Pace in fourth place while Robert Stuart’s Jass, also ridden by Murray, ran

third in the Golden Girls Series 1609m Mobile Pace.

Harness Racing Club president John McKenzie was “very happy” with the public’s response despite the rescheduling. “A lot of people had probably arranged to take time off work on the Friday but it’s one of those things. I think we did the right thing postponing the event.” There was a $107,000 turnover on Sunday, around $3000 down from last year. Day two was scheduled to begin at 10.30am today.

Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club Now that winter is definitely upon us, the best place to catch fish is at D’urville Island. The guys in the club that have been going down most weekends have reported good numbers of kingfish, snapper, blue cod and other species.

Unfortunately they wouldn’t divulge exactly where these fish were but said that they would be more than happy to share some of these spots to any newcomers to the club next season. Sounds like a good reason to join the club.

This week we looking at how to target kingfish with jigs, which is an exciting way to feel the power of one of the most sought-after game fish in New Zealand. You need good gear to consistently catch them. I recommend Jigging Master (JM) and Jigstar fishing gear that can be brought at your local fishing tackle retailer.
