Total available is just $144,700 More than 100 community groups are vying for a slice of the Nelson City Council’s community assistance fund but with a current pool of just $144,700 many will find themselves disappointed. Councillors this afternoon finished hearing from more than 20 community groups which chose to speak in support of their application but they were just a fraction of the 105 applications asking for a total of $571,101. Already the council is in contract to fund $485,300 to various community groups, leaving just $144,700. Applications ranged from $1000 for a new dishwasher to $7350 to run a Maori arts festival with the highest application from House 44 in Stoke which requested $46,000 for staff costs for a Tane group and extension of St Barnabas Church youth programme. The applications were rated by
staff and then put to councillors to decide who gets what. Many of the recommendations included giving just part of the amount requested. Wedding with a twist
Julia and Brent Lines had a few more turned heads than your usual bride and groom on Saturday, but they were fully expecting it. The Stoke couple had a “medieval themed wedding” with guests getting right into the spirit and dressing as knights, wizards and clergymen. They were expected to get married at Fairfield Park but rain put an end to that and they were wed at the Ocean Lodge, where the reception was held.

Julia says her husband came up with the idea of a medieval-themed wedding and she thought ‘why not?’ “It’s so wacky and so different but a bit of fun so I thought it would be great and we had a really good day.” She says they attracted plenty of car toots while having photos taken in the daffodils on Haven Rd. “It was great, there was no point getting embarrassed we just enjoyed it,” says Julia.
