Arts festival underway with colour and fun The Masked Parade set the Nelson Arts Festival off with a display of creativity, celebrating the theme Playful Pacifica in costumes and masks ranging from elaborate flights of Tui to a giant papier mache world teacup.

Central School won the Supreme Group Award with their whole school in mask and costume divided into sections of earth, water, fire and air.

The judges, Annabel Norman, Kath Bee, Darryl Frost and Gemma Laing say Central stood out for the overall impact of their entry. “It was striking, it fitted really well with the theme. It was a very powerful entry that had taken a lot of effort and it was great to see the whole school involved,” says Annabel.

The sound and light installation, Piki Mai, received a rapt response, even though it could not be seen to best effect for the crowds on the Church Steps where the images were projected. The imagery included war planes appearing to dive into the crowd from the steps, flames that engulfed the trees as Nelson’s first cathedral was burnt down and a rocket ship projection that made the cathedral tower appear to blast off. Piki Mai will play every night of the festival from dark until late, through to October 24.

“We will build our pedestrian boulevard along Rocks Rd as that is what our community wants, and as long as our community wants that, they are on notice for a considerable confrontation come March or April unless they [NZTA] concede earlier,” he says.

Aldo says the future of heavy traffic in Nelson is the Southern Arterial Rd, not Rocks Rd. “It is our community and the sooner NZTA realise there is no future for unsafe, heavy vehicles on Rocks Rd the better. The future alternate route for heavy traffic has already been decided by the council [and] by the community. For them to insist on continuing to spend millions of tax payers’ dollars on long-term unsustainable engineering solutions on a roading network, for the purpose of getting heavy traffic in an unsafe manner along our iconic scenic waterfront, when an independent international engineering specialist has condemned it, is incredibly short sighted, irresponsible and a wasteful misuse of tax payers money.”

Other projects for the remaining $16 million have not yet been finalised, says Aldo.

All Black cap finds its way home An All Black cap presented to a Nelson farmer in 1931 has found its way home, almost 40 years after his family thought it had been lost.

Former All Black and Nelson College student Donald Max, was handed the cap after his first test match against Australia in 1931.

When he died in 1972 his family distributed his All Blacks memorabilia, with the cap going to one of his two sons, Doug, who lived in the North Island.

Then, tragically, Doug died just five years after his father, in 1977, leaving the cap in the possession of his wife. The couple did not have any children and the widow remarried, holding onto the All Black cap.

The Max family did not know Doug had the cap and assumed it had gone missing, until this year, when his former wife passed away.

Her second family, not having any relationship with Donald Max, tracked down his 87 year-old son Gordon, who still lives in Brightwater, and handed it back to the family.

Gordon says it’s good to have his dad’s cap back where it belongs – for his family to cherish it and prolong the legacy left by the three-test All Black. “It means a lot, not so much for me, but for the family, because with all due respect to the present All Blacks, there was far more aura with the All Blacks back in the day,” says a thrilled Gordon.

Donald, a towering lock, played eight matches for the All Blacks and debuted against Australia in 1931. His first game was the final match that featured a scrum formation of 2-3-2.

He was used as a blind-side flanker after that and scored one test try, worth three points.

Back then, there were no reserves, only “emergency players”, that could only come on to the field if a doctor was present to sign a certificate for the injured player.

Gordon was six years-old at the time his father debuted in the black jersey, but he remembers it like it was yesterday. “After the football on the Saturday we had to light the copper and boil all the gear,” he says. “He had a lot of bandages and part of my job was, once the bandages had washed and dried, I would throw it out in front of me and roll them up for him.”

He also remembers watching his dad head off to Nelson rep practice at Trafalgar Park on his Harley Davidson motorbike and use the shed outside for catching practice with his brother.

“We had this big shed and he would practice his kicks by kicking over it.”

Donald broke his leg playing against Australia in 1934, which ended his first class career.

He then made the transition to refereeing and then on to administration where he became the president of the New Zealand Rugby Union in 1949.

Donald was the fourth inductee in the Nelson Sports Hall of Fame.

Thousands expected for Nelson Fanzone Nelson’s upper Trafalgar St is preparing to party this weekend as the city’s Fanzone goes up ahead of the Rugby World Cup semifinals.

A massive 20 foot by 10 foot screen mounted on top of a shipping container, guaranteeing a great view from all angles, will show both semi-finals and the final of the cup and will be erected between the Nelson Provincial Museum and ANZ Bank, projecting towards the Cathedral. It is expected thousands of people will pour into the Fanzone for the games – especially Sunday’s game featuring the All Blacks and Australia. The Fanzones in Wellington have proved so popular that they have been extended to include the semi-finals and the final, and organisers expect locals and visitors to embrace the Fanzone set up in Nelson too. “Having seen such a great turnout at each of our live games at Trafalgar Park, the Fanzones offer an opportunity to keep that buzz alive,” says Susan Coleman, RWC 2011 Nelson regional director. “It is the next best thing to being at a live game is to be amongst thou-

sands of other supporters.”

A selection of great local bands has been lined up to provide free pre-match entertainment from 6pm. DJ True Grit and The Peasants will wow the crowd on Saturday 15 October, followed by Comrade Z and The Immigrants on Sunday 16 October and Wicked Draw and Pacha Atma for the final on Sunday 23 October. The Twisty Twinz and Body in Space will top off the street entertainment. The rugby action begins with kick off at 9.00pm each evening.

Prior to the rugby there is plenty of time to enjoy a meal or drinks in one of the local cafes, restaurants and bars lining Trafalgar St. Fans can watch the game from outside one of the cafés or bars lining Trafalgar St, or find a spot inside the family-friendly environment of the Fanzone where a combination of seating and standing space will be on offer.

Alcohol is not allowed inside the Fanzone, says Susan.

The Fanzones close on final whistle, and Late Buses will be available to enable a safe journey home for fans.

GLASS ATTACK: A horrific bottle attack in a Nelson nightclub left a 21 year-old man getting glass pulled from his face in Nelson Hospital on Saturday morning.

The victim was bashed in the face with a full glass beer bottle in one of the worst attacks in a city bar for some time, say police.

Police are following “positive” lines of enquiry and expect it to be resolved quickly. The offender is understood to be an ex-Nelson man.

Young author brings back superhero

The adventures of Cool Dude, a superhero created by Stoke boy Matthew Harvey, are back in his new book.

Matthew has been writing books for years but 12 months ago published his first book called ‘Cool Dude’. He followed that up with its sequal and the detirmined Broadgreen student is already penning a third issue.

Isel Park blooms Isel Park was a blooming good place to be on Sunday, says festival goers, with the sun shining on the annual Isel in Bloom festival.

Set in four hectares of gardens and woodland park around Nelson’s historic Isel House, Isel in Bloom marks the re-opening of the house and gardens and is Nelson’s traditional herald of Spring.

There was a distinct herit-

age theme with ‘old English’ themes in music, fare and games.

People reclined in the sun to listen to mistrals in the afternoon once the excitement of the nail driving, bonnet trimming and musical chairs was passed. Others enjoyed a leisurely stroll as the sound of the Nelson City Brass Band boomed through the bloom.

Old glasses see new benefit Nelson’s used glasses are finding a second use, thanks to a local club and optometrist.

The Lioness Club of Nelson and Matthews Eyewear have teamed up to collect disused eyewear before testing them and then sending them to some of the Pacific’s poorest coun-

tries. There, volunteers fit the glasses with locals.

News of the accolades rapidly spread through Fashion Island, an aspect of the recognition Cindy was a little embarrassed by, but as soon as Fashion Island centre manager Susan Matz found out, she knew it was an achievement that should be celebrated.

“We are all very proud of her so it was important to celebrate that success.”

There is no underestimating the value of a strong team culture and Susan says the store’s clients would believe the national recognition was well deserved.

“Cindy and her team are a fabulous partnership in the store and they’ve been there right from day one. They have built up a good rapport with existing customers and they are just excellent with assisting new customers.”

A Nelson retail manager has won a national award, as the seasons best manager.

Cindy Crowther has been with the Witchery store in Fashion Island since it opened nearly four years ago and last week she, along with the store, was recognised nationally.

Cindy describes the three team members as a “tight-knit bunch of people”. You would have to be to win the ‘Team Culture’ award for the 21 Witchery stores nation-wide for Autum/ Winter 2011, she says.

Cindy won ‘Store Manager’ of the season judged by a combination of factors including customer feedback and satisfaction as well as sales.

Firefighters rise to the challenge

A few dozen fire fighters were all action at the A & P Showgrounds on the weekend for the annual Waterway Challenge.

Teams came to compete and hone their drills, but the speed and accuracy gained in competition also helps to save lives. “The Waterway Challenge involves all the skills you use as firefighter being run in a time-based competition, setting up hoses and knocking down targets,” says Craig Piner, Nelson Marlborough provincial association secretary.

It was a chance for the regions volunteers to test their skills in a bit of friendly competition. “You would think it might have been a bit of fun and people do enjoy it, but the competition does get quite serious,” Craig says.

Local glass business expands Don’t let the name fool you, Richmond Glass now has a shop in Nelson city.

The locally-owned glass company has been operating in Richmond for the past 20 years and for most of that time has served its Nelson customers from its Richmond base. But demand has now forced an expansion, with it opening a new store in Vanguard St, opposite Countdown.

Richmond Glass still has its headquarters on Gladstone Rd in Richmond but its new Nelson branch is in the premises vacated by Smith & Smith Glass. It opened its doors to the new store last Monday. Manager Wayne Ballis says the move has filled a gap in the Nelson market and will allow its technicians

to access its Nelson customers more easily.

“We are now the only glass business in Nelson city that offers all glass options, the others focus just on auto. But we do auto, houses, ballestrades, anything glass, we do it.”

Richmond Glass has built up a solid reputation and is one of the only glass businesses advertising a 24/7 service. “We are happy to do 24/7 and we are fully moblie. We are also the only bigger glass company that is locally owned.”

Wayne says people can also drop off their cars before work to get any glass work fixed and then walk to work in the CBD. “We’ve already found a heck of a lot of people take advantage of that,” he says.

Hyundai fastest growing automotive brand

Hyundai has been named the fastest growing automotive brand for the second year running, by global brand consultancy firm Interbrand.

This year saw the company rise four places to number 61 in the top 100 annual ranking of the world’s 100 best global brands.

Interbrand calculates rankings based on company balance sheets, marketing activities and each brand’s potential profit. The organisation said Hyundai “displayed the most memorable performance, continuing from the previous year, despite the growth slowdown of global brands”.

Hyundai’s brand value increased from US$3.5 billion in 2005 to US$6 billion in 2011.

“This award recognises the strong growth Hyundai continues to experience both at a local level in New Zealand and Internationally. It’s also an endorsement of Hyundai Motor Company’s new brand strategy launched in January 2011, and the fact that the company’s continued commitment to building ‘modern premium’ vehicles, is gaining traction,” says the Chief Operating Officer of Hyundai New Zealand, Tom Ruddenklau.

In New Zealand, sales of Hyundai vehicles are up 27 per cent compared to 2010, at a time when the overall New Zealand automotive industry grew by just 8.2 percent. In August, Hyundai New Zealand achieved the highest number of sales in its 29 year history, while internationally, Hyundai Motor Company was named the most improved car manufacturer of the last decade by UK based Auto Express.

Tom Ruddenklau says, it has been a great year for Hyundai New Zealand, and the brand’s popularity continues to go from strength to strength.

“We are confident that momentum will continue to grow as we gear up for the launch of the i40 Wagon and Veloster models later this year, adding to our range of well designed, economic, 5 star ANCAP safety rated vehicles.”

Tom says the recently launched Elantra was named AutoPacific’s Ideal Compact Vehicle in September, while the i45 was named the 2011 International Car of the Year.

Mayor reflects on first year in office This week Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio celebrates a year in the city’s top job. It has been a year dominated by talk of amalgamation, Rugby World Cup, transport issues and whether or not Nelson needs a performing arts centre. He speaks with Nelson Weekly editor Andrew Board about the year, the ups, the downs and how he rates his own performance.

Nelson Weekly: A year ago you won the support of Nelsonians on several key campaign promises; affordable council, economic development, putting Nelson on the map, and educational training. Do you think you’ve kept those promises?

Aldo Miccio: Yes, we’ve tackled them all. Affordable council was one of the big ones, and we achieved that with the lowest rate increase in years. It was a combination of taking some things out of the plan, things that weren’t a priority for this council. There was also efficiency gains in council itself and some cost cuttings.

increase], if you include the theatre, down to three percent, so it was a big drop. Economic development is one we are working on, we have set up the Economic Development Committee, to look at how economic development is spent. It gives it a real focus, before it was just a by-product of what council did.

NW: How would you rate your overall performance for your first year in the job?

AM: Seven and a half. And this time next year I want to be nine and a half. There has been learning curves, when you’re in the hot seat there is a lot more to learn,I’ll always be learning but the bulk of that is done.

NW: What has been the biggest lesson you learnt from your first year?

AM: You’re never going to please everyone.

If I can reflect the view of 70 to 80 percent of Nelsonians I’ve just got to punch ahead, regardless of the noisy 20 percent.

NW: You pushed hard to bring the Rugby World Cup to Nelson. Why, and are you happy with how the city hosted it?

AM: Rugby World Cup was about putting Nelson on the map and almost a catalyst in confidence; I think Nelson has lacked a bit of confidence in itself over the past 10 to 15 years. There is a lot of confidence and selfbelief in the community now, because we were able to deliver on that international stage. We stepped up and did a great job of hosting such a big event and we are on the

NW: What are you goals for the next two years of your term as mayor?

AM: Education is one we are working through now with NMIT and the colleges which is good. We are also working on our FIFA under 20 world cup bid, that has even more exposure than the Rugby World Cup. I’d like to see an events and marketing branch of council, working together with the community to market our facilities; a boardwalk along Rocks Rd is a must, I want to see an extension of free car parking to run all year on Tuesday’s and continue transparency.

We are the only council in New Zealand that does our annual plan in public, no other does that.

SPORT Cricket season takes off Defending two-day champions Stoke/Nayland got off to a flying start in the opening round of the season.

Ryan says it was a great way to start the season and was particularly happy with how the two new arrivals had eased into the squad, after Waimea College folded as a senior team. “We were pretty impressed with how the boys bowled, especially the two news boys, Connor and Marty,” he says.

“They were outstanding. Connor is a pretty good signings for us. He seems to get on pretty well with the boys too, which is good.”

G Force and Otnip take race two honours Twenty seven yachts lined up last Wednesday night, racing in a gusty easterly breeze for race two of the Vining Ship Brokers Spring Series.

The 15 division one boats started five minutes ahead of the 12 division two boats Blackout (Noel Eichbaum) lead the div one fleet out the entrance but was soon overtaken by the Catamaran G Force (Grant Hilton) enjoying the strong gusts and flat water.

G Force was first back into the harbour finishing 17 minutes ahead of Blackout in second with Wild Oats (Robert Greenwood) only 36 seconds behind Blackout in third.

First on handicap was G Force.

Division two once again saw the five bigger boats of Kakariki (Chris Nieman), South Seas Clipper (John Cotton), Wind Dancer (Lindsey Duff) and Dardanelle (Mike Cotton) fighting it out up front.

But the fickle wind and outgoing tide in the harbour entrance slowed their progress, letting sixth and seventh placed boats Svaap (Geoff Combes) and one of the smallest boats in the fleet, Otnip (Mark Bishop) sneak up close to No 1 beacon, with Otnip taking the gun at the finish line at Nelson Yacht Club.

First on handicap was Otnip.

Plenty of runs for softballers Softball is in full swing now and despite wet and chilly conditions on Saturday, the Premier A Women were heating up the competition with a round of double headers.

Royals xtRreme were the pick of the bunch at the Saxton Diamond, collecting two very important victories, the first coming against a well-skilled Stoke Eagles side 14-13. Stoke had previously lead with 11 runs in just the first two innings, including a home run to Rachel Knowles.

Masters in town Coming Soon Half of the athletes registered for the South Island Masters Games next weekend are from the Nelson region, which is well above expectations, says games director Chris Thomas.

The South Island Masters Games 2011 is being held in Nelson for the first time, from 15 – 23 October. This year, 3,000 athletes aged over 30 years-old will compete across 50 sports in-front of more than 1,500 spectators, making it one of the largest participation events in the South Island.

Chris says he is thrilled at how Nelson has got behind the games.

“We had an expectation of around 1000 competitors to come from the Nelson re-

gion, so we are really impressed that Nelson registrations have exceeded 1500,” Thomas says. “The vast majority are from central Nelson suburbs, but we also have more than 300 from the wider Tasman region, including a group coming over from Golden Bay. “Nelson is really taking ownership of the games, which is very important for the success of an event like this,” he says.

“Building on Nelson’s brilliant performance as a Rugby World Cup host city, the Nelson region will have a chance to shine again nationally and internationally, to hopefully cement itself as one of the main places for masters athletes from around the world to come to.”
