Fight urged over Aussie ban

As Australian supermarkets step up their ban of New Zealand made food, there have been calls for kiwis to join the fight and boycott Aussie-owned businesses. Australia’s two major supermarket chains have caused a stir in New Zealand for banning NZ foods in a “Buy Australian Made” campaign. The move could hurt Nelson companies that export food such as the apple, seafood and frozen food industries and has sparked anger across the country with campaigns

already underway to boycott Countdown supermarket, which is owned by Woolworths, one of the supermarket chains involved in taking kiwi food off their shelves. Food and Grocery Council chief executive Katherine Rich told the New Zealand Herald over the weekend that Nelson frozen food producer Talleys has had 40 products removed from shelves and replaced by Australian products. Suppliers also discontinued 10 Talleys products, despite the fact that local suppliers could not replace

Classic personalities at classic boat show

“It’s not always about the boats, it’s sometimes about the personalities and the stories behind them,” organiser Pete Rainey says, as two men wearing Thunderbirds uniforms stroll past, confirming his statement almost to a tee. As far as entrants go at the New Zealand Antique and Classic Boat Show, the Thunderbirds easily stole the show, even if their 15 foot jet boat wasn’t the oldest, most valuable or necessarily most eye-catching. But what was eye-catching was their theme, which certainly grabbed the attention of the eventgoers at the weekend’s 15th annual show at Lake Rotoiti, with many lining up to take photographs and others content just to chuckle away on the shore. Christchurch man Ed Wicken only finished restoring the 41 year old fully-functioning jet boat a few months ago. Upon it’s completion the name Thunderbird was given to it, and scribed in the same font used in the logo of the 60s television show. Ed has been a regular at the NZ Antique and Classic

Fresh Choice Richmond owner Gary Watson says as a supermarket owner he definitely likes to support locals where he can but it’s also based on quality. “I like to support local too but I think it’s tough when they’re kicking our products just because they’re playing a marketing game, not necessarily looking after the customers. It’s more a marketing position rather than product selection by the sounds of things.” Several local business owners told Nelson Weekly locals should do the same and boycott Australian-owned businesses in Nelson – which include Bunnings, Countdown, K-

Mart, the Nelson Mail and Leader newspapers and of course the four major banks. Hogeys Surf store owner John Hogey says he’s been following the ban with interest and says he’d jump on board and support the boycott of Nelson’s Australian-owned companies. He says the ban of Nelson brands such as Talleys in Australia would have a negative effect here and people would reap more benefits spending their money locally than with “Aussie chain stores”. “I think a boycott would be fantastic, it would be really cool coming into winter. It’s so true that if people spend their money locally, it does stay in the community.” Michael Talley is reported to back a formal complaint under the CER agreement and said his company had already provided a legal opinion to the Government. Labour Party food safety spokesman Damien O’Connor says New Zealand should intro-

duce country of origin labelling so that New Zealanders could know if they were buying Australian products and “return the sentiment”. A Facebook page has been set up to urge people to boycott shopping at Countdown, it has almost 1000 likes but opinion was divided among users of the Nelson Weekly Facebook page. “I think Australia is going nuts. What happened to freedom of choice! They seem very anti NZ. They will go downhill fast the way it’s going,” wrote Marie Allen. Blair Jelley said: “Dirty Ozzies worried that the kiwi food is selling better to all the expat kiwis. Best quality comes from NZ!” But others were more considered. “Boycott? No. Local over imported? Yes,” wrote James Gordon Ramsay. While Rebekah Joy wrote: “Let them be petty, we don’t need to be.”

Winning races is nothing new for former Olympic cyclist Chris Nicholson. But last Thursday his victory in the annual Waitangi Day Lakes to Sea race was just a little bit special. It was the veteran Nelson cyclist’s first win since getting back on his bike after suffering from a potentially fatal cardiac arrest only four months earlier. Chris, 46, finished the 80 kilometre Avanti Plus Richmondsponsored ride from Lake Rotoiti near St Arnaud to Rabbit Island in just 1 hour 57 minutes and 44 seconds, outsprinting young riders Jason Thomsen and Cameron Ford in a three-way finish. After the race he joked that he “should get the most improved rider award because I went from dead to A grade in four months”, but then quickly conceded that his cardiac arrest was no joking matter. “I was sitting at my desk at work and my heart started going nuts. Boat Show over the past ten years, previously entering another boat called Miss Isle, named after Isle House which his grand parents used to own. But he decided to do something new in 2014. “I named it Thunderbird and I thought here was my chance to do something a bit different this year. We just picked up some of the outfits from a costume shop down the road in Christchurch,” he says. About 120 clinkers, steam launches, classic motorboats and sailing dinghies took to the lake over the two day boat show. And while there were half a dozen faultless US-imported Chris Craft boats making most envious, the show is often known for bringing out the weird, whacky and wonderful in classic boating too. More schools bring in big classrooms Another Nelson primary school is introducing a “modern learning environment” where multiple teachers can teach around 50-60 students in the one open facility. It appears the days of having one teacher standing at the front of a classroom with 20-30 kids could be soon over, as more schools jump on the initiative. This has already been happening at Hampden St School for a year, but in 2014 Tahunanui School and Wakefield School will have modern learning environments for their Year 5 and 6 students as well – however, Tahunanui School’s will be slightly different as the walls in classrooms 8, 9 and 10 are for weight bearing and need to remain. A modern learning environment gives teachers the ability to combine classes into one for teamteaching, split a class into small groups and spread them over a wider area or combine different classes studying in complementary learning areas. They traditionally have fewer walls, more glass and use the idea of a hub which is the central teaching space. If schools wish to construct a new building or modernize a current one, they need to meet the Ministry of Education’s new guidelines and requirements around teaching. Tahunanui School principal Paul Drummond says that one teacher will still have a “home room” of around 20 children which they are responsible for, but the main benefit of the modern learning environment is that the children can access expertise of the other

staff too. “There will still be subject areas, there will still be necessity for timetables, it just means the space will be able to encourage greater collaboration between teacher and student,” he says. Hampden St School principal Don McLean labeled it as “brilliant” and says his students have “flourished” during the past year. He was now looking at other ways it could be used throughout the school. “The big thing for us is behaviour vastly improved last year, reported bad behaviour was down 35 per cent midway through the year and by the end of it I’d say it would’ve been down by 50 per cent,” he says. “The kids are more engaged at school, they’re happy and they’re excited about being in their classrooms. We were waiting for the novelty to wear off but it never did.” Paul believes teachers can utilize their strengths under this new initiative which he says is there to drive the students. However, some parents are still to be convinced. “Why would our classroom want to look like it did 100 years ago? A lot has changed in that time. The type of teaching where you’d have one teacher standing at the front of the classroom is happening less and less and we should be encouraging that. A modern classroom will not see everyone on the same furniture doing the same thing at the same time and this space compliments that change in learning.”

Big crowd turns out for Crusaders

They came, they saw, they got drenched. But judging from the smiles of the 5500 fans at Sportspark Motueka on Friday night, they were also thrilled. The Crusaders beat the Highlanders 28-15 in a preseason Super 15 game in Motukea and a big crowd braved the rain to watch some of the

world’s best players in action. Organiser Shane Drummond says the poor weather kept thousands away but strong presales saved them. “The walk up crowd was minimal, whereas the other games in Motueka have been massive. We were very lucky we had so many tickets pre-

Nurse falls 10 metres onto animal bones Your Community Newspaper

When she fell down a 10m deep sinkhole and landing on the remains of dead animals, Jill Clendon’s first thoughts focused on whether she had broken any bones. After discovering a few cuts and bruises, she turned her attention to what she was sitting on. “There was definitely a small cow, so maybe a calf and a sheep and wetas and stuff like that. They were well dead, mainly just bones. It wasn’t too bad, it was just cold - really, really cold.” The Nelson nurse had been out on Takaka Hill, near the Ngarua Caves last week, checking out a course for an orienteering event when she came across the sinkhole, which was much larger than she thought. “We found this site where we were planning to put a (orienteering) control so went down to put my little tag there and lo and behold it turned into a bit bigger than a little depression.” The 44-year-old fell suddenly and couldn’t grab anything to hold on to. “I fell straight into the hole and screamed,” she said soon after her rescue. Her friend Karen Monahan walked on ahead unaware of what

I don’t know if she heard me scream or not, but she came back to look for me and heard me down there, so it’s lucky I wasn’t knocked out.” Jill checked herself for injuries and was amazed she wasn’t badly hurt. “I’m really lucky. I got a good bash to the head and some cuts and scrapes and bruises, but otherwise I’m all good.” Jill was carrying a personal locator beacon in her backpack and set it off, and then put on some warm clothes. And while she waited for help, she bandaged her knee. Leo Viersma was one of six cavers who came to her rescue and it took about 20 minutes to get her out.

Love comes second, census shows The latest results from the 2013 census show that Nelson has the highest proportion of divorced, separated, or widowed people in New Zealand. The census regional summary tables released last week, gives an interesting impression of the Nelson region and its districts says census general manager Sarah Minson. “For instance, in the 2013 census, 21.4 per cent of the adult Nelson population said they were separated,

divorced, or widowed. That’s the highest proportion in the country and compares with 17.0 percent nationally. At the same time, Nelson was one of the few regions to record an increase in the proportion of married people, which rose slightly from 47.1 percent to 47.2 percent of the adult population,” she says. The census results also show a 24.2 per cent drop in the number of smokers in the region, especially in the number of teenage

smokers, with 1527 fewer people aged 15 years or over smoking regularly since 2006. The proportion of regular smokers in the region has gone from 19.6 per cent of the adult population in 2006, to 13.8 per cent last year. Among people aged 15–19 years the change has been particularly significant, with a 49.2 per cent drop in the number of regular smokers since 2006. In last year’s census, 11.2 per cent of Nelson residents in

this age group reported smoking regularly, down from 19.3 percent in 2006 – a decrease of 273 people. “This local breakdown of census information is some of the most important, as it will help communities and service providers plan for the future,” says Sarah. “Providers of local services such as health, education, community, and recreational facilities can use census data to form a picture of the region.”

Free car show pulls the punters The Nelson Car Show celebrated it’s 10th year anniversary with a successful show held over the weekend. This year the event went back to basics with a one day show, and wiped the prize slate clean in favour of an overall winner. It was also held at a larger venue and was free for the public to view for the first time. Cars of all makes and motors parked up at the Tahunanui Reserve for the day and organisers say more than 150 cars were on display, not including those who did not register and just came along

on the day. Co-organiser Karl Tompson says the group were incredibly pleased with the way the show turned out, with a perfect sunny day and free entry to the event being the highlights. “Also the grassroots, one day approach made it a very relaxed kind of show. We wanted to keep it very family friendly. Victory's big little day out It's official, Victory's Little Day Out is not so little any more. The event received great support this year with a steady crowd throughout the day. The 'Little Day Out' event is put on by the Victory Community Association. The festival is held annually and is free, with an emphasis on live local music, activities for the whole family and a chance to get creative with interactive activities. VCA coordinator Trish Walshe says the event was fantastic and achieved all of the things the group set out to. "We have a very diverse range of cultures in our

community, and our aim was to bring them together and down to the park to enjoy it." The event was themed "Make some Noise" which saw the public use handmade instruments to help Victory try to set a record as Nelson's first amateur trash percussion ensemble using recycled instruments. While it is not yet known if they've set the record, Trish says it was a success in that many people participated in the event. "The kids were just having a ball, being really creative. It was good to have a theme, that involved the whole family. It sounded amazing."

Retiring after 50 years at freezing works One of the Nelson freezing works longest serving employees admits “it’s going to feel strange for a while” after retiring following 50 consecutive seasons at the Stoke plant. Owen Hannah spent his last day at the Alliance Group’s plant on Main Rd Stoke after starting work at the then Nelson Freezing Company works in 1963. It was his second job after leaving Nelson College and working at McKay’s department store on Bridge St for a year, and Owen says he remembers his first day at the works like it was yesterday. “My father (Jim) worked as a supervisor on the slaughter board so he got me a job there. I remember my first day stamping lamb carcasses in the cold store and tying on grading tickets - it was very physical work, it was hard yakka.” Owen subsequently worked in the beef house in the old plant before making a move to the mutton chain in 1972. The 66-year-old has witnessed a lot of changes in the industry over the last half century, including the move to the new modern plant in October 2000 and the introduction of strict hygiene regulations. “When I started all the slaughtermen wore black woollen singlets and khaki pants and we worked with woodenhandled knives in old wooden buildings. Now there’s stainless steel everywhere and we all wear white and have to scrub and sanitise everytime we start work. “We also used to do a lot more by hand

before all the mechanisation came in. Some of it was really hard too - the pelting was probably the hardest.” Despite half a century of 6am starts and long, hard 10-hours days Owen says he has enjoyed his time at the freezing works. “I have done every job on the chain which has been interesting and I like the people I work with. It’s been the comradeship here that has been the best part of the job. “We always help each other out. You are part of as team.” Plant manager Terry Kreft says Owen has been a valuable staff member over the years and is one of a select group of dedicated, long-serving employees. “We have a few of them who have 30 years plus and one or two like Owen who have done 50 years. Doug Scowen has already done 50 years and he’s still going but they don’t make them like Owen and Doug anymore.” Now that Owen has retired he plans to spend more time gardening and catching up on jobs around the house. Travel is also on the agenda, although he will have to wait until his wife Lorraine retires from her job at Westmeats where she has worked for 43 years. But according to Lorraine there is one thing won’t change now that Owen has hung up his white gumboots. “He’s always cooked tea because he started so early and knocked off before me so I don’t expect that to change,” Lorraine says.

Police Fishing ponds now open to the public report

For the month of January we had a road policing operation under way called Operation Alert to coincide with the increasing numbers of holiday makers travelling in and out of the area. We wanted to make sure that drivers making long journeys were taking adequate breaks to remain alert on the road. As always with road policing we were keeping an eye on speed and alcohol as well. Our officers were patrolling as far afield as Springs Junction and some of the driving they encountered was frightening. One driver passed a speed camera at 194 km/h. He was located by a patrol further down the road and had his licence taken off him on the spot. A number of drivers were found to be travelling in excess of 150 km/h. Those speeds are downright dangerous and any driver caught driving more than 40kn/h in excess of the posted speed limit is subject to an instant roadside suspension. So, if you’re caught doing that sort of speed around Springs Junction getting to your intended destination could be a problem because you won’t be driving anywhere. Naturally there’s a court appearance and a fairly hefty fine to go along with that. But really, that’s getting off lightly. The chances of something going wrong at those sorts of excessive speeds could leave you facing a lifetime of knowing you had taken another person’s life away. In total officers issued more than 6000 infringement notices during this operation and the vast majority were for speed. It’s disappointing for me that the message just doesn’t seem to be getting through to slow down. Now that most people are back at work and the kids are back at school that message is more important than ever. Please, if you do one thing on the roads this year, make the commitment to slow down around schools.

Appleby’s fishing ponds are open to fish without a guide for just a few weeks. The trust which established the ponds in 2012 for children to learn the skills of fishing, has only allowed fishing for children on pre-arranged “fish out” days in the past year. At these “fish out” days the trust provides fishing gear for the children and guides to help them catch fish. A spokesman for the trust says there were still fish remaining in the ponds and as the area around the ponds was becoming more established. It was now well suited for family visits and they would be open

until March 31. But fishers must be between the ages of 6 and 16 and are only allowed to catch one fish per day. They must also have their own equipment and be supervised by adults. He says that recent fishing days had been very successful but there were still a fair number of fish remaining in the ponds and fishing conditions became difficult towards the middle of the day as the fish tried to avoid the sunny conditions. But the mornings and evenings were very productive. “We wanted to give families the

opportunity to take a picnic and go fishing in the evening,” he says. “It will also provide a good outdoor experience for kids with parents on the weekends.” Fishing has been good at the ponds with the majority of children catching fish over recent weeks. The ponds are stocked with trout provided by the trust and salmon grown by NMIT aquaculture students. People using the ponds will need to get a special licence from Fish and Game. This can be obtained over the phone 544 6382.

More than $11,000 has already been raised for Ranui House in Christchurch, and Peter and Lynda Hanna hope the next fundraiser will be another huge success. The Hope couple have organised an Ambrose Golf Tournament at Greenacres Golf Club on Friday March 21. The entry fee is $80 per team of four, or $20 per person, and the money raised will go towards Ranui House, a housing unit for friends and family of patients at Christchurch Hospital. Last year Peter and Lynda received the news that Lynda had acute leukemia and was flown to the bone marrow transplant unit for treatment of chemotherapy. While there, Peter was able to stay at Ranui House for three months, with Lynda also

gone about raising money to help Ranui House which is in need of a structural upgrade. Already two fundraisers down – which included a charity concert and a charity hangi – Lynda was thrilled with the amount raised. “We’re delighted, absolutely delighted,” she says. “We’ve made $11,000 for Ranui House already and we’re hoping to raise $25,000. The support from the community has just been great.” A keen golfer, Peter says the idea of holding a charity tournament was the first he came up with when planning the fundraising efforts. Iron Maori gets blood pumping The first Iron Maori triathlon to be held in the South Island attracted around 140 people in Stoke on Saturday and was a “beautiful day”, say organisers. Luke Katu says entrants travelled from as far away as Christchurch and Hawkes Bay to make up the field. “The focus from the onset was about completing the race, just actually getting out there and participating in the event. It was about encouraging family participation, in some cases towards the end there, whanau would get out there and walk with others to the finish, it was brilliant.” There were two courses, a short course and a long course. The short course was

a 300m swim, 10km cycle and a 2.5 km walk/run, while the long course was a 600m swim, 20km cycle and 5km walk/ run. “People stayed right up until the end and cheered last person through. They just let out a huge cheer for the last person, everyone there was just so positive and supportive, it was a great day,” says Luke. He says there was a Kaumatua who participated in a team event who was 86. “He participated in the short event in a team and did the walk, which was brilliant.” Luke says no doubt about it, the event will be coming back next year.

• We saw a great deal of shipping this week with containers logs and fishing vessels all being part of the action. What was also exciting to many was to see the large cruise ship Seabourn Sojourn in for a day. The passengers that went ashore were noted to have remarked that Port Nelson was also the friendliest place they have visited on their tour. • A super yacht tied up on the Super Yacht berth for almost a week and is now on its way to tour Fiordland. We hope there will be many more of them. • The crazies are still out there and sometimes we are at a loss as to what to do for them as it is impossible to legislate for foolishness or recklessness unless the legislation is punitive. I have even received an encouraging letter recently, unsigned and no return address but thank you for your support. • On a brighter note I was called by the police during Waitangi day to assist a boat in distress in the middle of the bay. I happened to be in the Apple Shed restaurant in Mapua enjoying a superb lunch when we received the call a boat had broken down and was drifting toward the Ruby Bay Bluffs. I took the time to enjoy my lunch whilst we waited for the Harbour Master’s vessel to get to us. Sadly the Coastguard were temporarily out of action. • It was great to see that this boatie had done everything he could for the safety and the comfort of his passengers. A sea anchor had been deployed to slow down the rate of drift. This also helped keep the ship’s bow into the seaway improving the comfort of the ride. All the passengers had lifejackets on and were warm and safe. Perhaps the skipper had one on as well?? There were two forms of communication and the skipper had a spanner as a tool kit. • When we hooked up the battery the engine started straight away with a siren and a roar. I can hardly blame the crew for turning it off again straight away (much to the surprise of many) as it was a piercing whistle. With a turn of the key they were away again and the whistle faded away as the alternator kicked in. It’s always a pleasure to do something for the police.

Nayland College out of Press Cup: Not surprising, from the only high school in Nelson with a declining school role. Couldn't field an U14 side either last year which doesn't bode well for the future. Sadly for Nayland College they were left with no alternative. Respect for the guys who fronted up each week and the supporters. Mark French. Was a bad decision to go into the Press Cup in the first place. Theo Moore. It is a good decision. They do have really good sides but having one competetive side out of 5 or 6 just is not enough. I did send the Nelson City Council some photos and details of the portable dugouts that are provided for all sports at the Showgrounds in Palmerston North. The cost to build these dugouts was very minimal when compared with what has been spent on so called artwork around the northern approaches to the city. It seems the sports bodies using the park may have to plead a case for such protection from the weather and I am sure a sponsor could be found. All we need is the council to be a bit pro-active in this, and by the time the mighty “Makos” embark on their premiership campaign the shelters just might be a reality. Errol Millar.
