Once again, it’s tough for me to say “Happy Spring!” as it is currently snowing outside. If you happen to be newer to the area, welcome to Kentucky. But just know, even for us, this season is a little off. Usually by now we’re basking in either sunshine or rain on a regular basis. For that reason, May happens to be Skin Cancer Awareness Month. It usually is appropriate as we start getting our shorts out and our swim suits ready. Hopefully, by the time you get this in early May, we won’t have seen snow on the ground again. Not that I don’t love it– I’m not one to complain about the weather, but I will admit that I’m ready for a little bit of consistency.

Please be sure to check out the upcoming events– especially those on page 3. We here at the office have a lot to be celebrating this month and we want you to join us! On May 1, our new 4-H agent (don’t worry, Danielle is still here. This position was added to help the 4-H program in this county grow even larger!) will begin his work. We will be hosting a reception for him that same evening to let him know how excited we are to have him. He’s not from the county (or even the state) and we want him to know that Nelson County is the best and friendliest! Those of us working here already know that, and May 1st is your chance to prove it to Luke.

Our other big event is on May 8. That is Cooperative Extension’s 100th birthday and we want to invite you to celebrate with us! We’ll be having a cook out from 11-2 that day and we’ll be displaying pieces of Extension history here in county. Come out and have lunch on us! Invite everyone you know!

Playing It Safe In the Sun In the summer people are outdoors more enjoying a variety of sports and recreational activities and should protect themselves from the summer sun and heat as much as possible. Exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UV) can be harmful to the skin, and may cause skin cancer. Overexposure to heat and high temperatures may also lead to heat exhaustion or stroke. Here are some ways you can protect yourself from too much sun:    



   

   

Limit sun exposure between the hours of 10 a.m-4 p.m., when the sun is the strongest.

Wear loose-fitting protective clothing with long sleeves and long pants made of a tightly woven fabric.

Wear a wide-brimmed hat to protect the face, neck, and ears.

If you engage in water sports wear a rash guard, which is an athletic shirt made of spandex and nylon or polyester. Rash guards protect against chafe and some provide protection from ultraviolet rays.

Apply about a palm full of sunscreen with protection factor (SPF) 15 or higher to dry skin 30 minutes before going out into the sun. Reapply sunscreen liberally every two hours or more often if participating in water sports.

Reduce the risk of dehydration by drinking plenty of water on hot days. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty. Keep a water bottle close at hand and drink often.

Some medications increase your sensitivity to the sun. Be sure to check with your doctor about the medications you are taking and exposure to the sun.

Conditions such as age, obesity, fever, dehydration, heart disease, mental illness, poor circulation, excessive sunburn, prescription drugs and alcohol can all increase heat stress on the body.

Elderly people, infants, young children and people with chronic medical conditions are more sensitive to excessive heat and heat stress. Sensitive people should limit their time in direct sun and should seek shade and air-conditioned indoors spaces during the hottest part of the day.

Be sensible about the amount of time you spend in the sun. Avoid over-exposure that will result in sunburned skin.

If you become sunburned, calm skin irritation and heat by taking cool baths then applying a moisturizing skin cream that contains aloe.

Avoid heavy meals that can add stress to your body.

If you feel light-headed, confused, weak or faint, you should seek a cool place immediately and get help.

These symptoms could be signs of heat exhaustion or even heat stroke, both of which can be serious medical conditions.

Whatever you call it come learn some new recipes that treat at each will WOW your family this Thanksgiving. one!

December 18— National Fruitcake Month-- Come learn some tips, tricks, and techniques on making fruitcake (and other cakes) as well as some basic cake decorating.

Strawberry Trifle May 2014 Food and Nutrition Calendar recipe

Ingredients 1 ready made angel food cake 1 (1.5 ounce) box sugar and fat free instant vanilla pudding and pie filling 3 cups skim milk 1 (8 ounce) container low fat yogurt 2 cups fresh strawberries

Makes 12 servings Serving Size: 1 cup

Cooking Instructions 1.

Mix instant pudding with milk. Let stand 5 minutes until set. Add yogurt, Stir until smooth.

2.

Cute angel food cake into bite size pieces. Place one third of cake into trifle bowl or any large clear glass bowl. Layer with one third of pudding mixture, followed by one third of strawberries. Repeat with remaining ingredients.

3.

Cover and let stand in refrigerator 6 hours or overnight.

Playdates will take place on

the last Thursday of the month and will include snacks and drinks.

Come talk with other parents who are going through the same experiences as you, and get out of the house for a bit! Kids will have a lesson each month, and parents will take home some great information each month. But while you’re here—just laugh and play!

Even if the sun isn’t bright or hot, you need to protect your skin! Wear sunglasses, sunscreen and hats to protect your skin and eyes from the sun’s harmful rays. Never stay in the sun too long. Go inside for a break to cool off and drink lots of water.
