Experience the pleasure and excitement of traveling through mid-19th-century France. From Paris to the countryside, the top of Mont Blanc to the Mediterranean, this exhibition features 125 important paintings and photographs, from 36 major museums.

This exhibition has been co-organized by The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and Saint Louis Art Museum. Support is provided by the Hall Family Foundation, Marion and Henry Bloch, Barton P. and Mary D. Gérôme and the Lure of the Orient February 5–July 20, 2014 | Gallery P30 Best known for his Orientalist paintings, Jean-Léon Gérôme skillfully combined reality with fantasy to create seductive visions of distant people and places. This focus exhibition brings together four outstanding paintings by Gérôme and a selection of Turkish, Arabian and European decorative objects that explore the intersection of East and West.

FREE EXHIBITIONS History & Hope: Celebrating the Civil Rights Movement Through May 18, 2014 | Gallery 214 Created in collaboration with the American Jazz Museum and the Black Archives of Mid-America, this intimate exhibition celebrates the 50th anniversary of the 1963 March on Washington and the 1964 signing of the Civil Rights Act. Showcasing the work of artists and musicians who were pivotal in the struggle for human equality and racial harmony, the show includes labels with personal responses by Kansas City artists, musicians and activists.

F OR ADU L TS AGES 16 AND OLDER WORKING WITH PASTELS 1:30–4 p.m. | Fridays, January 17–February 21 $126/$144/$180 Instructor: Sarah Bracco The pastels of Edgar Degas and the French Impressionist painters will be among your inspirations for this class. Discover the fresh quality pastels have to offer as you learn about the materials, tools and techniques of this versatile medium. Special attention will be given to layering color, simplification, composition and developing a personal approach to color.

DRAWING: THE COMFORT ZONE 10 a.m.–Noon | Saturdays, January 18–March 8 $96/$120/$150 Instructor: Suzann Geringer Designed for adults with minimal-to-no drawing experience, this class will develop your skills of looking carefully and translating what you see onto the page. We’ll keep it simple, focusing on the basic elements of drawing and having fun with the experience!

MIX IT UP WITH WATERCOLOR 1:30–4 p.m. | Saturdays, January 18–March 8 $126/$144/$180 Instructor: Christine Webster It’s time to mix it up! Combine watercolor with other media such as charcoal, collage, pen & ink and pastels. Be inspired by the museum collection, while strengthening your knowledge of composition, color and watercolor techniques both traditional and experimental.

PRINTS: INSPIRED BY THE FIGURE 1:30–4 p.m. | Saturdays, January 18–February 8 $84/$96/$120 Instructor: Suzann Geringer Practice creating prints with the human figure as the subject. Explore the processes of monotype, monoprint and dry point printmaking, drawing ideas from the exhibition The Naked and the Nude: Representations of the Body and other art featuring the figure.

IT’S TOO SURREAL 6–8 p.m. | Thursdays, January 23–February 6 $52.50/$60/$75 Instructor: Joleen Goff Delve into dreams and the subconscious mind by seeing and learning about the art of the Surrealists. Create an expressive threedimensional dreamscape with lots of fun discussion included! Purchase a drink at Happy Hour in Bloch Lobby first and bring it to class if you’d like.

FRIDAYNIGHTFUN THE BEETLES Ages 6–12 with adult 6:30–8:30 p.m. | Friday, January 17 $35/$40/$50 per adult-child pair Hunt for beetles—the symbolic scarab representing the sun and magical rebirth—in ancient Egyptian art and create one of your own in clay.

Participants will glaze and leave their work to be fired. Finished pieces will be available for pick up beginning February 1.

YEAR OF THE HORSE Ages 7–12 with adult 6:30–8:30 p.m. | Friday, February 7 $28/$32/$40 per adult-child pair One of the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac, the horse represents power, strength and perseverance. Celebrate the Chinese lunar New Year by learning how to work with a bamboo brush and ink washes to create your own scroll painting of a horse.

FAMILY COMEDY Ages 7–12 with adult 6:30–8:30 p.m. | Friday, February 21 $28/$32/$40 per adult-child pair Instructor: Bill Brewer Is your family funny? Capture the silliness on paper as you create cartoon characters of your family members and develop a sequential story. All in good fun!

PATTERNS ON WHEELS! Ages 6–12 with adult 6:30–8:30 p.m. | Friday, March 7 $28/$32/$40 per adult-child pair Explore the beautifully patterned Pakastani Cargo Truck, parked at the museum as part of the exhibition Echoes: Islamic Art and Contemporary Artists and create your own prints inspired by geometry.

Connect With Community Artists Throughout the year, the Ford Learning Center offers classes for adults proposed and taught by artists from the local community who bring their unique perspective and talents to the museum.

THE DOLL AS ART 1:30–4 p.m.

Saturdays, February 15–March 15 $91/$104/$130 Instructor: NedRa Bonds Art dolls are considered to be unique, one-of-a-kind art objects rather than toys.

Various cultures have used dolls to teach and entertain, as funerary figures, good luck charms and magical devices. Find out more and create your own art doll sculptures.
