DEVELOPMENT WITH NO PAUSE Guayaquil is a vigorous and modern city that changes everyday, with a vertiginous development that seems not to pause. In all sectors of the city the magnitude of this transformation is appraised, turning it into one of the most vigorous cities in Latin America, and the pride of all Ecuadorians. The intense commercial movement reflects in their main squares, streets and avenues. During the first part of the year, in spite of the worldwide economic crisis, the private sector is experiencing an important growth that reflects in the investment on important projects in real estate, financial and commercial sectors which contribute to stimulate the
economy, not only in Guayaquil but in general all over the country. The mercantile activity of the city goes along with the simplicity and amiability of its inhabitants. Thanks to the intense urban regeneration work undertaken by the Municipality and the decided participation of important companies bound to the tourist activity, Guayaquil at present prides of being one of the cities with the greatest number of visitors in Ecuador and one of most important of the region. All this work constitutes a convincing sample that in Guayaquil the best things are still to come. We think that with the participation of all people from Guayaquil and the serious and responsible commitment
of all our governors, we will achieve our goals. The present issue is dedicated to the commitment of people from Guayaquil. We include several topics of economy tourism and business and we are sure that they will be very interesting for our readers. The destination sites in Ecuador are also highlighted in this special edition. We are really grateful with the Municipality for allowing us to contribute in the ag-
grandizement and development process of Guayaquil as well as with the different companies from all over the country that help us to spread news about the economic potential of a city that firmly advances towards its development. Sincerely Guillermo Tenelema
The responsibility to generate true changes allowing us to keep on the way to progress and development falls on all Ecuadorian people, but fundamentally on the members of the government that have the responsibility to lead us along the way to follow, on their performance and vision will depend all the efforts to do in order to advance as a nation.

CIUDAD
UNA QUE CRECE CON EL ESFUERZO DE TODOS A CITY THAT GROWS WITH THE EFFORT OF EVERYONE Guayaquil has managed to undergo an important development process thanks to an effective municipal action, both by the magnitude of the public work, infrastructure, basic services, urban regeneration, among others, and also because it has been a revitalizing element for local economy by means of the generation of employment sources benefitting directly and indirectly to thousands of guayaquileños, as well as by the action directed to the creation and fortification of productive activities that contribute to reduce poverty levels and social inequality. Conscious that the education represents a fundamental axis for integral human development, the administration of Mayor Jaime Nebot, contributes to the formation of children of low economic resources through the programs “More Education” and “More Technology,” free text book delivery, didactic material, computer equipment, Internet service, furniture and improvement of educational infrastructure. All these actions constitute a small sample of the work executed by the present municipal administration, demonstrating successfully that from the municipal action, it is possible to foster a local development process promoting the true structural changes that the population demands: well-being and economical wealth.

GUAYAQUIL VISION OF FUTURE

Due to its intense commercial and financial activity, Guayaquil is the largest city in the country, and one of the most progressive cities on the Pacific coast of South America. Guayaquil has around two and a half million inhabitants. During the first decades of the twentieth century, the city like several countries of South America, received a considerable number of immigrants from several countries of Europe and the Middle East who with their culture and enterprising spirit contributed to the economic, social and cultural process of the city. At present, Guayaquil is a city where the modernity contrasts with a rich historical legacy of eminent people and heroic actions. Although serious social problems persist, common in a modern city, during the last years, an important process of growth and development has been undergone thanks to an efficient municipal administration. In this sense, the work undertaken by the municipal administration has been intense; in all sectors of the city, the magnitude of the public work executed by the municipality of Guayaquil can be appraised. The sectors of low economic resources have been served through works of basic social infrastructure, sewage system, potable water, public lighting system, education, and productive projects, contributing in this way to improve life conditions of all guayaquileños. It is important to indicate that the private investment has actively contributed to this process of change. During the first part of the year and in spite of the economic crisis that threatens the world, the private sector has shown encouraging indices which helps to create an atmosphere of confidence in the currency generation for the city and therefore for the state.

Guayaquil.
Next to the majestic Guayas River is the city of Guayaquil, the Pacific Pearl, with approximately 2,5 million inhabitants; her condition of main port of the country, together with the great industrial, commercial and services development allowed her to be recognized as the economic capital of Ecuador and one of the most important cities in South America. Today, the Pacific Pearl is one of the most developed cities in America thanks to an important process of urban regeneration, the most important architectural work in the last years, that includes not only the rescue of traditional and historical places, but rather the rescue of traditional values and the identity of a town proud of his history that has demonstrated his character of warrior when overcoming the setbacks and has become an impulse for progress and development. This has been possible thanks to the work undertaken by the Municipality, presided first by Eng. León Febres-Cordero and continued by the current Mayor, Lawyer Jaime Nebot, work that advances with strong steps and with the cooperation of the population, which consolidates this progress day by day. This permanent work has also allowed Guayaquil to become a city of tourist destination, contributing this way to the invigoration and development of the tourist industry so that in a future not very distant the tourism is the first item of revenues in the national economy. This vision has been emulated by other sectional entities of the country, so that Guayaquil has become a model city for development. Meanwhile, there are still
great and fundamental projects of urban regeneration that are being executed, such as sportive works, sidewalks, fillings, perrons, among others that constitute the great deployed municipal public work all along and wide of the city. The children, present and future of the homeland, have been benefited with the gratuitous delivery of useful school articles. The adaptations of roads allow the children to move quickly and without danger of accidents. Due to the increase of delinquency in Guayaquil, the Administration of Lawyer Jaime Nebot, in coordination with the main functions of the state and the participation of the civil society, have impelled the creation of the program “More Security Plan” with the purpose of supporting the work performed by the National Police in the fight against delinquency. In several points of the city (gas stations, service stations), close to bank institutions, 34 of a total of 42 tents of surveillance have been implemented, in which police patrol cars are parked in daily shifts and in a rotational way, in order to watch over defined quadrants. The statistics demonstrate convincingly the results obtained in the reduction of the delinquency indexes, whose tendency points to reach normal considered criminal parameters in a community in frank growth. This is a small sample of the work undertaken by the Municipality and the community in order to improve the life quality of thousands of Guayaquileños and to continue building, with bounded objectives, the present and future of the city considered the Pacific Pearl: Guayaquil.

The glorious dawn rises in the Malecón 2000 as the new symbol of the proud inhabitants of Guayaquil. It is the most populated province of the country and the one that concentrates the most diversity of migrations from Ecuador. Ever since ancestral times, it is immersed in the vertigo of strength and tenacity of her working people. This piece of Ecuadorian land is favored by nature and here, the great symbols of rice, coffee, cacao, sugar cane and cotton were raised; they generated wealth and welfare to the inhabitants. The system of mountains Chongón – Colonche runs through this coastal zone, characterized by exuberant vegetation and warm weather; there are some separated
hills in the area. The Guayas River and its affluent rivers form the hydrographic landscape. The influence of both sea currents, the cold of Humboldt and the warm of El Niño, make the weather like tropical savanna and tropical monsoon; therefore we have a fresh summer season between June and November and another rainy season between December and April. The average temperature is 25° C. The province of Guayas favors activities such as fishing and agriculture. The entire continental platform is considered as oil prospectus land. The area has 20.503

The suburb of “Las Peñas” is a testimony of colonial times, because the spears type architecture is well conserved and it is a main characteristic of great ports: wooden houses with big spaces between the floor and the ceiling, painted in light blue and white, the colors of the flag of Guayaquil. The courage of the heroes, which was decisive in the America’s Independence Process, is reflected in the Centenario Square where the names of the persons who made possible the liberty battles are printed in the stone. Guayaquil is the most important maritime and fluvial port of the country. The modernism is appreciated in the great constructions found in the commercial and financial downtown and in the modern urban zones extended all the way to the road of Samborondón. It is a beautiful and hospitable city with night life too. This city is made for everyone and she is waiting for you to visit her and experience unforgettable vacations.

Pedro de Alvarado, Governor of Guatemala, tried to snatch from Pizarro the territory of Quito. Sebastián de Benalcázar, at that moment governor of Piura, was informed about the departure of this expedition; therefore he armed a troop and left to the north to intercept him. Diego de Almagro went marching after him and reached him just in time in the plain of Colta, since Alvarado had already crowned the mountain range and begun to descend to the Andean valleys.
In order to take legal possession of the territory of Quito, Almagro founded the city of Santiago de Quito in August 15th 1534 in the vicinities of Riobamba City. The 26th, once he had taken possession of the territorial space, he interviewed with Alvarado and negotiated his retirement by means of 100.000 pesos in gold. However, thirteen days later, in August 28th, he founded the village of San Francisco de Quito, in the same place that Santiago.

Diego Daza, subió a Quito para pedir Since the men from Alvarado were increasing, Almagro, with the aid of the Royal Document of May 1534, same that authorized the conqueror to transfer any foundation made in an inadequate place, to a space proper to conquest, delegated Benalcázar to transfer the village of San Francisco. On December 6th of that same year, he settled the city over the ruins of the indigenous city abandoned by Rumiñahui. In June 1535, he left towards Peru and, since he passed through the city, he lifted the military camp of the area and headed to the south. Once he arrived to the Royal territory of Pizarro, he gave him the treasures plundered from the natives and requested authorization to conquer the territories north of Quito. He was appointed Governor’s Lieutenant of the lands he would conquer; he then went to San Miguel de Piura where he rested one month and afterwards left to Paita, where he recruited people, provisioned food and equipment and at the end of September of that same year he departed with his military brigade. He entered the Gulf of Guayaquil, pacified Puná and overcame the waters of the Guayas River searching for a way to Quito. In October or November of that same year, he was successful moving the city and settling it besides the river, in the vicinity of an indigenous town called Guayaquil, located “about 25 kilometers to the east of her current location” (Dora León Borja). This was behind the island of Santay, besides the Guayaquil River “that corresponds

to the current Bulubulu-Boliche River” (Ángel Véliz Mendoza). In this first establishment there were forty Spanish under the control of the Ordinary Mayors, Antonio de Rojas and Diego de Daza. Some days later, he continued his way to Quito, where he finally arrived and called for the Town Council of December 28th 1535. At the beginning of 1536, the city was attacked by the hardened chonos who destroyed the town and killed near half of all the neighbors. Diego Daza, ascended to Quito to ask for help but when he was returning he was defeated. In June of that same year, Pizarro, who was in Piura, commissioned Hernando Zaera to submit the Indians, reconstruct the city and move it to a safer place, but he was forced to retire his mission and help Pizarro who was sieged by the Incan armies. Numerous neighbors escaped to Quito and Puerto Viejo, therefore weakening the defenses; the punaes allied with the chonos and fenced in the city. There was a group sent to Portoviejo to look for help but it was ambushed when crossing the Baba River. The few defenders, under the lead of Rodrigo Vargas de Guzmán, were regrouped and formed a circle of protection, which they defended from the fury of the natives during four months; they suffered hunger and frequent attacks to such a point, that they were not able to abandon their weapons. Finally, Vargas achieved the aid of twenty men and with their help and that of the close neighbors finally defeated the natives. After this action, he moved the city to the well-known place

Pizarro sent Francisco de Orellana to pacify the province and to repopulate Santiago, whose neighbors, some of them, still survived in spite of the inflamed fight sustained. Before finishing the year 1537, Guayaquil was “where the ships come next to her”, place that could have been close to the north of the Santa Ana Hill. Orellana appointed Juan Porcel as City Mayor and left to Peru. He participated in the battle of Salinas (April 26th 1538) against Almagro and was designated as Royal Second Lieutenant. Later he was designated as Governor’s Lieutenant of Santiago de la Culata; he then addressed himself to Paita with reinforcements and in 1541 left to his Amazon adventure. The chonos and punaes took advantage of this absence and attacked the city once more. In May 1542, Captain Diego de Urbina, moved the city and looked for a refuge among the huancavilcas. After one year of continuous fight, he defeated the rebellion and reestablished Santiago in the original place where Benalcázar settled it; this is, in the town of Guayaquil. Meanwhile, the civil war started and it concluded with the murder of Almagro and Francisco Pizarro’s death. His brother, Gonzalo Pizarro, the only survivor of the battle, afraid from the king’s punishment, rose in rebellion and got appropriated of the territories of Nueva Castilla. In 1547, the pacifier Pedro de La Gasca, together with Captain Francisco de Olmos, disembarked in Manabí in order to combat Pizarro; he and the Guayaquil neighbors who were loyal to the crown executed Manuel de Estacio, Guayaquil Guía Informativa

cas.

There is an existent record of the Town Council that took place in Guayaquil on July 24th 1781; in this record, a discussion took place about “the celebration where the Royal Banner was solemnized in memory of the city and Province conquest, whose function was verified on the next morning, twenty fifth of that same month and year, day in which the celebration of The Church of the Apostle Santiago takes place”. This makes it very probable that the moving of the city to the Santa Ana Hill coincided with July 25th 1547, because since then, the city didn’t suffer indigenous attacks anymore and soon took possession of the Guayas Ba-
sin, searching for development. This could be the reason why this date was considered the date of the conquest of the city and the Province. Starting from this last moving, Guayaquil is definitively unaware of new attacks; the city took possession of the great hydrographic net of Guayas and started her development. Doctor María Luisa Laviana Cuetos, in the conclusion of her book “Guayaquil in the XVIII Century, natural resources and economic development” says it is necessary to highlight “the importance of the XVIII century in the history of Guayaquil, since we have been able to prove that this area in this
century was characterized by a series of perceptible transformation processes in all orders, since the purely bureaucratic ones until the economic and populational issues. The accumulation of most of these transformations, if not all of them, in the last third of the century confer to those few decades a category in the evolution of Guayaquil that after a leisurely and slow development in the last two and a half centuries, suddenly seems to be in a hurry to become a great city, goal that will be gotten in very little time, in perfect symbiosis with her province whose products find in the port, their best exit road.”

COACHING: WHAT WOULD SOCRATES DO IF HE WOULD MANAGE MICROSOFT? By Josémaría Vásquez Professor from IDE
The answer is linked to the concept of coaching; this is a process of personalized and systematic improvement of behaviors bounded to managing competitions. All competitions that are wanted to be developed should be aligned with the business strategy. What would Socrates do if he would manage Microsoft? What would Aristotle do, one of the biggest thinkers and sages of the whole history, student of Plato and teacher of Alexander the Great, if he would have to create excellence and success in the world of the current business? In what would he be centered? What would he change? We are in a managerial atmosphere governed by rational parameters of operation, in which it is enough to apply these parameters to subsist in crisis moments. But currently the changes are structural. It is not enough to apply logical approaches anymore. We need to create new work contexts, not of hierarchical, neither pyramidal character, but based on the human interaction as the only factor able to make and to improve the reality of work and the results of the same.

People are, since now on, the only differential value. Now that we have learned how to manage technical and technologies, we have to negotiate the behaviors of some with others, and nobody has taught us how to do this. In these moments, reality is indicating us the need to restate what is important over what is urgent, and to recover the substantial from ourselves, since we obtain more benefits, also economic, when the processes are applied from people and not in spite of people.
What is it, then, managerial coaching? It is a process of personalized and systematic improvement of bounded behaviors and managerial competitions carried out with the help of a coach (trainer).
But how can we take this into practice? These days, ninety five percent of the managers say the correct thing but only five percent of them do it. One of the objectives of coaching will be to change this proportion or, at least, to bring nearer theory and practice, facts and arguments.
In first place, coaching is a managerial habit. It is an activity carried out in a daily way. The manager that carries out coaching works with his team, offering them in a continuous and natural way challenges and indications for empowering their abilities and for counteracting their weak points. In second place he is a helper. This implies that the one who carries out the work is not truly the coach, but the professional himself.
History

Coaching (from the English verb to coach means to train, to prepare). It is used in the sports world like a process that goes beyond the merely physical training. Sports coaches want to motivate the sportsman and to stimulate him psychologically in order to achieve his objectives. In the decade of the 70’s, Timothy Gallway, a tennis expert in the University of Harvard, published the book “The Inner Game of Tennis”, in which he exposed the rules used to mentally unblock the players and make them develop their potential at maximum. The game proposed by Gallway was not only adapted for different sports, but also to other different environments as well as for managing companies.
To support this task, it is necessary, just as it happens with other managerial activities, that the company implements specific administrative tools.
In third place, the task of the coach is guided to the development of professional competitions in the team members. The competitions are those habitual behaviors that allow a certain person to be successful in his/her function. The competitions that each person will have to develop will vary according to the responsibility that he/she has in the organization, his/her particular strengths and weaknesses, his/her career perspective, etc. In fourth place, both, the coach activity and the competitions that are supposed to be developed should be aligned with the business strategy of the company and with the other managerial practices being applied. This internal coherence is necessary to avoid the waste of efforts or the generation of fears and resistances. This implies a reflection made by the team to establish if the coach practice is coherent with the organizational culture and the different managing styles. In fifth place, the task of the coach is gradual. Modifying behavior habits is an expensive task, and this is why the improvement of professional competitions is achieved in a slow and progressive way. The coach should be able to instruct each member of the team with a series of progressive and continuous challenges, appropriated to the reality of each one, but with the purpose of taking them in an inclined curve of improvement. In sixth place, coaching is based on the strengths. In order to make the workers face any personal improvement plan in a realistic way, the coach needs
What would Socrates do if he would manage Microsoft? Socrates used to say that teaching doesn’t exist, but only learning. Socrates helped to learn other people asking them questions and leaving them find the answers for themselves: “Those that treat with me, although they seem at the beginning very ignorant, once our relationship advances, make admirable progresses (...) And it is evident that they never learn anything from me, because it is themselves and for themselves that they discover and engender many beautiful thoughts” (Teeteo, 150d).

Finally, the coach should be patient. Modifying work habits is an arduous task and the coach should know it. It is necessary to be willing to begin and to restart as many times as necessary, or at least, the times the circumstances allow it, without losing the trust in the subordinate. On the other hand, it is very difficult to motivate a change in people without giving them a minimum of securities regarding the shortcomings that they may have during the period of learning, same that will be understood and tolerated.

Then, the coach should be visionary. The coach should be able to see in his team potentialities that neither themselves are able to see. He should propose them ambitious goals, beyond what they believe they are able to carry out. This is an extremely delicate task, since sometimes proposing unreachable goals can be a source of big frustrations.

A big city is necessarily an educated city. Along the history of Guayaquil, diverse institutes of basic, secondary and superior education of great prestige have been created in order to provide a good professional formation to her inhabitants. An example of this is the Catholic University of Santiago de Guayaquil. This institution was created on May 17th 1962. Dr. Héctor Romero Menéndez (1962-1966), Father José Joaquín Flores (1962-1965) and Engineer Raúl Maruri Díaz (1962-1963) were the dean’s founders of Jurisprudence, Philosophy and Engineering. On June 6th 1963 the first academic period of classes began with the Faculties of: Jurisprudence, Social and Political Sciences, Philosophy, Letters and Educational Sciences and Physical Sciences and Mathematics. The courses were dictated in the facilities of the School “April 20”, that belonged to the Jesuits Priests Order where it functioned until 1966 year in which the main building was inaugurated; it is located in Km. 1,5 of Avenue Carlos Julio Arosemena Tola and this is her headquarter until the present time. Within the years the faculties of Economy, Architecture and the Institute of Technical Education for Development were created. In 1969 the School of Social Work was incorporated (this school was functioning since 1960 with the auspice of the Club Rotario de Guayaquil). Afterwards, the careers of Interior Design, the Faculty of Medical Sciences and the School of Infirmary were created. Finally, in 1985, the School of Computer Systems Engineering was created in the Faculty of Engineering and the School of Law, in Jurisprudence. In the statutes currently effective, approved in the year 2001, the name of Careers replaced the denomination of Schools.

GUAYAQUIL, GLORIOUS AND PATRIOT Guayaquil was born in the cradle of the Guayas River, in the layouts of the Santa Ana Hill. After her foundation our city extended to the plains, facing setbacks bravely. In October 9th 1820, in the Town Council house, Guayaquil gave the First Yell of Independence. It was her flag, with light blue and white colors and the stars of October, the one that first flamed in Ecuador like a free Province. Our patrimony is in her neighborhoods, squares, parks, streets and monuments.
Guayaquil has been majestically erected as big over time thanks to the testimony of men and women that have worked with love for their city and have become a good example. Guayaquil, vital pulse of economic development in the country The street next to the banks of the river, El Malecón, is a witness of our progress. Guayaquil has grown vigorous. In the street called Pichincha, also known as Street of Commerce, the first importer companies were settled, the first industries began, the bank activities, the free press. The mules and the carriages arrived, then the gondolas and, with the electricity, the tram. Afterwards, there was the automobile, the mail, the telephones, all contributed to continue growing with strong steps and laboriously during the years. Guayaquil, vital heart of the country’s development, is majestically erected over time.

MAAC-ANTHROPOLOGICAL AND CONTEMPORARY ART MUSEUM A corner for art in Malecón 2000 Malecón 2000, the biggest and modern work of infrastructure in Guayaquil has a variety of different spaces for the entertainment of national and foreigners. A room for art reflected in a museum, live outdoor shows and good cinema may also be found here. The Malecón would not be complete without an area dedicated to culture and this one is called MAAC. It is the new headquarter of the Anthropological and Contemporary Art Museum (MAAC) that belongs to the Central Bank of Ecuador and has 10.000 square meters approximately. Originally, it was conceived with the shape of the manteño – huancavilca raft cast, an important pre-Hispanic instrument inside the coastal culture. It is located in the banks of the river; from the outside, you will be able to enjoy the view of the Guayas River, the island Santay, the Santa Ana Hill and the neighborhood of Las Peñas. A bridge allows access to
the main external space. This space works like a great agora for diverse cultural programs and from there you may access the other atmospheres. There are three big areas distributed on the ground floor: reception, rooms for exhibitions and warehouses for the museum funds and research areas. The rooms for exhibitions are joined by the museums, research areas and a movie projection room. Also, it has a wide patio of fast food with 6 stands and general services. A well-known historical monument was incorporated to this area, “El Fortín”, which was formerly used to defend the City from pirate’s attacks. This place was restored and given an appropriate environment in order to recover his importance.
MAAC CINEMA It is a film complex located in Malecón 2000 that presents international and recent premieres of the world best cinema. It opened his doors to the
public on December 5th 2003. It regularly schedules retrospectives, homage specials, and thematic samples from producers and outstanding movies. It also presents the most selected North American commercial productions. Ecuadorian movies have in MAAC CINEMA their fundamental window. MAAC CINEMA has a projection room with capacity for 350 people. It has splendid projection equipment for movies in 35 mm and 16 mm, sound Dolby surround, digital and analogous video projection and a properly equipped scenario featuring sound and lights for live theater, dance, and music. The company “Ocho y Medio” from Quito was appointed by the Regional Direction of Culture from the Central Bank of Ecuador in order to create, program, and promote the first room of cinema art in Guayaquil. With a successful history in Quito, “Ocho y Medio” has made of MAAC CINEMA the new refuge of good movies in the main
port of Ecuador. In the month of June, the famous festival EUROCINE 2005 took place showing in Quito, Cuenca and Guayaquil the best of European art in 13 movies. “What is a cinema festival for? Festivals are a space for education and encounter from which nobody comes out empty”, commented Mariana Andrade, General Manager of “Ocho y Medio”. In this way, Germany, Belgium, France, Spain, England, Italy, Holland and The Netherlands, had their space; attentive spectators classified the festival like a complete success and like one more advanced step for an art culture that is being developed for few years in our country.
