2016 Phew what year, had we known how it would go we might perhaps have fast-forwarded to 2017. Still we seem to have come through it relatively unscathed.
You may be wondering about our fabulous cover? Well I have to thank the fabulous Mr Paul Shriek again as he planted the idea “End of an era” in my head in the first instance, then came my light bulb moment, fashion through the decades when fashion really was, well………….. Fashion.
The 50s 60s 70s and 80s, enter the creative genius and photography of Junkyard, spice it up with some fabulous models, and finish with a sprinkle of magic from NE Love’s latest recruit, designer Kelly Flood and here you have NE Love No.19. What about this publication? What’s it all been about?
At its heart it really is about love; it’s been a year where mistakes were made, where we did our best to put them right. It’s been about people in our lives that don’t share our blood or our surnames but whom we think of as family.
About rare glorious moments of clarity that spring out of nowhere and you wish could last forever. Most of all though its about the parties special times shared and getting you all together, for no other reason but to have a good time.
Therefore here you have our New Years edition, as always it’s for those of you that think differently than the norm, you, that stands out in the crowd, Surprisingly there are more of you than you think.

An integral component of the Northeast club scene, Newcastle born DJ/producer Cristoph has dedicated years of hard work when it comes to his music. Straight off the back of the release of his new album titled ‘8-track’ on Hot Since 82’s Knee Deep In Sound label, we sat down with him to discuss the album along with launch of his own event this boxing day
You’re playing and launching your own party Providence on Boxing Day in Newcastle, please can you tell us a little bit more about this?
I really can’t wait for this. Running my own party has always been a dream of mine but I wanted everything to be right before I launched it. Basically it’s in a venue called World Headquarters back in Newcastle which is a really cool, intimate club. It has low ceilings and is pretty dark - just very minimalistic so everything is about the music and the people there. The idea is to maybe have two a year and have the Shindig crew hosting it. It’s great for me to have that team supporting me as they have been running events for nearly 25 years so they are well experienced. I’ll be playing the first couple on my own, so it will be a nice 5-6 hour set where I can relax and take the crowd on a journey - the way I like to. From there I will look to expand the party inviting guests and taking it to other cities, but again I will do this when I feel the time is right. There’s no rush. There’s already a lot of hype and interest and people are supposedly travelling from places around the UK so I’m very excited about it.
Can you tell us about the Newcastle club scene and Shindig? How has it influenced who you are today?
Newcastle is predominantly known as a ‘Party City’ so it has a big reputation for Stag and Hen Parties. It also has a huge student population so commercial nights are pretty popular. However, there is still quite a strong underground club scene here. Granted there isn’t something every single week but the nights we do have throughout the year showcase some of the world’s best DJ’s. The top one of these events is of course Shindig. It’s been running 24 years now and shows
no sign of slowing down. I’ve been going to Shindig since my brother and sister used to sneak me in with them around when I was 15/16 and it really has had a major influence on the music I play and produce nowadays. Week in, week out I was able to see the likes of Sasha, Digweed, Erick Morillo, Roger Sanchez, Danny Tenaglia, Satoshi Tomiie alongside Scott Bradford - who for me is one of the best DJ’s I’ve seen. Watching how the world’s greatest DJ’s built their sets, the styles they played, how they read the crowd etc. all gave me huge inspiration and taught me a lot.
I love being on the road and travelling around but there are certain times where I miss home. I think that’s natural. The main things I miss are my Mam and my family, my girlfriend and my mates. I also miss my studio and just disappearing on long walks along the coast or driving out into the countryside to clear my head and get some inspiration to write new music.
Your new album has just been released this October. Do you think releasing music on a different record label has influenced your sound in a new way at all?
There has no doubt been a change in the music I’m producing now to what I was 18months/2 years ago when I broke out. This however hasn’t been influenced by the record labels I am or have been releasing on. I came with a game plan and have stuck to it. I much prefer the melodic side to music, tracks with darker elements too and that’s why my music is heading the way it is.
What’s your favourite track from the new album?
Haha, I knew someone would ask me this question one day! I really don’t know. I really like ‘Alone’ and ‘The Enemy Within’ but if I had to choose one right now I would probably lean towards ‘Supreme Solace’.
As someone who is performing all over the world, how does the Newcastle crowd stand-out from other cities?
Newcastle will always hold a special place in my heart as I’m very proud
of where I come from, so playing in my hometown is always a special occasion for me. I think it stands out most of all because a lot of my close friends and family seem to make sure they attend the gig and its always great to see them. Also people who have I have met throughout the years of being a resident in Newcastle do their best to get down and support me. This added to being a local lad helps the atmosphere be extra special I feel.
If you weren’t a DJ/producer, what job do you think you would be doing now?
My family used to have a business owning bars and nightclubs so maybe something in that field. I have a degree in Criminology but I really don’t know where I would use it. I do have a fascination with Forensic Science but I don’t think my degree would take me directly into that profession. I never really think about what I would be, I just concentrate on where I am and am grateful for the opportunity I have to chase my true dream. Tell us about your favourite food and drinks spots in Newcastle.
Food wise I love an Italian restaurant in Jesmond called ‘Sale Pepe’. Choosing one particular meal from the menu which would be my favourite is so hard as I love everything. The pizzas are amazing. There’s a great Teppanyaki style restaurant in the city centre called ‘Hana Hana’ which I enjoy going to and also ‘Cafe 21’ - this is a bit of a posher place but it was my Dad’s favourite. For drinks I normally just hit the city centre so go to places like Empress, Tup Tup, Florita’s Tokyo etc. But to be honest I never really go out for drinks when I’m home.
What do you see for the future, are there any landmarks that you would like to hit or venues/events you want to play?
I have my plan for the future set in my head, consisting of starting my own label, my own parties and different ways to climb the ladder in the industry. Still a long way to go to get to where I want to be. There’s certain venues I really want to play, for instance Stereo in Montreal, DC10 in Ibiza, Paradise Club in Mykonos, Cocorico in Rimini - there’s so many I could name. I am so fortunate to have played some of the venues I already have or am due to play.
Name one artist past or present that you would like to collaborate with and why.
Probably Eric Prydz. I think the man is a genius and the best producer out there at the moment l

Here at NE Love our absolute favourite thing in the world is to see our fellow northerners do well, on this occasion though it concerns three of our favourite’s Lee, Mick and Geoff. It was back in 2009 that they first came together to entertain us, with what were to become some of the finest underground parties we have seen in years on rooftops, cellars and even a 200-year-old music hall.
The 3 have taken the last 3 years out to pursue solo projects. Foss has been occupied with the Lizards electronic project (alongside James Hadfield), which has released on many “hot” underground dance labels, including Not An Animal, ran by North Eastern Expats “Bad Passion. Mick has been busy with his band “The Great Curve”, who have been making a name for themselves with a string of exciting gigs across the region. Finally, Geoff has been occupied with his Man Power electronic music project, which has seen him rise to prominence as an internationally touring DJ . His next venture is the record label “Me Me Me” who will be releasing Last Waltz newest record “Tunnel Snakes” which will be the first in a whole bunch of new material from our fave trio.
Last Waltz are Lee Forster (Lizards) Mick Rolfe (The Great Curve) and Geoff Kirkwood (Man Power). Outside of their solo projects, Last
Waltzhave released on labels including Futureboogie, Endless Flight (Mule Musiq), Tusk Wax, Lets Play House, Is It Balearic, and many more. After a two year break from producing together, the three North East England born producers finally felt brave enough to suffer the inevitable studio fist fights and tantrums that have always occurred during their creative process. This latest session has resulted in potentially their most cohesive and impressive output to date, with an EP that swings between deep excursions, psychedelic disco and industrial electro, only to have Red Axes and Naduve take the track into an altogether more low-slung and feral direction. This comeback record from Last Waltz, features three new, original tracks, and a remix from the first ever recorded collaboration of Tel Aviv’s Red Axes (I’m A Cliche) & Naduve (Disco Halal).
Me Me Me is shaping up to be an imprint for crate diggers, blurring the boundaries of electronic music and forging new channels for the dancefloor. Future contributions are incoming from Axel Boman, Mike Simmonetti, Chida, Fort Romeau, Hammer, Rex The Dog, Daniel Maloso, Last Waltz, James Hadfield (as Elizabeth Collective) and of course Man Power.
Keep up the good work guys x l

21 years on Woven has finally returned home to Elvet Bridge where it all began for Van Mildert founder Chris Hayes back in 1995. The award winning independent Gentlemen’s Outfitters has now expanded to cover 3 floors which are packed full of menswear, accessories and footwear.
Ladies if you’re looking for a gift for your man this Christmas look no further than Woven in Durham City, in all likelihood your man already knows Woven because they have been doling out style advice for years now, catering for those guys with real style, while also helping; mmm,,,,, lets just say those little less in the know, to avoid some real faux pas. Get in to woven, find your style then lock it down.
Chris and his team have dedicated years to finding a list of go-to labels that will fit both personal aesthetic and body type. These days you will probably have less time to spend picking out matching things before you head out every morning, let alone shopping for them in the first place. Yet here is a place where they will advise on every aspect from daily to formal wear.
Offering a diverse range of British fashion and Heritage brands from Gibson London and Remus Uomo to Merc London and Gabicci Vintage the shop caters to many styles from the Mods to the dapper English gentleman and to the many stylish men who crave a fashion fix in the North East
So while jeans and (smart) trainers may still feature heavily on weekends, suits will become increasingly important this decade as, unless you work in an industry with a strict uniform, your workplace and off-duty wardrobes will begin to merge. While last decade was about being smart when you needed to be in the office etc, this will be about being smart 24/7. Trend-led items like designer trainers are a great addition to your wardrobe, but make sure you also set some funds aside for classics: a beautifully-made everyday bag for work, a go-anywhere overcoat or an umbrella you didn’t panic-buy in a sudden downpour. Offering a diverse range of British fashion and Heritage brands from Gibson London and Remus Uomo to Merc London and Gabicci Vintage the shop caters to many styles from the Mods to the dapper English gentleman and to the many stylish men who crave a fashion fix in the North East.
The small team of 7 staff all have their own area of expertise, from accessories specialists to bespoke made-to-measure tailors ensuring that you are in the best hands during any visit. Get in to Woven and use them for what they’re good at…they love it!

I’m thrilled to be able to say that it has now been just over one year since Prohibition Cabaret Bar first opened its doors, and what a year it has been. Over the last 12 months the bar has gone from strength to strength and, though it’s had its fair share of ups and downs, ultimately things are looking very positive for the future.
In August an appropriately timed and flat-out honest Facebook post I put online at a rather low moment went accidentally viral and I saw a huge increase in my social media reach (seen by 740,000 Facebook users!) which, in turn, resulted in a fairly dramatic increase in customers to the bar. I received thousands of messages of support, well-wishing, encouragement, and advice, from both customers and, admirably, other small business owners. I was given extremely valuable feedback on the venue and how I can attract further custom with simple changes and tweaks. I am still humbled and extremely grateful for how the post was received and in awe at the undeniable power of social media. Honesty is definitely the best policy and the customer is always right!
There’s certainly been quiet periods; particularly throughout January when people were trying to behave themselves and cut back on indulgences, and over summertime when many folk were off on their travels. But in spite of those more pressing months I’ve managed to keep out of the red and stay profitable, though I still haven’t taken a wage yet — at the moment it’s a case of juggling multiple day jobs on top of the business. I do, however, employ three paid members of staff, so there are wages being paid, which is a decent start.
Last year I attended the NE Expo to spread the word about the venue and that it was available for private hires. I’m really pleased with the response I’ve had from local and national firms using the space for workshops, conferences, mixers, and, of course, parties. Getting into the hire market has been hugely beneficial during the quieter periods and, honestly, I don’t think the business would have been as successful during this first year were it not for these hires.
There have been all sorts of different private hires coming through the door alongside the corporate events such as: film and photo shoots, fundraisers, training sessions, networking events, group and society meetings, and so on. With all of these hires as well as a jam-packed live entertainment calendar each month I’ve certainly been kept busy!
It’s been fantastic to see the venue cater to such a range of uses; that’s exactly what I built it for. Variety really is the spice of life!
I’m looking forward to what the second year of business has in store for Prohibition, especially in regards to the type of events I’ll be booking; up to now I’ve had an incredible variety of performers grace my stage, from musicians to knife throwers to burlesque dancers and drag artists, and hopefully this wonderfully diverse roster will continue to grow well into next year and beyond.
Gateshead Quays is a pretty resurgent area and it’s doing a good job of carving out its own unique music scene, which I’m proud to say Prohibition has become a decent chunk of. Luckily I have the Sage on this side of the river too, which certainly helps; I’m hoping that Prohibition can become more deeply involved in their Jazz and Americana festivals next year, as it caters well to both of those genres.
As the bar rolls on I’m hoping to expand the drinks menu and explore daytime trade options. Throughout September of this year the venue housed a pop-up venture, The Temperance Coffee House, as a collaboration to use the space during daytime hours to get a feel for how receptive the area is to café culture. It ran for September only due to other commitments, but in that month I saw enough potential to consider its return in the new year and run the venue in both guises. The Temperance branding was deliberately designed to align with the overall brand of Prohibition, so in that sense it’s definitely a viable option for the long-term. Watch this space!
So, that’s a little bit about my business, Prohibition Cabaret Bar; what it does, where it’s been and where it’s going. I’d like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to everyone who’s supported Prohibition over these last twelve months. To everyone who’s bought a drink, hired the venue, performed on my stage, spread the word, and helped in any way to get the place to where it is today, it means a lot that you’re all on board and supporting a small business such as myself. So, CHEERS! and here’s to many more years of Prohibition! l
With all of the hires and a jam-packed live entertainment calendar each month, I’ve certainly been kept busy during my first year in business!

As a 31 year old single male that hadn’t dated in three years, maybe more, I thought it was time to get back on the horse and dangle my proverbial carrot out there (ooer!)
I decided my first port of call would be Tinder, the nefarious hook up app that now is more like match.com. May I add that I think the only photo you should be allowed is your passport photo. It seems 99% of all females seem to have some sort of photography/wizardry ability. Low lit selfies from above can be extremely misleading. ‘Shallow’ I hear you cry! Yes, as a puddle, but when you’re on an app based on photos alone I can’t really be blamed!
For the first week my inbox was a tumbleweed-infested wasteland, my ego was severely deflated. Some of my friends might say this was a good thing, afterwards slowly but surely matches started to crawl in one by one.
My first date was in one of Newcastle’s many newly renovated pubs. You know the type; Edison bulbs everywhere and the odd repurposed
wood pallet. Now I can handle a drink, but when my date arrived and downed three pints of Scrumpy cider to my one pint of lager, the alarms bells should of been ringing.
As luck would have it, we hit it off well enough, I was honest in what I was looking for, as was she, so, we decided to have one more drink and move it on back to the flat.
Had she planned this seduction? Mood lighting and various throws in the bedroom set the scene, the soundtrack was kisses that sounded like buckets of wallpaper paste thrown against a wall, as we lay side by side, I guess those ciders took effect, what I thought was a gentle purring turned into a roaring snore, my tinder princess had decided on a quick nap or so it seemed, I decided that it was the booze and not my technique, may I add we were clothed at this point, have you ever felt the terror of having 4% battery on your phone when trying to use the flashlight? It was all very Crystal Maze, after searching high and low and finally finding the keys. I leave posting the keys through the letterbox I chalk the night up as a loss.
I’m not entirely sure how I would sum up my first Tinder experience I’ll leave that to you, but I will continue my journey undeterred, until next, happy swiping!
We’re always on the look out for more great stories to entertain us, and you! Please send any of your tales of the unexpected to info@nelove.co.uk and if your name is ANON that’s fine too! l

In a post-digital era, in which digital technologies have become ubiquitous, the analogue and digital have combined. Digilog Prints showcases printmaker Chris Wilson’s ongoing research into postdigital letterpress printmaking through the creation of unique limited edition artwork. The works on display make use of both traditional and contemporary production techniques to explore the potential of marrying established print processes with digital technology. Laser cut, 3D printed and laser engraved print blocks have been integrated with relief printing techniques dating to the 18th Century. The exhibition showcases the great creative potential found in harnessing the strengths of both digital and analogue approaches to produce new dynamic artworks. Digilog is a propositional term, posited by the artist, in order to investigate
how digital and analog processes have merged as the post-digital age has become established. The exhibition is intended to stimulate discourse and debate by displaying developing print processes and artworks generated through the course of an ongoing practice based PhD research project. Rum Razor was founded 2 years ago by Paul Cowen in Trafford Place, Durham. The ethos remains true to the traditional barbershop values of old. “Not only do you come here for a haircut and a shave but you can visit our shop to offload, unwind and grab a coffee in the company of friends and neighbours.”
Pauls training was an old school apprenticeship; such was his determination to become a barber that he first offered to work for free while picking up the tricks of his trade. Suffice to say he obviously diod just that, I can’t let any of the guys from work ‘pop’ in to see him about Ne Love because that pop in for fifteen minutes for work invariably turns in to a hair cut or a quick beard trim, its like letting shopaholic lose with a credit card!
‘It’s not all about the money it’s about the service! Traditional barbers have a specific charm because they prioritise hanging out over splashing out. Fortunately, this is where we fit in. We offer the authentic service with the
warm, friendly, come-as-you-are atmosphere, add to that comics, music, cutthroats, tattoos and beards, what’s not to like?
If you’re yet to visit, what are you waiting for? When you do pop in! Tell them we sent you because there is a saying that always brings this particular barber to my mind, ‘friends don’t let friends get bad haircuts’
We at NE Love would highly recommend visiting Rum Razor (not in work time), not just for the barbering brilliance but also for the amazing atmosphere and Paul’s ability to make you feel as though you’ve been friends for a lifetime.

Our attention often turns to getting fit, with 4 in 5 of us starting a health kick in January resulting in gyms being full of new fitness fanatics looking to burn the Christmas excess away.
While it is great that people are wanting to get in shape come January the problem arises that come Feb/March these people who were so keen on getting fit have vanished and the gym is back to its normal self. Only 3% of Brits will manage to make a permanent change to their lifestyle and nearly a quarter of Brits 23% will have given up on their new regime by the 1st February.
This is the problem that needs addressing, people are often looking for the quick fix and not the long term solution. The fitness industry likes to cash in on this influx of people, with shops offering the latest celebrity fitness DVDs, life makeover books, gym clothing and fitness equipment. The problem is that all of these options offer short term gains, rather than long term maintainable gains. The question I ask people is, can you see yourself maintaining that- two, six or twelve months down the line? If you can’t then it isn’t the right option for you. It has to fit around your lifestyle otherwise things will always get in the way.
People will often seek out my help come March, when the fitness DVD or life makeover book has failed them. To achieve great long lasting results your mindset has to be right.

Newcastle’s historic High Bridge Street is an area that while in the last year and a half has seen a massive renovation, is still home to Newcastle’s oldest pub The Old George where it is rumored that King Charles 1st was a regular.
It is here that you will find one of the newest additions to our designer shopping revolution. CrossEyes optician operates out of the ground floor of a stately Georgian house and from the moment you enter, you can tell it is no ordinary practice.
The impressive reception area contains not only an array of frames that range from funky to formal a number of which are so fabulous that you ‘want to’ need glasses, these Danish designed darlings are displayed against original exposed brickwork, yep this place is impossibly cool, but just how good are they?
Oh they are good, after showing up for my Saturday lunchtime
appointment I’m offered tea or coffee and allowed to mooch a little before being whisked off by Tim for my eye test.
I have been wearing reading glasses for a couple of years now so I have had a few tests; this one was friendly, chatty, efficient and uber modern. More to the point though, It’s informative, for example I now know that I am unlikely to ever need glasses for distance, and that the glasses that I have been wearing are slightly too strong for me!

VIRGO: It wont just be the star on top of the Xmas tree that is shining this festive season Virgo, its almost like you have been sprinkled with glitter and fairy dust as there is a magical quality around the holidays for you. You are filled with creative ideas and will be spreading festive cheer to all whom you come in contact with. This time of year can often be a bit challenging but this year you will be feeling the true meaning of this time and its presence not presents that will be decking your halls.
LIBRA: Have you ever heard the saying “Like a child at Xmas” Libra? that is how you will be feeling these holidays. Excitement, and fun will fill your days as you let your playful side loose. Let the ‘grown ups’ deal with the stress and seriousness and you hang out with the kids. You’ve had a tough year, but I have had a little word with Santa.
SCORPIO: Jesus was born around this time Scorpio and there is a bit of a rebirth going on for you too so its out with the old and in with the new. As the bells chime in the new year you will be filled with a new found clarity and its really time to put the past to bed one final time and embrace the bells ringing in the positive changes that await you. Make your resolutions and stick to them.
SAGITTARIUS: You may be counting the pennies this holiday season. It’s not about how much a gift cost but how much thought went in to it. To you Xmas not about the flashiness it’s about family, and you could be found cooking for an army of people, and loving every minute of it. Please remember to give yourself a little rest too, you prepare the feast and let the others clean up the fall out.
CAPRICORN: Expect a visit from the Ghost of Xmas past Capricorn, as you know full well that this time is about sharing with those you love, but you will also be thinking of those no longer with around, as nostalgia rears its head. Remember that when people are in our heart they are still around miles, even death cannot change that. Count your blessings, both past and present and keep a candle burning for those you miss, So pour yourself a sherry and allow yourself to reminisce with a smile.
AQUARIUS: Don’t over do it with the festivities this season Aquarius as you may end up all partied out. Now is the time to eat, drink and be merry but take this to excess and you will be left wishing Santa had brought you Alka Seltzer! Pace yourself, dip your toe in the water, don’t dive right in.
PISCES: Keep the mince pies and your enthusiasm to a minimum this year Pisces, You are excited and love this time of year, remember the toy you played with so much it was broken
on boxing day? … its all well and good getting in to the Xmas spirit, have a drink but not a whole bottle!
ARIES: Not much in the way of festive cheer for you I’m afraid Aries, you have had a very tough year and the end of it could find you feeling very drained and a bit bah humbug! Let it snow though as 2017 has a much better feeling to it, say good riddance to this year and welcome the new with both arms, next year will be the year you shine.
TAURUS: As this year draws to a close Taurus, you could be confronted with some unexpected changes. Its like you may need to walk the plank of the festive ship as chaos and drama seem to served up for Xmas dinner rather than turkey. Don’t get caught up in it all though as all this is doing is forcing changes that are long over due, this clearing is essential and when the dust settles you will see that this was indeed the perfect gift!
GEMINI: You’re writing a list and checking it twice Gemini, but there may be slight delays on the Xmas delivery system as a need for patience is showing for you this month. You’ve been good and actually deserve everything on your list, but it seems to be stuck in transit for a while, so don’t be disheartened if you wake up on Xmas morning and your stocking isn’t full, you’ll get what you asked for and more, just not at the moment, its coming to in the new year.
CANCER: Did you put Love on your list to Santa this year Cancer? As that is the gift you are giving and receiving. Your holiday season could rival ‘love actually’ as love is all around, you feel it in your fingers, you feel it in your toes… Family, friends and laughter will invade the Xmas party and the party will carry on well in to the New Year.
LEO: It looks like Scrooge is alive and well this holiday time Leo, as even though this time of year is meant to be about fun and laughter you are not having any of it, its almost as if you would prefer to attend the pity party .You cant see the good for the Christmas tree! Now remember what happened to Scrooge? he was made to see the error of his ways, and forced to count his blessings and appreciate the people around him . Take a holly leaf out of his book this year and open your eyes to what you have and put a smile on your face, this is after all the season of good cheer! l
David Hurn’s rendering of the 1960s encompasses both Hollywood screen idols and East End sun-seekers; headline news, alongside rituals unchanged for centuries. Photoessays from the streets of New York, anti-Vietnam protests, the London Soho scene, the French Riviera, Queen Charlotte’s Ball and the Isle of Wight Festival in 1969; portraits of Michael Caine, Quentin Crisp, Julie Christie, amongst many more; and
Hurn’s work within the film industry, capturing The Beatles during filming of A Hard Day’s Night, Sean Connery in From Russia With Love and Jane Fonda in Barbarella. An incredibly well-rounded vision of the 1960s that is not to be missed.
