NOTHIN’ WEAK ABOUT THIS FASHION

NORTHUMBRIA ROCKS IT

NEL VE.CO.UK / EIGHT

The time has come, once again, to see the undeniable talent that comes from Northumbria University. Their final show is always a spectacle. Its all fun until we get back to the office and argue over who to feature, really, it’s no joke.

Its always a challenge, so much talent, so many different points of view and definitions of fashion, so many techniques and inspirations, silhouettes and patterns and prints.

Amid a sea of talent, Alexandra Paul stood out. Not usually a fan of a shade I can only describe as dusty rose, it was somewhat refreshing to see a toned down colour palette in different silhouettes. The eye catcher was evening wear which at first glance looked like a gown turned out to be a jumpsuit cut down to the belly button something J.Lo might be interested in. The second thing to catch my eye was the print, again, as someone who lives in black on black, prints can be a scary thing, but this print was so unique and unlike anything I’ve

seen before, this then is an instant standout from the crowd.

I always find menswear to be a bit repetitive, there’s only so much you can do. Which is why Zhejun Li stood out so much. Too many ideas can be too much, from at a glance this appeared to be 90’s, street with some slight Eastern influences but turned out to be breathtaking. The statement jackets were entirely different yet cohesive and you could tell came from the same collection, also so beautiful, I’d happily have walked out in any of them, mixed with shorts and leggings. Perfect for the high fashion gym goers out there. I’d also like to point out the jacket that caught my eye was pastel pink with camouflage accents, proving that head to toe black isn’t always a winning formula.

It’s always a delight to go see the Northumbria Show, it’s a shame only one can be selected, you’ll leave truly inspired and I can’t wait to see what next years has in store l

LETS FACE IT

If we’re honest, there aren’t many of us out there over 25 that haven’t had some kind of help in the beauty department, but the fact is that you may have had varying degrees of success. I have a dear friend who had to have filler removed (dissolved) because her lips that were originally quite lovely went lumpy and awful. For this reason when you find “that person” that’s good at nonsurgical facial treatments, you should never change, don’t go for the cheapest, don’t go for the fanciest, personally I would go with a recommendation.

Having Rachel, who is a qualified nurse, come visit you at home is our tip for a discreet revamp. Specializing in anti wrinkle injections, dermal fillers, lip enhancement, skin resurfacing, Meso therapy, AQ derma stamp. She is our lady of the magic doctor’s bag and with free consultations really what do you have to lose? l

WHO’S HOMEWARD BOUND? ME ME ME!

Previously profiled in NE Love, Man Power is a local DJ and Music producer whose acclaim has grown exponentially over the last 4 years. Last year saw the launch of his music brand, Me Me Me. Initially launched as a record label (featuring contributions from other regional artists like Last Waltz, James Hadfield and Bird of Paradise, and global stars like Dj Tennis, Red Axes and Axel Boman), Me Me Me is now in the process of gradually revealing a series of global events in locations throughout Europe, Asia as well as North & South America.

Me Me Me recently announced their first ever event in Newcastle, as a homecoming of sorts, where Man Power presents his most ambitious line-up and concept to date.

August 27th sees Me Me Me team up with local promoters Ape-X to host the event at the newly opened Boiler Shop in the city centre, where they are to present an all day 12 hour musical marathon, noon to midnight. Headliners Hercules & Love Affair are one of the worlds most exciting and high profile live Disco Acts, returning to a position squarely in the limelight in anticipation of their imminent third studio album. Joining Hercules & Love Affair will be the world famous Horse Meat Disco, who are renowned for their brand of infectious party friendly disco, which sees them regularly invited to the worlds biggest and most prestigious festivals and club nights.

The line-up is completed by label artists Last Waltz, alongside Bird of Paradise, 2 acts who have seen their stars in ascendance in recent years, with a growing and devoted musical following both in

the north east and nationally. Also featuring all day gourmet food and guest ales, the event has been conceived to appeal to the widest range of music lovers. The noon till midnight scheduling promises an eclectic crowd ranging from Newcastle’s club kids, to an older generation of music lover to whom dark smoky clubs may slowly be becoming a distant memory to lovers of live music and followers of the headline artists l

Hardwick live returns this summer on the 18th of August at the beautiful Hardwick hall and with yet another belter of a line-up! It’s always been one of our favorite festivals, atmosphere wise there is no better. On my last visit I saw Adam Ant, The Jacksons, not to mention some of my favorite DJ’s and dearest friends.

TBH we thought that Mr Adamson and his team had outdone themselves on that occasion but it appears that it wasn’t the case and that for 2107 they have come back bigger and stronger with a line up that frankly we would have picked if we were in charge.

Ocean Colour Scene, Our Pete, Fun Lovin Criminals , Soul to Soul, Buzzcocks, Gabrielle to name but a few for Saturday 19th . We are already counting down the days.

The DJ line up includes some old favorites including Danny

Rampling and Brandon Block and of course Hardwick darlings Pete Wharrier and Rob Oxley.

Difficult to decide then if I will be crying (I get emotional) laughing, (there’s a great comedy line up), but singing (at the top of my voice) that’s a given; my last visit left me unable to speak for days after, and dancing (have you seen the DJ line up)? Yep there will be singing and dancing.

There will be, pop up restaurants, camping, glamping, and if all of this wasn’t mind blowing enough, it all kicks of on Friday August 18th with two tone Ska legends Madness, ‘It must be love love love’ Genius line up guys absolute genius! l

GOD I HATE HEN DO’S!

I’M ALL FOR PEOPLE CELEBRATING THEIR LAST NIGHT OF “FREEDOM” BUT THERE’S A LINE DRAWN AND IT DOESN’T NEED TO BE CROSSED.

This is what I’m thinking while I stand at the bar of my favourite drinking hole being prodded in the head by a 2ft inflatable penis: other wacky props like cock whistles, dick straws and learner plates are also in abundance.

I heard them before I saw them, oh the screeching! Then suddenly a door swings open like something from a western, they pour in, cluttering up the bar, all trying to get served at once, screaming and shrieking. That’s just the bloke’s from the stag do! I can honestly say I would happily have my anus waxed in a city centre shop window than be in a bar with a stag or a hen party. Let’s be truthful here 99% of the time stag and hen do’s are about getting that last neck on. You know that one you will regret walking down the aisle carrying your bouquet and your remorse. Or in the grooms case, sweating buckets while hoping that none of the lads drop you in it for feeling up that lass behind Digital after a few pints.

This is of course the very reason that stag and hen do’s aren’t in your hometown. They descend on poor unsuspecting towns and cities like ours by train or bus, armed with all the wit and charm of David Charlton. Usually champagne or cocaine fuelled, depending on your preference and your budget, but always with that famous motto, ‘what goes on tour stays on tour’ Oh aside from the photos on FB, having deleted the incriminating ones first obviously.

I’m all for people celebrating their last night of “freedom” but there’s a line drawn and it doesn’t need to be crossed. The

dreaded t-shirt, how lovely to see 14 extremely drunken people in matching outfits, so original, let’s have a role call shall we? Big dick Dave, Tits out Tommy, Shag happy Sheila etc. It wouldn’t be so bad if they were all contained (in a cage perhaps) but stag and hens for some reason all believe we want to join the action. Trust me people, don’t ask us to spank your mate, or kiss the hen, we actually for once prefer to miss out on this particular party, thanks anyway.

I really feel sorry for the bar staff that have to put up with this “banter, the things I’ve heard when these individuals have been denied service for being too drunk doesn’t bear repeating, and these demands for special treatment because your friend is getting married? We really don’t care!

I was on Blue Peter when I was 15 when I used to be a yo-yo-ist) but I don’t make a big deal of it do I? These parties are like watching animals, very very drunk animals, which even David Attenborough couldn’t narrate without having an aneurysm.

So I implore you dear stag and hens, treat bar staff and DJ’s with kindness, you know, it’s the little things like please and thank you and not asking for George Michael at a techno night!

Oh sorry, where are my manners? Good luck with the wedding, you’re going to need it! l

THE SPIRIT OF ADVENTURE IN NEWCASTLE…

A UNIQUE, quirky bar which brings to life the glorious age of the Victorian explorers and adventurers has now opened its doors in Newcastle.

Colonel Porter’s Tavern, Botanical Garden and Rhum Bar –named after the creator of Newcastle Brown Ale, Colonel J Porter – will take drinkers and diners on a magical journey to the past.

The former Canteen and Cocktails bar, at Milburn House, Dean Street, has been transformed and is now packed with everything from a giant flowering tree which spreads out across the ceiling to stuffed animal heads and a roll of honour featuring numerous wellknown North East names.

Settings in the bar range from a Victorian-style drawing room to a secret rum bar hidden behind a bookcase which leads to Archie’s lab which will be used for private functions and also to host rum tasting masterclasses.

The bar has been created by John Adamson, of Ramside Estates,

which also owns Ramside Hall Hotel, Golf and Spa and Hardwick Hall Hotel near Durham.

Along with a range of cask ales, the bar will offer more than 100 rums and a full programme of unusual events including ‘tipsy teas’ and talks by politicians, explorers and entrepreneurs. Around 25 jobs have been created, with an undisclosed sum invested in creating the transformed bar. “I honestly don’t believe the North East will have seen anything like this before,” said Mr Adamson.

“Colonel Porter’s really is a one-off and we’ve pulled out all the stops to create a truly unique bar which will offer a memorable experience for everyone that visits.

“I’m convinced that anyone who walks through the door will be completely blown away by what they see and what we’ve created.”

We couldn’t agree more l

COCKTAILS, CUISINE, CULTURE… SOHE BRUNCH

BRUNCH – SERVED AT WEEKENDS, USUALLY CLOSER TO LUNCH THAN BREAKFAST.

It’s no secret we adore Sohe. We were absolutely dying for the weekend to come along and not just so we could party on this occasion. We had therefore booked in to try Sohe’s famous brunch, safe in the knowledge that one thirty in the afternoon is perfect hungry time whether or not you’ve been partying the night before and need the hair of the dog, or a special occasion or you just want to treat yourself to an alternative from the usual Sunday lunch. This particular Sunday was to prove great fun as we had taken along with us the worlds hardest to please, fussiest eater. Testing times for the staff at one of our favourite hangouts. Were they phased? I think not.

So Sunday brunch! On this occasion we were three and turned up more or less on time and to a lovely welcome as always. We were immediately shown to our table and wine and beers appeared

very shortly afterwards. The menu is absolutely vast and includes some European style food alongside Sohe’s specialty Asian fusion. My first choice was crispy squid that came with an Indian rice noodle salad with chilli, lime and Palm sugar dressing. The squid was cooked to perfection whilst the batter was deliciously fluffy, melt in the mouth seafood. Mr Fussyeater skipped the starter in favour of saving some space for dessert. While Charlie went for the Tom Yum Gai, a gorgeous hot and sour soup with chicken and prawn dumplings. Let me tell you, the Gai certainly was yum! Unfortunately, Charlie was incapable of discerning what the word ‘soup’ meant and the waiter called out his order several times whilst he gazed off into the distance.

For the main course, Charlie chose the steak and fries. A classic choice you really can’t go wrong with - especially when

NEL VE.CO.UK / TWENTY

the chefs are meticulous about getting it perfect. The melt-inyour-mouth beef was so succulent and satisfying that he wouldn’t share. He did point out that caramelised shallots were the perfect accompaniment, as were the fries, but in all honestly, I think he was struggling with the generous size of the steak.

I went vegetarian and had the Avocado and Spinach Benedict - a decadent display consisting of a toasted breakfast muffin, spinach, avocado and silky Hollandaise sauce. I was transported back to Melbourne. This was Aussie food at its finest.

As for Paul (AKA Fussyeater) he decided to go for a Sohe Burger; a 100% prime beef burger with a toasted brioche bun, gem lettuce, fresh tomato, cheese, Asian slaw and fries. It smelled absolutely fantastic. Inevitably, my food envy set in but two meals in one sitting does seem excessive even if it is brunch.

There was a sight lull in the proceedings while we tried to decide if we could manage dessert, this is where Fussyeater upped his game and ordered Sticky Toffee Pudding; a beautiful light sponge decorated with edible flowers and served with vanilla ice cream and toffee sauce. You know what they say ‘You can’t have your cake and eat it’ and that is so true so I stole his dessert and simply said “The proof of the pudding is in the eating” and boy was that good pudding l

AROUND THE EMPIRE TIPSY TEAS

Summer has arrived in all her glory and has driven us back on to Osborne Road to find out what’s happening?.

Imagine our delight to stumble upon something new at one of our favorites, Tipsy Tea? What would that be?

A sensory trip around the old empire without leaving the comfort of your chair? Sounds pretty much perfect to me so lets see.

FYI this has to be booked in advance, Craig and I rocked up at 97& Social to a warm welcome a window seat and an introduction to the lovely Courtney, and some great tips. Great start; we decided to go with an ‘Old Blighty’ and why not, Tanqueray gin, elderflower liqueur, orange marmalade and Earl Grey and old fashioned lemonade. There is only one word to describe this concoction, that word is divine. Two maybe divinely dangerous, its so moreish that you will be disappointed when the tea pots empty.

Served in a beautiful China teapot with cups and saucers, the fog of London town wow factor is created by adding dried ice so

that it looks exactly like the teapot is steaming. Then there was well; the tea, we chose salmon and soft cheese, ham and mustard and chicken and avocado sandwiches. That was only the bottom of the cake stand; we then worked our way up through fresh warm scones with clotted cream and strawberry and blackcurrant jam. The top layer was miniature chocolate brownies, coconut sponge cake and pastel coloured macaroons accompanied by fresh summer berries.

I loved the whole idea of Tipsy Tea, but in this instance (as my face book can testify) it was very elegant, extremely well executed, fun and just, fabulous.

Served Friday to Sunday between noon and 6pm Tipsy Tea, Go on you know you want to! l

TRY THAI

When you step inside Zaap you feel like you have been transported into a Bangkok street food market, with all its magical hustle and bustle, neon lights and funky tuk tuks, they have done a fabulous job of recreating a Thai street market but the authenticity doesn’t end here.

We decided to go for a Bangkok platter (a selection of five popular street nibbles) as our starter and were already steeping ourselves in the atmosphere by trying a Siam Southside and a Phuket On The Beach cocktail, all this while having enjoyed a beautiful sunny day and sitting in a tuk tuk. I think my favourite from this plate was probably the crispy wonton but in fairness all five of these tasters were great and came with three dipping sauces one spicy chili, one satay and a third that I think was a mixture of soy sauce and spices.

So on to the next course, I decided to go Khow Pad Poh Taek, hot and spicy fried rice and seafood, which appears on the menu

as very spicy but thankfully I took advice and went for it a little less. This dish was perfectly cooked with just the right amount of kick and such a large serving that I took the second half of mine home, yeah it was that good. For Darin it was Pad Kee Mao, spicy fried rice noodles which he chose to have with chicken, he polished off the whole lot, so enough said I guess. This dish was reasonably spicy but was helped down by the traditional Thai beer Singha.

I think its fair to say that we were super impressed of course by the surroundings, but also by incredibly helpful staff. Zaap is a lot of fun, the food is fab if you have been to Thailand it will invoke great memories, if you haven’t been, go along, have some great food, take selfies with said food and pretend. VIRGO: It’s make your mind up time. You have one foot firmly stuck in your comfort zone and the other itching to break free into unchartered territory. If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you have always got, you know you owe it to yourself an adventure. Your ship is coming in, swim out to meet it.

LIBRA: You have been in the eye of the storm, but this month things s become a little calmer. You may be battered and bruised emotionally, don’t expect to be healed over night. One thing is certain; this tricky terrain changed you. Growth and insight mean now you begin to see who you may become.

SCORPIO: Time to dump the baggage. You are so bogged down by problems, both yours and others that you cannot see where you are going. Lighten your load let others take responsibility for themselves. Find what it is you need to let go you must travel light.

SAGITTARIUS: This month sees you check what is real and what is illusion. You have so many options and offers that you are confused, but remember if something seems to good to be true, it generally is. All that glitters is not gold, look beyond the surface.

CAPRICORN: Feeling as if you’re in the dark? Someone may be trying to pull the wool over your eyes causing you to doubt yourself and possibly even your sanity. Trust your gut! Eventually all will be revealed and any fears will fall away. When you cannot see, the best course of action is to ‘feel’ your way.

AQUARIUS: They say the course of true love never runs smooth, this month this saying is written for you. You are feeling the love, but must make a decision; do you follow your heart? Or listen to logic? Your head says be cautious, your heart says love freely. This time follow your heart

PISCES: Taking a walk on the wild side? Temptation lurks around every corner you feel compelled to do things that probably aren’t good for you! Check yourself before you wreck yourself, your primal urges and lusts are bubbling to the surface, stay strong, take care.

ARIES: Getting all the admiration this month? Recognition and being rewarded for just being fabulous? Everyone seems to be singing your praises giving you confidence and a renewed self-belief. Enjoy it, but don’t let it go to your head, smugness is not a good look for you this summer.

TAURUS: Get that motor running, head out on the high way. You’re on the move physically or metaphorically, either way there’s just no stopping you. You have taken the reigns and are steering yourself confidently towards your dreams. Eyes on your destination don’t look back; you are at last in control of your destiny.

GEMINI: Woe betides anyone who tries to step in your way or step on your toes this month. You are feeling feisty, fearless and focused no-one can block your path. Your mind is sharp and your tongue sharper, you are prepared to use both. Try not to cut corners in your haste; this may leave you in a bit of a mess. Think before you act.

CANCER: An ending could lead you to a brand new beginning this month. Something is past its sell by date and there is no point in clinging on to it! You cannot breathe life into something that has died a natural death, be graceful, don’t look back, your life is about to be transformed for the better, just wait and see.

LEO: Fear and insecurities are causing you to feel stuck this month. You feel like you are between a rock and a hard place and don’t know what to do next. Fear you often causes mistakes, so be patient, let things show themselves as they really are rather than allowing craziness to cloud your judgment.
