Gallops more like! The first day of spring is only a matter of weeks away. That’s great news right? And there’s more, this is issue 26? That’s 26 times you have picked us up and taken us home, please continue, we love it. In this issue we have been cozying up with some amazing local musicians, and in general rubbing shoulders with the north east elite. It’s dreadful what we have to put ourselves through just to keep you entertained. Putting aside for a moment though, all the joking and general hysteria about how tough January and February are. You step back sometimes and take stock and you just think, yeah working hard for something you don’t care about that’s stress, but working hard for something you love, that’s just passion. So thanks again to all of you, from all of us for the love and of course your time, we know it is your most precious commodity, you can’t budget for it, you have no idea how long its going to last. # I WOKE UP LIKE THIS CROSS MY HEART AND WELL… ERRR I FORGET THE NEXT BIT
With my own business to run and a pretty hectic social life, it's hard to find time to wash my hair, let alone drag out my makeup bag. So when I heard about semi-permanent make-up expert Ruth Turnbull AKA Ruby Red, I was desperate to give her a try. My eyebrows are sparse - the result of overzealous plucking - and pencilling them in every day is a hassle I can do without. Plus, I have always envied those women with beautiful defined lips and a perfect cupids bow, which is another of Ruth’s specialities so I decided to go for the double whammy. Semi-permanent make-up lasts between nine and 18 months. Most of the products Ruth uses are natural, mineral-based and non-toxic, meaning treatments are hypoallergenic. First, she used a regular eyebrow pencil to shape and colour my brow - and once I was happy with the colour and shape, a topical anaesthetic was applied to numb the skin. Next, a fine needle was used to tattoo individual hairs - more irritating than painful. The process was more or less the same for the lip blush. Ruby (I insist on calling her that) we know I mean Ruth NEL VE.CO.UK / TEN
right? Drew a fine line with a dark pencil to make sure I was happy with the shape of my lip, while we discussed colour. I surprised myself by going for a rose pink, especially since I’m a red lippy girl, night and day. The procedures weren’t comfortable, but it didn't hurt, and they took about 45 minutes each. When I looked in the mirror, I was bowled over. My eyebrows are perfect and my lips, while still slightly swollen looked great. I was warned about scabbing or soreness and given aftercare advice. No sunbeds no facial scrubs or peels, its common sense really, a couple of weeks later, the overall effect was fantastic and natural looking. That said, the results do fade and, after a year, it is worth having a touch-up treatment, but I will be back before that in six weeks time as that is the normal healing time and Ruth likes to get you in for a check up top up! I don’t know what to do with all of the extra time I have in the mornings. Yoga anyone? l

I have to give Colonel Porters a big thank you and shout out for amazing customer service. The attention to detail by the staff is unbelievable. We have done photo shoots previously in this place so I don’t think I need to spend to much time telling you all how gloriously quirky it is. It’s not just that people love this place. I have had friends who I think really understand food tell me that this is indeed the place to been seen in. Such a great experience and quality great British products to boot. Delicious award winning handcrafted with love British meat pies as well as many other British favorites. I had the fish and chips and it was fantastic! Pan fried cod, crushed potatoes and buttered leeks my fish was crispy yet light. This is seriously posh fish and chips. Colonel Porter loves his home comforts. I think that if you walk in to such a beautiful setting to the dulcet tones of Alice Grace its pretty difficult to imagine that you’re afternoon might turn out anything less than perfect. Arriving late as always, I missed out on the Bloody Mary trolley! Boo! But seeing the menu for Sunday lunch (now only once a month due to the fact they have this incredible entertainment built in) the idea that the starters on the first part of the menu are called “Pick Me Ups” is great especially if you’ve been having ‘it large’ the night before. So Pick Me Up’s or Light Bites it is, and nothing can pick you up like a Fruit Pastille gimlet, its like drinking Rowntree’s Fruit Pastilles drowned in gin. Next, the starters were incredibly interesting too, for him, home made sausage roll with piccalilli and HP Sauce, for me chicken liver parfait with plum orange chutney with crispy toast. I cant help it I’m going to have to tell you that whether you choose beef, which he did or lamb, which I did you get as an accompaniment, goose fat roast potatoes, maple syrup and whole grain mustard roast vegetables, savoy cabbage with pancetta (of which we could’ve NEL VE.CO.UK / EIGHTEEN
eaten a bowl of BTW) buttery creamy mash, home made Yorkshire puddings and when I say proper gravy, I mean proper gravy. The wine? Divine. Although fortified by the fabulous food we were still feeling slightly fragile from the night before, so we even went for dessert. A great pallet cleaner, lime berry infused cream, I’m just pretending to be healthy here. The homemade biscotti was the sweet sin behind the sharpness of the lime. The sticky toffee pudding with salted caramel sauce was so good it made me want to do things with it that would probably be a sin in other countries. So there we have it! If you're looking for a little sample of real America then look no further. While nursing a hangover with a Bloody Mary in No28 I stumbled across Meat:Stack and have been their biggest fan ever since, telling everyone who'll listen that it is in fact the best burger in the city, so I decided it was time I introduced Juin to them. After staring at the menu for five or ten minutes I selected the Yellowstone and the Lower East burgers. If the double cheeseburgers weren't succulent enough, adding fried onions, baconnaise, a hash brown and fixings to it and it'll truly make your mouth water. For the second option, the Lower East, again mouthwatering double cheeseburgers, this time dripping in thousand island dressing, sauerkraut, pastrami and fixings and packed just the right amount of punch to have a little bit of spice without overpowering the incredible meat flavour. Being made to order and prepared in front of you really makes NEL VE.CO.UK / TWENTY
the difference, the burgers are unquestionably the juiciest I have ever encountered, loaded with perfect toppings to the perfect melt in the mouth sensation! I was drooling before I even left the stall in the Grainger Market and on route back to the office couldn't resist a few handfuls of the perfectly crisp beef dripping fries, the perfect accompaniment. It's safe to say the Meat:Stack is my go to burger place, and after seeing them popping up at different parties and events over the summer, I'm pretty comfortable saying that my "Best Burger in Newcastle" review is shared by many l One word of advice, well two actually, HIGHLY ADDICTIVE! THE CAT THAT GOT THE CREAM OH AND THE COFFEE N FISH N BURGER N SUNDAY LUNCH Recently returned from Oz, and feeling pretty miserable about it, I happened to pop in to Harvest in Jesmond, desperate for a decent coffee, a Flat White to be exact which actually originated in Australia.There are several things about the "flat white" that hooks you, its rich flavour, velvety milk texture and the slightly cooler temperature making for an exceptionally pleasing drink. We all know of course that OCC are no slouches when it comes to coffee but breakfast at Harvest is a delight too, after their avocado smash and eggs, I started the day as happy as any I spent in Melbourne or Sydney! I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say this is the best Flat White I have come across in Newcastle to date! Shortly after this Craig's found his fave burger (Meat Stack) in the Grainger Market of all places, of course I went with him,, he was right they are amazing, then I found 'those' fish n chips in St Peters Basin, we are just spoiled and we still think that the prize for best Sunday lunch should go Bon Bar, but hey you lot if you think we are wrong or have missed someone out, be sure to let us know, you know where we are. SPANIARDS TO FISH N CHIPS! ISN’T THAT A BIT COALS TO NEWCASTLE?
You would have thought so wouldn’t you? However having spent half of my life on the edge of the Med myself I was determined to prove, not only that fish and chips deserver their fame as the nations favourite but that the fish was in fact at least as good if not as abundant. Dilemma, I could have taken my lovely guest (first time visitor to our Northern shores) to some swanky, fancy restaurant, god knows there are enough around now. Ever the risk taker though I decided on fish n chips. Don’t get me wrong it was not my plan to take him to the corner chippy. I had in fact decided on the Merchant Tavern and as always there was method in my madness. Firstly the food is great but its also in St Peters Basin so its quite picturesque there is water and there are boats. Box ticketing everywhere, in fact, aside from the freezing weather, it ticked all the boxes. As it turned out the Merchant Tavern offer all kinds of entertainment, not just great food. Check out the Bar Wall. The staff were unbelievable courteous I have always appreciated that NEL VE.CO.UK / TWENTY4
talent for knowing when to approach and when to let you get on with your food. As it was a cool evening we both went for the parsnip soup warm creamy clearly made on site. Its fair to say that I have had a few fish and chips in my life so I went for a rib eye steak which came with homemade fries and huge meaty mushrooms. For Adolfo of course the highly recommended cod and chips. In his words Moby Dick and chips, golden battered beautiful North Sea food. Served with both minted mushy peas and tartare sauce. I rest my case; we have come a long way since we first invaded Benidorm, at least now one brave soul in Alicante will dare to say, actually the food in the UK is good and fish n chips are fab. The Merchant Tavern turned out to be the perfect welcome to the North East, its everything we are, proud quirky friendly and very very British. We do love a Mackem around here, it's great to hear you played so much on Radio 6 (we're addicted to Lauren Laverne's show) is Count It Up the first release from your new album? D. Yeah, that’s the first song released from the new album. C. OK great, Is this a song about counting your blessings? It makes us smile every time we hear it, so was it your intention with this one to make a proper 80's sounding pop song? D. I’m not sure counting your blessing is quite the right phrase. I suppose it’s about privilege and about looking beyond your own experiences with a bit of generosity. We didn’t go out of our way to make it sound like the 80s but I did write it on a synth from the 80s so I’m not surprised it went that way. I like a lot of 80s pop music. C. So do we, We've seen an old video where you talk about how difficult it is to talk about complicated issues via pop songs, do you still feel the same way? From the sound of the new album you seem to be in a good place. NEL VE.CO.UK / TWO
D. I do think it’s difficult to write about complicated things in pop songs, and through music generally. I don’t think music is a very explanatory medium - it’s better for questions than for answers. A good place? Hmm… there’s a lot of anger in the record and a lot of sadness but we tend not to write conspicuously gloomy music so maybe that’s hidden to a degree. C. How do you think your music has changed since Phase 1 in 2004 - 2007? D. I think we’ve become more confident. When we started making Field Music records we had no idea what we were doing and we were very hard on ourselves because of that. Now, it feels like we’ve made tons of records so we can be a bit surer that we’re on the right track without having to have an existential crisis about every harmony. We know that whatever we do will sound like us so we don’t have to try to make it sound like us. C. After your first UK tour in 4 years, you went Stateside and toured some major cities in America, how did they react to your newer music? Also, while we're
on the subject of touring, what's the wildest thing that's ever happened while travelling? D. The response was mostly similar to here - songs like Noisy Days and Disappointed go down really well because there’s something to hold onto straight away. We’ve never been very good at winning people over who aren’t sure but those songs kind-of do the job for us. We’re not really a wild band. Our tour stories tend to be like classic English comedies of manners. C. How hard is it for a North East indie band to get signed to a label? D. I have no idea. The music industry right now is very different to when we made our first record and we’d already had a few formative experiences by then. I still mostly think that if you make something really great then someone will want to help you release it, but now more than ever, that whole process becomes a lot easier if you can record and tour cheaply. C. You've been with Memphis Industries since the very beginning and recording on almost a yearly basis, do
you feel any pressure to keep putting records out? D. Not really. Both me and Peter feel a pressure to write and record because it makes us happy. We get itchy if we’re not making stuff so even if we’re not busy with Field Music records, we end up being busy with other music.
C. Our dear friend Graeme (GrassiArt) not only features in your Talking Heads style 'Noisy Days Are Over' he's also designed your album cover AKA our magazine cover. What's the deal, is he part of the band now? D. He’s pretty close to being in the band! We’ve known Graeme for years. He’s a
good friend and we’ve both really enjoyed watching his art flourishing. He’s also a total character. Our lives would have been significantly less interesting without Grassi. There is something very honest about working with wood and there is candour and calmness about this particular artist that makes you look at what he does in a different way. Yea, Matty makes skateboards (amazing skateboards) nonetheless. The quality of the work will never be in question, although in all honesty to have a piece of his work and actually skate on it seems to me at least a bit of a travesty but then again, I’m not a skateboarder, never have been. One thing that is apparent is that somehow there are strange comparisons between Big Aye and NE Love, fiercely independent and Northern for a start. It's more than that though I have started to lose count of the amount of clients I have visited where proudly displayed behind NEL VE.CO.UK / SIX

Speaking of a new line up, who's new to the band? Everyone apart from me, there was a bit of an abrupt ending and a few years ago. I had a little girl and wanted to watch her grow up, so I had to prioritise things, in the meantime I was sitting on a lot of music I had already written. The older members of the band went off touring the world and doing their own thing, so the line up has completly changed and we've got new musician who are great, so rehearsals are going really well and everyones working hard. What have you been up to in the 6 NEL VE.CO.UK / TEN
years of… shall we say, hibernation? Working, Watching my daughter grow, very little music if Im honest. I have had a return to normality after a errrr lets just say slightly hedonistic lifestyle, I've learned my lesson now though and I won't be off down that road again. (Laughing) I must be mental doing this again! We love the new video, I'd even go as far as saying we are slightly obsessed, who is it by? and is this a first time collaboration? Its a guy called Ollie Rillands, he's a local lad, we didn't hunt anyone down, we put a call to action on Facebook and he was recommended a few times, we wanted something abstract and worked together on references, including a video from the Baltic then he put his twist on it and were really happy with the outcome. So the new single is called 'Goodbye' shouldn't it be hello after such a long time away? (Laughs) I guess but the next single is a
double A side called 'Wait' and its more of a concept, 'Goodbye' is a break up song about the ups and downs of a break up on the other hand 'Wait' is more about when you know things aren't right but you stay anyway, sort of how things are done, not even necessarily the break from a partner but the end of a friendship, Going from being very important, to not being in your life anymore, thats why its being released as a double A side. Before I let you get back to your day, is there anything else you'd like to add? None of this reincarnation, yes! I like that, lets stick with that word, was planned. I just got off the sofa while watching Coronation Street and started making music and sharing it. Its great to be back, the old fans got really excited and wanted the band back. Get Carter director Mike Hodges will be back in the region this spring for a special screening of the classic. Hodges, whose 1971 crime thriller starring Michael Caine is now a cult favourite, is to be one of the star attractions at the inaugural Newcastle International Film Festival. March 29 will see the 85-year-old be back in the heart of the region where he shot the film that made his name and where he will open the Newcastle International Film Festival with a showing of the only remaining 35mm copy of Get Carter. It has been announced that Hodges will also talk about the film at the first-day event which will be attended by celebrity guests whose identities are currently under wraps. The news will delight not just Get Carter fans but all North East film buffs in the region as excitement builds over the debut festival whose special guests will also include the North East-born awardwinning screenwriter Peter Flannery and director Neil Marshall. The March 29-April 1, four day festival programme will screen NEL VE.CO.UK / FOURTEEN
all genres of films and events at venues across Newcastleupon-Tyne, including not just cinemas but also galleries, restaurants, pubs and bars. Since the first reveal of the ambitious festival last summer - at an event attended by Hollywood actress Caroline Goodall and local favourite Craig Conway the festival team have received more than 2,000 film entries from over 90 countries around the world. Boston film director (currently running the Boston Sci Fi Festival) has whittled down the submissions with the ever growing team. Delivering a wideranging programme featuring independents, award-winners, world premieres, shorts - including a British short film which was just been nominated for an Oscar - and a 4K digital restoration of Night of the Living Dead to mark its 50-year anniversary where ticket

Besides its international focus, the festival is set to be a showcase for North East talent in the region with Neil Marshall back on home turf for a screening and chat about his 2008 action hit Doomsday and Jarrow-born Peter Flannery set to talk about his ground-breaking TV series Our Friends in the North which is having a marathon screening. Jill Halfpenny and Denise Welch will be making appearances at the festival too. The film programme will be screened throughout the city, including the Tyneside Cinema, Cineworld, Side Cinema, The Holy Biscuit and Cluny 2; and across the river at Vue Gateshead, with other venues across the region to be confirmed. Events will also be hosted at The Assembly Rooms, Aveika, Colonel Porters, The Mining Institute, The Biscuit Factory and Newcastle Civic Centre as well as at Gateshead College, major sponsors of the inaugural festival which was launched in Cannes last year. Ambassador of the festival and Schindler’s List star Caroline Goodall will be back to host a question and answer session following a retrospective of the work of Indian actor Om Puri along with workshops with world famous directors, producers and actors. This is a chance for aspiring talent in the region to learn from the best. North and South actor Richard Armitage is expected to attract fans in Newcastle as the star of Urban and the Shed Crew featuring music by Noel Gallagher - among the films set to have a first official screening at the festival. Another will be transgendertheme film This is Everything: Gigi Gorgeous, by Oscar-winning documentary filmmaker Barbara Kopple. Festival president Jacqui Miller Charlton said: “As the opening date moves ever closer of the first ever international film festival that Newcastle, and indeed the North East, has ever held, it’s scary and exciting in equal measure. WHAT ABOUT SOCIALISM? AV Festival is a leading festival of contemporary art, film and music which is based in the North East of England. The Festival, which takes place every two years, showcases innovate and experimental artists who engage with current ideas from modern art and wider society. George Orwell’s 1937 novel The Road to Wigan Pier laid the foreground down for what we consider modern-day socialism. The rise of capitalism in the Western world, however, has prompted the question: ‘What about Socialism?’. This is the key theme of this year’s AV Festival; an event focused on answering this question through the medium of art. The theme of the Festival changes biennially, ranging from compelling topics such as: life sciences, slowness and extraction. NEL VE.CO.UK / TWENTY
The theme of this year seems more than fitting given the intense political climate at present. With the Labour party seeing the highest increase in its vote share since 1945, socialism has become a current and engaging subject matter, particularly for the North East. This has inspired a range of artists, such as Raqs Media Collective, Bianca Baldi and Vitalij Strigunkov, to draw upon their own experiences of place, people and protagonists in considering what Socialism means to them. The exhibition takes place in five venues across Newcastle and Gateshead, featuring work by nine artists. The festival will arrive at the North East from Saturday 3rd – Saturday 31st March. JUST LIKE EVERYBODY ELSE DOES? I can’t really remember my sexual awakening. I think it may have been a Spice Girl’s poster I had in my room or Angela Lansbury in Bedknobs and Broomsticks? But hormones have no rhyme or reason I suppose. I have done some pretty crazy things in my youth. I suppose I can blame that pesky testosterone, have you ever tried to say a safe word with a rubber ball stuffed in your mouth? Trust me, Zimbabwe sounds exactly the same as put that paddle down now! Hormones are funny things. It’s easy to forget that our actions have real consequences and effect other people. This was apparent as I recently consoled a girl sobbing at Pelaw metro station, her boyfriend had decided that skateboarding was way more important than she was. As we know tact has never been my strong point I couldn’t stop proclaiming “That’s nothing, you’re in for a world of hurt as you get older”. I hope she realised I meant that just because some spotty geek has decided to try be Tony Hawk , that this will one day be a forgotten memory and not worth the tears that were running down her cheeks. (She was fine by the way, and I missed two Metros. Watch out dear Deirdre, I’m coming for you) And what’s this on the horizon? The celebration of the heart -Valentine’s Day!
