“Sportsmanship and Empowerment”: NBSPI PASIKLABAN 2023 Commences on a High Note!
The four divisions kick-started the intramurals with their excellent skills and competitive spirits as they took part in the club day as well as intramurals opening on October 21, 2023 at New Brighton School of the Philippines, Inc. (NBSPI). The day started with a buzz of excitement as students from different schools visited NBSPI and were welcomed by the creative booths and displays set by various NBSPI clubs and organizations. Signifying NBSPI as a home to unique talents and creativity. As the afternoon progressed, enthusiastic cheers, passion for victory, and sheer anticipation for the Intramurals 2023 reverberated among the crowd at the NBSPI open court.
With a theme “Unleashing Brightonian Spirit Through Flames of Sportsmanship and Empowerment”, this year's intramurals commenced with the parade competition, preliminaries, and opening remarks delivered by Mr. Erwin Agbon. Succeeded by the taking of oath of sportsmanship, lighting of torch and bonfire ceremony which officially declared the opening of the Intramurals 2023. Meanwhile, the Socio-Cultural club got the crowd on their feet with their dazzling performances during their intermission number.

The day concluded with the closing remarks given by the SSC Vice President, Nelben Acebo, and the announcement of winners wherein Dauntless Foxes secured their well-deserved victory in the yell and mass dance competition. In addition, the Golden Lions brought glory to their division by bagging the championship crown in the division shirt competition whereas Strutting Peacocks truly Afterwards, the four divisions, soared high as they emerged as namely Dauntless Foxes (Division champions in the parade 1), Golden Lions (Division 2), competition. NBSPI PASIKLABAN 2023 - A CRITICAL EXAMINATION OF SUCCESS AND CHALLENGES
The burden of academic loads, particularly near exam week, adds an additional layer of pressure on students. In planning future events, consideration should be given to aligning major activities with the academic calendar to alleviate stress. The controversy surrounding judges' credibility is a matter of concern. While budget constraints are acknowledged, allocating resources to secure qualified judges is imperative. This editorial does not diminish the capabilities of past judges but advocates for a more competitive and justified event that upholds the school's name.
The annual PASIKLABAN, orchestrated by the Supreme Student Council of NBSPI, is a spectacle that unveils the diverse talents and skills of Brightonians in various fields. However, as the echoes of the recently concluded PASIKLABAN 2023 still resonate, it is crucial to reflect on the voices behind the event. Has it truly created sportsmanship and camaraderie, or has it become a mandatory endeavor for students? Are Brightonians satisfied with the outcome? The event undoubtedly concluded with a resounding success, earning applause from participants and spectators alike. Yet, like any substantial undertaking, PASIKLABAN 2023 faced its share of challenges. Issues such as changes in schedule, concerns about judges' credibility, unparticipative members, and the burden of academic loads surfaced, raising questions about the overall satisfaction of the Brightonian community. Schedules, a fundamental aspect of any event, should be adhered to meticulously. While unforeseen circumstances may arise, effective communication and periodic evaluations can mitigate disruptions, ensuring a smoother experience for all participants.

The issue of student participation, or lack thereof, raises questions about the relevance of certain activities. While the Student Council made efforts to align the events with students' preferences, addressing the participation gap is crucial. Removing less appealing activities and scheduling major events strategically can enhance participation. Despite these challenges, PASIKLABAN 2023 succeeded in providing a platform for students to showcase their talents and enjoy their time. New activities brought students together and celebrated the diversity within the Brightonian community. The lapses observed present opportunities for improvement in the next iteration of PASIKLABAN. Looking ahead, the writer, in conjunction with the board, calls for an improved PASIKLABAN. Not perfection, but an event that leaves a lasting impact and is missed by students. Credit is extended to the Supreme Student Council, chairpersons, faculty, and the institution for their roles in the event. In closing, this editorial emphasizes the importance of embracing constructive criticism for continuous improvement.

Homework has long been part of the educational system as a mechanism to consolidate knowledge, augment learning capabilities, and stimulate active learning. It also cultivates communication between pupils and parents and fosters collaboration among students. But is it beneficial for everyone, or does it merely exacerbate the struggles of disadvantaged students? A study conducted by Stanford University discovered that 56% of students identified homework as a primary stressor, resulting in sleep deprivation, headaches, fatigue, and even weight loss. Extracurricular activities and social interactions — which rejuvenate students’ minds and bodies— are frequently forfeited for homework. This forfeiture can culminate in feelings of isolation and a deficiency in a support network. Above all, older students balancing homework and part-time employment find it increasingly challenging to harmonize school and other responsibilities. Without opportunities to socialize and unwind, stress levels can surge, impacting life at school and home. Hence, homework can add strains on students’ physical and mental well-being. In addition, studies suggest that the efficacy of homework is contingent on socioeconomic status. Pupils from wealthy families exhibit enhanced academic prowess with increased assignments, thereby acquiring more knowledge. Conversely, homework is not much of a help to the academic performance of underprivileged children. This discrepancy is ascribed to the capability of children to access modern technologies and the internet. Moreover, after a comprehensive day of learning, students can experience burnout due to excessive homework. This exhaustion can precipitate a decline in homework completion or an overdependence on parental aid, negating the advantages of homework and leading to a drop in grades. This issue is particularly prominent among disadvantaged students, who often lack literate parents to assist them. \ Despite these apprehensions, some contend that homework cultivates appropriate study habits, selfdiscipline, and time-management skills.
It reinforces and develops skills imparted in class, promotes communication between parents and students, and assists teachers in verifying lesson comprehension. Intriguingly, students with lower academic achievements benefit more from homework than their high-achieving peers. In response to the detrimental effects of homework, several “No Homework” bills have been proposed in the Philippines. Some of these bills are Senate Bill No. 966, House Bill No. 8243, and Senate Bill No. 1792. These bills aim to ban weekends and excessive homework to let students rest and recharge. However, none of these bills have received approval, leaving students wrestling with substantial assignments. In conclusion, while homework can offer certain advantages, these benefits are not universally experienced, particularly by students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Henceforth, it is crucial to consider the implications of excessive homework on all students, especially those facing socio economic challenges. Our educational strategies should aim not only to foster academic achievement but also to promote the holistic wellbeing of every student.

GOLDEN LIONS NILAMON ANG STRUTTING PEACOCKS UPANG MASUNGKIT NG GINTONG MEDALYA Umuwing kampyon ang Golden Lions Division 2 laban sa Division 4 strutting Peacock, dahil sa Iba't ibang angking abilidad at agwat ng mga iskor ng mga manlalaro, naghatid ito ng mainit na tension mula sa mga manonood. Matagumpay na nakamit ng Division 2 Golden Lions ang kampyonato kontra Division 4. Pinakamahusay na manlalaro na si Dipagan, ay nakakuha ng dalampo't walong puntos, sa kabuu-ang iskor na 6462.
DIVISION 4: MULING IWINAGAYWAY ANG BANDERA SA LARANGAN NG MEN’S VOLLEYBALL (3-1) Matapos manalo laban sa Division 1 Dauntless Foxes noong eliminasyon, nagpatuloy ang Division 4 Strutting Peacocks sa kampyonato laban sa Division 2 Golden Lions na umabot ng 4 set ng laro. Nanaig sa unang laban ang Division 2 na may puntos na 25-21. Napasakamay naman ng Division 4 ang ikalawang laban na may puntos na 25-19. Bakas ang pagod at mataas ang tensyon ang nangyari sa dalawang team. Nagpakitang gilas si Jasper Tan na naging dahilan ng pagkanalo ng Division 4 sa kampyonato ng balibol men.

GOLDEN LIONS' ROAR CLAIMS THEIR GOLD FOR INDIVIDUAL RUBIK'S CUBE The Golden Lions didn't waste any second to win the game among the animals in the Kingdom. The match started with clusters where the Cluster 1 is the Division 1 versus Division 4 while the Cluster 2 is the Division 2 against Division 3. All players were tasked to scramble their designated Rubik's cubes and had their positions exchanged to solve it. Dauntless Foxes finished first in cluster 1 and advanced to the championship with the Golden Lions, and Strutting Peacocks fought against Midnight Owls. The Owls earned the last place, followed by the Peacocks in 2nd, Dauntless Foxes sat first and The Lions stopped the time in seconds to roar victory.
PEACOCKS STRUT THEIR FEATHERS FOR THE SECOND RUBIK'S CUBE CATEGORY Peacocks blinded the Lions, Foxes, and Owls with their feathers as they flew first for the Rubik's cube's victory. The game started by letting the players scramble their designated Rubik’s cubes and one out of two participants in each division had their draw lots to where they would be assigned to solve the cube. All divisions gave their best aiming to be the greatest to swift the simplicity yet complexity of the Rubik's cube. Strutting Peacocks' Dave Firmeza and James Puda had great teamwork winning the match, Dauntless Foxes earned the 1st place, Golden Lions aimed for the 2nd place, and the 3rd place was grabbed by the Midnight Owls.

BACK-TO-BACK: GOLDEN LIONS REMAIN AS THE RULERS OF LAND OF DAWN
Writer : Judie Demello Photojournalist : Jan Diano The Finals of the Mobile Legends Bang Bang Tournament witness a spectacular best-of-three showdown between Division 2 Golden Lions and Division 4 Strutting Peacocks. The stage was set for an epic battle, as the reigning champions, the Golden Lions, sought to defend their crown while the ambitious Strutting Peacocks aimed to seize it. On October 25, 2023, under the brilliant lights of the NBSPI auditorium, the grand finale unfolded at 5:30 PM.
n game 1, within the first minute, the Golden Lions launched a bold invasion of the Strutting Peacocks' Molten Fiend, securing the first blood as Kiyo's Lunox took down Twilight's Lancelot during his contested attempt. Division 2's victory path became apparent as they claimed the first turtle and a triple kill from Kiyo. Division 4 sought recovery and secured the second lord, but the gap was already insurmountable. Division 2 clinched the win as they commanded the evolved Lord to march down the middle lane, dismantling Division 4's base. The game concluded with a score of 29-18, lasting 19 minutes and 57 seconds. Kiyo, with his impressive 11-5-9 KDA, secured the MVP title.
Game 2 showcased Division 4's early tempo-setting moments as Twilight's Fredrinn secured the first blood against Justine's Mathilda in the Gold lane. Yet, Mathilda's demise wasn't in vain as Terizla capitalized by destroying the 3rd turret in the EXP lane. Division 2's rapid rotations led to on-time turtle captures, leaving Division 4 in despair as they contested the turtle and lost, resulting in three deaths. As the Division 4 Strutting Peacocks attempted to defend their honor, a dazzling display of skill by Kiyo, the luminary of the Division 2 Golden Lions, stole the spotlight. With a masterful execution, Kiyo achieved a Maniac, showcasing his incredible prowess and unrelenting dominance. It ended with a score of 27-5, and the game lasted 12 minutes and 34 seconds. Division 2's core, SUPER YAGO, earned the MVP title with a 2-0-17 KDA. Division 2's shining moments arise from their remarkable support for one another. When a teammate needed assistance, backup was always swift and automatic. Fast rotations and an objective-focused approach were Division 2's keys to victory, suffocating Division 4 and securing every objective efficiently.
It was good communication and unity, especially trust that made us win. Mag-ingon sila na go lang, Jes, naa lang mi diri mag-back-up
emphasized GODDESS. Division 2, the Golden Lions, reasserted their dominance as not only the kings of the jungle but also the rulers of the Land of Dawn. They will return home as champions with the Gold medal. On the other side, Division 4, the Strutting Peacocks, demonstrated their prowess and will take home the Silver medal as the first runner-up. Division 2 expressed gratitude to their inspiring supporters and the professional players from GenSan who joined their journey.

BIG AS THEIR ELONGATED TAILS, STRUTTING PEACOCKS PROVE THEIR MIND The tension was palpable throughout the game of Brighton Henyo. The audience was kept at the edge of their seats as they struggled to hold their tongue to avoid coaching the team they're rooting for. All the players held their own and managed to not crack under pressure. However, only one team can be declared as champions. With shrewdness and immense focus, Division 4 Strutting Peacocks emerged victorious by guessing 7 words and earning 35 points in Brighton Henyo. Followed by Division 1 Dauntless Foxes who scored 25 points, 10 points behind the winning team. The two remaining Divisions, Division 2 and Division 3 both scored 20 points. A tie-breaking deduction of points was given to Division 3. For this reason, Division 2 Golden Lions earned the bronze and Division 3 Midnights Owls as the 4th placer.

Unang sumabak sa entablado ang Midnight Owl, sinundan naman ito ng Golden Lion, pangatlo ang Strutting Peacock at panghuli ang Dauntless Fox. Naghiyawan ang mga manonood sa pagpapamalas ng bawat kalahok ng kani-kanilang galing sa pagtatanghal. Naipakita din nila ang mga tinatagong talento sa pag arte.

During the first round, the Division 4 kickstarted the game as the leading team. Round after another, the eagerness of the team led the win of the group in a landslide; In the end topping the game with a score of 489, followed by Division 3 with 241, 235 for Division 2, and lastly, the Division 1 with a total of 134 points

MIDNIGHT OWL, ACE CAPUNO CROWNED AS NBSPI MX. Q&A 2023 This year's Mx. Q&A: Disney Princess Edition was filled with laughter and excitement. Each competitor pits their wits against the other, walks confidently, and displays their flair to win the title of Mx. Q and A 2023. Justine Moneva, from The Dauntless Foxes, portrays Aurora. Michael Cabatit, a Golden Lion, portrays Maleficent. Ace Daniel Capuno, from Midnight Owls as Ariel, and Christian Diamante, from Strutting as Raya.
Intelligence and beauty are showcased during the pageant, but only one is crowned. Golden Lions got the 3rd runner-up, Dauntless Foxes got the 2nd runner-up, Strutting Peacocks for the 1st runner-up, and Division 3 was hailed as the queen and crowned as Mx. Q and A 2023.

MENTAL HEALTH MATTERS: A HEALTHY DICUSSION
MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS FORUM: STUDENT EMPLOYEES Dinaluhan ng humigit-kumulang 100 Student-Employees ang isinagawang Mental Health Awareness Forum sa loob ng NBSPI Auditorium. Pinangunahan ito nina Bb. Sunshine Maligao,S.E. coordinator, Bb. Marielle Cabillo, NBSPI Guidance Counselor at Mr. Marvin Cimagala, S.E. President. Inimbitahan ang former Student-Employee President na si Mr. Delfin Wagas na ngayo’y isa na sa mga nagtuturo sa NBSPI at kasalukuyan ding empleyado ng KCC Mall of Gensan bilang panauhing tagapagsalita upang maibahagi ang kanyang mga pinagdaanan noong siya ay isang student employee pa lamang. Layunin ng ginawang seminar na hikayatin ang mga studentemployees na magkaroon ng malusog na pag-iisip at matatag na paninindigan sa bawat pagharap sa anumang sitwasyon.

As the need to address the importance of mental health rises, the New Brighton School of the Philippines, Inc. Peer Facilitator’s Club arranged a Mental Health Week Seminar held last Friday, November 17, 2023 at the school’s covered court with the theme: “𝙉𝙪𝙧𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙍𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚: 𝙋𝙧𝙞𝙤𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙯𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙔𝙤𝙪𝙩𝙝 𝙈𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙖𝙡 𝙃𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙩𝙝 𝙞𝙣 𝙏𝙤𝙙𝙖𝙮’𝙨 𝙒𝙤𝙧𝙡𝙙”. The Guest speaker, Mr. John Zamir O. Lim, RPm, ICAP 1, invited everyone to a meaningful discussion of bettering resilience, ending stigmas, and crossing out the misconceptions toward different mental health issues, particularly the distinction between anxiety and depression. Our guest speaker opened students’ minds to some helpful measures they may use to improve their well-being as well, introducing the five-component model PERMA: Positive Emotion, Engagement, Relationship, Meaning, and Accomplishment. In addition, attendees’ got to ask their questions and clarify mistakes one may encounter in the process of reaching out, from a professional’s perspective.

FASTENED SEATBELTS ONTO ONE MEMORABLE ADVENTURE!
Sa unang araw ng Setyembre taong 2023 ay iginanap ang pagdiriwang ng Buwan ng Wika sa New Brighton School of the Philippines Inc., nagkaroon ng iba’t ibang aktibidad ang paaralan katulad ng Larong Pinoy, tagisan ng talino, at masining na pagmugna.
December 02, 2023 — The New Brighton School of the Philippines Inc. together with the PSITS Club and MATH-SCI Club commenced the yearly anticipated National Science and Technology Week 2023 with a theme, “𝙎𝙞𝙮𝙚𝙣𝙨𝙮𝙖, 𝙏𝙚𝙠𝙣𝙤𝙡𝙤𝙝𝙞𝙮𝙖, 𝙖𝙩 𝙄𝙣𝙤𝙗𝙖𝙨𝙮𝙤𝙣: 𝙆𝙖𝙗𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙠𝙖𝙩 𝙨𝙖 𝙈𝙖𝙩𝙖𝙩𝙖𝙜, 𝙈𝙖𝙜𝙞𝙣𝙝𝙖𝙬𝙖, 𝙖𝙩 𝙋𝙖𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙖𝙜 𝙣𝙖 𝙆𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙗𝙪𝙠𝙖𝙨𝙖𝙣”.
In celebration of this year’s 𝙉𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙏𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙞𝙨𝙢 𝙒𝙚𝙚𝙠, New Brighton students from the Hospitality Management department embarked on a journey to celebrate the annual event with the theme 𝙏𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙞𝙨𝙢 & 𝙂𝙧𝙚𝙚𝙣 𝙄𝙣𝙫𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙨, to promote and exhibit the different tourist attractions in the Philippines, as well as our rich cultural heritage.
The program was graced by the opening prayer led by PSITS VP Shannie Trasporte, and followed by the singing of National Anthem.
Along with other participating schools, NBSPI proudly hosted the event last September 25, 2023, at Veranza Mall Atrium, with creative booths on display with crafts we can call our very own, showcasing different talents from the school’s HM Program. NBSPI CELEBRATES IT’S FOURTH ANNUAL ARAW NG TANGLAW
A GLIMPSE OF A BRIGHTONIAN FUTURE!
December 15, 2023 — New Brighton School of the Philippines Inc. held its fourth annual tradition of making a profound impact to the community through the Araw ng Tanglaw outreach program with the theme, "𝙃𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙤𝙜 𝙎𝙖𝙮𝙖 𝙨𝙖 𝙆𝙖𝙗𝙧𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩𝙖𝙖𝙣𝙜 𝘽𝙧𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩𝙤𝙣" on Friday, at the NBSPI campus grounds and facilities.
New Brighton School of the Philippines inc. (NBSPI) students showcase their artistic and commendable skills in alignment to offer a cozy and warm welcome to our future Brightonians.
The Supreme Student Council President, Rey De Guzman, welcomed all the invited institutions and organizations and thanked them for completing the event in their presence.

As the day finally arrived, October 21, 2023, NBSPI Opened its doors from 8 AM – 11 AM to officially make the home known and accessible to other visitors. Creative booths are prepared by the clubs of NBSPI with different designs, a program was also prepared, and students was toured around the school.

The program then proceeded with the mostawaited raffle draw activity, which was one of the focal points of the program, wherein five people won 100 pesos each, 10 individuals won a water tumbler, 15 Noche Buena packages were distributed, and 1 grand winner won one sack of rice and a Noche Buena package as the grand prize.
