Dear Prospective Home Buyers, The stories my parents shared about growing up in the Philippines with bamboo homes and dirt floors seemed more like fabricated stories than any true-to-life experiences. Amidst these stories lived multiple themes that seemed to develop as my maturity grew. As a child, the narratives promoted obedience. As a teen, they developed gratitude. As and an adult, I recognized that a home provides refuge. These precepts shaped the care of this home. Now, as a father and husband, I sought to make my own home a haven of safety, love, and a sanctuary to cultivate and create memories.

Even though my wife designed the home to be minimalistic, countless locations still existed to conceal myself during our winter pre-bedtime hide-and-seek challenges. In the spring and summer, the adjacent parking lot was converted into a source of steal-the-flag and chalk wars. The open stair slats, originally thought to be old-fashioned, turned into a source for pull-up contests. Lying on the soft bedroom carpet after a long day of my son’s chemotherapy treatment rejuvenated our bodies physically and emotionally. The basement housed eight pieces of indoor play gym equipment and enough space to cut short the seemingly endless energy of four children, ages seven-to-one. Walks around the neighborhood included multiple pokéstops for Pokémon masters-in-training.

If the Army wasn’t sending us across the nation, we would love to stay in this special home.

Despite the long days and nights away from my family during medical school and residency, the multi-level home provided my wife and children numerous areas to have puppet shows, dance parties, and art classes. Even the recently created backyard patio and fence enclosure offered a place to hold water wars custom fitted with a slip-and-slide. The supportive community acted as a lifeline during my frequent absence. Whether we needed a garden hose or a bag of flour, we could depend on our neighbors, just as they could on us, to pull our family out of a pinch. With a sub-18-minute commute to the hospital at Fort Belvoir or Fairfax, I maximized the precious little time with my family before calmly driving to work. In 12 minutes, my wife could have four kids with snacks already running around at Fairlington playground, strolling around Old Town Alexandria, or gazing at DC from the top of the National Harbor Ferris wheel.

While the years may pass, we will always see this brick townhome in Alexandria as a source of fond memories and an unforgettable reminder that this home was a shelter against the storms of life.
