FROM THE OWNER Dear Prospective Home Buyer, With mixed emotions my wife Jesse and I have placed our 4210 13th Street NE, Washington DC 20017 on the market as it transfers into its next phase in the beautiful and dynamic greater Brookland neighborhood. We wanted to share a bit about the home that we’ve loved to help the stories live on as we end our 14-year ownership of the property. In 2005 I was delighted to purchase the home from very nice couple who were both professors at CUA and Howard University. Retirement was prompting them to make their next move, and I was the lucky person to buy the home during a very fast real estate market! I entered the property to find a sturdy home that provided a wonderful life for many families throughout its history. Often when I planted in the garden in the backyard or near the porch I would find little items to remember the families before me. Old fashioned Monopoly pieces and an old wellworn pocket knife are a few that I remember. I lived at 4210 for four years and rented to roommates in graduate school, and eventually a transfer prompted me to leave Brookland and I held the house as a rental property. Students, hospital staff, political staffers, and most recently uber drivers were just some of the folks that enjoyed the property over the years. Regarding Brookland history, beginning in 2005 I attended many neighborhood meetings to support the “Brookland Small Area Plan”, which has now become the beautiful set of mixed-use retail and residential spaces in the Monroe Street Market area. The renovation of Turkey Thicket Playground was also an effort where I joined my neighbors to press for the modernization of open spaces and recreational services for Brookland. I have been thrilled to see not only see both projects deliver - but also to clearly see the economic spillover (well-predicted by the designers) that continues to push 12th street businesses and properties in a positive direction. Preparing for sale the house for sale meant losing a few of the nuances that gave the home some of its historical context, but when you’re inside you’ll certainly feel (and hear) how the strong brick walls (even between the properties) echo construction quality from a time gone by. It’s a great home, and we wish you the best as you take 4210 13th Street into its next phase!
