BULLETIN #40

‘Glow and Grow’ at Portland High and Preparatory School

The Portland High and Preparatory School hosted its fundraising Banquet on April 7, 2024. The banquet was aimed at raising funds for the renovation and equipping of the school’s Science Laboratory.

It was a beautiful Sunday evening when students, parents, and other patrons turned up to an elegantly dressed schoolyard to show their support for this most worthy cause. The program started at approximately 5:30 pm when the Education Director of the North East Jamaica Conference Elder Audrey Brown called the gathering to order and segued into the opening prayer.

The fundraising banquet dubbed ‘Grow and Glow’, was conceptualized as an event to emphasize the teaching and learning mandate of the ed-

ucational institution that would create, in this scenario, an opportunity to expose the students to a formal dining setting and teach social graces and etiquette. The funds that were generated would be used to purchase well-needed equipment and apparatus for the science laboratory such as microscopes, balances, measuring flasks, and reagents just to name a few.

The evening was chaired by Mrs Carla Douglas, Acting Principal Research Director, Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining. A scientist herself, she kept the

audience engaged with fun facts, trivia questions, and her Grow and Glow jingle/poem challenge.

President of the North East Jamaica Conference and Board Chairman of the Portland High and Preparatory School, Pastor Danielo Daniels, brought greetings on behalf of the Conference and the School Board. He emphasized the work that was being done to improve the school so that it would indeed be a beacon in the community and influence the students to ‘grow and glow’.

The Keynote Address was given by Mrs. Sophia Roache, Head of the Science and Agricultural Department at Marymount High School. In her address, she reminded the students that they were special and that they should grow with Jesus. “Jesus should always be with you and always choose to do your best,” she said. Mrs. Roache admonished the students to, “Get good grades. As you grow, have inquisitive minds. Scientists have inquisitive minds. They explore who, why, when, where, what, and how.” In closing, she stressed to the students that they must grow with God.

companied lead vocalist Gavicia Edwards, a past student of Portland High along with her daughter Tish-khani Thompson. They serenaded the crowd with tunes such as ‘From a Distance’, ‘There’s a Place for people like you’, ‘Putting up Resistance’, ‘Redemption Song’, ‘No woman nuh cry’, and ‘Who the cap fits’. Mrs. Delicia Brown, Mrs. Sydonique Johnson, Mrs. Glenise Chung, and Mrs. Lorna Peynado completed the entertainment package with songs, poems, and an Anancy Story. The patrons enjoyed the line-up, singing and swaying to the music.

The meal was served buffet style. The palates of the patrons were satisfied with a delectable array of local cuisine as they dined under the stars. A group of six Preparatory school students rose to the jingle/poem challenge and got prizes for their poem ‘Grow and Glow’.

Parents and other attendees were highly impressed by the banquet. Elder Brown remarked, “They came and said they were happy that we actually went through with it and that the children enjoyed themselves and it is something good for the children. It has a lot of scope in it and we should try it again.”

Marie Alladice mother of Jaidakai Bell a student at the preparatory school commented that “Science is important and so the event is for a worthy cause and it is one worth supporting.” Both mother and daughter were present and enjoyed themselves.

Elder Barrington Hall from the Manchioneal Church said “I think it was a very good start, but I hope more persons from the churches will attend next time.”

Music and entertainment were provided by the Algorithms band led by Major Lammie which ac-

TITHING PRINCIPLES

12. In the tithing system the individual determines what is income.

Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver. 2 Corinthians 9:7.

“God, the Creator of man, by instituting the plan of systematic benevolence, has made the work bear equally upon all according to their several abilities. Everyone is to be his own assessor and is left to give all he purposes in his heart.”

Testimonies for the Church 4:469.

“In determining the proportion to be given to the cause of God, be sure to exceed, rather than fall short, of the requirements of duty.” Ibid.

I am more anxious to see a wide circulation for this book than for any others … for in The Great Controversy, the last message of warning to the world is given more distinctly than in any of my other books.
