SPOTLIGHT:
VERDE & HONDO Nothing can replace the loss of someone you love. But if we’re fortunate, new love finds its way into the broken places, restoring light to what once felt dark. Verde was a terrified burro rescued from a kill pen in Texas with her baby, Apache. Both were rushed to an equine hospital for treatment; pneumonia often runs rampant in kill pens. With around-the-clock care, Verde slowly improved, but Apache did not survive. We had him cremated so he could come home with Verde to Healing River Ranch in Arizona, where she arrived shut down, grieving her freedom and her baby. Hondo was another victim of the slaughter pipeline. He had already lost his mother; young burros are often separated because there’s a market for babies, while frightened adults are sent to slaughter. When Hondo fell ill during transport, he was left at a veterinary clinic in Flagstaff. We took him in, hoping he and Verde might comfort each other. What happened next surprised us all: Verde became Hondo’s mother, and Hondo found the one he needed most.

Apache can never be replaced. But a grieving mother found someone who needed her love — and that is the miracle of sanctuary.

TYLLER
GUMMERSALL BAND
Tyller Gummersall has built a career on traditional country with room to roam — Western swing, honky-tonk, singer-songwriter storytelling with a little roots-rock grit, all served up with a rotating cast of top-tier musicians. Ahead of his next show, Gummersall spoke with Prescott NOW about his band, his sound and what brought him to Prescott.
Prescott NOW: How long have you been playing together as a band? Gummersall: I met my main rhythm section, Jim Kelley on bass and George Lilly on drums, in 2021 when I first moved to Arizona. Mike Smith (pedal steel) has been playing with us off and on since 2023. [He was a real treat to have along at our June Elks Theatre Show]; he has three gold and two platinum albums for his work with The Gatlin Brothers and has also toured the world with The Judds, Charlie Rich, Hank Williams, Jr., Jerry Reed and others. I’ve had the pleasure of performing with so many talented folks. Prescott in particular has a wonderful music scene, and I’m so lucky to have a solid list of players I can call on! Rick Schmidt (pedal steel/guitar) has been part of the core since 2023. Terry Kirkendall on drums has been trading chairs with George the past few years; they’re both incredible drummers.
Prescott NOW: What’s the story behind the band’s name? Gummersall: Honestly, we probably should come up with one eventually! For now it’s just the Tyller Gummersall Band. The musicians I play with all have their own projects and careers too, so it’s always felt more like a rotating family of great players than a traditional fixed band.
Prescott NOW: How do you connect with the audience during a show?
Gummersall: I always try to read the room first. Every crowd is a little different, some folks want to dance all night, some want to really listen to the lyrics and stories. My goal is to meet people where they are and bring them into the show. Some of my favorite performers were songwriters in Nashville and Texas who could hold a room completely captive with a story or even just a simple moment between songs. The best shows feel less like a performance and more like everybody sharing the same experience. e. Prescott NOW: How would you describe your sound? Gummersall: The short answer is traditional country, but there are a lot of influences mixed in there. With the full band, we can move from western swing and honky-tonk to singer-songwriter material and even some bluesier roots-rock sounds. I like a show to have dynamics and variety. No matter what, the goal is always to serve the song and let the musicianship shine through.
Prescott NOW: What is the most memorable moment of your career so far?
Gummersall: One that really stayed with me happened while I was playing dancehalls down in Texas. After the show, the bass player handed me a note left in the tip jar. It said: “Thank you. This is the first time my husband and I have danced since his open-heart surgery. I was afraid we’d never dance again.” Music can sometimes feel like a grind when you’re out there trying to make a living, but moments like that remind you how meaningful it can be for people.
Prescott NOW: What advice would you give to your younger self? Gummersall: Enjoy the ride a little more, and trust that things have a way of working out if you keep showing up and doing the work.
Prescott NOW: What brought you to Prescott? Gummersall: Less snow and more music! My parents, who are both artists, moved to Prescott first, and my dad kept telling me about how vibrant the music scene was here. I’d been looking for a western town where I could still make a living playing music. The support for live music here is special! The venues, musicians, restaurant owners and audiences all play a role in keeping it alive. Vol. 14, No. 9 Prescott NOW 33

PRESCOTT NOW Rewind
How Prescott Celebrated America's 250th Birthday story and photos submitted by Katrina Trahan The City of Prescott held its Fourth of July celebration at Pioneer Park. The City used all four park fields, meaning families were never short of things to do — bouncy houses, water slides, a train, all types of games and a bull riding machine. Even the parents could get in on the fun. The first activity was pretty handson for the City staff. Three of those running the event loaded and fired T-shirts at the audience. Though the T-shirt cannon was great for long distance shooting, they threw the shirts in the general audience. Then came the hot dog eating contest. There were eight contestants. Some seasoned vets, some younger competitors and a few last-minute entries. No one shied away from this contest, not even the audience. The competition was rough and rowdy, with hot dog crumbs and water flying everywhere. Joshua Wilkerson may have been the winner, but the young
40 Prescott NOW Vol. 14, No. 9
contestant, Jonathan Kroff, stole the show. Mary Sannapu recited the Declaration of Independence after the contest. Her following speech described the grit and sacrifices that went into making our Founding Fathers’ dream a reality. After some more live music and dancing, the JROTC announced the winners of a raffle. Many prizes were given out, but Kate Ames was the most excited about her new camping package. The band, Ponderosa Grove, always found ways to keep the audience entertained. They interacted with the younger audience members giving them high-fives for their enthusiastic dance moves. Everyone joined in as the sun went down. Then there were fireworks. They started at 9 p.m. and lasted about 20 minutes. Everyone cheered at the fire in the sky. It was never dark for more than 10 seconds.

Robert Lincoln Visits Prescott
by Drew Desmond, Historian, Prescott Western Heritage Foundation, Western Heritage Center It was March 1894 when Robert Todd Lincoln, son of President Abraham Lincoln, visited Prescott. Accompanying him were three millionaires from Chicago: Marshall Field, the multimillionaire department store mogul; NK Fairbanks, the millionaire meat-packer; and Norman Ream, a manufacturer of agricultural implements. Capital was desperately needed in Yavapai County to develop both mines and railroads. It was the first of three Lincoln Prescott visits. The group came to view the area and inspect work on the Santa FePrescott railway, in which they had already invested $2 million for its construction. They were taken out by a special train to the end of the new track, just short of Skull Valley. The party then boarded carriages and was taken for a tour of the town. They were “profuse in their praise”

of the “invigorating effect” of the “clear, pure, bracing atmosphere,” the Journal-Miner recounted. The visit resulted in Fairbanks and EB Cage joining local railroad mogul Frank Murphy in the purchase of the Congress mine, which, two years later, uncovered ore valued at $3 million. Lincoln, Fields and Fairbanks returned in 1897 for a trip of business and pleasure. They stopped in Prescott for only a short time while on their way to inspect the Congress mine. Several other VIPs, including Frank Murphy, joined the trio. In September 1897, more fruit from the first two visits ripened as the Prescott and Eastern Railroad was born. It would run ore from Big Bug into Prescott. NK Fairbanks and other Chicago capitalists joined Frank Murphy as incorporators. During this time, Lincoln was a corporate lawyer for the Pullman
Palace Car Company. He was named company president after founder George Pullman died. By 1901, the Chicago Commercial Club was formed, and Lincoln brought 25 members and 10 guests to Prescott in March, just eight months after the Great Fire. Mayor Burmister led them on a tour, and they “expressed the greatest surprise at the recuperative powers shown and could scarcely believe that such results could be accomplished in the (short) time since the big conflagration,” the Journal-Miner reported. From Prescott, they traveled to the Congress mine. That would be Lincoln’s last visit. He brought the heavy capital needed to grow Yavapai County’s infrastructure and economy. Drew can be reached through the Western Heritage Center at 928.910.2307.

5 Inexpensive Ways to Upgrade
a Home's Curb Appeal submitted by the Prescott Area Association of REALTORS® Whether getting ready to put a home on the market or just looking for ways to better protect a home’s value, curb appeal remains one of the easiest ways to make a property feel more inviting and potentially more valuable. Thumbtack’s newly released 2026 Curb Appeal Report found homeowners increasingly are focused on small outdoor upgrades. But this year’s trend is about more than simply keeping up appearances. “It’s more about: How do I inject some self-expression into the front of my property?” says Kendra Sinclair, home trends expert at Thumbtack. The report, based on a survey of 1,000 homeowners, found most owners are spending $100 to $500 on outdoor upgrades. Here are five budgetfriendly suggestions. 1. Repaint the front door A fresh coat of paint can instantly update a home’s appearance and
56 Prescott NOW Vol. 14, No. 9
create a polished first impression. Design experts say homeowners are moving away from cool grays and embracing warmer tones, earthy neutrals and bold greens.
Simple additions like solar-powered pathway lights, updated porch fixtures or subtle landscape lighting can make a home feel more inviting in the evening hours.
For many homeowners, the front door is one of the easiest DIY projects and often costs less than $100 to repaint.
4. Add small pops of color More than 40% of homeowners say they’re adding color accents to their outdoor spaces. From painted shutters to colorful planters and statement front doors, homeowners are moving away from playing it safe and adding more personality to their exterior.
2. Refresh landscaping Nearly two-thirds of homeowners are updating plants, flowers or greenery. Fresh landscaping can send the message: This property is well-cared for. Sinclair says ornamental grasses are increasingly popular because they offer year-round visual interest while requiring relatively low maintenance. 3. Upgrade outdoor lighting Outdoor lighting can be one of the most overlooked curb appeal improvements but can dramatically improve both appearance and functionality.
5. Create a backyard sanctuary Homeowners increasingly want outdoor spaces designed for relaxation, spending time with family and gardening. Patios, seating areas, privacy fences and backyard retreats are becoming bigger priorities. Even simple additions like a porch chair, small bench, cozy seating area or string lights can help transform underused outdoor spaces into areas people want to spend time in.
