ANIMAL GUARDIAN NETWORK PROVIDES LIFE-SAVING CARE TO NEGLECTED ANIMALS. 501(C)(3) NONPROFIT ANIMAL SANCTUARY
This is a delicate subject, but it must be said. One of the greatest responsibilities we have to the animals who trust us is knowing when to let them go. Love makes us want to hold on, but we cannot let our need for more time become their suffering. When their quality of life fades, we must find the strength to make the decision they cannot make for themselves. It is kinder to let them leave while they can still feel our touch and hear our voice, than to wait until suffering has depleted them completely. Hoping they will pass on their own while they suffer is unfair to them, sparing us the heartbreak but not sparing their pain. They depend on us to put their comfort before our fear of saying goodbye. Helping your best friend peacefully over the bridge isn’t giving up. It’s taking their pain and making it ours, one final act of love. Kind, compassionate people can help you, in your home, when that time comes. A kind passing wraps your heart in comfort; an unkind one you carry heavily.

Solstice Flute Camp Heals Souls by Tim Loftus
The glow of the campfire slowly replaced the crimson horizon of the setting sun. In the shadows of nearby pines, someone played the Native American flute, a musical offering, the earthy tones commingling with the embers rising into the sky. Rona Yellow Robe of the Chippewa Cree Tribe opened the traditional Calling in the Directions Ceremony: “We gather this evening in the Spirit of breath, music, learning and love.” Thirty-two students from around the United States attended the 13th annual Solstice Flute Camp, Aug. 16 to Aug. 22 at Chapel Rock Camp and Conference Center in Prescott. This year’s theme was Heal Your Soul. From beginners with no musical experience to advanced players, students learned the intricacies of playing and performing on the Native

American flute. Their teachers, backed with such titles and accolades as Native American Music Award Artist of the Year, Grammy member, Native American Flutist of the Year, Global Music Award, Independent Music Award, InterContinental Music Award, included Rona Yellow Robe, Shelly Morningsong, Fabian Fontenelle, Kalani Das, Joe L Young, Suzanne Teng and Gilbert Levy. “This week was amazing,” said Kelly Kennedy, Executive Director of Solstice, “not just for each student but for all those who helped put Solstice together — the teachers, board members, vendors and volunteer staff. I could see the friendships and camaraderie build each day.” Each morning, students and teachers gathered for a short jam session and to get updates about that day’s classes and workshops. For students who did not
have their own flutes, vendors offered to lend theirs. Classes for beginners, intermediate and advanced students followed later in the morning. Afternoons were for general group sessions as well as workshops on crafting flute bags, making a ceramic bass ocarina, recording and healing sessions through the Native American flute. Activities continued into the evenings including the opening ceremony, an interactive Soul Circle and the Student Concert. On Friday night, Solstice hosted an open-to-thepublic, high-energy concert featuring the Solstice teachers at The Federal in downtown Prescott. The next Solstice Flute Camp will be Aug. 15 to Aug. 21, 2027, at Chapel Rock Camp and Conference Center, Prescott. For more information, visit www.solsticeflute.org.

GYPSY
SOUL
After decades on the road, married musicians and bandmates Gypsy Soul have finally put down roots in Prescott. Ahead of their 30th anniversary as a band next year, they spoke with Prescott NOW about how they got their name, the moment they knew music was more than a dream and the small-town kindness that brought them here.
Prescott NOW: How long have you been playing together as a band? Gypsy Soull: We are celebrating 30 years as Gypsy Soul next year and also 36 years of marriage.
Prescott NOW: What’s the story behind the band’s name? Gypsy Soul: After going through a bunch of truly dreadful names when we started, we were listening to Into The Mystic, by Van Morrison and heard the line, “And I want to rock your gypsy soul” and thought, that’s it! Our musical influences are very diverse and between us, we’ve lived in five different countries so Gypsy Soul definitely describes both of our spirits and love of travel.
Prescott NOW: How do you connect with the audience during a show? Gypsy Soul: A big part of our shows are the stories about the songs, why we wrote them, where we were in our lives when we wrote them and our touring experiences. That kind of dialogue helps to create a very intimate atmosphere where people feel connected because it often reflects their own life stories.
Prescott NOW: How would you describe your sound? Gypsy Soul: Eclectic. We have very diverse tastes in music and that definitely comes across in our music. We started our own record company in 1998 because we both didn’t want to be restricted by anyone telling us we could only be one thing. There are folk rock, jazz, blues, classical and even Celtic influences in our song writing. Whatever serves the song, but there is always a theme and sound that is very particular to us.
Photos courtesy of ©Gypsy Soul Music
Prescott NOW: What is the most memorable moment of your career so far? Gypsy Soul: Turning on the radio and hearing your song for the first time when you weren’t expecting it! Opening for the Doobie Brothers. Our first placements on a motion picture film and national TV show. Oh and then there was the time that we thought we were playing at a naturalist center but it turned out to be a naturist center. Now, that was quite revealing…
Prescott NOW: What advice would you give to your younger self?
to be the best musical versions of ourselves. We have been incredibly fortunate to have made a living being independent musicians for all of our adult lives and have built an extremely loyal fanbase. So much so that we are planning a Holland America Alaska Cruise for our fans in late August 2027 to thank them for their support. Some of them have been with us for 30 years!
Prescott NOW: What brought you to Prescott?
Prescott NOW: What motivates you to perform?
Gypsy Soul: Touring. This was part of our Arizona touring route and we’d come every 12 to 16 months for the past 15 or so years. When we decided to move from S. Oregon after decades of fires, we were looking for sweet mountain town where the people were kind.
Gypsy Soul: The love of performing. We both knew at very early ages that we wanted to be musicians. But it was never about wanting to be famous but more about wanting
We wanted to live in a small community where people look after each other and we could continue living the dream of making our living and life from our art.
Gypsy Soul: Invest in Apple, Netflix and Amazon.

Hundreds of “horse operas” galloped across the huge county. However, its star status faded with the end of the Western era in the late 1960s. But then its star was reborn. Director Sam Peckinpah and Steve McQueen — highest paid actor in the world at that time — bestowed “come back” status in 1972 with Junior Bonner. The thrill-packed feature was lensed entirely in Prescott before, during and after rodeo week. Nevertheless, Prescott owes its enduring status to Tom Mix — also the highest paid actor in the world in his time — who appeared in 291 Westerns from 1909 to 1935, 63 shot in and around Prescott. He had been a cowboy, performing his own stunts and wearing his signature ten-gallon hat. Mix often lived in Prescott between films and participated in local events. He

rode his “wonder horse” Tony onto the stage of the Elks Opera House for a film premiere. While the Granite Dells drew Western filmmakers to Prescott, the red rocks of Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon seduced others. About 100 Western films were shot there. But Prescott “upstaged” Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon with more contemporary filmmaking, drawn by its small-town ambience. Among the first, in 1969, was Billy Jack, a martial arts drama released in 1971. Most recently, Prescott hosted an acclaimed feature drama about a hometown hero. “Wish Man” (2019) is the true story of Arizona DPS motorcycle officer Frank Shankwitz, who created and founded the MakeA-Wish Foundation after meeting an inspiring terminally ill boy. Shankwitz resided in Prescott, and served on the Prescott Western Heritage Foundation Board of Directors until his passing in 2021. The entire film was shot in Yavapai County, and primarily in
Prescott. A bronze bust memorializing Shankwitz will be installed on the Prescott Courthouse Plaza by the end of this year. The town touts the Prescott Film Office and the Prescott Area Filmmakers Alliance to court Hollywood. The newest exhibit at the Western Heritage Center is The Heritage Theatre. A circa 1920s façade features a working marquee, ticket booth with periodcostumed ticket taker, multiple Tom Mix posters, two replica Oscars, and a view inside the theater with an audience watching Tom Mix in his 1923 epic Sky High. It was the first film shot in the Grand Canyon and used a biplane for some scenes. Flanking the theater are three large, illuminated panels that rotate computer generated theater lobby posters donated to the WHC by movie aficionado and collector Tom Slaback. The Western Heritage Center is at 156c S. Montezuma St. in Prescott.

Spotlight: RED, WHITE & BREW
Happy Hour
RED, WHITE & BREW
Offers Fall Menu story and photos submitted by Red, White & Brew
The Prescott restaurant has introduced a completely revamped happy hour featuring signature cocktails, wine, beer and bar bites for $10 or less. “Our chefs really challenged themselves when creating this year’s fall menu,” says Jimmy Herrera, co-owner of Red, White & Brew. “We like to change things up each season, and this year they had a lot of fun building the menu around sweet potato and finding different ways to use those beloved fall flavors across the menu.” Fall starters include the Golden Pistachio Crusted Brie Bites with Raspberry Honey Glaze, which features crispy pankocrusted Brie bites, lightly warmed and drizzled with a hot honey raspberry glaze, then topped with pistachios and fresh mint and served with crisp lahvosh crackers. There’s also Sweet Potato Fritters with Whipped Ricotta, layered with silky whipped ricotta and finished with hot honey, fresh herbs, cracked black pepper and sea salt. For heartier fall flavors, the Pumpkin and Butternut Squash Raviolis feature pumpkin and butternut squash-filled pasta tossed in a housemade flame-roasted corn cream sauce and garnished with roasted butternut squash and pumpkin seeds. The Lemon Pesto Rigatoni with Burrata and Roasted Pine Nuts pairs rigatoni sautéed in lemon pesto sauce with roasted pine nuts, burrata and fresh basil. The seasonal menu also introduces Fresh Chilean Sea Bass with Sweet Potato Mash, Apple, Pecan & Goat Cheese Salad with Honey-Dijon Vinaigrette and Pumpkin Creme Brulee.
The all-new happy hour, available daily from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. in Prescott, offers everything on the happy hour menu for $10 or less, including $7 pints, $7 well drinks, $8 wines of the moment, $10 signature cocktails and $10 bites that include Asiago Garlic Mushroom Tapas, Loaded Baked Potato Skins, Chicken Chipotle Empanadas and rotating Chef’s Eggrolls. “Prescott has always been a community-driven restaurant for us, and we wanted our happy hour to reflect that,” Herrera says. “Whether it’s a drink after work, meeting friends or just finding a good deal, we wanted to make sure there was something for everyone at a price point that’s easy to enjoy.” Beyond happy hour, the Prescott beverage menu also is getting a refresh with new cocktails, beer and wine selections. New signature cocktails include the Old Mother Tucker, made with Bib & Tucker bourbon, brown sugar simple syrup and Turkish tobacco bitters, and the Tropical Outlaw, featuring American Beach Whiskey, coconut, pineapple juice and blue curacao. The menu also introduces a new lineup of alcohol-free Refreshers, including the Route 66 Root Beer, made with craft root beer, vanilla cream and cold foam, and the Watson Lake Cooler, featuring coconut, grenadine, vanilla creamer, lemon-lime soda and cold foam. A rotating Seasonal Refresher rounds out the new alcohol-free offerings. The Prescott Red, White and Brew is at 200 E. Gurley St. For more information visit www.rwbaz.com. LOCAL MARKET OPPORTUNITIES
9 Home Features
Buyers Appreciate Most submitted by the Prescott Area Association of REALTORS® Practically every buyer has a wish list before they purchase a home. Open floorplans, beautiful kitchens and great neighborhoods usually are at the top. But once they’ve settled in, many homeowners often discover the features they appreciate most aren’t always the ones they expected. Experts at Tri Pointe Homes Las Vegas and Tri Pointe Homes Arizona have noticed these nine trends. 1. Prep Zone A prep zone keeps cooking, cleanup and small appliances tucked away while the main kitchen remains open for gathering, making entertaining easier and everyday life less cluttered. 2. Multigenerational Living Plans Multigenerational living floorplans that incorporate what Tri Pointe calls “GenSmart Suites” provide private living areas that can comfortably serve multiple generations and needs. These flexible spaces are adaptable, also being used as a home office.
64 Prescott NOW Vol. 14, No. 10
3. Game Rooms Game rooms positioned between secondary bedrooms provide space beyond the main living areas. Whether for homework, gaming, crafts, movie nights or spending time together in a more personal space, these adaptable spaces offer versatility. 4. Accessory Garages Oversized garages aren’t just useful for RV owners. Many homeowners find themselves using the additional space for workshops, home gyms, golf carts, outdoor gear, seasonal storage or hobby spaces. 5. Whole-Home Wellness Energy-efficient construction, healthier indoor air, abundant natural light, thoughtful room flow and water-saving technologies can improve everyday comfort. Tri Pointe’s LivingSmart and LivingWell options offer whole-home wellness features that demonstrate how a home’s performance and overall livability can work together to support healthier, more comfortable daily living.
6. Covered Outdoor Living Morning coffee, dinner with loved ones, watching the game or simply relaxing outside can become part of everyday routines. 7. Corner Multipanel Sliding Glass Doors Large sliding glass walls can create a strong first impression during a showing, but many homeowners also learn how they can support indoor-outdoor living. Entertaining becomes easier, natural light increases and decks begin functioning as additional living rooms. 8. Terraced Neighborhood Design Terraced home sites can open certain sightlines, create greater privacy between neighbors and establish more visually appealing streetscapes, which can continue adding value long after moving in. 9. Extended Kitchen Island The extra space can help the kitchen function with greater ease throughout the day, from unpacking groceries and serving meals to creating extra room for work, hobbies or conversation. The opening ceremony kicks off at 5 p.m. on Gurley Street. On Acker Night, guests stroll beneath holiday lights while savoring live performances from more than 500 musicians. Over 100 Prescott businesses open their doors to these volunteer artists, all united by a heartfelt mission: keeping music alive for local schoolchildren. While admission is free, every tip to the

WHISKEY ROW MARATHON
Photos courtesy of Whiskey Row Marathon
Annual Whiskey Row Marathon Challenging as Ever The 48th annual Whiskey Row Marathon will be upon us Oct. 10, with the fittest in Greater Prescott and around the state and nation pushing their limits further and further. The course isn’t getting any easier, naturally. It’s long been touted as one of the most difficult of its kind in the nation, using its high altitude, tricky terrain and occasional bad weather as a selling point to the more extreme end of the running community, trying to prove they’re “Tough Enough” to survive and conquer — it’s right there in the logo The event usually draws more than 900 runners and around 3,000 spectators. The full marathon snakes up the sides of Wolverton Mountain and Williams Peak, hitting a peak elevation of 7,000 feet twice in the out-and-back course. The WRM umbrella also covers half-marathon, 10K and 5K races and a .3 mile Fun Run; all races begin and end at the Courthouse Plaza. Spectators are
76 Prescott NOW Vol. 14, No. 10
welcome, with most of the races using parts of Montezuma Street, Copper Basin Road, Thumb Butte Road and/or Hassayampa Village Lane, among other roads. A sports and business expo accompanying the marathon will be held Oct. 9 at the YMCA campus, 750 Whipple St., and Oct. 10 on Cortez Street at the east side of Courthouse Plaza. Both will feature product sampling, demonstration, health and safety booths, race tips and official Whiskey Row Marathon merchandise for sale. The proceeds are channeled into funds at the James Family Prescott YMCA to provide financial assistance for needy families who want to send their children to swimming lessons, gymnastics classes, daycare or youth sports. In recent years the Prescott Y has spent more than $200,000 annually to support these kids and teens. A horde of volunteers keeps the runners on track. Dignity Health Yavapai
Regional Medical Center is this year’s presenting sponsor and Galpin Ford is the premier sponsor. Other sponsors include Brown & Brown, Climate Control, Credit Union West, Damon Olsen & Family, Foothills Bank, Manzanita Landscaping, Matrix Fitness, National Bank, Pinnacle Bank, Skeehan & Young, Sunland Supply Inc. and Yavapai Landscaping. For registration and more information about the event visit whiskeyrowmarathon.com.
