Toshi’s Story

Toshi was discarded, another breeder dump left in the desert.

He initially was trapped and brought to what was believed to be a safe, trusted foster situation. That safety unraveled as he was handed off without care or accountability.

Less than 24 hours later, he escaped an unsecured yard and began what would become a long, exhausting journey through Prescott Valley. For six days he ran mile after mile through active work zones and across a four-lane highway. He dodged cars, heavy machinery and predators. He scavenged in a landfill and narrowly escaped being crushed by a bulldozer. Every trap set to bring him to safety

failed, he was simply too smart, too driven to survive.

A donor-funded rescue effort was mobilized. A veterinarian was deployed to safely dart and sedate, along with a professional drone operator to track Toshi.

At 6:40 that morning, he was

spotted. Before the drone could even launch, the first dart was delivered. But even as the sedation began to take hold, he pushed forward and disappeared from sight. The team of amazing volunteers regrouped and continued on foot, quiet, focused and unwilling to lose him.

Nearly an hour later, Toshi was spotted. A second dart was delivered. Finally, the sedation took hold.

Toshi was transported for veterinary care and treatment. Then he made the journey to Healing River Ranch.

He will not be available for adoption. This was never about placement. It was about stepping in and making it right.

Safety. Protection. Peace.

Our sanctuary is a forever home for elderly, special-needs, and hospice animals — those often overlooked or forgotten — who were once destined for euthanasia or slaughter. Here, they live out their lives surrounded by safety, dignity, love and enrichment.

THERE ARE MANY MEANINGFUL WAYS TO SUPPORT OUR MISSION: Legacy Giving  Monthly Donation  Volunteer Amazon Wish List  Fry’s Community Rewards Event Sponsorship  Seasonal Giving

We are sustained entirely through grants, donations and fundraising efforts and receive no government funding. Every dollar donated goes directly toward providing life-saving care and lifelong sanctuary for animals in need.

PULSE

For a relatively small community Greater Prescott has an astoundingly vibrant music scene. You can hear live music pouring out of bars, saloons, breweries, clubs, coffeehouses, restaurants, concert halls, parks, galleries and anywhere else a crowd might form. Every month we’re putting a different local act in the spotlight.

LONDON & PING BAND

If you've spent any time in Prescott's live music scene, chances are you've crossed paths with London & Ping — the duo (plus two) known for blending country and classic rock with equal parts heart and humor. We sat down with the band to talk gear, ghosts and why none of them plan on retiring anytime soon.

Layne London

Prescott NOW: How long have you been playing together as a band?

London & Ping Band: The current lineup has been together a little over a year, but Doug and Layne go back more than four years, which explains the synchronized eye rolls.

Prescott NOW: What’s the story behind the band’s name?

London & Ping Band: It’s an ancient musical phrase loosely translated as “two guys who wouldn’t stop buying guitars.”

Prescott NOW: How do you connect with the audience during a show?

London & Ping Band: Between the songs, the stories and the occasional smart remark, we try to make every crowd feel like old friends.

Prescott NOW: How would you describe your sound?

London & Ping Band: An eclectic mix of country and classic rock … with country winning most of the arguments.

Prescott NOW: What was the most memorable moment of your career so far?

London & Ping Band: Between the four of us, there have been a lot of memorable moments over the years, but playing Prescott’s historic Elks Theatre always feels special. You can feel the history in that room, and maybe a few ghosts judging the setlist.

Prescott NOW: What advice would you give your younger self?

Doug: I wouldn’t. He wouldn’t listen anyway.

Layne: Buy Microsoft and Apple … and maybe hang on to them.

George: Cottage cheese isn’t as bad as you think.

Aaron: Most of the things you worry about never actually happen.

Prescott NOW: What motivates your band to perform?

London & Ping Band: Good crowds, good friends, and the fact that none of us know how to retire properly.

Prescott NOW: What brought you to Prescott?

London & Ping Band: A moving van. And the realization that Prescott is a pretty great place to grow older without growing up.

Thank YOU SPONSORS

The success of the Tunnel to Towers fundraising event on June 1 & 2 would not have been possible without the extraordinary generosity of you: THE SPONSORS!

Your support is more than a contribution — it is a powerful investment in the lives of America’s heroes and the families who sacrifice so much for our freedom and safety.

Because of your partnership, this special event will help advance the mission of the Tunnel to Towers Foundation: honoring the legacy of fallen first responders and military service members while supporting catastrophically injured veterans, Gold Star families, and first responder families across our nation.

Your commitment demonstrates the very best of our community — compassion, patriotism,

and a willingness to stand beside those who have dedicated their lives to serving others. From local businesses and organizations to individual supporters, each sponsor plays an essential role in making this event meaningful and impactful.

Together, we created 2 unforgettable days of community, remembrance, and generosity at The Club at Prescott Lakes. Your sponsorship helps ensure that every guest experiences not only a wonderful event, but also the deeper purpose behind it — giving back to those who gave everything.

On behalf of the event organizers, volunteers, and beneficiaries, thank you for your leadership, your kindness, and your unwavering support of the Tunnel to Towers mission.

Journeys in Spirit 2026: A Celebration of Native American Art

‘Tis Art Center & Gallery in Prescott is proud to present Journeys in Spirit 2026: Traditional and Contemporary Native Art exhibition from May 13 through June 23. This annual event showcases the rich cultural heritage and artistic expressions of Native American communities.

In collaboration with the Museum of Indigenous People, this year’s exhibition promises to be a vibrant celebration of both traditional and contemporary art forms.

Diverse Collection of Artworks

The Journeys in Spirit exhibition features an array of artworks that include paintings, basketry, jewelry, photography, beadwork, ceramics and more. The collection highlights the extraordinary talent of Native American artists with diverse tribal affiliations, such as Hopi, Cherokee, Diné, Yaqui, Choctaw, Muskogee Creek, Yavapai and others.

Each artist brings their unique perspective and cultural narrative to their work. Many of the artists continue to live within their tribal

communities, while others reside elsewhere yet remain deeply connected to their cultural roots.

Cultural Significance, Educational Opportunities

Art always has played a vital role in Native cultures; it serves as a means of expression, a vehicle for storytelling and a way to preserve rich traditions. The exhibition allows attendees to gain insight into these meanings through personal interactions with the artists.

Visitors can attend an artist reception during Prescott’s 4th Friday Art Walk on May 22 from 5 to 7 p.m. During this event, guests can engage directly with some of the creators behind the works on display, learning their techniques, personal stories and cultural traditions.

Journeys in Spirit exhibition at ‘Tis Art Center & Gallery is not just an art show, but an immersive experience

that fosters understanding and respect for Native cultures while providing economic opportunities for artists. As visitors explore this captivating collection, they will undoubtedly leave with a deeper appreciation for the rich tapestry of stories and traditions expressed through each work of art.

‘Tis Art Center & Gallery is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit gallery at 105 S. Cortez St. in Prescott. For more information about Journeys in Spirit and to view images from the participating artists, visit www.tisartgallery.com and view the Journeys in Spirit event page.

Findlay Subaru Awards $41,000 Locally through Share the Love

Findlay Subaru Prescott celebrated the impact of Subaru’s annual Share the Love Event that takes place in November and December each year by presenting a total of $41,000 in donations to two local hometown charities during an on-site check presentation at the dealership in April.

Funds raised through customer vehicle purchases and leases during the Share the Love Event were directed to charities selected by customers:

Dogtree Pines Senior Sanctuary received $23,000 to support its

mission of providing lifelong sanctuary and medical care to senior dogs.

U.S. VETS – Prescott received $18,000 to assist local veterans with housing, supportive services and stability.

Representatives from both organizations attended the presentation.

“The Subaru Share the Love Event allows our customers to make a positive difference right here in our community,” says Kara Hartman, Marketing Director from Findlay Subaru Prescott. “We are

incredibly grateful to everyone who chose a hometown charity and helped support these vital local organizations.”

The Subaru Share the Love Event is a nationwide initiative in which Subaru and its retailers donate a portion of each new vehicle sale or lease to charitable partners. Findlay Subaru Prescott selects hometown charities annually to ensure donations remain in the Quad-Cities area and directly benefit local causes.

Findlay Subaru Prescott is proud to serve the Quad-Cities community and support local organizations.

Buying a Home?

Why Local Expertise Matters

submitted by the Prescott Area Association of REALTORS®

Buying a home is one of the most important financial decisions many people will ever make. It is exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming, especially in a market that continues to change.

From pricing and negotiations to inspections and timelines, there are many moving parts. That is why working with a REALTOR® who understands the local market matters. This person brings more than access to listings. REALTORS® are professionals held to a higher standard through a strict code of ethics, ongoing education and a commitment to putting their clients’ interests first. That professional standard helps buyers move forward with confidence, knowing they have an advocate working on their behalf. Local knowledge plays a major role in the buying process.

A REALTOR® familiar with the area understands neighborhood trends,

home values and market conditions that may not be obvious from online listings alone. They can help buyers evaluate what is a good value, identify potential concerns and understand how location impacts long-term livability and resale potential.

The home search itself can be time-consuming and emotional. A REALTOR® helps buyers narrow down options based on budget, lifestyle and future plans. By asking the right questions early and explaining the pros and cons of different properties, REALTORS® help buyers focus on homes that truly fit their needs.

Once a buyer is ready to make an offer, having experienced guidance becomes even more important. REALTORS® assist with crafting competitive offers, navigating counteroffers and explaining contract terms and timelines. Their experience helps

buyers avoid common pitfalls and stay on track during a process that can otherwise feel complicated.

From inspections and appraisals to closing day, these professionals help coordinate the details and keep communication moving forward. When questions or challenges arise, as they often do in real estate transactions, an expert can help explain options and guide next steps.

At its core, buying a home is not just about finding the right property. It is about making informed decisions and feeling confident throughout the process.

Working with a REALTOR® means having a trusted professional by your side — someone who understands the market, protects your interests and is committed to helping you reach your goals.

First Telegraph Pole in Arizona

As 1873 dawned, at the behest of Gen. George Crook, Arizona’s delegate to the U.S. House Robert McCormick requested Congress to construct a telegraph line to connect the military posts of Arizona.

In February, a bill was passed allocating $50,000 (over $2 million today) “to construct a military telegraph from San Diego to Fort Yuma and thence into the interior of Arizona,” the Weekly Arizona Miner reported.

In late May, Western Union signed a contract providing an additional $150,000. Morris Goldwater, Prescott Mayor, volunteered to provide a Phoenix office free of charge and a battery, if need be.

Work started in San Diego, but Gen. Crook and others saw no reason to wait for the live telegraph line to reach Prescott, and it was

decided to start raising a wire at the Fort Whipple end.

Beneath the first pole erected at Fort Whipple, a time capsule was buried that included “a copy of the Arizona Miner, and one of the Arizona Citizen … (as well as) copies of orders issued by Gen. Crook upon the conclusion of his campaign against the Apaches, and a roster of officers serving at this date in the Department of Arizona,” the Miner catalogued.

On Sept. 2, 1873, a large crowd gathered in front of Gen. Crook’s headquarters. At 10 o’clock, Mrs. Crook broke the ground. In a few minutes, the work crew had erected three poles and stretched a wire.

On Nov. 11, “The military telegraph line was completed between Yuma and Prescott. The first military messages over the line announced and congratulated Lt. Gen. Crook

on his new promotion to Brigadier General,” the Miner chronicled.

It was Nov. 18 when the wire from San Diego to Yuma was completed. The first dispatch from San Diego was received at Fort Whipple about 3 p.m., Nov. 19, at which time a gun was fired in honor of the event. Prescott was connected to the world.

The arrival of the telegraph caused another “Prescott first.” On Dec. 1, 1873, the first regular daily newspaper in the territory, the Daily Arizona Miner, was born.

Because concerned citizens donated to the cause of bringing Arizona online (mostly providing the poles), the final cost to the federal government was only $45,000 of the $50,000 Congress appropriated.

As for the time capsule, I was unable to find any account of its recovery. What an amazing find that would be!
