What inspires you? Every one of us can create a kinder path for another. Recently, I was reminded of that truth. I was standing in line at Boot Barn. Ahead of me was an older couple. The husband needed a new pair of pants. When they attempted to pay, their card was declined. They searched for another card, apologizing for the delay. As the woman continued looking through her wallet, I handed the cashier my card and quietly asked her to add their purchase to mine. “Why would you do this?” the older woman asked. “Because I believe I was placed

here, at this moment, for a reason. Today, that reason was to help you.” Later, I learned of a family on the San Carlos Indian Reservation with several children and their dogs. For nearly two years they had been living without running water or electricity.

Tucked into Prescott's lively local music scene is a two-piece act proving that you don't need a full lineup to fill a room with sound. Fall Guys — guitarist and vocalist John Cherene alongside bandmate Tim D'Andrea — have spent the past year and a half delivering high-energy rock hits from the '60s, '70s and '80s, faithfully recreating the records audiences grew up loving, from Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Doors to Pink Floyd and Chicago. With a lean setup, an ever-growing 100-plus song list, and a knack for turning casual listeners into front-of-stage fans, the duo has carved out a niche all their own. We sat down with Tim and John to talk about the band's origins, that memorable name and what keeps them coming back to the stage.

Prescott NOW: How long have you been playing together as a band?

Prescott NOW: How would you describe your sound?

Tim: Around April 2023 I auditioned for Flashback, where I met John and drummer Jeff Weatherford. John and I spun out Fall Guys in January 2024 because we saw significant need in Prescott for more cost-effective bands with a smaller footprint.

John: We try to sound like the original record because people like that.

Prescott NOW: What’s the story behind the band’s name?

We lean toward high energy rock hits from primarily the ‘70s, but with lots of ‘60s and ‘80s too. Examples are Lynyrd Skynyrd, Doors, Elvis and some more unique groups like Pink Floyd, Chicago and Righteous Brothers. We are mixing live guitar, bass and vocals with recorded drum tracks. We try to keep it pure and not overly produced. However, you will hear strings and horns in songs from Pink Floyd, Moody Blues, Chicago, etc.

Tim: When I was in San Diego, I found myself on stage with a blues band that had no name. The emcee asked us the name of the band. Our guitarist was a great player named Mark Fahl. So he chimed in and called us the Fahl (read “Fall”) Guys. We later were renamed, but I always tucked that name away for a rainy day. By the way, we don't fall … much.

Prescott NOW: How do you connect with the audience during a show? Tim: John is an excellent singer and player. People naturally migrate to the stage and engage with us during his amazing solos. During breaks, I like to walk around and meet folks in the audience. What is remarkable is how often they say this is exactly the kind of music they enjoyed growing up, and the music they like to get out and listen to. We are also working on being ready for requests and bringing impromptu singers up from the audience.

Tim: I agree with John because you can see them come up and marvel at John's authentic replication of the guitar solos.

As a two-piece band, we think we are unique in that we have a slightly embellished pure sound that sounds like a full band. Yet we refrain from overproducing and sounding like karaoke.

Prescott NOW: What advice would you give to your younger self? John: Work for the government. Tim: I think that your bandmates’ personalities

and aspirations are equally as important as the talent level. You should always interview bandmates before you audition to make sure you’re on the same page in terms of aspirations and personalities. And, also try to notice any of those nasty bad habits in advance!

Prescott NOW: What motivates your band to perform? Tim: We get great responses from our audience because we play the songs that they love. We get many requests that we actually write down and strive to add to our 100-plus song list. John: I think because the people like the same music that we do, and I love playing that kind of music to people who love it.

Prescott NOW: What brought you to Prescott? John: A friend of mine who I used to play with in L.A. moved up here. I came up to look and just loved it, so I made the move. Tim: Years ago when I lived in San Diego, we had great friends in the Prescott area. We visited often and of course loved Whiskey Row. As the Arizona sun set over Buckin’ Burro Ranch & Events, the atmosphere came alive. Cowboy hats, polished boots, handcrafted jewelry and Western style set the tone for an evening that felt equal parts celebration, community gathering and unforgettable experience. During the June event, guests were greeted with cocktails, lively conversation and an impressive silent auction featuring original artwork, unique experiences, premium collectibles and one-ofa-kind treasures. Everywhere you looked, friends were reconnecting, new friendships were forming and conversations centered around a shared commitment to making a difference for vulnerable animals. The excitement reached its peak

during the live auction, where spirited bidding, laughter, applause and extraordinary generosity filled the room. Each winning bid represented so much more than an auction item. It represented hope, healing and lifelong sanctuary for animals who have nowhere else to go. One of the evening’s greatest highlights was the remarkable gathering of community leaders, local business owners, artists, philanthropists, sponsors, volunteers and passionate animal advocates. Their collective generosity demonstrated what is possible when a community comes together with a shared purpose. Behind the scenes, months of planning by an incredible team of volunteers transformed a vision into a memorable fundraising event. Every detail, from the décor and entertainment to the auctions and guest experience, was designed to create an evening worthy of the mission it supported. The generosity shown will

directly support over 100 animals who call Animal Guardian Network’s Healing River Ranch home. Animal Guardian Network is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit animal sanctuary based in Camp Verde, AZ which serves Yavapai County and beyond. Lifelong refuge and exceptional care is provided for senior, special needs, and hospice animals with nowhere else to go. Every guest at the Saturday Night Shindig became part of that mission, helping write the next chapter in countless lives. It was the beginning of a tradition. DOC HOLLIDAZE WEEKEND

Prescott’s Doc HolliDaze Weekend Set in August story and photos submitted by Prescott Tombstone Connection Join the gathering downtown for Prescott’s Doc HolliDaze weekend, Aug. 14-16. The celebration promotes the history of Prescott for a fun weekend for locals and out of town attendees. A discounted All Weekend Pass includes entrance to all events for $165, and tickets for individual events are available as well at www.PrescottTombstoneConnection.org. Begin the weekend with a Victorian Garden Party at Sharlot Hall Museum Aug. 14, beginning at 5 p.m., followed by a downtown Saloon Crawl. First stroll the 4 acres of gardens and historic buildings of this iconic museum. Then try several local watering holes. Guests receive a wooden nickel for one special Doc Drink. Western or 1880’s period attire is encouraged. On Aug. 15 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., learn history during the Wild West History Forum at the Elks Theatre. Scheduled speakers include Roy Young, Mark Boardman, Peter Brand, Michael Paul Mihaljeich and Anastasia Sitnina. Seating for forum is general admission. Then a lunch break from noon to 1:30 p.m., a catered lunch will be available at the Hassayampa Inn’s Marina Room.

After the forum, there will be a grave marker dedication for JD Kinnear’s grave at the Pioneer’s Home Cemetery at 4 p.m. The dedication is free. The grave marker has been arranged and funded by the Wild West History Association. Doc’s Birthday Party and Whiskey/Cigar Tasting will 6 to 9 p.m. at the Marina Room at the Hassayampa Inn, with a buffet dinner and birthday cake! Enjoy dancing under the stars, and meet Doc Holliday (impersonator Cory Allen from Tombstone). A selection of whiskeys will be provided for sampling, and if you find one you like, full size drinks will be available at the no-host bar. Visit with our History Forum speakers and enjoy a talk by Bradley G. Courtney on Doc’s paramour, “Big Nose” Kate. Learn to play faro and try one of the selection of cigars presented for sale by Ol’ Havana Cigar Bar. 1880’s period or Western attire is encouraged. On Aug. 16 beginning at 1 p.m., Walking History Tours will be provided by local historians. The weekend is a celebration of John Henry “Doc” Holliday’s time in Prescott prior to his fateful move to Tombstone. In 2024, Whiskey Row Historian Bradley G. Courtney and researcher D. Sue Kissell learned

the location of the house where John Henry “Doc” Holliday lived. It was located off Montezuma Street in what is now the parking lot between Bashford Courts and Yavapai Title. A fundraising effort was launched to create a bronze plaque commemorating the location, and the plaque was placed by the City of Prescott in the easement. An unveiling event followed, and the committee elected to continue to celebrate Doc Holliday’s Prescott tenure with an annual event on the weekend closest to his Aug. 14 birthday. A commemorative booklet, Doc Holliday in Prescott, written by Bradley Courtney, will be available at the event, as will books and artwork by the History Forum presenters. The event's host hotels are The Hassayampa Inn and Hotel St. Michael. Ask for their Prescott's Doc HolliDaze rates. Tickets are limited and available online only. Prescott’s newest restaurant Modern Agave opened in mid-June in downtown Prescott at Bashford Courts. This Latin inspired grill is the sister restaurant to the Copper Note. Whether you are looking for a quick tapas and cocktail or a full meal you have choices between their two dining areas. Above the Modern Agave’s main restaurant is the Agave Loft, which features a bar and tapas menu and also will be an event center for larger groups. At Modern Agave, we celebrate the rich flavors and traditions of Latin-inspired cuisine. Our dishes are crafted with fresh ingredients and authentic recipes that pay homage to their Latin heritage. The owners Michele and Steve Sullins wanted to create a unique dining experience not already in the marketplace. The location could not be better on the square off Whiskey Row with shopping all around. Treat yourself or your clients to a fresh new dining experience.

Some of the fan favorites so far are the calamari, ropa vieja, empanadas flat iron steak with chimichurri sauce and the flan. People ask why we opened a Latin restaurant. This project has been something we have wanted to do for a long time and all the stars aligned to make it happen. We always find that when doors keep opening, move through them, and that is what happened here. Michele and Steve both have a long history in the restaurant industry and are enjoying bringing new cuisine to Prescott. Gentlemen, while the ladies are shopping feel free to enjoy a pisco sour, which is a tangy, frothy cocktail from Peru or cold beer in the bar. Buyers Show Signs of Reemerging

submitted by the Prescott Area Association of REALTORS® Contract signings rose nearly 4%, offering up a “late-spring buyer rush” that economists hope will drive a broader recovery in home sales. More buyers entered into contracts for a home in May, the latest sign the housing market could be on the mend after four sluggish years for home sales. The National Association of REALTORS®’ Pending Home Sales Index showed contract signings — a gauge of future home sales — rose 3.8% in May compared to April and were up nearly 5% from a year ago. All four major regions across the U.S. saw an uptick in pending home sales, led by 8% monthly increases in the Northeast and Midwest. The national group also reported that existing-home sales — which reflects closed sales — saw a 3.2% increase, marking one of the best figures for sales data in the past three years.

“A late-spring buyer rush — even with mortgage rates not budging — is an indication of pent-up housing demand and consumers’ acceptance of above-6% mortgage rates as the new normal,” says NAR’s Chief Economist Lawrence Yun.

A limited number of homes for sale remains a key driver of home price growth in many markets. But buyers may be better positioned to absorb those increases. Income and wages have been rising at roughly a 3% to 4% annual pace, helping to offset higher prices.

Buyers could even see a slight reprieve in rates: “Going forward, falling oil prices will help lower mortgage rates,” says Yun, although he added any rate declines likely would be modest.

Yun noted at a press conference that housing inventories would need to rise about 30% to meaningfully ease conditions for homebuyers.

Market Acceptance Homebuyers are readjusting their budgets as they also contend with higher home prices. NAR reported that the median existing-home price for all housing types climbed to $429,300, the highest ever recorded for the month of May. However, that represented a 1.3% annual increase, which actually signaled a cooling in home price growth compared to prior years.

The Midwest led in existing-home sales monthly gains in May, up 6.4%. The trend will likely continue given the region also saw pending home sales rise 8.1% the month before. Heritage Park Zoo Unveils New Bear Enclosure Story and photos submitted by Heritage Park Zoological Sanctuary

On June 7, community members gathered at Heritage Park Zoological Sanctuary for the official ribbon cutting of the zoo’s longawaited new bear enclosure. Hosted in partnership with the Prescott Chamber of Commerce, the event introduced visitors to Koda and Sedona, two young black bears rescued from the Crown King area. Guests had the opportunity to see the new habitat and learn more about the bears’ story as the sanctuary celebrated the completion of a project years in the making. The new enclosure marks an important milestone for the sanctuary, which provides lifelong care for rescued wildlife while educating visitors about Arizona’s native animals and the importance of conservation. The habitat gives Koda and Sedona a permanent home where guests can watch the playful bears grow. Zoo staff and supporters celebrated the community effort behind the project and encouraged residents and visitors to purchase season passes and return often to follow Koda and Sedona’s journey. The ribbon cutting highlighted the continued support that helps Heritage Park Zoological Sanctuary further its mission of wildlife rescue, education and conservation.

Old West Gambling Coming in August by Ray Herbeck, Jr., Historian, Western Heritage Center When Prescott was wild and woolly, gambling was not considered a vice. As a dour Wyatt Earp famously told a judgmental young reporter late in life, “We did not have Y.M.C.A.s.” Wyatt, his brother James, and their former saloon girl “wives” arrived in Prescott in 1880 to convince their brother Virgil, a Prescott constable, to make a family move to the new boomtown of Tombstone. Virgil’s wife opposed the move. To escape heated family “discussions,” Wyatt probably escaped to Whiskey Row to indulge in “bucking the tiger” at faro — his favorite game. Faro was even more popular than poker, its closest rival, and the game of choice of Wyatt’s friend John H. “Doc” Holliday, then a Prescott resident. Holliday had taken down his shingle of “Dentist” and flaunted the sobriquet

of “sporting man,” or professional gambler. The miners’ favorite game was faro; the cowmen’s, poker. Games demanding either skill or intelligence were not popular. In faro, bets were placed atop a green felt layout of the complete suit of spades, glued down and lacquered. Players put coins or chips on the card or cards they thought would be pulled first or second from a box or “case” into which the cards had been placed after shuffling. The box from which the cards were dealt traditionally had a tiger painted on its lid; hence, “bucking the tiger” meant betting against the faro bank. Cards were drawn from a slit in the side of the case in pairs, face up. If the card a man had bet on was drawn first, he lost. If it came up second, he won. And

if neither, he could bet again. Cards already drawn were exhibited by the dealer’s casekeeper, who kept track of the game and gave players a chance to figure out the odds as the game progressed. On Saturday, Aug. 15, from 5 to 8:30 p.m. at the Elks Crystal Hall, locals can immerse themselves in just such a 1880s gaming parlor. The Western Heritage Foundation and the Western Heritage Center invite all to celebrate Doc Holliday’s birthday as would the sporting gentleman himself — gambling. Locals can compete against Lady Luck in eight-period games of chance for raffle tickets and valuable prizes.
