rescott Frontier Days®, Inc is thrilled to announce the much-anticipated 137th annual World’s Oldest Rodeo, taking place from Monday, July 1 to Sunday, July 7 in Prescott, Arizona. This iconic event, held during the bustling Fourth of July week, is a cornerstone of Prescott’s summer calendar, driving economic prosperity throughout the county. Featuring a week-long extravaganza of world-class rodeo action and familyfriendly entertainment, the World’s Oldest Rodeo stands as Prescott’s premier event of the year. Drawing rodeo enthusiasts from across the globe, Prescott Frontier Days invites attendees to immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of western culture and history dating back to its inaugural celebration on July 4, 1888. This year, the rodeo pays tribute to the deeprooted western culture, embodying the theme of

“Prescott Traditions.” As part of the festivities, the rodeo is launching the Memory Catcher campaign, inviting fans nationwide to share their cherished memories and stories of Prescott rodeo traditions. These stories will be featured on the rodeo’s website and social media platforms, celebrating the enduring legacy of Prescott’s premier event. Jim Dewey Brown, General Manager of Prescott Frontier Days, Inc., expressed his gratitude for the generations of rodeo families, stating, “It is an honor to highlight their stories and share the profound impact our rodeo has had on their lives over the years.” The downtown event of the week is the annual rodeo parade, themed “Prescott Traditions,” set to take place on Saturday, July 6 at 9 a.m. in downtown Prescott, sponsored by Barrett Propane. The parade will kick off with the grand marshal honoree, Ibbie Champie. She is the daughter of Lawton Champie, a thirteen-time rodeo champion across various events. Lawton won the All-Around in 1931, 1934 and 1944; calf roping in 1939; steer wrestling in 1931 and 1934; saddle bronc riding in 1924, 1926 and 1931. However, Slim Riley got the credit for winning the bronc riding in 1924 because he got hurt the first day and Lawton was bucked off the first day, so, Lawton filled in for Riley the last three days and won the event. In those days it was all right for someone to ride for another person. Demonstrating true cowboy spirit, they shared the reward money.

This year’s highlights include Beau Schueth, a national champion bullﬁghter who grew up in O’Neill, NE; Quirt Hunt, champion bullﬁghter, who is joining the Prescott rodeo for his 21st consecutive year; Matt Tarr known for his quick wit and passion for making people smile and laugh as a rodeo clown; Tomas Garcilazo, featuring his mastery and artistry of La Charreria, Broken Spoke Clydesdales, a fan favorite, and Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame Announcer, Randy Corley, joined by Co-Announcer, James Horcasitas to highlight the eight performances.

Prescott NOW: How long have you guys been playing together? 90 Proof: 90 Proof was started about five years ago. Jon Hassessian and I (Josh Rice) started the band playing in local bars getting our name out there. Keith Rhodes, our current lead guitar player, joined the band originally on bass guitar but is now our lead guitar player. He started with us New Year’s Eve in 2021. Fred Bogen, our current bass guitar player is the newest addition joining us in late 2023. We have some special guest appearances happening in 2024 that I feel will keep the music fresh for everyone. Prescott NOW: What genre or genres of music do you play? 90 Proof: We play rock, grunge and alternative music from the ‘90s. This was a time when most of the guys were in high school. The music was so influential during that time, and I think we all just took it in and loved it. Bands like Pearl Jam, Collective Soul, Candlebox, Nirvana, the list goes on and on with bands that had a “new” sound,” and the energy was addictive. Prescott NOW: What is the key to being a successful musical act in Prescott and Northern Arizona? 90 Proof: Great question. From the beginning, we wanted to play

music we thought was relevant to the crowd we were trying to attract. We knew that would be more challenging in the Prescott and Northern Arizona markets as we were surrounded primarily by a country or classic rock music scene. We stayed true to ourselves and delivered to our fans. Turns out that there are enough of them in the area to support us and the venues we play. We are truly blessed by everyone who comes to our shows. We strive to create a win-win relationship with the venues we play. That really helps the relationship. Getting people to show up to the shows and patronize the venues we play are keys to success, for sure. Another big thing is to space out how often you play. I understand this is tough for some working bands, but going to Flagstaff or Phoenix and then back to Prescott has helped keep the venues packed when we play. Oh yeah, and don’t forget to make sure you sound decent. LOL Prescott Now: What’s the smallest audience you’ve played for; the biggest? 90 Proof: Jon and I played acoustically shortly after the band was created for a small little art fair. I bet there was a total of five

people watching, and three of them were friends. We played a festival in Phoenix and there was about 5,000 people there. That was a fun show. Prescott Now: Where do you find the inspiration for your songwriting or performances? 90 Proof: We just love to play and perform the songs that we put into the set list. These are songs we all grew up to and most of our fans know all the words to. The music is something not every band plays, so it’s special and different. You would be pressed to find more than a small handful of bands in the entire state playing the type of music we do. And we were one of the first, if not the first, to do it with some success in this area. We take pride in that, and it shows in our performances. Increased Inventory Available Longer Across the Quad Cities

During March, 429 new homes were listed across the Quad Cities, according to the housing market report released by the Prescott Area Association of REALTORS® (PAAR). In the prior year, only 325 homes were listed during March, resulting in a 32% positive change year-over-year. The number of new listings increased in each of the Quad Cities except Dewey-Humboldt, which experienced a decrease of 16.7% overall with six fewer new listings this year. Prescott Valley saw the largest growth with a 61.3% increase in new listings from 75 in March of last year to 121 this year. Prescott and Chino Valley both sustained considerable increases of 31.1% and 23.5% respectively. The influx of new listings resulted in an increased amount of active inventory in the area despite the minor decline in overall sales. The Quad Cities saw a 41.4% increase in active inventory year-over-year, with 946 homes on the market this March compared to 669 last year. Each of the four cities saw substantial growth in amounts of active inventory, even with increased sales in some areas. Chino Valley experienced the largest jump with a 64.1% positive change in the total amount of active inventory from 64 active listings last March to 105 this year; Prescott Valley, 58.1% increase, 245 active listings; Prescott, 33.4%, 515 active listings. The smallest increase in the amount of active inventory was seen in Dewey-Humboldt at 26.6%, despite a decrease in the number of new listings and an increase in total sales. The Quad Cities had a combined 4.1 months of inventory,

with Prescott leading the way at 5.2 months of inventory. Each city has more than 3 months of inventory available, respectively. A contributing factor to the high amount of active inventory is the extended duration of homes on the market. The median number of days on market for listings in the Quad Cities increased year-over-year by 16.7%. With increased inventory and homes being for sale longer, the market became a bit less competitive, affecting overall sales and sale prices.

In terms of total sales, the Quad Cities saw a slight reduction of 8.8% with 229 sales in March this year compared to 251 in 2023. The median sale price in March for all of the Quad Cities was $510,000. Iconic Voices by Women in Music More than 30 women performers active throughout Prescott and the rest of Arizona’s music scene converged at the Elks Theatre Feb. 23, 2024 to pay tribute to iconic pop and rock artists ranging from Stevie Nicks and Cyndi Lauper to Aretha Franklin and Dolly Parton. The singers and musicians (including a handful of men) mixed and matched themselves as they recreated their heroines’ finest moments at the sold-out show. The idea grew out of Merri McKee’s open-mic Women Music Monday showcases at Back Alley Wine Bar, and she produced and sang at the concert. Other performers included Mary Alberts, Christy Fisher, Robin Noble, Stefani Savage, the Womansong choir and many more.

by John Mason Glen, Ph.D., for Western Heritage Foundation This was the theme song of the TV show 26 MEN, which aired from October 1957 to June 1959, during the heyday of Westerns on TV, recounting the adventures of the Arizona Rangers. Much of the series was filmed at Cudia City at the corner of Camelback Rd. and 40th St. in Phoenix. Arizona has a long and storied history with law enforcement. The first attempted constabulary occurred in 1860 but was disbanded and the men entered the Confederate army in 1861. The second, in 1882, only lasted for one month when the Legislature refused to authorize funding. As the century turned, crime was rampant in Arizona; railroad and stagecoach robberies were commonplace, brawls and shootings frequent, and cattle rustling was a major industry. In 1901, to rid the territory of corruption and crime with the ultimate goal of statehood, Gov. Nathan Oakes Murphy established the Rangers. In 1903 the force was increased

to 26 men and modeled after the famous Texas Rangers. Arizona’s force was well-trained, well-armed and quite successful in bringing stability to the territory that had been denied statehood by the U.S. Congress due to a lack of law and order. Over 4,000 rustlers, horse thieves and numerous notorious miscreants were arrested by the Rangers during their nine-year life span. Their well-documented success, together with political pressures, led to the Legislature disbanding the group in 1909. After the termination, many of the Rangers remained in law enforcement; Capt. Henry Wheeler was later sheriff of Cochise County and Capt. Tom Rynning, a former member of Roosevelt’s Rough Riders, became warden of the prison in Yuma. But the moribund Rangers refused to perish and in 1957, the Arizona Rangers were reestablished and are today comprised of 22 companies from Flagstaff to the Mexican border.

They are an all-volunteer civilian auxiliary assisting federal, state or local law enforcement. Three Rangers paid the ultimate price. Carlos Tafolla died of wounds sustained in a 1901 firefight with the notorious Smith Gang, cattle rustlers in Graham County; Jeff Kidder was killed in 1908 a gunfight in Sonora, assisting Mexican officials; and John Thomas was killed during a shootout in Sierra Vista in 1992. The Western Heritage Center at 156 S. Montezuma St. has numerous displays on Arizona’s history and admission is free.

Cortez St. 5:30 PM The Ride of Silence is a free bicycle event that asks its cyclists to ride no faster than 12 mph, wear helmets, follow the rules of the road and remain silent during the ride. There are no registration fees. The ride, which is held during National Bike Month, aims to raise the awareness of motorists, police and city officials that cyclists have a legal right to the public roadways. HIKE BABY GRANITE LOOP FOR

Rocky Fun

The Baby Granite Loop is a 10.5mile trek through grasslands, cottonwoods, juniper and pinyon. Hikers get a 360-degree view of Baby Granite Mountain. Meadows of wildflowers draw enthusiasts during the spring, and it’s prime birdwatching territory, too. The Tin Trough Springs Trail, No. 308, is the backbone of this circuit, starting from the Williamson Valley trailhead and heading west through chapparal grasslands, prickly pear and yucca. There are stunning views on the horizons before sloping downward into junipers and pinyons as it approaches Mint Wash. The terrain throughout this section of the loop is gently rolling and easy to tackle for most people. Rows of leafy

cottonwoods greet you at the unbridged crossing at the wash about 2 miles from the trailhead. When reaching the junction with the Baby Granite Trail (No. 320) you can choose to bear right to get onto that trail and have a flatter ascent to the loop’s high point, or go left to stay on No. 308 for the heart-pumping benefits of sharper cardio exercise. Either way you’re bound for some spectacular views. If you take No. 320 you’ll first get a roller-coaster walk through more boulder-strewn fields and beautiful views of the northeast face of the mountain before ending at a former forest service road, now the North Granite Trail (No. 671). This path loops around the north side of the mountain and takes

you through a passage between it and a couple of smaller hills farther north for more eye candy. After about a half mile, you reach the north branch of No. 308 and start navigating down the most technical part of the loop — remember to pause long enough to see what’s probably the best viewshed of your whole trip, of the southwest side of Baby Granite Mountain and those pinyon-forested slopes to the west before completing the loop and taking you back the way you came to the trailhead. The Baby Granite Loop doesn’t have much shade, so it’s particularly important to carry an adequate amount of water with you in the summer.

BABY GRANITE LOOP Most of Trail No. 308 and nearly all of No. 320 and No. 671 are within the Granite Mountain Wilderness, so remember bicycles, as well as mechanized vehicles, are prohibited within the wilderness. Dogs are allowed but must remain on a leash. Other wilderness area regulations include: Hiking groups limited to 15 people, equestrian groups limited to 10 animals.

Rock climbers may use and maintain existing fixed anchors, but no new ones are allowed. Seasonal closures affecting climbers are typically in effect between Feb. 1 and July 15 to protect peregrine falcon nesting sites. Campfires prohibited, but stoves using propane or white gas are permitted. To reach the Baby Granite Loop take Iron Springs Road to

Williamson Valley Road, turn right and travel north for 6.4 miles until reaching the Williamson Valley Trailhead, which will be on your left. The Willow Trail (No. 347) also starts here. Journeys in Spirit 2024 Showcases Traditional and Contemporary Native American Art submitted by ‘Tis Art Center & Gallery The ‘Tis Art Center & Gallery is proud to present “Journeys in Spirit 2024: Traditional and Contemporary Native Art” in partnership with the Museum of Indigenous People. Journeys in Spirit, which will open on Thursday, May 16 and run through Tuesday, June 25, is a captivating exhibition of Native American art that celebrates the rich cultural heritage and artistic traditions of indigenous communities. Featuring a diverse collection of artworks, including paintings, basketry, jewelry, photography, beadworks, ceramics and other traditional and contemporary mediums, the

exhibition is free and open to the public. Journeys in Spirit showcases the extraordinary talent of Native American artists. These artists come from varied backgrounds and cultures, with some still living within their tribal communities. Many traditions continue to be passed down through the generations; from an early age, children are taught that color and imagery carry symbolic

6th Annual Verde Valley Wine Festival The Verde Valley Wine Festival returns for its 6th year on Saturday, May 11, 2024 from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Co-sponsored by the Verde Valley Wine Consortium and the City of Cottonwood, wine enthusiasts from near and far will gather to celebrate the best of northern Arizona’s burgeoning wine industry. HIGHLANDS CENTER FOR NATURAL HISTORY

Longtime Highlands Center Director Retires Highlands Center for Natural History (HCNH) Executive Director Dave Irvine is retiring at the end of May after 14 years in the role. During his tenure, HCNH has grown tremendously and has established itself as a leading nonprofit nature education organization in the region. “It has been exciting to see this community embrace both the mission and programs offered by the Highlands Center. We have had great support from our local school districts, area foundations, and individual donors and members that have made all this growth possible,” Irvine said. “We have strived to introduce all ages to wonders of the natural world, which we believe will encourage them to become wise stewards of this land that we all cherish.”

Irvine succeeded Founding Director Nichole Trushell. The organization has doubled its staff and now engages over 10,000 youth annually in quality outdoor education programs. Participation in adult programs has grown and HCNH now attracts over 50,000 visitors annually to the Walker Road Campus for educational programs, special events or to hike the 80-acre site. In 2017, HCNH added the James Family Discovery Gardens to provide an accessible connection to nature and introduce visitors to the ecological communities of the Central Highlands. Phase II of the project included the addition of a second restroom facility and significant improvement to the parking area.

The Board of Directors has named Associate Director Sarah Vincent as the new executive director. Her professional experience includes leadership roles in outdoor and science education, including locally with the Aspen Creek Outdoor School at Chapel Rock and Embry Riddle Aeronautical University. “I am grateful for the opportunity to build upon the foundation laid by those who have come before me and in service of those who will come after me. I intend to work with this community and the Board of Directors to facilitate meaningful experiences for people in nature, about nature, and most importantly, with nature,” shared Vincent. “The Highlands Center is truly a deeply rooted, high-impact organization with a lively and responsive future.”

Northern Arizona Wranglers Season Opener vs. Arizona Rattlers Greater Prescott’s own arena football team hosted its in-state rivals for its season opener on March 16, 2024. The Northern Arizona Wranglers held the home-field advantage at Findlay Toyota Center in Prescott Valley against the Arizona Rattlers and fought a close game but eventually lost 50-41. The Wranglers ended the first quarter with a 13-9 lead after quarterback Joshua Jones spun out of a receiver’s tackle to score on the opening drive and wide receiver Arsiah “RZ” McCorker landed a 55-yard touchdown after the Rattlers scored their first. The Rattlers jumped ahead with two touchdowns at the start of the second quarter. McCorker answered with a second kickoff return turned touchdown, followed by two more Rattlers touchdowns traded with two field goals from the Rattlers, who were down 37-26 at halftime. The third quarter was on the low-scoring end, with the Wranglers only managing a field goal against a Rattlers touchdown. McCorker scored his third touchdown of the night at the start of the fourth quarter, and won a huge stop on fourth and goal from the one-yard line, but the Rattlers forced a turnover and scored a touchdown once again. The Wranglers lost their first game of the season but won two weeks later 54-48 against the Tucson Sugar Skulls.
