Prescott PULSE

For a relatively small community Greater Prescott has an astoundingly vibrant music scene. You can hear live music pouring out of bars, saloons, breweries, clubs, coffeehouses, restaurants, concert halls, parks, galleries and anywhere else a crowd might form. Every month we’re putting a different local act in the spotlight.

Colin Fraher Music

Prescott NOW: How long have you been playing?

Colin Fraher: I have been playing music seriously for four years. I had always been interested in playing and singing, but it wasn’t until I had seen Tyler Childers in concert for the first time that it felt like such a strong passion that was obtainable.

Prescott NOW: What genre of music do you play? What about them inspires you?

Colin: The genre range I play is rock (classic and alternative), grunge and songwriter country.

I pull different inspiration from each level of the genres I play. Grunge like Alice in Chains and Soundgarden pull deep inspiring lyrics into a story to be told. It gives the sense of looking into the darker side of someone’s feelings.

Rock is where music started. Hendrix and Led Zeppelin paved the way from classic to alternative rock bringing actual people behind songs. Feelings such as energy and drive can give everyone a sense of relation with every type of rock that’s out there. I actually was inspired by the infamous

Hendrix riff to write my song ‘Hey Baby’.

Finally, songwriter country gives the feeling of obtainability. If you tell your story, with all of your heart, passion and drive, someone will listen.

Prescott NOW: What is the key to being a successful musical act in Prescott and Northern Arizona?

Colin: The key to success here and anywhere really is getting out there and talking to people. The more you jam and play open mics, the more musicians you are going

Photos courtesy of Alyssa Fraher with You & I Events

to meet. It’s all about community in music.

Prescott Now: What’s the smallest audience you’ve played for; the biggest?

Colin: I played for four people at a local wine bar on a very cold night. It was my wife, the waitress and a couple who happened to come in on a whim.

The largest crowd was at the Birdcage’s 10th reopening anniversary party. It was packed wall to wall and what felt like over a hundred people all singing along and cheering.

Prescott NOW: Where do you find the inspiration for your songwriting or performances?

Colin: I find my inspirations through my thoughts, feelings and experiences. I use music almost as my journal to get my feelings out and express everything going on around me.

Prescott NOW: What brought you to Prescott?

Colin: I was born and raised here in Prescott. Actually, I was born in Cottonwood, raised in Prescott Valley and moved closer to Prescott as I got older to be more involved in music.

Prescott’s William Owen ‘Buckey’ O’Neill was a National Hero

“Former Prescott, AZ mayor killed in fighting in Cuba,” screamed newspaper headlines on July 2, 1898 in announcing the death of Prescott’s favorite son, William Owen “Buckey” O’Neill.

One of the most prominent displays at the Western Heritage Center at 156 S. Montezuma St. in historic “Whiskey Row” is a tribute to the soldiers of the 1st Volunteer Cavalry of the SpanishAmerican War, better known as “Roosevelt’s Rough Riders.”

O’Neill served as captain of Company A of the regiment.

Born in 1860 in St. Louis, O’Neill arrived in Prescott, Arizona Territory in 1880, and was employed as a newspaper editor, miner, sheriff and politician. His avocation was gambling, which resulted in his nickname “Buckey” from his tendency for “Bucking the Tiger” while playing games of chance, especially faro, against the odds.

O’Neill was hired by famous Phoenix lawman Henry Garflas in the early 1880s but moved to

Prescott where he served as editor of the Arizona Miner for a short time before being elected captain of the “Arizona Greys,” a local militia unit.

At one point the “Greys” were serving as honor guard at the hanging of a convicted horse thief, and when the trap was sprung O’Neill fainted, causing him obvious severe embarrassment.

In 1888, O’Neill was elected sheriff of Yavapai County. Shortly into his term, four masked miscreants robbed the Atlantic and Pacific eastbound train near Diablo Canyon, east of Flagstaff. After a week of tracking the outlaws, O’Neil’s posse caught up with the bandits and a desperate firefight ensued. The robbers were arrested, convicted and sent to the Territorial prison in Yuma.

In 1889, O’Neill married Pauline Schindler, a local schoolteacher. An early advocate for women’s suffrage, she engaged in numerous civic and charitable endeavors following her husband’s death in

Cuba, even serving two terms in the Arizona State Legislature.

In 1898, as tensions between Spain and the United States heightened principally over the harsh treatment of Cubans by Spanish authorities, President McKinley called for 125,000 volunteers to augment the pitifully small American army. O’Neill was one of the first to enlist and was quickly elected captain of Company A.

After training in San Antonio and Tampa, the unit went to Cuba, and it was there at the foot of the San Juan Heights, awaiting orders to advance and under fire from Spanish Mauser rifles that O’Neill met his fate. Convinced that an officer must display immense courage, he refused to take cover, commenting that “the Spanish bullet has yet to be molded that can kill me.” Within seconds an enemy bullet found its mark. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery in a hero’s grave.

Come see all we have to offer at the Western Heritage Center and tell ‘em “Buckey sent you.”

CENTENNIAL TRAIL

Opened in 2012 in honor of the state’s centennial celebration that year, this scenic trail takes you up and down past intimidating yet magnificent boulders and some of the most sweeping views in Prescott, culminating with views of ancient petroglyphs at the trail’s highest point. The trail’s proximity to the Rodeo Grounds gives it connectivity to the Greenways Trail System that follows Miller Creek before threading through downtown.

The Centennial Trail is the product of the City of Prescott’s collaboration with the developer of the surrounding Preserves housing development, the Over the Hill gang and several other groups, giving this formerly informal trail new convenience for users. This semi-urban trail has two access points with parking lots. One is reached by turning south onto Kile Street from Iron Springs Road, which takes you to the midway point, offering a 2-mile outand-back trip either direction. The other is just past the eastern terminus of the trail on Westridge Drive west of Gail Gardner Way. Here, walk down Westridge until you see the trailhead on your right.

Parking fees: None

Uses: Hiking, mountain biking

Distance: 1.94 miles (one way)

Level of difficulty: Moderate

Elevation: 5,447 feet to 5,729 feet

C entennial Trail

IS A WALK THROUGH TIME

The Centennial Trail follows a curving path through boulders and canyons studded with scrub oak and ponderosa, all just more than half a mile west of Dignity Health-Yavapai Regional Medical Center. Its rocky slopes and sometimes technically challenging directions give hikers a good workout throughout its semi-urban setting, with a good run of elevation gain at the end before seeing some remarkable petroglyphs. There are a few ways to work this trail. Starting at the east end of the 2-mile crooked crescent on Westridge Drive you can proceed to the other end and turn back for a good 4 miles or turn around at the Kile Street trailhead at the halfway point for 2. You also can park at the end of Kile and travel 2 miles in either direction.

To see the trail in its entirety begin at the Westridge parking lot, which is about a fifth of a mile away from the Centennial

trailhead. You first come to a series of steps, then travel a route that offers panoramic views of much of Prescott’s viewshed, including the Rodeo Grounds, Thumb Butte and Granite mountains. You’ll also see industrial and residential areas before reaching the second trailhead and crossing into the more challenging half of the path, watching the area’s continuing development.

Tackling steeper terrain, the trail follows Rockwood Drive above its path until it plunges into a secluded tree-lined canyon, which you cross three times on the trail before it loops around the petroglyphadorned boulders that mark the end of the trailway and sends you heading back the way you came.

The Centennial Trail is as lovely under a blanket of snow as at other times of the year and you have a better chance of being treated with a glimpse of a running stream. Be careful, though, of the mud and ice that forms when it starts to melt!

First Month of 2024 Brings an Increase in New Listings Across the Quad Cities

The number of homes listed during the month of January in the Quad Cities increased by 7.9% year-overyear, according to the housing market report released by the Prescott Area Association of REALTORS® (PAAR). A total of 272 homes were listed for sale last month compared to only 252 in the year prior. The number of new listings increased in each of the Quad Cities but Prescott Valley, which experienced a minor decrease of 3 less new listings in January of this year compared to last. DeweyHumboldt saw the largest increase of new listings with a considerable 44.4% change year-over-year, while Prescott and Chino Valley sustained 9.2% and 14.3% increases, respectively.

In terms of total sales, the amount in the Quad Cities declined by only 1.1% in the form of two less sales in January of 2024 compared to January of 2023. Prescott experienced a notable 23.2% increase in sales, while Chino Valley and Dewey-Humboldt saw sales increases of 6.7% and 7.7% individually. The only city that reflected a decrease in sales was Prescott Valley, with a decrease of 25.3% year-over-year. January saw 207 sales in the Quad Cities with Prescott leading at 85.

The amount of active inventory has steadily increased with the addition of many new listings in the area despite the minor decline in overall sales in the Quad Cities. An overall increase of 20.7% in active inventory yearover-year occurred in the Quad Cities, with noticeable growth in each one of the four cities. Dewey-Humboldt saw a 36.1% positive change in the total amount of active inventory, and Chino Valley was close behind with a 31.1% increase. A 13.5% increase was seen in Prescott, while Prescott Valley had an inventory increase of 25.4% regardless of a decline in new listings.

With an increase in active inventory across the Quad Cities comes an overall rise in months of inventory by 22.5% year-over-year. The four cities have a combined 4.9 months of inventory available to buyers, with the only decrease from 2023 to 2024 occurring in Prescott in the amount of 9.3%. Prescott Valley exhibited the greatest escalation in months of inventory with a substantial 68% hike year-over-year. The median number of days on market for listings in the Quad Cities is 64 days.

The median sales price of homes in the Quad Cities rose by 11% in January of this year compared to last. Two of the four cities contributed to this overall increase with their own respective raises, while the other two cities underwent decreases in sales prices. Prescott and Chino Valley both experienced increases of 11.7% and 2.3% respectively, with the median sales price sitting at $575,000 in Prescott and $377,500 in Chino Valley.

Prescott Valley experienced only a 3.9% decrease with the median sales price settling at $440,000, while the median sales price in Dewey-Humboldt declined to $342,950, a 10.9% decrease.

“As the year begins, more homes are being put on the market increasing the overall amount of inventory,” said Jeanelle Shearer, PAAR’s 2024 President. “With increased inventory and an anticipated decline in interest rates, more buyers will enter the market. An experienced REALTOR® can guide buyers through the home buying process as the housing market gains momentum in 2024.”

Editor’s Note: All data is compiled from the Multiple Listing Service of the Prescott Area Association of REALTORS®and includes single-family, manufactured, mobile, modular, condos, and townhouse residential activity in Prescott, Prescott Valley, Chino Valley, and Dewey-Humboldt.
