For a relatively small community Greater Prescott has an astoundingly vibrant music scene. You can hear live music pouring out of bars, saloons, breweries, clubs, coffeehouses, restaurants, concert halls, parks, galleries and anywhere else a crowd might form. Every month we’re putting a different local act in the spotlight.

Prescott NOW: How long have you guys been playing together?
STEFnROCK: First paid gig was in October of 2012.
Prescott NOW: What genre of music do you play?
STEFnROCK: We play just about everything. Classic rock, old and new country, pop, disco. Whatever the crowd is looking for.
Prescott NOW: What about them inspires you?
STEFnROCK: We love to play music that makes people feel something.
Prescott NOW: What is the key to being a successful musical act in Prescott and Northern Arizona?
STEFnROCK: Making the crowd part of the show. We always take requests.
We know we’re not the best musicians in town, but we bring
people together and make them happy. That’s our main goal.
Prescott Now: What’s the smallest audience you’ve played for; the biggest?
STEFnROCK: We once played for two people at Rachel’s Kitchen in Las Vegas. We played several gigs for about 1,000 people including the Prescott Summer Concert Series.
Prescott NOW: Where do you find the inspiration for your songwriting or performances?
STEFnROCK: The fans are the inspiration. If they’re having a good time, then we’re having a good time.
Prescott NOW: What brought you to Prescott?
STEFnROCK: In 2021, Rocky almost died from COVID pneumonia. We had lost a big chunk of our work since the shutdown. We decided it was time for a change and started
looking for a new place to live.
Stefani Googled somewhere in the U.S. with four seasons that weren’t too extreme, and Prescott showed up. So we hopped in our little tiny smart car and drove to Prescott. We immediately loved it. (The two have been partners since 2012.)
So we made the decision to move here from Las Vegas. We didn’t know a single person and we had no gigs lined up. So we drove to Vegas and back every weekend to keep working. We got our first gig in Prescott from Connie at the Windsock. Then we went to an open mic at the Back Alley Wine Bar. Sheri Shaw happened to be there that night and hired us on the spot.
Since then we’ve managed to establish ourselves playing five nights a week on average. That means no more trips to Las Vegas! We absolutely love Prescott and we feel fortunate to be here.

submitted by Yavapai College
Calling all artists! Yavapai College’s Prescott Campus Art Gallery announces that submissions are now open for Art in the Pines: The Fifth Annual Prescott Plein Air Festival. Plein air painters from everywhere are encouraged to bring themselves and their works to Prescott and paint the pine forests, boulder-lined highland lakes and historic architecture.
Submissions for the Plein Air Festival close April 5.
The Plein Air Festival celebrates Prescott’s gorgeous vistas, compelling history and architectural beauty, as artists create amazing works on the trailheads and scenic byways of the Prescott area during the festival.
The Festival runs October 9-13, with a reception and sale at YC’s Prescott Campus Gallery in the Jim and Linda Lee Performing
Arts Center on October 13 from 1:30 to 4:00 PM. Artists will receive 50 percent of sales of paintings completed during the Festival. The Best of Show winner will be awarded $1,000 and a solo exhibition at the Yavapai College Patty McMullen-Mikles Gallery in Clarkdale.
This year’s Plein Air Festival judges will be artists Bill Cramer and Dawn Sutherland.
The artist application fee is $35. Plein Air artists may apply via the Yavapai College Prescott Art Gallery’s Submittable Page, at: https://yavapaicollegeartgallery. submittable.com/submit
The submissions will be juried, and 20 artists accepted for the festival. Artists will be notified of acceptance between April 12 and 15. Each accepted artist must donate a signature painting to be
included in a pre-festival charity auction to benefit scholarships and student art prizes at Yavapai College. The auction will take place from Sept. 15th – Oct. 9th. Donated paintings not sold at auction will become part of Yavapai College’s permanent art collection. Festival staff will arrange pick-up days for donated paintings in Phoenix, Sedona and Flagstaff.
For further information on the submissions process, or Art in the Pines: The Fifth Annual Prescott Plein Air Festival, please contact Yavapai College Prescott Art Gallery Manager Tim Hull at: Timothy.Hull@ yc.edu or call 928.776.2031.
Submissions close April 5 for participating artists and their works.

The number of homes listed during February in the Quad Cities increased by 13.5% year-over-year, according to the housing market report released by the Prescott Area Association of REALTORS®.
Last month, 286 homes were listed for sale compared to 252 in February 2023. Across the Quad Cities, the number of new listings increased in each area except Dewey-Humboldt, which experienced a 4.2% decrease in February compared to 2023.
The amount of active inventory in the Quad Cities has continued to rise at an impressive rate with the influx of new listings. The area experienced a 32.1% increase in active inventory year-over-year, with substantial rises in each of the four areas. Chino Valley saw the greatest increase at 47% with 97 active listings this February compared to 66 in 2023.
The median number of days on market for listings in the Quad Cities during February was 56 days, a 36.6% increase year-over-year. Despite an overall positive change in the median number of days on market in the four cities as a whole, only Prescott saw an individual increase while Prescott Valley, Dewey-Humboldt and Chino Valley saw decreases. Prescott experienced an astounding 156.7% increase in the median number of days on market for listings, sitting at 77 days last month.
The median sales price of homes in the Quad Cities rose by 3.1% year-overyear, with only one city contributing to the overall increase. Prescott experienced a 20.4% increase in the median sales price of homes, while the other three cities all saw noticeable decreases. The median sales price dropped the most in Dewey-Humboldt, decreasing
24.4% and settling at $310,000. Chino Valley and Prescott Valley both experienced reductions of 7.7% and 3.7%, respectively, with the median sales price sitting at $360,000 in Chino Valley and $438,200 in Prescott Valley.
The highest median sales price of all the cities was $589,000 in Prescott. The median sales price in February for all of the Quad Cities was $469,185.
“The housing market has started to take off with an upswing of sales in February across the Quad Cities,” said Jeanelle Shearer, PAAR’s 2024 President. “A larger supply of homes
paired with lower prices increases the likelihood of buyers finding a house they love, and can also afford. Potential buyers will continue to enter the market as they see affordable homes becoming more readily available.”
Editor’s Note: All data is compiled from the Multiple Listing Service of the Prescott Area Association of REALTORS®and includes single-family, manufactured, mobile, modular, condos, and townhouse residential activity in Prescott, Prescott Valley, Chino Valley, and Dewey-Humboldt.

This trail can be traveled as an outand-back line for a total of about 8.5 miles, but many users take advantage of the others it intersects with to create a loop of about 10 miles that showcases a variety of landscapes.
After hiking the first mile in on No. 37, many recommend continuing on that trail until reaching No. 261 and turning right to continue the

loop, with the climb to the top of Granite Mountain an add-on for those prepared for it.
Trail No. 261 crosses several small streambeds before reaching a stand of tall pines that block some of the surrounding views but provide some welcome shade. After a little less than 2 miles you’ll reach another junction with Trail No. 40, which features boulders and woods as you climb back up to its junction
with No. 37 before descending the same mile that started the loop.
To reach the trailhead take Iron Springs Road through Prescott; about 3 miles past Granite Basin Road you will see it on your right.
Parking fees: None
Uses: Hiking, biking, equestrian
Distance: 4.2 miles (one way)
Level of difficulty: Moderate
Elevation: 5,976 feet to 6,557 feet
When you’re looking for a sunny winter hike on a trail that might get a little too sunny in the summer, give the Little Granite Mountain Trail (No. 37 in the Prescott National Forest’s inventory) a chance.
It takes you past some spectacular boulders, rock formations and vistas on the western slope of the mountain while connecting with with several trails offering forays into woodsier, more lush terrain on the east side.
Beginning your trek at the trailhead at its southern end, just off Iron Springs Road, you take a gradual climb past shrubs and cactuses mixed with low-rise to mid-size junipers and pines. This is where you encounter some of the most impressive and improbable boulders you’ll find in the Prescott area, some sprouting like trees out of the ground.
After approximately a mile you reach the highest point in the trail and the junction with the Clark Spring Trail 40, which will be on the right. Continue straight to stay on No. 37 and follow the southwestern rim of the Granite Mountain Wilderness.

You’ll see rock-strewn hillsides and find plenty of boulders you might want to scramble on if you’re so inclined, but it’s best to stay on the trail. You’ll see peaks all around you, including Granite and Little Granite Mountain in the immediate east and north, Sugarloaf Mountain in the southwest and the Sierra Prietas to the south.
You’re likely to see a wide range of wildlife from snakes and other
by
reptiles to rock squirrels and at the least evidence of larger mammals traveling through the area.
Trail No. 37 ends at Blair Pass as it meets Granite Mountain Trail No. 261 — if you keep going straight on 261, after a steep ascent you’ll reach the summit of Granite Mountain. Note that you’ll be entering the wilderness area, which prohibits bicycles along with motorized vehicles.

by John Mason Glen, Ph.D., for Western Heritage Foundation
In the late 1930s, when the average salary was around $1,500 per year, cowboy movie star Tom Mix was reportedly earning over $20,000 per week.
Of his nearly 300 films, 65 were made in Prescott in and around Williamson Valley and the Granite Dells, or at his own ranch here, the Bar Circle A, now part of the Yavapai Hills subdivision.
Born in Mix Run, Pennsylvania in 1880, Mix enlisted to fight in the Spanish-American war, and although his unit never went overseas the Fox studio publicist later claimed he had been with Roosevelt’s Rough Riders’ charge up San Juan Hill.
When Mix rode in T.R.’s inaugural parade with a group of Rough Riders, the legend became fact.
Mix broke into the film industry in 1909, did his own stunts in action-
packed westerns, and along with “Tony, the wonder horse,” became Fox’s highest paid star but left after a salary dispute with studio head Joseph P. Kennedy, Sr.
Mix later made nine “talkies” with Universal, but injuries required him to quit filming. His final screen appearance was in a 15-episode serial called The Miracle Rider in 1935. He reportedly earned over $6 million during his career.
However, free spending, alimony (he was married five times), and poor business decisions robbed Mix of much of his wealth. Nevertheless, his love of fast cars necessitated his purchase of a brand new supercharged 1937 Cord 812 “cigarette cream” (yellow) Phaeton.
The fancy automobile would prove to be his undoing. On Oct. 12, 1940, following a nearly allnight party with friends in Tucson,
Mix drove toward Phoenix, and undoubtedly driving beyond his limits, failed to negotiate a sharp turn. The car flipped, and a heavy metal suitcase, unsecured in the backseat, hit Mix in the head, killing him.
The gully, near Florence, was named “Tom Mix Wash” in his honor. A stone obelisk memorial along AZ-79 was dedicated by Gene Autry. Mix has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and his boot prints, palm prints, and hoof prints of “Tony” may be seen outside Hollywood’s Grauman’s Chinese Theatre.
The Western Heritage Center at 156 S. Montezuma St. is the repository for numerous film posters and memorabilia, including the iconic telephone booth from the Palace bar featured in Junior Bonner , starring Steve McQueen. Admission is free.
