OOur History
ne local organization preserving and promoting Elkhorn history is the Walworth County Historical Society, headquartered in Elkhorn. With a number of locations reserved for its many programs and activities throughout the year, the WCHS continues to fulfill its mission of collecting, preserving and sharing the area’s rich history.
Nestled on a quiet street in Elkhorn, the Webster House Museum is a well-maintained, white clapboard house, containing Civil War and Victorian period items. The composer Joseph Philbrick Webster once owned the home. Both the structure and its famous owner played an important part in the history of Elkhorn, as he’s best known for the Civil War camp song “Lorena” and the still-popular hymn “The Sweet By and By.” The Resource Center also is located on-site and contains a wealth of documents and records dating back to the early 1800s. Heritage Hall is home to the Veterans Memorial Museum and serves as host to many of the Society’s special programs and events.

of Elkhorn has rehomed an M-60 tank as a display piece and memorial in Veterans Park. The M-60 was the United States’ main tank used after World War II, and while it didn’t see a lot of service, the M-60 was used by the U.S. and its allies to provide peace through deterrence.

History
The Elkhorn Community welcomes this new addition as a memorial to the men and women who served and those who continue to serve today.
The “Christmas Card Town” title dates back to 1952, when the “March of Time” TV series chose Elkhorn for one of its shows featuring small American towns during the holiday season. In 1958, the Ford Motor Company commissioned Cecile Johnson, a New York artist, to paint a series of six watercolor paintings to illustrate an article for its company magazine. Johnson, who had spent a recent Christmas in Elkhorn, was inspired by our small town charm and spirit, and chose the town as the setting for her paintings. Later, a major publisher chose five of the six paintings as artwork for Christmas cards, which have been printed and reprinted thousands of times.
Local artist Jan Castle-Reed was then commissioned by the Elkhorn Chamber and completed her series of 15 paintings in 2011.
In 2012 a new artist, T. James Carson, took over the Christmas card paintings with his rendition of the 1887 building. Carson has been providing paintings for the Elkhorn Chamber since 2012, with his most recent 2023 “A Holiday Knight in Elkhorn.” Carson’s renditions of Elkhorn history and landscapes will be treasured for years to come.
Original artists’ paintings are on display at the Matheson Memorial Library for all to enjoy. The Christmas cards, past and present, are available throughout the year at the Chamber office and area retail stores.

Evergreen Golf Club has a long tradition as one of the state’s premier places to play, and is a Golf Digest four-star, “Best Places to Play” facility. BUNDLE UP FOR COLDWEATHER ADVENTURES
Alpine Valley Resort is voted the number one family resort and ski hill snowmaker, and offers an ideal chance to get outdoors with plenty of open space for guests to spread out. EXPLORE OUR NATURAL SURROUNDINGS
Hansen Preserve is a scenic, 77-acre property along Sugar Creek in the Town of Lafayette that offers hiking, fishing, kayaking, canoeing and wildlife watching. The main trail follows the creek for approximately one-half mile to a rare oak opening. It contains a variety of landscapes, including shrub car, sedge meadow and an oak savanna.
Price Park Conservancy is a nature-based recreation park and includes several walking trails and a meadow area planted with wildflowers. A picnic shelter is located near the parking lot and is available to reserve. What’s more, it features Bark Park — an off-leash canine play area featuring a five-foot chain link fence with a double gated entry, picnic tables, benches, a hitching post and doggy waste receptacles.
Petersen Island Woods Preserve is a 40-acre preserve located north of Elkhorn at Lauderdale Lakes on a peninsula between Green Lake and Middle Lake. This preserve has a hiking trail with a Leopold bench that overlooks one of the deepest kettles. Petersen Island Woods Preserve is located at the east end of Oak Park Road.
White River Trail/Path is a 19-mile trail that follows a former rail corridor as it travels between Elkhorn in Walworth County and Dover in Racine County, with a short gap in Burlington. The trail passes by numerous bridges, scenic vistas, quaint
towns, farmlands and wetlands. The trail is great for walking, hiking and snowmobiling, and there’s even a two-mile stretch open for horseback riding. The trail is operated by Walworth and Racine counties and is within five miles of Lake Geneva and Big Foot Beach State Park.
EMBRACE LAKE LIFE
Elkhorn Lake is located at Babe Mann Park and boasts 29 acres perfect for canoeing and fishing. See a free water ski thrill show during the summer on Saturdays in June and July.
Lauderdale Lakes is located six miles north of Elkhorn and consists of a small chain of three lakes: Mill, Middle and Green lakes. Local residents and visitors alike enjoy fishing, boating, waterskiing, swimming and sailing. In the winter, Lauderdale

Elkhorn’s park system consists of several parks, all of which are unique. Sunset Park, Elkhorn’s premier park, is where the Park & Recreation Administration Center is located. The park offers a wide array of activities, such as baseball and softball fields, tennis courts, public swimming pool, picnic and playground areas. It is also home to Elkhorn’s historic band shell where the Holton Elkhorn Band performs each summer.
