Top 10 Best Experiences in Lake Geneva
By Katie Scrivano
For more than 150 years, the Geneva Lakes area has welcomed thousands of visitors to southeast Wisconsin to enjoy a wide array of recreational activities – all set amidst the natural beauty of the lakeside. From award-winning restaurants to golf courses designed by legends of the game to sipping and shopping through downtown Lake Geneva, the region offers you countless, unrivaled experiences to choose from.
Need help finding a place to start? We’ve curated a list of the Top 10 best experiences to plan during your visit.
Hit the Links:
With an abundance of both public and private courses, the area is known as the place for a great round of golf! Challenge your game at courses designed by legends Arnold Palmer, Lee Trevino and Gary Player at Geneva National Resort & Club. Or choose between the Brute’s 68-bunker course and the Scottish-inspired Highlands at Grand Geneva Resort. Other area courses to consider include Abbey Springs, Evergreen Golf Club, Hawk’s View Golf Club and Majestic Oaks at Lake Lawn Resort.
Area cruising companies like Lake Geneva Cruise Line offers a variety of inspiring historical tours and fun, engaging options like the Ice Cream Social. Or, rent a pontoon for friends and family along the piers near Riviera Beach.
Tour Yerkes Observatory:
Both visitors and residents alike will tell you the best place to spend the day is on the water.
Housing the largest refracting telescope in the world, and once visited by Albert Einstein, this one-of-a-kind, 127-year-old observatory reopened in 2022 after undergoing extensive renovation. Over the years, it has been home
to famous astronomers, world-renowned scientists and Nobel prize winners. Tours feature historical information, the stunning Romanesque architecture and much more. Explore the fully restored 50 acres of grounds designed by the Olmsted firm, famed designers of New York’s Central Park.
Hike the Geneva Lake Shore Path:
One of the most popular experiences in the Midwest, hiking the Shore Path gives visitors a chance to peek into the properties of the historic mansions
lining the shores of Geneva Lake. Unlike any other of its kind in the country, the path is open access to the public and provides some of the best views of the lake available. The path covers the entire circumference of the lake at just under 22 miles and takes eight to 10 hours to walk – but you can start and stop at various points along the route. Along the way, you’ll see historic homes, camps, monuments, spectacular sunrises and sunsets, to name a few.
Sink Your Toes in the Sand:
Riviera Beach in downtown Lake Geneva is the most popular public beach in the area with its beautiful sand,
clear water and restaurants and shops just steps away. Other public beaches include Big Foot Beach State Park and beaches in nearby Fontana and Williams Bay.
Find Your Animal Magnetism:
Safari Lake Geneva offers a unique, drivethrough wildlife preserve where you’ll see animals from around the world roaming free while visitors sit in the grounds safely “caged” in their cars. Or enjoy the full pageantry and musical performers (horses, too!) at the Dancing Horses Theater that’s become both an adult and kid favorite.
A View Above it All:
Find a heightened perspective and soar through the clouds on a hot air balloon ride courtesy of Lake Geneva Balloon Company, or traverse the treetops at Lake Geneva Ziplines & Adventures for views of the entire area from high above.
Drench Yourself in
Nature
at the Kishwauketoe Conservancy:
A 231-acre ecological gem located in Williams Bay, Kishwauketoe is the largest watershed on Geneva Lake. Visitors can hike up to four miles of trails across multiple ecosystems, including the
Railroad Spur Trail, which spans a portion of the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad bed. The conservancy also features a four-story observation tower and 65 acres of restored meadowland home to countless wildlife.
Step Back Through Time:
Built in 1888 as a summer home for the beer baron Conrad Seipp and his family, Black Pointe Estate offers visitors the opportunity to experience lake life in the 19th century. Today it is managed by the Wisconsin Historical Society and has been named one of the top 10 historic homes estate tours in the U.S by Fodor’s Travel. Or visit an immersive, turn-of-the-century streetscape at the Geneva Lake Museum to learn more about the area’s rich history.
Sip & Savor Your Way:
With all the great spots for wine tastings and brew flights, no wonder Lake Geneva has become such a popular spot for friends to getaway and gather. Near downtown Lake Geneva, try the Bottle Shop, Studio Winery, Topsy Turvy Brewery and Mashtun Brewing. Or find nearby spots AeppelTreow Winery, Staller Estate Vineyard & Winery and Duesterbeck’s Brewing Company.
