FROM THE EDITOR'S CHAIR ď Ž By Bob Twigg

John Bramall

What an amazing event the Erzberg super enduro is, Graham Jarvis taking his fifth win was fantastic. The pictures of the steep climbs and rock sections are a reminder of the severity of the tasks facing the riders. When you see a picture of Laia Sanz down and away from her bike you know it is tough!

Editor

It is great to my mind that "Grimbo" has gone on from trials to ride so well in the super enduros. At the risk of upsetting our enduro readers, you have to be a good trials rider to succeed in that very tough sport. That should provoke some comment!

AUGUST 2019 VOL. 19 ISSUE 8 PUBLISHED ON THE 1ST OF EACH MONTH

All material for TSM should reach the editor by the tenth day of the month preceding publication.

Cover Photo: Terry Homan out on Ram Rod Mk II. The original, ridden by Dennis Allen, was one of the quickest of the blown Triumphs that proliferated in the sixties and seventies.

It was great to see Maria Costello and Julie Canipa on the TV coverage of the IOM. Maria also raced in the Lightweight TT, a first for any lady, well done! Talking of articles we still need more articles about you riders, don't be shy, it is not "big headed", readers like to see who is doing what, successful or not. Brian Ayres article in June was a good example, though of course he has been a success for many a year and still is! So, send all your details to us at TSM, highs and lows, ups and downs, when you started, what bikes you've had, make us cringe with a report of the injuries you have sustained, a rundown of your bike life, I know everyone will like reading it. On that subject the club news in the June issue was good, clubs, let us know when and where your events are taking place, tell us about the courses and the history of it all. The North East London clubs road and off road charity trial was once again a huge success, good sections a good ride round for the road course riders and a great donation to the Alzheimers charity. The club puts so much work into it, well done to all especially Darren Phypers and Chris Koch who came round to clear up the sections that us "old codgers" couldn't manage to clear! See the report from Roy Phypers. Roger and Ruth Ashby's catering facility (musn't say "burger van") advert in June was good. Also good to see was the letter regarding the food for observers from Roger in the July issue. So, if you need food at your event, give them a ring, they know what they are doing! Fingers crossed for the future of Dews Farm, due to HS2 it looks "dodgy", the loss of the ground would be a disaster for many South Midland clubs. It has been used since before the second world war and is so valuable for our trials events. Enjoy your riding.

Iwade Speedway Ladies Day ď Ž By Alan Critcher Photos by Amanda Morrison The 5th Ladies Day at Iwade (Sittingbourne Speedway) was probably the best Ladies Day held

to date. Why? This year produced some of the most enthusiastic feedback & so many requests to do it again! With the introduction of some

Trying out flat track bikes for the first time new disciplines into the Event, Flat Track (with big thanks to Wag Scott for bringing her 3 Bikes) & Trials, the variety of options enabled everyone to be riding something throughout the day. One of the popular options again this year, was the Sidecar "Taxi" Rides provided by Chris & Dan Berwick, with two completely contrasting sidecars from the Grass Track world. The popularity of this was evident in that every Lady/Girl entered rode on either or both of the sidecars. A big thank you is owed to everyone involved with Sittingbourne Speedway, for not only providing the venue, but ensuring everyone riding was well looked after.

Putoline South Midland Tough Ten Trial ď Ž By Ted North Photos by Nicola Perry did Dan Greeves on his last las lap and Elite Youth Brett Harbud on his second. secon All other class riders had a mix mixed bag of scores. Section tw two was close by, manne manned by father and son Jim and Mat Bell, consisted of steep climbs and d drops on natural terrain. O On the first lap just sseven of the fifty two rriders recorded fives b most riders of all but cl classes enjoyed the sw swoops of the hills. Alexz Kevin Nolan Wigg back riding to a high Wigg, The standard after his long lay off 9th running of due to injury,, dropped his first dab of the day. this Putoline Oils sponsored event took place at its usual venue, Round Rocket Plantation, Gerrards Cross, Bucks. by kind permission of the Haslam family After overnight rain the conditions were still very dry as the sections were set out in the two wooded areas of the land. This years Clerk of the Course Ray Haslam, set out ten sometimes very long, technical sections to be ridden three times with four routes, catering for riders of all capabilities from Elite Experts to Clubmen/Novice and Youth. Ray has spent literally hundreds of hours construction the possibility of dozens of sections in both areas, using the deep, steep sided dell to great effect. Section one in the top woods, manned by a crew from the Barnet club, started with a root infested climb to a tight turn left through two trees, turning right to descend over a log which made the left turn at the bottom very difficult. It was here that Elite rider Will McBain got off to a bad start by breaking the tape for Glen Bailey a five. Gus Oblein joined him by fiving it as 16

A ride now to section three in the dell area. A man made mainly log section within a gully finishing with a ride up onto the end of a log to ride along it for the Elite guys, and not giving too much trouble to all classes with a smattering of fives but many cleans. Section four was into the dell and proved to be the most difficult for Elite riders as it was not cleaned by this class all day. Although Sam Haslam was on holiday, C of C Ray had him ride all sections before he went and he could clean them all, just to prove it was possible. It had a wicked camber to a pivot turn up over a log on the side of the dell and this caused most of the top riders their problems. A. Brightmore on the yellow route riding Youth B and P. Meeten riding the Clubmen Over 50 white route cleaned on all visits, in fact cleaned the whole trial! Section five was a spectators delight as it took all classes up and down the dell side over a selection of logs and rocks, but for the elite riders it finished up a constructed staircase from the bottom to the top. It was here that trial winner 'Wiggy' lost his only five of the day on his last lap, with Gus Oblein and Jack Dance delighting watchers with their only cleans on this section all day. Six and seven completed the dell sections and were comparatively easy by comparison giving many riders the satisfaction of a clean. Eight, on the flat now, wound through the trees in a shallow, rock filled ditch in an omega shape needing great concentration to follow the correct route, with three observers and a punch operator checking for errors. A really tricky section that sorted the men from the boys ( and one female rider) with just one clean in the Elite and Expert entry being recorded all day. On to nine, a similar type to eight, needing three observers and octogenarian Pete Hawes sitting at the ends card with the punch all day. A much easier ride though still needing concentration to avoid the dreaded five which a handful of riders suffered. Last section of the lap was the pseudo Scottish number ten, made by Ray using his experience of riding the SSDT several times. Set in a shallow ditch it rises gently for a full 80 yards ( about 75 metres) and is full of rocks, steps and logs to give the ability to set four routes, with the

easier routes going in and out of the ditch where necessary. Alexz used his Scottish winning skills to be the only Elite to clean every lap, 2nd placed Expert A. Juffs, Clubman P. Meeten on the white route and two Youth B riders A. Brightmore and J. Snelling on yellow being the only other riders to register cleans on all three laps. A truly arm pumping, energy sapping ride observed by WMA duo Mike Murdock and Graham White with Lisa punching cards. Terrific! With the trial being run on punch cards, the results team Bob, Kevin and Zena on the results board, and Shani on her laptop in her caravan were kept very busy all day and were able to present the results shortly after the trial finished. The free observer raffle, followed by the free rider raffle with prizes kindly sponsored by John Lee & Sons Motorcycles took place whilst waiting for the results. Continued overleaf
