FROM THE EDITOR'S CHAIR n By Bob Twigg
In the June 1975 issue of the South Midland Revue the lovely Doris Lowe who penned "Doris's deliberations" was taken to task by an insurance company about how many things have to be insured in those days. Her words were "you hardly dare breath today without worrying about upsetting someone". She was not getting at the insurance firms just imagine what she would say about insurance today with the NERC thing on our backs! A July 1975 South Midland board meeting passed a resolution recommending that details of the start of events and green lane runs. This was to try and prevent the "cowboy" riders riding in the area after an event. The advent of trail bikes from the manufacturers must have caused this consternation , though today clubs are more aware of the problem of the "travelling community" taking over land suitable for their housing! I suppose they have to find somewhere to put their new Mercedes Sprinters and caravans . Some folk may not object to their presence but the old fridges etc.. can be a nuisance when you are laying out a course. Enough grumbling for now, enjoy your riding now that Summer is near. Andy Wood writes.. Grass track South East gets underway at the end of this month with the Battle of Britain two day event organised by the inspirational Frittenden club over the weekend of 25/26th. Charity Events
QQ By Andy Wood
Motorcyclists enjoying their day’s sport can be very generous it is pleasing to report. The Owls Motor Club held their annual Charity Trial back in March and would like to thank all eighty entrants as well as others who donated so generously. It turned out to be excellent trial that enabled the Club to make a £500 donation to the Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance to help them with their excellent work. Last month the Star Group organised a charity trial in aid of Cardiac Risk in the Young (C.R.Y) Arthur and Mandy Frearson principal members of the organising team are pleased to report a tremendously successful event with ninety competitors which raised a magnificent total of £908. A report of the event appears elsewhere in this issue. Later this month North East London have their Feet Up for Cancer Road and Off Road Trial on Sunday 18th May and Secretary for the event Roy Phypers has kindly provided the following details of this event. North East London M.C.C and Friends are at it again, driving around the lanes of East Hertfordshire asking the farmers and estate owners for the permission to use their ditches and land for our road trial, and with all the owners agreement we now start plotting the route and where the fuel stop will be for the riders to fill their bikes before they run out of fuel. Then armed with maps of the route and other info we apply to the MSA for the permission
to run the event, having got the permission it’s back round the lanes and estates again to plot the sections for the trial. All we can do now is hope people will come and ride and enjoy our trial. This year’s trial will be starting at Plashes Farm, Gore Lane, Colliers End, near Ware, Herts, which has good parking and is a new start area for this event but a well known venue for the local riders. The date of the event is 19th of May 2019, 10.00 am start for the road trial and 11.00 am for the off road trial. The road trial will be 36 sections at seven locations with approx. 35 miles of road for Expert, Intermediates, Clubman, Pre 65 and Twin-shock (if you can ride at clubman level) A £50 voucher for the best, expert, inter, and clubman in the road trial is donated by John Lee and Sons Motor cycles. This trial is £20 to enter before the closing date 15th May or £30 after the close date, so please enter on time. The off road trial will be four laps of ten sections all on private land and cater for all classes, Expert, Intermediate, Novice, Clubman, Pre 65 hard and easy, Twin-shock hard and easy, Pick and mix and youth A, B, C (youth you choose which route you want to ride) entry fee for this trial is £15 (£10 Youth) and the closing date is 17th May or £25 on day entry. Entry can be with the ACU online entry system, the Sporting Motor Cyclist or a form down loaded from our website northeastlondonmcc.org.uk. But if you do post the form please
make sure it arrives to the secretary before the close date. All money raised from this trial will be donated to this year’s Charity, The Alzheimers and dementia society, which is one of our landowners chosen charity, owing to his mum suffering this horrific illness for several years, so please donate and give generously, a Just Giving page will be on our website, northeastlondonmcc.org.uk or you can donate at the trial. All observers will be welcome and we can arrange transport to and from the road sections if required and you will be given a card to get food and teas etc from the refreshment/burger van. If you can observe and not sure where Plashes farm is and would like instructions as to how to get there please ring Roy 01992 582408 or Darren 01920 467811 or email roy.phypers@ntlworld. com please help if you can. We look forward to seeing you all on the 19th of May at Plashes Farm. Looking further ahead the Barham club are hard at work preparing for their charity event in aid of Pilgrim Hospices. Past events have been popular and successful and the club are keen to continue the trend; entries are now open both postal or online. If you have ridden before it will be something to look forward to if you haven’t it will be a new experience.

FORM C8PM (Premier, & Minors) 2018
From the Sunny Side of the Solent Southern Centre Moto Cross Good Friday 19th April brought Round 1 of the Southern Centre Moto Cross Championships to Whaddon Farm, Owslebury, under the promotion of Winchester MCC. Also included in the programme was the Graham Noyce Challenge and the Pre 83 125 Championship. The entry list made up to 169 riders, pretty impressive, with 40 MX1, 39 MX2, 80 various Twinshocks and Veterans, and 10 Sidecars. With some 16 races it made for a full programme, which was still in full swing when I slipped away around 5pm. Perhaps top of the bill was the race for the HB Wakefield Trophy, plus prize money. It was a race, with a selected entry, conducted at a good speed and with much skill. It was led from start to finish by MX2 rider Charlie Cole, aboard his 250 Husky. Second was Lee Foyle on a KX 250, and third was Jess Wren on a RM 250. The well designed and picturesque Owslebury circuit had been worked on during the Winter to eliminate any ruts and holes, so was riding well, and only became a little worn towards the end of the afternoon. Despite a hot and sunny day, dust was pretty much well kept at bay. It was as well that the Sidecar entry was small, as 10 outfits would make much less dust than 20. There was some good racing, with Paul Pelling/Chris Pannell (660 10
Husky) winning all three Legs, albeit having to come through the field on each occasion. MX 2 was the preserve of Wakefield winner Charlie Cole, who won Leg 1 from flag to flag, and in Leg 2 after coming through the field to take the lead on the penultimate Lap. MX 1 though was more open with Nicky Watts winning Leg 1, and late entry No 23 doing the honours in Leg 2. It was a very good afternoon, almost feeling like a time warp at times recalling Southern Centre MX of times gone by (I don't like doing the Nostalgia bit). As to the rest of 2019. There are further Winchester events at Whaddon Farm on the following dates: Sunday 19th May: Sunday 11th August: and Sunday 1st September: (Also Sunday 6th October is available in the event of any cancellation). Mayor of Havant's Run This traditional start to the classic bike run season got off to a good start on 14th April, dry weather, sunshine, a bit nippy but a good entry. There were two routes of 50 and 35 miles, finishing at the Peter Widley Fort on Portsdown Hill. I took along the Bantam, probably the slowest machine in the event, and ridden by the slowest rider, but it performed faultlessly and a very enjoyable day was provided for all, with a good contribution being raised for the Mayor's charities.. Isle of Wight Speedway Speedway on the Island is now
in full swing, and as I write the important business of the League programme is a work in progress. 25th April brought the visit of the Mildenhall Fen Tigers, a little depleted by injury but nevertheless a substantial challenge to overcome. On the promoting side, it is not always recognised how difficult it can be to prepare a track when rain is forecast, but especially so when promised rain fails to materialise. The implications are increased when the venue is situated on an offshore Island, as is the case of the Isle of Wight. The track was only lightly covered with shale, and dry, and became quite difficult to ride, to the extent that by my reckoning there were some seven falls or crashes during the evening, fortunately without injury. David Wallinger managed four crashes, in fact one in every ride, not quite sure what that means in terms of his riding skills? Overall though Mildenall kept hanging in for the battle, and lost by the small margin of 49-40. They were however running out of riders by the end and were heavily dependent on a strong score by ex moto crosser Danny Ayres. Dates for May are as follows: Thursday 2nd May Vs Plymouth Thursday 9th May Vs Cradley Heathens Thursday 23rd May Vs Stoke Potters Thursday 30th May Vs Kent Kings
n By John Bramall I have been able to get along to a couple of meetings so far, and am certainly aiming to be an ever present as far as possible. Just for a change, I managed to get along to Swindon on the evening of Easter Monday, for the first ever League Match on the revamped track, made a little smaller as part of a coordination with a local housing development. With both straights having been shortened race times are now reduced by about 2-4 seconds per race, with the new race record now standing at 61.83 seconds. Along with many others I thought the on track action would now be

more dramatic, with rides able to go into the corners both deeper and harder. The result of Swindon v Ipswich match was 51-39 to the Home side. As something different, I
managed to get away to Castle Combe for the weekend 6th-7th April. The 2019 season began with a very busy programme of 38 solo and sidecar races, plus 3 Classic Parades. There was plenty of good racing in dry conditions, big grids, and some interesting machinery on display. Another visit to CMRC during the Summer would be well worthwhile, the next three events being at Pembrey, Cadwell Park, and Anglesey. Personally I have my eye on Mallory Park, over the weekend 31st August - 1st September. It says on the advertising "without the unpopular Edwina Chicane.".Â

An Easy Event!
QQ By Bob Twigg
A cold but dry day faced the fifty five riders in the Kenton and Kingsbury clubs Matthews Cup trial at Dews Farm, Middlesex last month. Ten sections" expertly" marked out by Clerk of the Course Mick Murdoch and his team were attempted four times by all the trial hopefuls. The forecast rain luckily did not appear and the ground at Dews was remarkably dry. Graham Haslam, out on a new 125 Beta again after a year on a 250 tied with Southern visitor Mark Elms which had to be decided by STR's, Mark's travelling mate Reynard Norris took the Intermediate class win. Veteran Farnham Royal rider Pete Haines, (still riding well despite many years in the saddle) took a win in the Clubman category. Best Novice turned out to be Tim Roblett and the newly introduced twinshock winner was Steve Young on his sweet sounding TLR Honda. Mick Clarkson, who was absent due to sickness was pleased to see that his son Dave took the PRE65 easy class win on one of Mick's special Bantams! He was closely followed by another veteran Nick James. Evergreen Martin Howlett took his immaculate TY175 Yam' to a sportsman class victory. The middle yellow route sections turned out a bit easy, Pete Haines, Brian Tomkins, Steve Young and Martin Howlett all finishing "clean". Section four expertly observed by Berko club stalwart Ted North was the trickiest hazard for the well supported 50\50 Inter route. Only seventeen cleans were recorded there,

At the IXION club trial recently, John Coles, Chairman of ACU trials committee presented Maureen Faulkner with Jim Laurie Trophy. This award is
though it took the single mark off Inter' winner Reynard Norris. This class had eleven riders but the sportsman boasted twelve hopefuls! Many thanks to all who helped out before and on the day, a special thank you to Ian Reynolds for taking on the secretary spot! Sorry if the event was too easy, come to Plashes Farm in November and we will try to rectify that! The Kenton and Kingsbury clubs November Cup trial to be run at Plashes Farm near Ware on the 24th of November will be a "total" round of the South Midland centre trials championships. It will cater for all classes of rider except electric bikes. Expert, Intermediate, Novices, Clubmen, Pre 65 easy, Pre 65 Hard,Youth "A", "B" "C", there will also be a sportsman route for beginners, rigids etc.. The area is quite large and if we can get enough observers a three lap 12 section course is possible. A full lap of the farm would be at least five miles, depending on what the owner allows us to use. The regs; will be available online and of course by post and telephone! The regs; will be in this excellent magazine so when they appear "get 'em in "! Best Expert Graham Haslam

presented to those who have made significant contribution to trials over a number years. Maureen has been supporting trials at IXION for nearly 50 years. Initially when husband Bill

the big metal roller at section two difficult losing a couple of fives when he lost his balance but Aidan Bowker opted for a dab to make sure he got across and there were clean rides from Jamie Rowden and Stuart Read who both looked very stylish. On the sportsman route Tracey Haysom was so happy to clean the section she missed the ends cards but still managed to laugh about it. The fifth section back and forth across the steep valley with the exit across a fallen tree, gave local twin shock rider Doug Johnson a clean on his way to win the class. On section six Tom Frearson looked very smooth riding his new Repsol, riding clean on each lap. But it was section nine that took the most
Elliott & Graham Tickkner QQ By Shaun Fowler and Arthur Frearson A massive entry of 93 riders turned out for Arthur’s Charity Trial a combined Star group and TVTC event in aid of Cardiac Risk in the Young. The popular Sethern venue at Dunsfold hosted the event and over 40 winner John Dismore looked very stylish on the log obstacle at section one. Youth rider Danny Embury also rode it well but required a dab going up the bank. ExpertMark Budgen found 16

marks with a long ride in the stream and a rooty exit. The tenth section, a new one traversed a muddy ditch. Sidecars here had a very awkward tree stump to ride across though this caused no problem for Elliott and Graham Tickner who were riding superbly and went onto take their first ever win. Mark Kemp and Ian Allaway had to settle for second on the day three marks adrift. On the red route Rob Edwards was right on line and clean but Anthony Read slightly off line and his rear wheel spinning got away with a one. Jon Yendell on his Vertigo dropped off a steep rooty step and splashed his way along the stream at eleven for another super clean and Colin Allsop followed the same line for the same result. Here Simon Bransbury also had a very tidy ride astride his Cotton on the pre 67 yellow route though brother Jonathan not so steady also hung on for a clean. The last section, the famous Sethern rocks over a ditch then along a tree root camber and up across the concrete and rock rubble. Ollie Brimecombe was up on his rear wheel across the rock step but he needed a quick dab on landing. The tree root camber caught out a few riders Peter Steer one of them when he needed a dab to keep moving. The best sounding bike up the bank was Jack Frearson’s Triumph who rode really well throughout the trial heading the pre 67 red route class. Riding the youth beginners Leanne Budgen and Marley Lowman both rode with confidence and had big smiles on their faces but
Jamie Rowden class victor was Austin Johnson with a score of just four marks. At the finish just one rider remained on a clean sheet, Ian McCulloch riding the sportsman route just ahead of Pete Goodchild aboard his Elec motion bike. Arthur would like to thank all who took part and especially the Setting out Team, Observers and Roy for the Land. It was an excellent trial and a great day out, a big thank you for your donations we have managed to raise ÂŁ908.50. for the Charity C.R.Y. FORM C8PM (Premier, & Minors) 2018
Howard German
QQ By Dave Jenkinson It was with the greatest of regret that the H U X club received the sad news that Howard German died on the 18th March. The club had knowledge of Howard’s failing health and had been admitted to a Hospice near his son Paul, in West Sussex but the sudden news of his passing came as a shock to all. With respect to the less established members of the club, Howard German will just be a name of someone in the past but to many Howard had been the back bone of the club for many years. I joined the club in 1978 and was greeted by this character Howard, pleasantly loud and knew everything that there was to know about the HUX club, the South Midland Centre and quite a bit about bikes as well. At this time he was 34
chaperoning his young son Paul around the trials circuit and Paul did well before work, women and wanderlust got the better of him, however that didn’t deter Howard from spearheading club events, such as major anniversaries. He was also a very enthusiastic forager for new bits of land to use, and generally promoting the club events and the sport, more often than not eagerly assisted, which sometimes was a good thing, by his very supportive wife Anne. Howard first became involved with the club in the Mid 50’s, so by the 70’s he was running the show and was well respected by legendary names such as Sid Bullen, Stan Haslam and many Centre officials, with whom he would often be seen discussing the finer points of the proceedings and the world in general. Indeed, Howard’s knowledge,
enthusiasm, expertise and encyclopaedic depth of mind when encountering the rule book, made him one of those highly regarded Centre Officials for many years. His enthusiasm never waned from the time he was 16 when he brought home his first bike in 1948, a 1912 Triumph. He promptly set about road racing, joining the Vintage Motor Cycle Club and entering his first of many Pioneer runs to Brighton. The racing streak was by now embedded and he roared around the Isle of Man TT races for 8 years in a row, between 1952 -59, in 1959 he was clocked at an averaged of 87.42 MPH, who would have thought it from this guy ‘pooteling’ around on a trials bike. But the need for speed stayed with him, as for many years with his friends and club members John Denny and Richard Tann they took off to the Brecon Beacons for the crazyest of enduro’s. They come back with amazing tales of daring do, where the three of them had ended up in a bog together, or breaking down at the last moment, or vowing never to go back again as age was slowly getting the better of them. Howard’s legacy will be long remembered, not least of all for the names he fondly gave to his favoured area of the club courses, like, Howard’s Banks in Dews Farm, the infamous Muddy Slot at Bennington, which after its first time of using was always as dry as a bone but, we still call it the Muddy Slot. He was also one of the main instigators of
securing the use of Wigginton woods, which sadly has now been ruined by the 4 x 4 club. There were many forthright discussions, as Howard did have very strong views on some aspects of club life. However, this didn’t deter club members from making a unanimous decision in 2010 (when he stood down as chairman) to declare him one of only three club members since HUX was founded in 1921 to be made a life time Honorary President, for the many many years of promoting the club profile, a position he relished and was proud to receive. Indeed, for those who knew him, his personality, sincere warmth for friends, knowledge of anything connected with motor bikes and shear enthusiasm for the sport, the person Howard German will be sorely missed but, the name Howard German will live on as one of the clubs great characters. Alan Turner writes: After a battle with illness, Howard German passed
away in March at the age of 86. His name might not be well known to a later generation of riders, but in the fifties and sixties Howard made frequent appearances in the motorcycle press. Just after WWII, veteran motorcycles were regarded as an eccentric hobby. Nevertheless, they marked the start of Howard's riding career and his first bike, after extremely comprehensive rebuilding, combined with his young age, earned him national newspaper headlines. More, many more, machines followed. National Service saw him improving his mechanical skills with the RAF. He soon found like-minded motorcycle enthusiasts, which certainly smoothed his time in uniform. The RAF even sponsored his first visit to spectate at the Isle of Man TT (although higherranking officers might not have viewed the situation like that!). Back in 'civvy street' Howard returned to the Island later to race, first in the Manx Grand
Prix, where he struggled with a 'JV Special', which was actually one of the very first combinations of Manx cycle parts and Triumph engines. The TT came later, where his best finish was a 26th place in the Junior riding an AJS 7R, a good one that had received the meticulous attention of Jack Williams and served Howard well for some time. By then he was semiprofessional, working in winter, racing in summer. In those days, it was a precarious existence, but there were many more road racing successes, especially in 50cc racing, where he was among the country's best. He became deeply involved in the specialised, but popular, interest of endurance racing. With Alan Harris, he scored a class victory in the high-profile Thruxton 500 race that saw Velocette name its ultimate clubman's bike as the 'Thruxton'. Then followed a long involvement with the Mead and Tomkinson team where innovation and dedication Continued overleaf

Howard with the much lighter Drag-Waye in 1965. TW
eventually brought rewards. Howard was a member of several clubs, not as a convenience for event entries, but as an active participant or organiser. He kept himself very busy! He could be involved in just about anything that involved powered two wheelers, on road and off-road. He and Clive Waye had been friends for many years and Clive's unique Drag-Waye was a revolution in sprint bikes. Needless to add, Howard was already a successful performer in sprints
and so he played a major part in the bike's development and first track appearances. He was a true all-rounder, successful in just about anything he tried. When he finally withdrew from competition, he ran an antiques business but continued to pursue his first love of veteran bikes. He rode his handiwork in various events including many of the Sunbeam MCC's Pioneer Runs. Howard's wife, Anne, had always supported him during their long marriage and when
she had health problems, Howard devoted himself to looking after her. Unfortunately, his own medical issues then worsened. Howard's many successes never changed him as a person, he remained modest, friendly, popular and approachable. His circle of friends was a very wide one.

Busy Venue
QQ By Andy Wood The Sidcup Club’s Practice Trial on Easter Monday attracted an entry of 149 riders to enjoy the 20 sections laid out over and around the popular Canada Heights terrain. The dry conditions were ideally suited to the youth and inexperienced riders who find these events so attractive. The next two months will see no less that four different events taking place at this venue. The first weekend this month sees Round 3 of the Maxxis Championship run over the spectacular motocross circuit, a must see event for the thousands who want to witness the best riders in the country chasing the top honours. The last Sunday in May sees an event of a different nature as riders compete in a Hare and Hounds which is a round of the SE Enduro Combine Championship. Using part of the motocross circuit as well as the surrounding woodlands and open field sections, the event attracts a full entry keen to compete over the challenging course.

The following Sunday in June sees more action on the motocross circuit. This time it is an open event, a round of the SEC Championship and includes round 4 of the Tribal-MX British Sidecar Clubmans Championship. Sidecar events at the circuit always attract their own brand of enthusiasts keen to help if required and who enjoy the spectacular action that sidecars bring to the Canada Heights circuit. Just over two weeks later it’s the turn of the trials people again for the first of the Evening Practice Trials. This is a gentle evening’s exercise over 15 or so not too demanding sections and the opportunity to enjoy the pleasant social atmosphere that surrounds these events. The first Friday in July heralds an event of an entirely different nature. Kindred spirits are invited ride their motorcycles along to Canada Heights to enjoy a purely social occasion to view a wide range of interesting machinery with an opportunity to meet and make new friends. A varied selection then, do take part or come along to some of the events if you can.

FORM C8PM (Premier, & Minors) 2018
Snow-Mann Regularity Test QQ By Alan Turner
The Snow-Mann Regularity Test has been a fixture of the Vintage MCC East Sussex Section's calendar for a long time. It is a hill-climb, but takes place on Bopeep Lane, a public road, for which the club receives permission to have closed for the occasion. It is off the A27 PolegateLewes road. Absent from the calendar last year, it looked, sadly, as if the Snow-Mann had joined the long, long list of events now passed into history. However, when Chris Brown, of the neighbouring VMCC Surrey and Sussex Section, discovered that the meeting wanted only for a Secretary of the Meeting – he volunteered. It was a beacon for enthusiasm and the event was soon oversubscribed. Eligibility is fairly simple – road registered, pre-1980 and drum-brakes only.
Andy Davis accelerates his AJS out of the first sharp right-hander 52
The
classes Judy Westacott were divided into pre1940 machines, then for the post-war and classic periods. Richard Entract's 1925 Ariel was the oldest bike, most recent was John Wood's 1980 Moto-Guzzi three-wheeler, in between, single cylinder machines of varying ages. Judy Westacott's Scott was one of relatively few with more than one cylinder, although Katherine Hook was another of three ladies riding and she had her 1961 Norton Dominator twin. The format is to have a run up the hill to establish a base time. The rider is free to request an adjustment if they wish, but that is the last chance. Next three runs have to try and replicate the set time. Any deviations are accumulated and a point-per-second is lost. Lowest score wins. There are a couple of caveats. One, the contest starts with a slalom in the farmyard at the base of the hill, marked on observation trial basis, the other is that every rider has to come to a stop between two lines before re-starting and continuing over the finish line where, relaxing once more, it is possible to enjoy spectacular views across a considerable part of Sussex. Although conditions in the farmyard were bone dry, the uneven section proved to be trickier than it first appeared and surprised quite a few of the entrants. Most went straight off to set their defining climb on the hill. The event was really what the rider wished to make of it. For some, it was a steady plod to the top, for others, the chance to really exercise the throttle on the narrow, sinuous strip of
The Snow-Mann title is derived from the two gentlemen who got the event up and running some years ago, but it was apt this year as a couple of competitors had encountered snow on their way to take part. Hopefully, the impetus of seeing the Snow-Mann back this year will serve to keep it going for a lot longer. Results Class 1 and Overall: Chris Pile – 1928 Sunbeam with 2 penalty points
Adam Cafer has no time to study the spring blossoms as he hustles his wellpatinated 1954 Tiger T110 up the hill tarmac. From the start line, the lane climbs into a tightening, uphill right hander. Much of the next section, climbs as well as curves and is bordered by grass banks of varying height, but towards the top, there was a very quick way back to the paddock if you had forgotten your parachute! A final tight uphill left was closely followed by the stop box, the finish line a few yards further on. The mixture of base-line times defined the different approaches to the event. Many of the entry posted just under a minute, an average speed of perhaps around 30mph, while a confident Shaun Fenton (1974 Honda 400RR) in full-on TT-replica mode, needed to repeat his meteoric 38-second benchmark. He was not that far out, either. The final result was amazingly close. The slalom had put paid to some endeavours. Chris Pile (1928 Sunbeam Model 6) and Alan Ross (1955 BSA BB34) had both lost two marks. Both had gone clean on the slalom, so it was all down to consistency on the hill. Chris's uncorrected total was 1.9 seconds, Alan's 2.01, therefore, Chris's winning margin was 0.11 second. The team competition was equally close. Any three riders could form a team, but all scores counted. The award went to The Odd Mod Squad, a Lambretta-mounted trio who are always keen to put one over on the motorcyclists. The had tied on points with Team AMC, but the uncorrected times gave the scooterists a 0.4 second advantage over the Matchless and AJS men.
