A February comment by the TMX editor related to an AMA motocross in San Diego where the track became very muddy. With what they thought was a good intention the organisers put lime down in the hopes it would bind the mud together. The resultant burns to riders and corrosion on the bikes was not well received! If you have ridden at Butser Lime pits you will know the feeling, good climbs but very slippery when wet (no burns though, after a few crashes) by yours truly.

Now Sport 7 have given up the running of the WTS the TMX Ed' Anthony Sutton thinks it might be a good opportunity for a club or centre to run a "super trial" in place of the lost UK trial round. In the same issue there was news of a proposed Scottish trial on Shetland. A long sea ferry trip but what sounds like a real welcome on the islands. I wouldn't be too keen on the "briny" trip but it all sounded quite romantic!

Going back to the muddy event subject at San Diego, the Cambridge Matchless Brian Stonebridge trial often had some rather "mud bathing" sections and a lot of cross country round fields etc.. At the time we used to get a stiff stick to poke the mudguards out when they bunged up.

As anyone who has ridden there will tell you it was a long way round especially years ago, but who remembers the Barnet clubs trial at Factory Farm ? After a while the smell of "piggies" didn't overpower the shed where your bike was kept. Some riders used to remove their front mudguards when they became clogged but by the time you reached the finish you looked like Al Jolson! The "Stonebridge" is still one of the best trials in Southern England , so well done all who helped organise it!

By the way, it is nice to see Tom Grimshaw back in motocross action and also mastering his disappointment at Hawstone Park in 2018, good luck this year Tom. All for now from a TSM "codger". Andy Wood writes: Organisers please send some additional information about your events! There are potentially new competitors to attract if you are willing to provide some more information. Lack of entries and late entries are commonplace these days, help us to help you by promoting your events.

North Berks Ladies and Girls Championship Trial QQ By Bob Twigg The North Berks club staged round one of the National Ladies and Girls championship at Seymours arena on March the 10th. Three laps of twelve sections expertly laid out by Stu Robinson and his team made for an excellent championship event.

Donna Fox, now in her twentieth year of competition took a good win from Jess Brownon route one, with Alicia Robinson in a good fourth place behind Gas Gas mounted Louise Alford.

With eight different classes for all riders there were wins for Chloe Baker on a TRS in the 50/50 Ladies class, Sarah Bell in the Girls “A” class. Charlotte Kimber won the Intermediate class on route two. The Girls intermediate proved a very tough event with

the winner Libby Martinez losing over one hundred marks.

On the Girls “B” route two Kathryn Adshead had a narrow win over Daisy Parsons on her 125 Beta and Matilda Arbon took home the Donna Fox Girls “C” class trophy.

In the non championship class Jennifer Crabtree won the honours on her 200 Beta.

A good start to the Ladies and Girls series, I'm sure they are looking forward to the next Championship round at Low North Park, Scarborough on the first of June.

Waltham Chase Trials Club hosted the annual club awards ceremony along with the ACU Southern Centre Trials awards at Roddington Forge near Southampton with over 150 people in attendance. Awards were presented by Barry New the ACU Southern Centre

President assisted for the Alan Sansom Trophy by Alan’s wife Lesley and the John Wright Trophy by John’s daughter Adrienne. Several riders have had particularly successful years with Mark Owen picking up the intermediate club, intermediate awards in all the clubs open trials apart from two where he was second, the exception being the Keith

Marshall Classic where he needs to conquer his twinshock Montesa. Owen missed one round of the Southern Centre Championship finishing a close second to James Stay. Hugh Burrows completed the club championship Novice class with a perfect eight round first place record. Multiple awards also went to Neil Clarke, Shamus Doohan, Rory Bennett and David James. Of particular note for the youth riders the Commander Philimore Award went to Rory Bennett for best youth improver and David James received the 2018 Youth Ambassador for being a credit to the sport during the year.

The Doreen Earle award for best female competitor went to Karen Clarke this year.

A clear sunny morning greeted a classy entry of 50 plus riders for the 72th running of this prestigious Open to Centre event the "Harold Avery Cup" where in the past such great riders as John Avery Sammy Miller Don Smith Brian Devereux Bill Faulkner Pat Lamper and John Reynolds have all been triumphant.

The event staged at Howe Wood Oxon was also a round of the SMC Intermediate and Novice championships where four laps of

eleven sections were to be ridden.

First up at section Dan Cameron one was eventual premier winner Vinny Branch 300 Gasser a nice easy starter although some overnight drizzle had made the first rooty climb somewhat slick on the ensuing laps.

Kevin Nolan's long drive from the depths of the Southern Centre nearly paid off and was only four adrift in the Expert class with a loss of 38.

Kevin aced "Axford's Hill" first attempt but this was to be the only clean of the day a section starting low in the wood before snaking through a gully then a large fallen tree to jump next a slippy camber ducking under a medieval Yew before a very tough triple branch crossing.

Joe Snelling put an excellent performance in on the little Beta 125 and took best Youth B for his efforts riding the Expert route.

Ryan Tomkins was best on the 50/50 route with a loss of twenty nine, section 8 was no problem four clean sheets this hazard was a series of short sharp climbs with cambered flint out-crops.

Dean Devereux was out on his trusty 350 Bultaco this machine had what it took to conquer the steep flint banks and could be heard echoing

through Pine Forest from afar. Unfortunately the Bultaco had Sat-Nav failure on several occasions but I guess a forty year old plus original machine will be starting to loose it's memory as do we all.

Dev still managed a third spot in his class. The Yellow standard Clubmen route was as always competitive and this time it was Phil Ducker's turn to lift the Philip Howkins Cup for best adult performance with a loss of fifty two.

Section 6 was the toughest of the day and would bring all class winners to the fore with Phil no exception it started with a simple looking drop then a rooted climb around a big tree before lining up a four foot recently cut oak stump a two here was good by any standards.

Close on the heels of Ducker was local "Watlington Wobbler" Rowan Hill finding Montesa 260 power more than adequate on all sections unfortunately Rowan missed out by a single mark for best performance.

Milton Buzzard raider Mark Toms TRS 280 showed respect for the challenging sections and persistence paid off with a win in the Novice class on 62 marks lost.

Mark going particularly well at section 10 Chris "Firestarter" Hurworth was on the pencil a very slick bank up over a rotting log to start then a bottom gear drop over clay with a choice of lines up a lattice of steep roots then a third gear blast and turn to the welcome end cards.

The white sportsman route had varying marques of machine and various skill levels on parade today and those who chose to stick it out once the heavens opened were rewarded with an excellent day of challenging sections which can only mean one thing practice makes perfect.

Ian Homer Beta 250 is going through a bit of a purple patch at the moment with another overall win Adam Hughes Montesa 260 came home in second and also worthy of a mention is young Freddie Davidson Youth B whose little 125 Gas Gas was pulling high gears all day and a third spot was secured.

Riders opting for Course A (with roadwork) will leave the opening group for 1 lap at the away group - then return to the opening group for 2 laps there.

This will be repeated on day 2.

MATTERS ARISING FROM THE MINUTES a) Trials Clerk of the Course Seminar: No progress. Clubs will be advised when a date and venue have been arranged. 15 Licences need renewal for 2019; b) ACU Affiliations for 2019: To date, out of 39 Clubs, 28 have renewed to the Centre, 8 Clubs (reportedly) to the ACU, leaving 3 outstanding. Further reminders will be issued; c) ACU Insurance: Revised premiums as from 1st January 2019 have been issued to Clubs – an increase of 5%. Mr Wiseman complained that fees for Practice Permits have been increased by more than 15%; d) 2019 Centre Calendars not collected at the AGM are being posted to Clubs.

The need for future Centre Calendars was questioned.

ATTENDANCE The Book was circulated and returned with 16 signatures – 12 Officers (representing 17 posts) and 13 Delegates (representing 8 Clubs).

RIGHTS OF WAY COMMITTEE REPORT Mr Down reported that the Trail Riders Federation took Wiltshire County Council to the High Court regarding Wiltshire County Council imposing closures on Byways around Stonehenge and won the case. It was agreed to pay £1000 towards TRF’s costs (£18000) in bringing the case.

Ella dropped a dab over the rubble pile at section three plus two more at section eight twisting amongst the laurel bushes on the stream bank, whereas Harry had a dab at section one plus two

Clerk of the course Jim Brookman had introduced some new variations to the eight sections which were ridden six times in an anti clockwise direction around the disused 18

ornamental gardens utilising the banks, rockery and rubble piles.

There was a tie for the win on the beginners course between Kareen Capstick and Blake Myles who both rode the entire course feet up, Ella Cashman lost a solitary dab over the

more at section three. Ella’s younger brother Leon took fifth place on five, loosing four marks at section three plus a dab over the low lying branches at section four.

Seventeen year old Jack Taylor was victorious in Support Class managing to ride the entire course without penalty, he was followed home by Samuel Meeten who was riding one of the club’s new Oset machines loosing two marks and Hannah Moore. Sam lost a dab over the concrete rubble at section one and another up and down the ornamental rockery at section six, all of Hannah's losses

came over the rubble pile and large log at section three.

The next round of the club’s Chris Norman Novice & Beginner Shield will be held on Saturday 13th April at Kitsmead, Longcross with kickstart time at 2pm, new members and spectators are always welcome; for further details contact Eddie Renham 01784 452225.

Tom's Racing Diary

With all the build up and all roads leading to Hawkstone International it came & went like a blur. Catching up & seeing everyone after the long winter break was great especially seeing the ones on new Teams, bikes & kits. The track looked great & with Gary Ford & his crew putting in the hours to deliver a great International. To tell you the truth I didn’t have a great day as I had a little melt down mentally as I didn’t get settled into the track as I was still having flash backs from my big crash there last summer at the MX Nationals. The more I got frustrated the more mistakes I made. I was pleased to get away in one piece. My sister Katie had driven up to watch, so it was nice just driving back home with her chatting & listening to the tunes on her play list which made me feel better.

It was a quick turnaround early in the week as we headed out to Belgium for a few days riding & training with my HCR Yamaha team mate Sam Nunn. We done some testing with HCR Boss Roland at the track making some adjustments as we went along which was all good. We then travelled into Holland for another days riding which went really well and proved I was over the Hawkstone blues. Saturday night we rolled up at the Groesbeek International which is great fun as this track is set within the town area. The pits are part of the local football pitches and has a great atmosphere as the town comes out and watches. I raced the international class made up of a few European GP riders & good Dutch National Championship riders. The track was mint, and I put in a great lap to qualify 6th before getting a puncture. I normally run mousses, but we didn’t receive any until we left for our trip. I was in a good mood for the racing however I was brought down in turn two. I re-grouped & settled down and raced back to a great 16th place and not too far off a top 10. Race two started better, however starting lap 2 a rider crashed right in front of me and again I went down. I couldn’t believe my luck, so I remounted & started another charge. This only lasted until about half way distance when I had a big crash over a blind ski jump which had four big rollers the other side. I

was one of four rider’s quad jumping this section & made up good time in doing so however I just got my timing wrong when approaching a slow rider. I made a mistake in my calculation & to make it worse I done it right in front of Dad. The atmosphere wasn’t that great when I got back to the camper, Dad checked I was all okay & then he checked the bike, then he let rip. It was more to do with, the sport is dangerous enough without me pulling off a stupid move behind a slower rider. We had several hours of ‘Picture & No Sound’ until the silence broke & we hugged it out. Congratulations to Sam Nunn on winning the National class abroad on his 125cc against all those 250 & 450F bikes.

Again, re-grouping in the week and with a last-minute change we entered as a wild card Round 1 MX Nationals at Sherwood Fastest 40. I qualified 9th in MX2 class & finished 6th overall & tied on the same points as 5th place which I was happy about. I am still building blocks with the last few weeks highlighting what I need to be concentrating on.

Wessex Plant British Sidecar Trials Championship QQ By Richard Thomas Twenty seven crews set of at ‘Sethern’ Dunsfold at 10 am on Sunday morning in pouring rain and gusty winds it was possible the worst weather conditions.

It had been raining most of the night but there was still smiling faces about for this the opening round of this year’s championship. Conditions were going to be very testing for everyone, but the majority got through the first section over rubble in and out of gully and up a slippery bank. Perhaps it was the selection of various cup cakes awaiting them at the Ends card if they wished to partake.

Clubman winners Paul Fishlock / Sam Atherton, didn’t start well with an unwanted five on the score card when the motor stalled where most of their rivals cleaned it. On 24

the second section Jon Tuck / Mat Sparkes had a five when they got caught on the tree trunk, but reigning Champions Josh and Luke Golding got through with a clean ride.

Section four started with a drop into a gully out around some trees then back and forth across the gully. This32 took marks from everyone except Clubman pairing Pete Pesterfield / Deborah Smith, Inters Jack Corlett / Beth Thomas and Jamie Clarke / James Coker on the Sportsman route who all got a clean mark on their cards.

Further round the course at section nine down then up a steep climb took marks from all the competitors. The best scores here were from Karl Jarvis / Jana Grossman taking full advantage from being the second team away with a single dab and Jon Tuck/ Matt Sparkes with a superb ride for a 3 the same as Richard and Miles Gilham aboard their B40 on the Sportsman route.

At section fourteen across leafy bank Jon and Matt excelled here with a lovely clean. Clubman had an easier route which saw most clean along with cleans on the Inter route for Jack Corlett / Beth Thomas and Sean & Paul Cuckow. The next section a little further along the same bank ran up and down the leafy bank between the trees was another one to take marks from all, experts Jon / Matt being the best again with a 3.

Eighteen the last section of the first lap saw pacemakers Karl Jarvis / Jana Grossman with a 3 but Paul Fishlock / Sam Atherton with a superb dab now eased to the front. Best of the Experts here were Josh and Luke Golding with a single dab.

So at the end of the first lap it was Tuck / Sparkes 22, Goldings 26, and Nigel / Gracie Mae Scott 58, the Inters were Corlett / Thomas 40 and the Cuckow’s 55, In the Clubman it was Fishlock / Atherton 14, Jarvis / Grossman 18, Jake Pope / Harriet Shore 25 and Pesterfield / Smith 31 the Sportsman class was Gilham 41 and Clarke 53 so it was all to play for on the second lap.

Section 24 a twiddle between trees then down and uphill took marks from most but not Tuck / Sparkes with a clean ride and in the Clubman class Jake Pope / Harriet Shore, Inters, Jack Corlett / Beth Thomas and Sean / Paul Cuckow, and Clark / Coker and the Father & Son Gilhams in Sportsman were the only other cleans here. Section 27 a drop downhill across a ditch up and around trees back across the ditch finishing up the bank and out took a single mark from all the experts, with Corlett / Thomas the best of the Inters with a clean.

So onto the last section which saw 5’s from all the experts, the best clubman ride here was from Pope / Shore with a clean. At the final tot up of the scores it was Jon Tuck / Matt

Sparkes 54, Josh / Luke Golding 68. Inters, Jack Corlett / Beth Thomas 77, Sean / Paul Cuckow 106. With a superb second lap score of 9 saw Clubman Paul Fishlock / Sam Atherton finish on 23 with Karl Jarvis / Jana Grossman 47, Jake Pope / Harriet Shore 51. And the Non Championship Sportsman class was Richard / Miles Gilham 77.

A Bright Day for Barnet

A beautiful sunny day greeted the seventy one riders who entered the Barnet Meteor Group trial at Dews Farm. This year the trial was named the Fred Sparkes Trophy trial, after our late chairman Fred. Being a dry week the course had dried out considerably and even "tightening up" the sections still made it an easy event.

The expert winner Will Mc Bain had an outstanding ride staying "clean" all day throughout the forty sections.

Richard Vockins was the runner up losing fifteen marks, mostly on section eight, observed

by WMA stalwart Malcolm White, this section proving hard on the white route also.

David kept the Clarkson name to the forefront by winning the Pre 65 easy class after father Mick experienced bike problems.

Wayne Hutton was the only rider in the Pre65 50/50 hard route class which was a pity as being a "new " class we hoped it would be better supported.

Brian Tomkins made up the

trio of Oxford Ixion winners with a clubman class win, whilst Farnham Royals Darren Haines had an impressive win in the Intermediates, losing six marks.

The sportsman class was a close run affair with Brian Ayres just beating Martin Howlett on a tie break. The newly introduced twinshock class was well supported with a close contest between Dean Devereux on his "Geordie" mates 325 Bultaco and Steve Young on his sweet sounding TLR. Dean dropping two marks on the day, two less than the best clubman. Harry

Chatto had a much improved ride to annexe the "B" class win.

Many thanks to all who helped with the event, Kevin and Helen Peters set out such an enjoyable trial, and to all the observers who gave up their time for us. A very big thank you to Audrey Sparkes from me for all her help and knowledge and for allowing us to use Fred's name for the trial.

Winds of Change at Iwade

success with around 400-500 people attending the Ace café event and despite the 52mph winds we battled through to get there, the Sittingbourne speedway event we hosted was filled with wide eyes and smiles.

Women were enlightened and inspired to try new disciplines of riding which was ultimately our goal! The comradery and support that each woman showed each other was simply beautiful. Fun, laughter and new life long friendships, all born around a shared passion

of motorbikes… what more could we ask for hey!"

Gale force winds might have closed the nearby Sheppey Bridge, but they did not deter the hardy folk who picked their way past fallen trees and various debris for a day out at Iwade Speedway, at the Old Gun Site.

Among other things, the occasion was a final handover point for the UK leg of the Women Riders' World Relay (WRWR). This was organised recently to draw attention to

QQ By Alan Turner Firstly a few words from Hayley Bell - Founder - Women Riders World Relay (WRWR): "Well, there’s not many words in the English dictionary that can describe the level of excitement that buzzed around every single rider along the UK and Irish legs.

We battled below zero temperatures, snow, rain, ice, sleet, thick fog, gale force winds and were blessed with the occasional spot of sun! I think everybody watching and riding the relay would agree with me in saying we really showed what women riders CAN do.

Girls just wanna have fun! the number of females who have taken up motorcycling and make the point that they now represent a significant proportion of road licence holders, as well as those who choose to compete on two, or three, wheels.

The WRWR has received a welcome amount of support from the motor cycle industry, which all helps the wake-up call. As regular TSM readers will be aware, Iwade Speedway is no stranger to hosting events specifically for the ladies and has recently expanded its activities to include some basic trials riding. It is all proving very popular.

Some days before, the Relay had started off from John O'Groats. The baton is entrusted to a rider (the Guardian) who has undertaken to get it to the next destination and hand it on for another section of its journey. Over the days, the baton transferred down through Scotland, across to Ireland, back to Wales, around England and, the previous day, had been handed over at the well-known Ace CafĂŠ on the

Although the next leg was reasonably short, the weather did not make it the most pleasant of rides to Iwade.

While there, it was handed to junior speedway rider Taya Thirtle, who made a number of laps of the smaller training track before the next Guardian took it on across the Channel and into France. The WRWR web site allows viewers to track the baton's progress and within a couple of days it was well on its way through the continent and down to Iberia.

So far, its route has been plotted to offer comprehensive coverage in Europe and the Far East before it moves across the Atlantic later in the year. Indeed, some of the ambassadors, responsible for organising riders in their home countries, were also present to watch proceedings at Iwade.

In such a short space of time, it is quite remarkable how the Relay has gained momentum.

Bringing wayward steeds under control at the start of another pit bike heat be so much of a surprise.

While some of the ladies tried balancing a trials bike, before taking turns to have a ride under power, the small track became the battle-ground for the finals of the Pit Bike World Championships. A rather tongue in cheek title, but it has proved to be a fine way of enabling track racing folk to get their off-season adrenaline fix. The entry included many names familiar to those who follow track racing around the south east's grass and speedway circuits. For those not aware of this form of motorcycling, pit bikes are dimensionally small with single-cylinder four stroke engines of up to 140cc that deliver a surprising amount of punch. The geometry can make the handling lively but it provided entertainment galore around the smaller Iwade training track. The racing is usually on the intense side of close. The bikes are cheap to buy and run and competitions for them have sprung up all 36

over the world. One rider had bought his bike days previously.

Finding out that Iwade entry fees are very reasonable, he decided he would have a go.

He had already notched up two wins and was pleased with his purchase as he had paid just ÂŁ200 for the bike!

In spite of the vagaries of the weather, this year's series had managed four rounds so far, taking place on the proposed dates. The 10 March meeting was the scheduled finale, attracting no less than 44 riders.

The series reputation has also made it popular with spectators so, with the two concurrent events, the Old Gun Site was fairly crammed with visitors.

There were eight finals, with riders drawn from the results of 36 heats. After two sessions of tight racing the finals clearly established Edward Kennett as the winner, with 46 points, Tom Brennan second (44) and Charley Powell (37) third.

However, the main focus of the day was on the overall

championship, which threw up an interesting conclusion.

The cumulative scores come from the best four of the five rounds. Tom Brennan had 165 points for third place, but Edward Kennett and Charley Powell tied, both having 166 points. Charley seemed determined to compete for top honours, but Edward declined, noting his total came from contesting only four rounds, while Charley had done all five, so Edward was happy for Charley to take the championship. On such a day, it seemed fitting that Lydia Penfold's efforts amongst the boys did not go un-noticed and she was awarded a (rather modest) cup.

The winds were calming down by then. The exceptional weather had caused some adjustments to the day's programme, but its main aims had been achieved and there were a lot of happy boys and girls.Â

Swale Council Planning Committee made the decision on Thursday March 7th to deny Speedway racing to be moved to Saturday evenings at Central Park. This means that for the time being at least, race night will remain on a Monday with the regular start time be 6:30pm. However, the two opening meetings on the two Bank Holidays will start at 4:00pm.

Kent Speedway are seeking a couple of volunteers to help with the erection of the fence and other pre-meeting preparation. Enduro Checkpoint - Illegal Riding Zero Tolerance We have been made aware of a number of illegal riders utilising Forestry Commission land in particular at Warren Heath/Yateley Heath.

Illegal activity on Forestry Commission land is a criminal offence and the ACU with the Forestry Commission are taking a zero-tolerance approach. Activity such as this puts all legitimate events at risk and as some of our best venues in the South, this is completely unacceptable.

If you are caught illegally riding on Forestry Commission Land, your bike WILL be impounded under Section 56 by the Forestry Commission and Police. You WILL be banned from ACU competition events.

From the Sunny Side of the Solent Johnny Brittain We are sorry to record the death of John V "Johnny "Brittain, on 9th March at the age of 87. Originally riding for DMW and then James Motorcycles, Brittain beat the three James works riders in his first ISDT trial in the 125 class. He moved to Royal Enfield riding the Bullet 350cc (including his particular favourite HNP 331).

1950 was his first full year riding the Bullet, at the very young age of 18, when he won a Gold Medal in the ISDT held that year in Wales, as well as his first gold award in the Scottish Six Days Trial, a 900 mile endurance competition.

Overall, Brittain won more than 50 Trade Sponsored championship events. The wins included the Scottish and British Experts Trials, which he won twice. In 1956 he won the ACU Star and was Runner Up or third in several other competitions. Johnny competed in the ISDT for 15 consecutive years, winning 13 Gold Medals.

He was a member of the last British team to win the event in Czechoslovakia in 1950.

He also followed his father Vic's success at the British Experts Trial, winning after completing two 30 mile laps of the course in Stroud, Gloucs, in blizzard confditions.

2019 FIM MX World Championship Matterley Basin 23rd/24th March The International MX Rounds at this classic Southern Centre venue near Winchester have become firm favourites and 40

attract a large audience year on year. For this year the main events were the MX1 (MX GP) and MX 2 Rounds, the first in Europe and the second overall following the first round in Argentina a couple of weeks ago. Sadly, the present MX GP Champion Jeffrey Herlings was sidelined recovering from a broken foot incurred in training, and MX 2 Champion Jorge Prado was also a non starter, recovering from a shoulder injury.

Nevertheless there was a stong entry in each class, and as always the crowd was keen to support the British contingent, and if possible to achieve a podium place - no mean feat if it could be achieved. In addition to MX1 and MX2, there were championship rounds for EMX2t and EMX 250, won respectively by Dylan Farrandi and Marvin Musquin.

After two keenly contested legs in MX2 the overall winner was Denmark's Thomas Kjer Olsen, who won both legs.

Neither leg was a pushover, and the podium places were all keenly contested. Britain's quest for a podium was narrowly missed when Ben Watson achieved a fourth place finish in Leg 1, and a fifth in Leg 2.

In MX GP Antonio Cairoli was the overall winner, with victory in leg 1 after leader Tim Gajer, from Slovenia achieved what looked to me to be the crash of the day after hooking up in a deep rut, and being thrown off his machine at some speed.

He was able to finish in third

place in Leg 1 after remounting, having some difficulty with a broken visor and damage to the front end of his machine.

In Leg 2 Gajer again went into an early lead, but was gradually overhauled by Cairoli until at the end it was a close finish, with Gajer gaining a narrow victory, but Carroli I think gaining the most psychological points.

The Isle of Wight Motorcycle Club held its Annual Award presentations in February at the Newclose County Cricket Ground. Thanks to Annie Milton for organising another successful evening including a three course meal followed by some top sound – a fitting way to help celebrate the riders achievements throughout 2018. The Club would also like to thank Nikki Price along with all the Staff at the Pavilion Bar and Restaurant for their excellent service.

The main presentations were made by Wayne Brodie, Vice President of the Club. Dave Rose, a close friend of the very sadly missed Nigel Crouch,kindly agreed to present two very special awards in respect of the Nigel Mason Crouch Memorial Trial, held in August, following

Nigel’s very sad passing in January 2018. The NMC Memorial trial will become an annual event, in remembrance of such an inspirational stalwart of the Club.

The Club took this opportunity to announce that its adopted charity for 2019 will be ‘Home Start, IOW’ who do some fantastic work, helping support vulnerable families, with young children.

We kicked off the fundraising by inviting members to make donations, in lieu of a raffle.

We are pleased to say that an amazing £221.42 was collected on the night. There will be more fundraising initiatives throughout the year before we can announce a final total and present those much needed funds, to such a worthy cause.

Sidecar and Solo First at the TT

The Northamptonshire racer celebrated International Women’s Day by securing acceptance to race the sidecar at this year’s TT with Julie Canipa as her new passenger, who last year was awarded the Susan Jenness Trophy by the TT Supporters’ Club for her fantastic efforts in the event.

The pair will form a formidable duo as an allfemale team. Costello made her sidecar road racing debut at the Southern 100 road races on the Isle of Man last year while Canipa started her TT career alongside Doug Chandler in 2015 and teamed up with Greg Lambert in 2017 to claim her best IoM finish of eighth.

Despite being a late starter to the sport, Julie Canipa, 50, of Port Soderick on the Isle of Man, is the fastest female passenger around the twisty Oliver’s Mount circuit and has enjoyed podium success at the Pre-TT Classic as well as racing competitively in New Zealand.

Maria said: "I’m so excited

about getting the opportunity to compete on my sidecar at the TT, this would make me the first woman to race both a sidecar and solo at the TT races and to do it as an all-female team would make it even more special."

"I’m so delighted to have Julie as my passenger. She is a massive boost to my sidecar racing and especially to my TT as she’s a terrific passenger and she also has four years of experience there."

"Julie and I feel like such a great match and I feel very lucky to have her onboard.

We have the same approach and we believe in each other’s ability. Hopefully, that will go a long way towards making our goals a reality and we're really looking forward to getting some testing and races under our belts in the coming months.”

Maria, who recently secured a deal to ride a Paton Supertwin for Mark Coverdale this year, goes into the season with a new mechanic, Chris Purdie, who will work alongside existing spanner man Matt Williams and new team members from Ireland.

"I’ve got continued support from many of my existing sponsors, which means the world, and some new sponsors to announce in the very near future,” added Costello, whose achievements on the Isle of Man include being a former female lap record holder on the TT course, being the first woman to take the podium in a race at the Manx Grand Prix & a Classic TT podium finisher.

It is with regret, that confirmation has been received that Mr Grewal recently passed away. Beera who embraced the motorcycle club life of the 1970’s, was of Asian heritage and became an active competitor involved in grass track racing.

The programmes of the era I hold indicate that Beera, who lived in the Edgeware area, raced from about 1966 to 1970, generally at events in the “home counties” Herts, Bucks Middx and Beds. He was a member of the South Harrow and St Albans

passenger in her own right.

The standard of racing was also high with national standard riders supporting these events.

So to achieve placings in semi finals and occasional podium place in a final as Beera did, was quite an achievement. He also enjoyed competing at the St Albans grass sprint which was run for a number of years.

STRAIGHT TALKING Following the National Sprint Association’s well attended Annual General Meeting the room at The Strawberry Bank Hotel, Meridan was quickly transformed into a magical glitz and glamour room for the club’s annual awards presentation night hosted by multi winning ACU National Sprint Champion Alan Tinnion; a fitting tribute to round off the club’s 60th anniversary season.

In fact both Alan and Northern Section Chairperson Susan McNeil should be congratulated for laying on such a successful evening.

However, the master stroke for the evening was the presentations guest of honour, no less that Gina Campbell – Women’s World Water Speed Record Holder and daughter of former NSA President Donald Campbell who, along with her partner made the 11,000 mile trip from New Zealand to be at the presentations.

Gina very graciously commented after presenting the awards, ‘I wouldn’t have missed it for the world’.

Also making the journey, but not so far, was northern sprint star Sheelagh Neal. Along with her father Ozzie and brother Pat, this amazing family has ridden some fantastic bikes to numerous records at venues all 50

over the country since the early days of sprinting in the fifties and sixties. And it’s great to see Sheelagh still competing at sprints at Santa Pod, East Kirkby and the Festival at Mallory Park with her solo and sidecar outfits. Indeed it was an honour to see Sheelagh in her refinery rather than her usual attire of racing leathers.

Well done to all of the NSA’s Northern and Southern Champions, Elgar Shield class winners and our the club’s Special Award winners to wrap u a very successful and rewarding 60th year.

Isle of Wight Speedway - Press & Practice Day Arrangements

The speedway season is only a couple of weeks away and Island fans will be able to catch an early sight of the 2019 Wightlink Warriors and Wightlink Wizards teams when the riders gather at the Smallbrook Stadium in Ryde on Thursday 4th April for their Press and Practice Day. This is an open event with free admission and a busy day starts at 10.00 when local media will have exclusive time and access to the Wightlink Warriors and Wightlink Wizards squads for photographs and interviews. Warriors co-promoters Barry Bishop and Martin Widman will also be available as will team manager Jackie Vatcher and members of the rider’s support teams. On completion of the media session, supporters will be welcome to meet the riders and officials and take photos.

On track practice is expected to start around 11.00 with the Warriors on first, followed by the Wizards. On track action is expected to end around 15.00. The Retreat snack bar will be open for refreshments. Around 16.30 both squads will attend briefing sessions being given by the promoters and team managers before heading off for a private meal at a local venue. The day will be

rounded off with a pre-season ‘Meet The Team’ social event in The Premier Lounge at Smallbrook Stadium starting at 19.00 hosted by Rob Dyer.

Everyone is welcome to attend. There will be no admission charge and tickets will not be required.

Co-promoter Barry Bishop said: "Well here we are on the eve of our fourth season in charge and I’m as excited now as I was when we launched this venture in 2016. Whilst I would have like to have held Press & Practice at the weekend, stadium availability has gone against us this time and we have opted to use a Thursday in daylight for maximum media exposure. I know that some fans will not be able to make the on track action due to work or school commitments, however we are having an evening social so people can meet both teams and have a chat with them and by way of compensation for missing the on track action, the evening event will be free and there will be some food too".

Warriors first official fixture will be an individual event on Thursday 11th April (19.00 start) with the fourth staging of the Vince Mapley Memorial Trophy. All seven Warriors will be in action alongside five carefully selected visitors who have a proven record at the Smallbrook track.

North East London MCC Feet - Up - For Charity Event

On the 19th of May the North East London Motor Cycle Club are running their annual charity trial which features both a road and offroad trial.

This unique event will have a 35 mile route for the road trial that will include 36 sections.

After the road Riders for the all offroad event 52

will cover four laps of 10 sections all based at Plashes Farm. The road trial has classes for modern, twin-shock and Pre 65 while the offroad event has an additional class for youth riders.

John Lee and Sons have generously donated £50 vouchers for the Best Expert, Best Intermediate and Best Clubman in the road trial.
