FROM THE EDITOR'S CHAIR n By Bob Twigg , Andy Wood and John Bramall
A Happy New Year to everyone who reads these exciting missives! Please let's all have a great time in 2019, with no injuries or breakdowns. On the subject of the price increase, the cost of postage has steadily risen in the past few years, I mentioned in 2018 that the cost of receiving TSM was the same as having a pint of beer now and then! The cost of travelling to our town is more than the cost of the mag' if we go there every day. Wouldn't it be nice if like in the old days, (here we go again) clubs put the cost into their club membership fee. As an old codger of course I can blame the onset of mobiles and PC's! Another wouldn't it be nice is if more youngsters (those under sixty) would volunteer as secretary of the meeting. At all events, not just trials, it can be frustrating to stand behind a rickety table on a Winters morn ' and get riders to sign on, preferably readable names, class, e-mail or home address details. Sometimes I need an Egyptologist to decipher the entry forms.(I blame the teachers and parents)! Being a Clerk of the Course is an interesting job, very responsible and sometimes worrying at speed events, usually OK at trials, sometimes you might have to take some stick about marking and section layout. But, don't be put off, you will be helping the sport out which I know you love. I know we will all wish Judith Ayres a happy "retirement" from her work with the centre. She has suffered many horrid long journeys to Nash Mills and elsewhere on centre affairs, all the best and many thanks. Sounds like I have started the year with a moan, sorry, I know you will enjoy the best sport in the World in 2019. All the best, Bob Twigg. Firstly let me say thank you to all those who have renewed subscriptions for the year. The value of this publication is not what it costs to produce and distribute but in what it contains. We have a small army of contributors who share their thoughts and time, to bring you news and reports of events: this is just part of the fellowship which our pastime enjoys, certainly recognised and appreciated by people of all ages I have spoken to in recent times. It is the beginning of another year, a time of looking forward to what is in store. Looking forward is something we would like to see more of in these pages. Clubs dutifully send in regulations of their events for publication, which in some senses can also be considered an advertisement. In these times I feel, there is a good case for say that more is needed to promote an event. Continued overleaf 3

FROM THE EDITOR’S CHAIR (Continued)
It is well worthwhile writing a few lines to describe the nature of the course, where it is, the classes it is open to, parking arrangements, any additional facilities and perhaps some information about the event’s history or what ever you deem to be of interest. Give it a go, dare I say it could
be your New Year’s Resolution! There is also a good case to be made for carrying news of social events as well. Motorcycling is not just the riding of machines, it is and just as importantly, about the people involved and news covering this area is just as welcome in these pages. Have you anything
to share that you would like to extend to a wider audience? I will stop there, have I given you all something to think about? Go on, surprise us all, and most importantly yourself, look forward to a happy, fulfilling and interesting New Year.
Down in the Southern Centre we are already looking forward to the new season, as for myself I am just as enthusiastic as ever I was. With bikes in going order it's just a matter of waiting for Spring to come round. In modern times there are plenty of events to go to, but alas Centre Speed events seem to become ever scarcer, and publicity and promotion is often a bit scarce too. Overall I find I spread a bit wider for Speedway and Road Racing, although I also get to as many local events as possible, such as Winchester MX and local
grass track although I have a special love for Speedway on the Isle of Wight, it takes about 2 hours to get there for the 12 mile journey on Ferries. Club life does not seem to be as vibrant as once it was, and there are certainly not as many volunteers nowadays. On the other hand, if a project catches the imagination of enthusiasts then much more becomes possible. I have many happy memories of helping to erect grass track, moto cross etc, and so much comradeship too, knocks the world of Facebook friends into a cocked
hat. Looking too at 2019 events already announced there are some terrific days out in prospect, and no house decorating to do at all. We in TSM are always grateful for contributions received, I think overall we get some really good articles which reflects our sport in a good light, and long may if continue in the world of traditional journalism.
Best wishes, Andy Wood
With all good wishes for the New Year, John Bramall.
