FROM THE EDITOR'S CHAIR n By Bob Twigg
Trials in the winter, grass track and "scrambles" in the summer! That was the format when us "old codgers" started our motorcycle "careers". Now trials carry on throughout the Summer and the racers season slows down (that sounds daft). We used to enjoy helping out at grass tracks and scrambles in the summer. Long before everyone on the organising side had to have a licence or a piece of paper saying they were capable of doing it. Of course the "legal eagles" have forced a lot on us, some of it for our protection. Attitudes today about blaming someone else when things go wrong seem to be on the increase. I heard some while ago of a chap who bought a motocross bike and all the riding gear to go with it, then first time out at a practice track fell off and tried to sue the owners claiming that they should not have let him do it . Doh‌.. Not saying like most of us do, "oh dear what a foolish person I am ". I suppose that it takes all sorts of people to make up this wonderful world! Some years ago I remember seeing in MCN (or was it Motor Cycling) a series of jokes about our sport. A big posh looking chap in tweeds and plus fours looking at a scrambles bike, obviously the boss, and saying "this is the new road racer is it"? The bike had knobbly tyres and was dripping with mud, it was about the time of the terminal decline of the British motorbike industry. The chaps in the competition departments did their stuff and were keen to make things a success, the drawback was at the top with little investment and bosses that were half hearted and ignorant of what the motorbike people wanted. Who remembers Dick Mann winning at Daytona on a BSA? The factory should have immediately made Dick Mann replicas, I`m sure they would have sold well worldwide. Investment in Japan for the bike makers came from many sources and though at first there were comments about how long they would last etc.. They swamped the world with superb machines. Having said all that I appreciate the work done by the pre 65 trials folk who update the British bikes and the "racers" on and off road who improve and impress with their British bikes. Oh dear, more of my "all our yesterdays "! I am at the moment reading the autobiography of Guy Martin, if you see it get it, it is a fantastic read and great for motorcycling. Have a lovely Christmas and a very Happy New Year, I hope to see more contributors and readers in 2019!Â
