OCTOBER 2018
FROM THE EDITOR'S CHAIR n By Bob Twigg
A mention on "social media" was made of a Laverda. I know they made fantastic road bikes years ago but have you ever seen a trials bike? A cheerful Sicilian rider in the centre rode one at the West Middlesex trial the other Sunday. It has an interesting adjustable headstock to suit trials, trail and speed events which alters the fork trail. A big engine, 250 I think, a bit noisy but great to see it out, let's hope it gets an outing again soon. Talking of interesting machines, how many of you have ridden a Norton rotary? I had that honour a few years ago and found it amazing. The handling was superb, sometimes I would go round a bend and think‌ I could have gone faster. Dangerous thinking perhaps! Going slow meant keeping it in a high gear, something like a two stroke as it seemed lumpy, but boy did they go! Quite heavy on fuel too. though they were improved apparently when they became water cooled, not that I ever rode a later one. They were so smooth that when standing the legendary coin vertically balanced on the fuel tank would not fall over (luckily I didn't either)! The final drive which was fully enclosed never needed adjusting, or so it seemed. Talking of Nortons we also did a lot of work on the old Commandos , one chap in the workshop had one kick back when he was starting it and it threw him up in the air, luckily he was holding the handlebars tightly but he did a marvellous handstand.
PUBLISHED ON THE 1ST OF EACH MONTH
I did hear years ago of a mechanic kicking over a Panther (no dear, not the furry kind) and in the kick back his toe touched his knee, painful! Looking through my collection of South Midland Reviews (again) I found a rather nasty letter I sent regarding the difficulty of two centre clubs trials. It was around the time when clubs began to adopt having two routes through the hazards. So, sorry Tony and Gordon, I was a bit greener and selfish then.
All material for TSM should reach the editor by the tenth day of the month preceding publication.
Better today, we now have three or even four routes to choose from. I enjoy reading John Bramall's articles about his trips on his 125 Yamaha, quite a feat with todays traffic and piggy drivers to put up with, well done John.
VOL. 18 ISSUE 10
Now, once again we are trying to get more articles about motorcycling. Not just reports of events, readers letters are good, comments on the mag', anything that folk will enjoy reading please do not hide your light under a bushel!Â

Kent Kings Speedway Press Release
QQ By Neil Emmott Photo by Elizabeth Leslie September brought a mixed bag of fortunes for the Kent SLYDE Kings. It started with a home loss to Mildenhall with the score line showing 40-50. This was only the Kings’ second home defeat so far this season, the other again being to the allconquering Mildenhall back in May to a score line of 44-45. This early September defeat Date
Paul Hurry suffered a horrifying crash while competing in what was probably going to have been the best race seen at Central Park in 2018 had it reached its conclusion. Hurry was swapping places with the hard-charging teenager Henry Atkins on almost every corner, but on lap three Hurry lost control falling heavily on his own. The crash left Hurry with a broken wrist, dislocated knee and broken ribs. This left the Kings’ Team Manager Chris Hunt searching for a rider capable of taking them one-step-beyond in the search of silverware. The final home meeting of the month saw the Kings face-off against bitter rivals Eastbourne in the first leg of the Knockout Cup semi-final. Following 45 -45 draw Central Park, this meant that the deciding second leg at Arlington on Saturday 29th, left the qualifiers for the final undecided as TSM went to Anders Rowe press.
