FROM THE EDITOR'S CHAIR n By Bob Twigg

There seems to be a resurgence of interest both locally and Nationally in twinshock trials Bikes. Fantics, Betas, Hondas etc.. seem to be the favoured mounts, with much expense aimed at them. I do know that if you buy one and want it to perform well in todays events you may incur considerable costs by buying different fork yolks, footrests and so on. A friend of mine has spent well into four figures making his Honda TLR more competitive. Don’t be put off though, as like Pre 65 bikes they won't lose money as fast as modern machines. By the way, in 2019 the Meteor Group will be running a twinshock championship for the first time, so "rev" yourself up for that and enter as many events as you can this year to give the group an idea of how many riders they can expect to enter the new championship. So, dig out those twinshockers and let's see them! Great reports from Wycombe, Oxford Ixion and Roy Phypers NEL charity road trial in TSM. Well done, I hope you can keep them going to make our "mag" more interesting. On the subject of Roy's trial it seems the landowner at Hamels Park was reluctant to let them use it this year for some reason. This is a pity as I know for a fact that NEL have donated thousands of pounds to cancer charities over the years they have run there. I hope that it will be sorted for 2019 as it is an ideal starting area for the road trial and the off road event. Going back to clubs submitting their reports of their trials to TSM, please don't be afraid to send them to us, it doesn't matter what your grammar is like we can always amend it if needed. At the Luton club's motocross meeting in June it was nice to see some old and "not so old" riders and friends there. Dave and Steve Grimshaw riding well in the over 50's (or was it 60's) only joking lads. Sad to see that TSM columnist Tom Grimshaw has a shoulder injury, let's hope he recovers quickly and resumes his sparkling MX career. Many thanks Tom for marshalling on the day, one handed! The winner of the Steve Barnwell trophy was evergreen Simon Wyse, great to see one of the aces of the old British four stroke championship from the 80's still riding well, how does he get such good starts? The club spent many hours at the venue cutting grass and improving the course , they were there on Saturday night until 9pm. Well done all, it was a great day out, sunny too! Send in anything you think we should know about, all the best, the TSM team. Contributions in this issue: Alan Critcher, Richard Holt, Alan Turner, Neil Emmott, Chris Fletcher, John Sapsard, Mick Auger, John Eckhart, Bob Brown, Ken O'Brien, Fraser Law, John Bramall, Nigel Cooper Would you like to contribute? Barham MC - Safety and First Aid at Barham Sporting Events QQ By Richard Holt

You may have read my notes on First Aid Training in last months TSM. In case you missed it, it concerned our thoughts on first aid and safety following the heart attack suffered by one of our members while competing at another club’s trial. Fortunately, aid reached him in time and he is now recuperating and will make a full recovery. In light of this, and following much discussion with our club members, our committee have decided to take the following actions:•  Purchase a defibrillator which will be present at all Barham events. •  Purchase a set of 12 walkietalkies, again to be used at our events. The reason for 12 handsets is that most of our

trials consist of ten sections, so one handset for each observer, one for the clerk of the course, and one for the secretary of the meeting. This should enable swift communication in the event of any accidents or other incidents where assistance is required.

•  Organise a bespoke first aid training course for six or more club members. These will be members who regularly attend our events, and will be designed to take account of off road motorcycling activity, and the type of terrain involved. It is hoped to have all of the above in place in time for the next Barham MCC EKTC event later in the year. This is obviously a significant financial outlay, but we see it as an investment in the

safety and wellbeing of competitors, officials and spectators at our events. Equally obviously, this will only at present apply to Barham organised events (although I believe that Sidcup club have already made similar provisions), and those attending them. We very much hope though that other clubs will be able to consider similar actions. We sincerely hope that the defibrillator will never need to be used – a bit like insurance, you know you need to have it but hope never to have to make a claim! If anyone would like to have a chat about what we are doing, or find details of costs etc, please don’t hesitate to contact me or any Barham committee member. 5
