TE LLS A S TO RY A N D, T H E 4C S A R E ON LY PA RT OF T H AT S TORY. The standard 4Cs – carat weight, color, clarity and cut – make up the four traits that determine a diamond’s rarity.

Carat weight is what the diamond weighs if it were put on a scale. Total Carat Weight represents the weight of diamonds in a piece of jewelry, meaning if you were to remove all of the diamonds from the jewelry and place them on a scale, this would reveal the total carat weight.

Carat weight is commonly misused to indicate the size of a diamond, but it is actually only the weight of the diamond.

Color measures how many shades away from “perfectly 10

white” a diamond is. Some of these colors – such as red or blue – add to the rarity of the diamond. Others that are more common – such as light yellow, brown or grey – are not as rare and therefore typically less valuable. Color begins at a grade of “D” and goes alphabetically to “Z”, and then it is paired with a color chart describing the specific color and its saturation in the diamond. The closer to “D” that a diamond is and the more saturated with color a diamond is, the more rare it is.

Cut refers to both the shape of a diamond (i.e. round, princess, pear, oval, marquise, cushion, emerald, ascher, etc.), as well as the cut quality of a diamond (how well the facets, or cuts, are placed on the diamond to produce sparkle, symmetry or brilliance). The more difficult a cut is – in order to achieve a balance between brilliance, fire and scintillation – the more rare it is.

While all of these Cs describe a diamond in terms of rarity, this does not tell the whole story of a diamond. For that, you must see it for yourself. A diamond, not unlike a snowflake, is truly unique, and when you find the one that catches your eye, you’ll know it. Because the most valuable diamond, the most beautiful diamond, the most precious diamond…is the one you are in love with.

Clarity refers to the level of magnification that is required to see the inclusion (birthmark) in a diamond.

These levels range from Included, in which you can see the inclusion(s) easily with your naked eye, to Flawless, in which the diamond doesn’t have any inclusion, even under 10x power magnification. The fewer inclusions a diamond has, the more rare it is.

Why make gold with only 10, 14 or 18 parts gold (10kt, 14kt or 18kt)? There are two reasons for this. The first is that the gold itself is a very soft metal and needs to be alloyed (mixed) with other metals to make it stronger and harder. The second is that gold is expensive, and to make this precious, elegant metal affordable for any budget, it is diluted.

Are all 14 karats the same? No, because 14karat means that only 14 out of 24 parts are gold out of the alloyed metals. So, what does that mean for the other 10 parts?

The other 10 parts could consist of materials such as nickel, palladium or platinum.

Should it matter what your gold is mixed with? Yes, factors include allergies, durability and price which could determine the best type for you. The gold could be mixed with rare metals such as platinum or palladium which will be more expensive than nickel, but the durability will increase and cause the jewelry to last longer and be hypoallergenic.

Have some old jewelry you want made into something new? Not only can we design a custom piece from the ground up, we can turn your old jewelry into something new. Our sales associates will take a look at what you have and take measurements of all your stones while you browse through the stores and get some ideas of what you want it made into.

Don’t have time to stop in the store? Email pictures of your jewelry you want to use along with a basic design of what you are looking for and we will be able to give you an approximate price quote and a few good ideas of what you could make out of it.

Step 1: Sketch Our designer will help you create your unique jewelry to meet your specifications, or even help you fine tune a design that doesn’t seem quite right for what you want.

After we have the idea for your custom piece, the first step is to sketch it out on paper so you can see the main points of what your piece of jewelry will look like.

When designing your piece, we are always price conscious so you can get what you want within your budget.

Step 2: Computer-Aided Design (CAD) Once we have sketched out your idea to your liking, we make a CAD of your piece of jewelry that allows you to see your creation from every angle to make sure that it’s perfect and meets your specifications.

We also have our own 3D printers and wax carvers to allow you to try on the jewelry and make sure size and fit are perfect.

Step 3: Create Your Unique Masterpiece Our designers take the CAD drawing and turn your design into a reality.

Once the design is finished, our jewelers cast the precious metal and hand-set all of the stones into your unique design, and your finished piece is ready for pick-up.
