Mr Robert Porritt Facade Treatment of the area in front of the homes principal entrance.

Originally it was proposed to have a specimen tree in front of the house however this has been changed to a Corten steel sphere sculpture. Although the intention is that the occupant’s cars would predominantly be parked in the basement parking garage guests would tend to arrive to the home’s principal entrance. Therefore, rather than having a sea of hard standing or an awkward hammer head arrangement it is proposed to have a circular turning area with informal boarders as can be seen from the above and following images, the bonded gravel surface melts into the native tall grasses.

The home has been designed for the display of sculpture in several areas such as Dawn by Georg Kolbe at the end of the vista from the bridge link to the pavilion structure. The photographs on this page and the artists impressions are intended to show the general character and nature of the Corten steel sphere sculpture. However, the sculpture that would form the centrepiece of the arrival area would be commissioned as a one-off or limited-edition piece.

A sensitive and naturalistic character is created using tall grasses and wild meadow mix so that the building has a mature feeling in the landscape from the very beginning. Pedestrian routes cross and meander through the area and wider site. They afford the observer views of, around and through the building that change with time of day and season. The building itself as a piece of sculpture within the wider landscape with the rock garden being legible as the “star of the show” from many different vantage points.

The blades create amazing richness of depth and shadow adding to the overall artistic quality of the building and the feeling of it as a home with a soul as tones and textures come to the fore or recede as seasons change.

1. Smooth - Full sheets - Used on the main accommodation block that faces the entrance turning area in front of the principal entrance

3. Contained blades - 150mm deep Equitone blades that are contained within a frame - Used on the music pavilion

2. Divided blades - 150mm deep Equitone blades that are not contained within a frame used as part of the facade with deep set smooth Equitone bands. - Used on the cinema room facade next to the brick rotunda

4. Continuous blades - Combination of smooth full sheets with 150mm deep Equitone blades that are not contained within a frame - Used on west elevation

There are 4 different ways that Equitone is used to create different facade treatments:

The distance between the blades ranges from 100 to 500mm in order to create a less structured rhythm to the facades.

When considering the windows for Lakeside house we were looking for a very specific aesthetic with deep set windows with a minimal amount of window frame visible. Internorm KF 520 combines innovative design with technical know-how. The window sash is not visible at all from the outside due to the glass being bonded to an internal high quality uPVC frame. Externally the uPVC is clad with aluminium. The frame and window sills will be concealed from view behind the Equitone facade cladding. The sash also contains the revolutionary locking I-tec Secure which renders levering of the window almost impossible - unrivalled. Integrated flaps press on all sides into the frame profile when locking, ensuring maximum security protection.

Natural light - The window design offers more light. Up to 10% more daylight – better for health and wellbeing – a significant advantage especially in the dark winter months.

• Combination of strength and durability with minimal thickness, resulting in the creation of fine, elegant solutions for the outdoor space.

Corten—or weathering steel—is typically used for landscaping and outdoor construction. It is made with alloys that cause its surface to develop a self-protecting rust when exposed to weather. The insulating patina resists corrosion, requires no painting or weather-proofing, and doesn’t compromise structural strength.

Due to its warm hue of burnt-orange tones that blend well with greenery and vegetation we propose to use Corten steel for the main roofs of the proposed dwelling and the brise soleil that wraps down the north east facade.

Architects and designers especially appreciate the material due to the following assets it provides:

• Natural, warm, and specific hues, which easily blend into the overall landscape and add to the identity of a unified site.

• Generally available in sheet and plate form, facilitating the process of construction.

The circular form of the brick entrance rotunda is in reference to the roundels of Oast houses, the most quintessential Kentish vernacular architectural form. As a subtle recognition of the sites connection to Swaylands, we have incorporate the same brick tone into the entrance rotunda. A de-constructed polychromatic brickwork scheme is incorporated via a modern pixelated design projecting forward of the main face of brickwork. Wrapping around and down the rotunda in an organic cascade it is incorporated into both sides of the rotunda to add a decorative element inspired by the nearby listed building.

In discussion with the planners, it has been pointed out that with a projecting brick detailing, it is important to use bricks with strong arris in order for design to remain crisp. Often in the clean-up of reclaimed bricks, the arris are damaged and no longer have a sharp edge. Therefore reclaimed bricks will not need to be used for the rotunda but rather good quality red bricks.

Bradleys rust finish used at Granary Square, Kings Cross, London. The project consisted not only of cast iron balustrades, in mild steel frames with mild steel backing panels, but also a lift shaft façade clad with aluminium ‘C’ channels and window frames from mild steel section, all of which needed to have a uniformly high quality finish

We were also seeking to match the finish from the façade of a building which had inspired the architect.

With over 50 years of coating excellence, Bradleys are renowned as the market leaders in quality metal finishing. Their Oxide range is a multi-stage fusion process designed to capture rust and oxidized steel effects. This process gives a resilient weathered effect and redefines the substrate with a statement metal coating. Therefore, the proposal is that the 38mm d line railing and fixings are finished in Antique Rust III so that behind the

uniform high quality finish throughout. There was also the requirement for the finish to have a high degree of durability, to withstand a great deal of public use, but without frequent maintenance.
