Body Positive Fitness (BPF) was founded to be a welcoming and inclusive space for individuals who often feel excluded from mainstream fitness environments. Initially created with plus-size individuals in mind, BPF quickly grew to serve a broader community, including aging adults, people with disabilities, queer folks, and others who have felt overlooked or uncomfortable in traditional fitness settings.

With over 20 years of experience in the fitness industry, founder Jenna Breault (Doak) knows firsthand the struggles of navigating exercise and eating disorders in an industry that often prioritizes appearance over well-being. BPF was born out of Jenna's desire to create a safe and supportive environment where everyone, regardless of size, age, ability, or identity, can experience the joy of movement without judgment.

BPF operates out of studios in Aurora and Toronto, offering a wide range of in-person group classes such as strength training, active aging, and stretch and mobility sessions. Additionally, BPF has a robust online platform, providing virtual classes and personal training to ensure that their inclusive approach to fitness is accessible to everyone, no matter where they are.

At Body Positive Fitness, we keep our group sizes small, allowing for personalized attention and care for each client. Our mission is to create a fitness community where everyone feels seen, supported, and empowered to move in ways that feel good for their bodies. #GoodNeighbour

St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church

On July 18th, MP Leah Taylor Roy hosted an Echo Announcement and Roundtable with York Region mental health providers and youth, to seek their valuable input on designing a more effective and e cient Youth Mental Health Fund program. The Youth Mental Health Fund is a $500 million investment over five years, established in Budget 2024, aimed at enhancing youth access to mental health care and reducing barriers to seeking help.

St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church at the foot of Main St. was constructed in 1875, but its roots in Newmarket date back to 1834. It is at this time that representatives of Presbyterian meetings in Whitchurch and King townships came together to make an application to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland for a resident minister. Shortly after the first Presbyterian Church in Newmarket was erected at the north-east corner of Timothy and Church Streets, this church became affectionately known as the “Old Kirk”. During the Rebellion of 1837, this church was temporarily used as a detention camp.

In1874, the Old Kirk’s congregation had outgrown its premises and made plans with another Newmarket Presbyterian congregation to unite and erect a new church. Land on the corner of Eagle and Water Streets was purchased and a gothic revivalist church was erected the next year.

The new church had many modern features such as a water-powered organ (from the Holland River) installed in 1906. By 1956, however, the congregation had again outgrown its building and the house immediately to the east was purchased and used for expansion. In the early 1960’s this house was demolished and a new “Christian Education Building” was erected, adjacent to the old church.

In 1992 a massive new sanctuary was erected, keeping the 1875 church intact. The architecture of the new sanctuary is sympathetic to the original design, maintaining continuity between old and new. Today the church is led by the spiritual guidance of Reverend Laura Duggan.

The Neighbour o ce was filled with excitement when MP Leah Taylor Roy's summer leadership group spent the afternoon learning about connecting to the community through pictures, words and videos. Each student also had an opportunity to create their own podcast segment about the importance of young people getting involved in politics. #futureleaders

Healthy eating for seniors: 7 tips from Canada’s Food Guide

INTRODUCING

AMICA AURORA PROMENADE

Are you or a loved one thinking about senior living? We’re pleased to announce that our newest residence is opening fall 2025.

Amica Aurora Promenade will offer a range of personalized, professional care options, including Independent Living, Assisted Living, and Memory Care, as well as premium amenities and social activities that allow residents to continue to live the lifestyle they want.

Smart food choices help seniors stay energized, reduce bone and muscle loss, and lower the risk of heart disease and type-2 diabetes. The following tips will make it easier to plan healthy meals:

#1: Savour homemade foods

Try eating slowly, cooking more and consuming fewer processed foods.

#2: Plenty of fruits and vegetables

Health Canada recommends a balanced plate approach— so half of each meal should be vegetables and fruit.

#3: Choose whole grains

A quarter of your plate should be grains, ideally whole grains with high fibre.

#4: Go for lean or plant-based proteins

Fill the final quarter of your plate with heart-healthy proteins, like nuts and seeds, beans, eggs, fish, soy, and lower-fat dairy products.

#5: Drink more water and choose tender foods

Keep a glass nearby to remind you to stay hydrated. Tender dishes with zesty sauces can also help offset dry mouth, diminished taste and di culty chewing.

#6: Make good food and memories together

For seniors eating alone, it can be easy to cut nutritional corners, so consider a meal delivery service or alternating cooking nights with a loved one.

#7: Surprise your taste buds

Researching recipes online can inspire a healthy diet, and serve as an easy way to get a range of vitamins and minerals.

Gary McBlain, National Director of Culinary Services at Amica, ensures all menus prioritize nutritional needs, variety, and of course, delicious taste! Learn more at amica.ca

We were "bowled over" at the Aurora Chamber of Commerce After 5 event that was held at the Aurora Lawn Bowling Club, on July 25th! Chamber members gathered at the 110 year old club that is nestled in a picturesque location along Maple Street in Aurora. Attendees had the opportunity to give this social and very fun game a try! Lawn bowling originated in ancient Egypt, and became popular in the United Kingdom around the 13th century. It was revived by the Scots in the mid-1800s, who drew up the rules and established flat greens as playing fields. These original game rules are typically the same as present-day rule. Harley

Hi there, I'm Harley! I became a local surrender when my owner became ill and could no longer take care of me. I am a small but mighty little guy, and enjoy going for leisurely walks and sitting on my favourite person's lap. I'm looking for an adult-only home (with no cats), as I can be particular with my friends... requiring slow introductions to new dogs. I can bark and nip at new people, therefore I need an experienced home to manage and work on this with me.

I’m

Shelby

I'm Shelby! I had some masses on my belly that were removed, but unfortunately, it was lymphoma. I am currently undergoing chemotherapy treatments and need a family who will bring me to appointments. Like other dogs, I enjoy companionship. A slow and proper introduction if there is another dog in the home, is all that’s required. The prognosis isn’t great for me, as I'm considered palliative. I just want to truly relax in a home, for however long I have left, as I have a ton of love to offer in that time... can you give me this gift?

Milo

Hey there! I'm Milo, a 10-year-old Mini Dachshund with a heart full of love for my mom - I'm always by her side and proud to be a Mama's Boy! In the summer, you can sometimes catch us chilling on the patios of Main Street, where I charm everyone with my dashing good looks. Treats are my jam, and I usually share them with my sidekick Mu n. Together, we're the dynamic Wiener Dog duo 'Milo and Mu n,' spreading cuteness and paw-sitive vibes wherever we go!

Miss Basil

I'm Miss Basil! I am around 8 years old and I came to Sweet Acres Pig Sanctuary in May 2019, from a very sad backyard breeder, with Sweet Pea (my only surviving baby) and Rosemary. Sadly, Sweet Pea passed away 6 months ago, leaving me alone for the first time ever. I am slowly coming around though and starting to trust people. Please consider sponsoring me; helping me and my pig family maintain a healthy diet, providing us with proper medical treatments, and helping us live our fullest lives! Muffin

Woof! I'm Mu n, a 12-year-old Mini Dachshund with the cutest short legs you'll ever see. Rescued from a rough start, I'm now living my best life every single day! My favourite things are yummy treats, cozy naps, and endless escapades with my BFF Milo. Sure, I might have a habit of barking up a storm, but that’s just my way of making sure everyone knows how fabulous I am. My life is a tail-wagging adventure, and I’m enjoying every single moment of it!

Willow

Hi my name is Willow! I’m a German Shepherd with lots of energy. I’m a friendly doggie and have a strong bark. I love belly rubs, treats, play fighting with my kitten, and chasing balls with my girls. I take long naps, and that’s why I’m awake all night. My family met me after I stopped trying to be a guard dog. Now my family loves me and I love them forever!

optic Internet

In this month’s editorial, we want to talk about the importance of having fibre – right to your home.

Unlike other carriers, telMAX provides a 100% fibre optic connection, from our o ce right to your home.

What does that mean for you?

By using 100% fibre optic connections, we can ensure that the speeds transmitted are the speeds that you signed up for.

By using a “hybrid” model, such as fibre to a central node and copper cabling to the home, or a coaxial-based network, other providers are not able to consistently transfer the speeds that they advertise. This is one of the biggest reasons why your speed tests may be showing inconsistent results.

What does that mean for your Internet experience?

If you have 100% fibre – it means you get uninterrupted reliability and high speeds. If you do not have 100% fibre – it means that you may have inconsistent speeds, which will impact your ability to work, stream, or upload/download files.

To learn more about the benefits of 100% fibre optic Internet call 905-233-7371 or visit www.telmax.com.

DAWN GALLAGHER MURPHY

MPP for Newmarket–Aurora

Building Our Community Together

On July 3rd, MPP Dawn Gallagher Murphy announced that the Ontario government is making it faster and easier for people in York Region to connect to high-quality, comprehensive mental health and addictions services close to home by building a new mental health hub in Newmarket. The province will continue to support the project’s design and construction, building on the previous investment of $200,000 to support the early planning of the hub. The new York Region Mental Health Community Care Hub is the first model of its kind in the region and will expand mental health and addiction supports for both youth and adults under one roof.

As the summer is quickly ending, I have reflected on the many conversations I have had with you, our community members, as I visited numerous neighbourhoods and knocked on lots of doors over these past few months. As I listened to your thoughts and concerns, I heard what was on your mind and heart. For many of you, it was concern for your children and making sure they have a nurturing, inclusive place to live in, to learn, and grow. These conversations were on my mind a lot this summer as I drove through the streets of Newmarket—Aurora, a place I have called home with my husband and son for more than fifteen years. Like you, there are many things that keep me up at night, but as I look at where we are now, I can’t help but feel proud and excited about what the future will bring as we work hard at Queen’s Park. I am a fierce supporter of Newmarket—Aurora. This is my home and you are my neighbours.

So, let’s get to know each other a little more and come together on September 29th between 2p.m. to 4p.m. at Newmarket’s Riverwalk Commons for our 3rd Annual Community BBQ. National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

A Message from Michael Parsa

As a new school year begins, I want to extend my best wishes to students, teachers, parents, and school staff across our province. September marks the return to classrooms, so embrace every opportunity to grow and challenge yourselves. Education is the cornerstone of a strong, vibrant society, and each of you plays an important role in shaping our future.

This month, on September 30th, we recognize the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation to reflect on the painful history and lasting impacts of Residential Schools in Canada. This day is about remembering the Indigenous children who were taken from their families, and the painful legacy that still exists today. It is important that we do not just acknowledge this history, but also commit to listening and learning from Indigenous voices.

Food Network hosted their 2nd annual Summer Community BBQ appreciation to all of their amazing local supporters! On August 14th, the community was invited to join YRFN for some delicious food prepared by their very own SEASONings culinary team, which included burgers, grilled vegetable sandwiches, an assortment of seasonal salads, tasty drinks and more! Their delicious house made pickles were also be available for purchase. It was a tasty afternoon!

We stand in solidarity with Survivors, their families, and their communities, acknowledging their unwavering commitment to preserving the culture and heritage of Indigenous peoples. Lasting reconciliation is not just about looking back; it is about moving forward together – in lockstep with Indigenous partners.

This year, Ontario marks the fourth observance of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day by encouraging all Ontarians to learn about the ongoing legacy and impacts of the Indian Residential School system and support greater understanding of the importance of working to advance meaningful reconciliation.

Speed cameras in use near Town of Newmarket schools to make streets safer and to protect children.

Protect your neighbourhood. Know the speed limit. Drive within it. Funds collected will be used to offset the cost to run the program and support safe streets and other Town initiatives.

School Zone Safety Tips for Motorists:

Drive the speed limit to avoid getting a ticket with the launch of Newmarket's speed cameras near schools

Pay attention near schools and look out for children crossing

Do not park in a NO PARKING zone

Obey and respect our crossing guards

Do not stop in NO STOPPING zones. Doing so can obstruct the visibility of other drivers and pedestrians.

Safety Tips for those walking to school:

Always cross the street at a school crossing guard location or at an intersection

Be patient and take your direction from pedestrian signals

Be alert and don’t walk distracted with a mobile device or headphones

If you are not sure whether you have enough time to cross, don't take the chance – wait for the next signal

Letter from MAYOR TAYLOR

Let’s get to school healthy and safe

September heralds the end of summer and the beginning of a new school year.

After a couple of months without kids converging on schoolyards and buses making frequent stops in our neighborhoods, let’s remind ourselves to take a bit more time and care in our daily commutes.

Keep an eye out for kids on their way to and from school – walking, riding their bikes and scooters. Also, pay attention to the crossing guards who help students to travel safely. If you have the chance, I encourage everyone to thank the crossing guards for being there.

To enhance safety further around our schools, the Town will soon introduce Community Safety Cameras, which will be used to enforce the speed limits on the roads by schools. Speeding on residential streets is by far the most consistent concern I hear from residents, so it’s no surprise that I’ve had much positive feedback since we announced these cameras. The Region has had similar cameras for a couple of years which have been effective at reducing speeds and making our streets safer.

Abuse Hurts Champion of the Month

Abuse Hurts is happily honouring Liz Young (née Livingston) this month. We are so grateful to her for all her amazing support of Abuse Hurts over the past few years. Liz came on board with our fundraising committee several years ago and has made many valuable contributions through her involvement therein. Last year, she agreed to head up the organization and coordination of our second annual fashion show which occurred this past May at the Old Town Hall in Newmarket. The event was a huge success, raising $50,000 (double the funds raised in the previous year) for our Charity and so much of that credit goes to Liz.

Her leadership skills and planning abilities kept our army of staff, volunteers, models, committee members and vendor partners working together smoothly and e ciently. In addition to being incredibly organized, her people skills made this undertaking a pleasant experience for everyone. Our claim to this successful event was in the enjoyment of all the attendees – we received glowing reports and amazingly positive feedback from people who actually experienced the attendee-side of this event. Liz was an amazing off-site strategist and an extremely reliable on-site overseer.

Keeping all that in mind, we are ever grateful for her passion and drive to get the job done well. We are even more excited to hear she has agreed to head up the event again next year. Abuse Hurts thanks you, Liz, for all your amazing support and congratulations on your recent marriage!

As a kid, the CNE would be the highlight of my summer. We were very poor so I would spend the weeks leading up to the CNE collecting pop bottles and the 5 cents Food Building coupons from the Toronto Sun so I would have money to play the games and visit the Food Building. Today, I represent York Region on the CNE Association and attended the O cial Opening and other VIP events. Each summer I attend the CNE a few times and through the corner of my eye's memory, I still see that young kid with a pocket full of nickels, quarters and 5 cent food building coupons hustling through the grounds to enjoy a 10 cent Shopsy’s hotdog. - Tom Vegh
