Steve and his wife moved to Aurora in 1975. They had their children here and raised their family in this great community. Having completed a 30 year career in policing in Toronto, Steve retired at the rank of Staff Sergeant. He co-founded Neighbourhood Network; a Magna for Community initiative that links community resources with community needs, served as a member of Aurora Council (1997-2000), was honoured as Aurora’s “Citizen of the Year” in 1996 and has received the Chief of Police Award, Community Living Lifetime of Excellence in Community Service Award and both the Queens Golden and Diamond Jubilee Awards.
The community has always meant a lot to Steve. He first started volunteering with his kid’s sports teams and then became a charter member of the Optimist Club, where he realized that the great sense of community he felt here at a local level, didn’t just happen without any help. There were a lot of people who had volunteered and contributed to create this great community sense and feel. He strongly believes that when you live in a place like Aurora and have the opportunity to take advantage of all there is to offer, you also have a responsibility to get involved and give back. Steve has had the privilege of being involved with many organizations over the years, including serving as former Chair of the Newmarket Chamber of Commerce and former Chair of the Board of Governors for the Character Community Foundation of York Region. Currently, he is a Director with The Belinda Stronach Foundation, a Director with the Aurora Economic Development Board and Co-Chair of the Philanthropy Cabinet for the Southlake Regional Health Centre Foundation.
“If you have a chance to work with others, all focused on the same agenda, all prepared to put the greater-good of the community before themselves, to put in the hard work, and have fun doing it, there’s so much that can be accomplished. Volunteering provides the opportunity to learn new skills, meet new people, create relationships and grow as an individual. There is no better feeling than helping others, and I intend on continuing to show my support for the community I love in the years to come.”
Steve will be co-emceeing the Dancing with the Easter Seals Stars event on October 5th and will be emceeing the Southlake Regional Health Centre Foundation’s Whiskey, Wine & MR Menswear event on November 1st. #GoodNeighbour

Brooks Farms started in the mid 1800’s when Edward Brooks decided to bring his family from England to Canada. After spending a few years closer to the town of Uxbridge, Edward moved the family a little further west towards Mount Albert, and set up home base at our current location.
For over 150 years the farm grew corn, wheat, barley, turnips, potatoes, and all sorts of farm animals. In 1990, the fourth generation farmer, Alvin Brooks and his wife Brenda, decided that growing pick your own strawberries and raspberries would help put their sons and daughter through school. In 1994, their second oldest son, Paul, decided to farm full-time with his father. In 1998, after several years of growth with strawberries and raspberries, Brooks Farms started to offer pick your own pumpkins, and the Fall Fun Festival was born. In 2007, Kelly joined the Brooks family. Her graphic design skills were put to use rebranding the farm and giving it the quirky characters customers have come to know and love: The Barnyard Bumpkins.
Thousands of visitors have enjoyed the entertainment, as well as the homemade jams and jellies, and fresh fruit and vegetables available at the farm. Every year we continue to grow by adding new activities, produce and fun! That’s why we say we have been: “Growing Fun for over 100 years!” *(which is actually well over 125 years now!)
Open Friday & Saturday Evenings, September 30thOctober 30th, 6pm - 9pm
Brooks Farms invites you to step inside its Barnyard Playland “After Dark” to experience a thrilling evening full of excitement and scares. Join us as our farm is transformed into a Halloweentown, with activities for little monsters who want a fun fright, and attractions for the brave souls who just love a good SCARE! Take your little monsters on a (Ghost) Story time Train Ride through the farmand you just might see some of the creepy creatures who lurk through the back fields of Brooks Farms!

As the days become cooler the first signs of fall are beginning and the great Canadian tradition of thanksgiving is just around the corner. I extend my warm wishes to all for a safe, enjoyable, and festive thanksgiving weekend with family and friends.
Over the past few weeks there have been a few announcements that will have a positive impact affecting Newmarket and Aurora. I was pleased to announce that our government invested over $65 million for a new replacement Dr. G. W. Williams secondary school in Aurora. Expected to be completed in 2026 it will provide 1,212 secondary spaces.
It was a great honour to announce that Ontario is providing nearly $65 million this year to the Municipality of York Region for public health providers to cover increased costs while ensuring more convenient access to public health services. The province will also invest over $50.4 million this year in York Region paramedic and ambulance services, representing a 7 per cent increase over last year. In addition, the government is investing $2.4 million (a 60 per cent increase over last year) to the Dedicated O oad Nurses Program. This will add nurses to assist o oading ambulance patients at hospitals so ambulances can return faster to the community. Please mark your calendar and plan to attend my annual community BBQ. Join me for food, music and fun for the whole family at the Riverwalk Commons, 200 Duncan Drive, Newmarket on Sunday, October 22 from 2:00

Williams Secondary School. Once completed, this project will deliver 1,212 secondary spaces for local families. The investment is part of Ontario’s commitment to providing approximately $15 billion to support school construction, repair, and renewal over 10 years.
October was the eighth month of the year in the Roman Calendar.

Homecare from LAS is ideal because it reflects what seniors really want—to live safely and independently in their own homes. There is plenty of research to show that seniors overwhelmingly want to age in place—living in familiar surroundings in the community they love and in the comfort of their own home.
Living Assistance Services’ care and support stand above the rest because they are very personalized. Rather than offering assistance with a small list of specific tasks, our caregivers provide a wide range of services that reflect each client’s needs and preferences. This may involve personal care, meal preparation, driving, laundry and light housekeeping—as well as many other services for seniors. Overall, they are dedicated to providing joyful companionship, whether that means playing a game of cards, engaging in interesting conversation and always being a kind, compassionate presence.
Because our homecare services are offered one-on-one, our seniors don’t have to wait their turn for personal care or feel rushed; instead, our personal support workers take the time to assist them with care and attention to their needs. They get to know each client, asking questions and taking cues, and they develop warm, genuine relationships. After a while, they’ll know that your grandfather enjoys doing a crossword puzzle after breakfast, your great-aunt takes a nap each day after lunch, or your elderly Mum and Dad like to watch the news after dinner. Our caregivers not only learn these routines but help facilitate them so that your loved one feels happy, content and at ease.
For advice about seniors and care at home, please contact Brian Porter, Director and Owner of LAS, at 416.483.0070 (office), 905.758.2486 (cell), or b.porter@laservices.ca and visit www.livingassistance.ca

We're Pamela & Tommy Lee, an inseparable duo with a very unique look (Bonded Pair)! We love cuddling in the same bed, and having our walks and play time together. We love to swim on nice days and prefer being the only two dogs around, as we don't get along well with others. "I'm the more confident and outgoing of our pair, and get along really well with all humans." - Pamela "I am more anxious than Pam, and prefer to meet people slowly. I can become a bit vocal when I'm uncomfortable." - Tommy
I'm Fitz! A very calm, gentle, low - medium energy guy. I enjoy going for walks and sni ng around, spending most of my time on my donut bed. Since I have been back I have started on supplements and am doing really well. I will be happiest in a quiet home that will respect my space.
I'm Henry, a 6 year old lively and charismatic sprocker spaniel with an abundance of energy. I'm always ready to play and will explore until my heart’s content. These survival responses create di cult emotions, complicated behaviours and perceptions of reality that interfere with daily living. Talk therapy alone cannot access the brain regions that have been settled for years in complicated patterns or change the person’s rigid narrative of themselves. Thus, it is essential to use a comprehensive approach to support clients! On September 7th, members of the business community provided their insight and feedback as The Town of Aurora began their inclusive strategy-making process to update their economic development strategic plan. The Aurora Economic Development Strategy serves all parts of our economy including the industry/sector which is an economic engine for our community.
‘Aurora has been our home since 1985, and we’re proud to be members of the community. The people and the local authorities have been instrumental in supporting our growth, exemplified by our recent site expansion. Our business is developing Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) for the pharmaceutical industry and gaining approvals that allow our clients to commercially manufacture new drugs. We believe that this work helps reduce the burden of disease on patients, which is why we consider ourselves a Patient Centric organization.
We look forward to continuing our long running relationship as we continue to grow our business in partnership with the town of Aurora.’

Hello, Neighbours!
The Autumn season is a time to give a lending hand to those in need and to give thanks to all who selflessly give their time and service throughout our community year-round.
The past few years have been hard for many Canadians, but we are continuing our efforts to make life more affordable. As a government, we are helping Canadians of all ages with supports through actions like the: Removal of GST on new Rental Builds, Canada Workers Benefit, Canada Child Benefit, Climate Action Incentive, Dental Benefit, Rental Assistance program, the Early Learning Program, and the $10 per day National Day/Childcare program.
Over the past month, I have continued to visit neighbourhoods throughout Aurora and have enjoyed attending many community events to connect with you. Among these are, the first Uptown Asian Festival, Oak Ridge's Terry Fox Run, Fall Community Clean-up, the Oak Ridge's Lion Club Toy Donation Drive for Childhood Cancer, and many more.
Our Parliament resumed on September 18th, which means I am back in Ottawa. My priority as an MP is to ensure that I communicate with you and bring your concerns and opinions to the national level. As the fall continues, make sure to stay tuned to my website and social media for details and information on my in-person Coffee & Chat events.

Is anyone else already missing Thursday Night Concerts at Riverwalk Commons?!
On August 31st, the community gathered for the final concert, Splash of Culture

The Town of Newmarket is working to expand housing options and make more homes available and affordable.
In the past few years, a variety of homes have been built or are under construction, and still more have been approved to be built. This includes apartment buildings on the Yonge Street and Davis Drive corridors and low-rise buildings next to the hospital.
There are also many projects in the planning stage including a mixture of singles, green homes, townhomes, low-rise buildings and affordable housing in the southwest corner of town; several townhome developments throughout town; as well as subsidized housing units on Bayview Parkway and Yonge Street.
We are in the midst of reviewing Newmarket’s O cial Plan. This Plan will guide the Town’s development, including the types of housing, the number of homes, and where they will be built in Newmarket through to 2051.
I encourage everyone to support our efforts to expand housing and build a variety of different types of housing for everyone – from young people starting their careers, to families, to seniors enjoying their retirement.

Abuse Hurts is proud to know so many amazing women. Suzan Challis is one of those as our Champion of the Month for October. Her passion is infectious and she is a delight to be around. We very much appreciate her sense of commitment.
Suzan walked through our doors in May of 2021 and she was eager to be put to work at our warehouse, helping to sort through clothing and housewares donations. Her energy and personality was instrumental in bringing her quickly through the ranks. She was quickly promoted to volunteering at our Hope Boutique and at events like our Christmas in July fundraiser. Then Suzan became more and more involved with our program director and was soon assisting in facilitating clients through our Delivering Hope program. Suzan loves helping women which led her to co-facilitating a successful, 4-week workshop on self-esteem for us with Tracee Chambers.
Then she volunteered at our first annual fashion show fundraiser, and is now heading up our Handbags of Hope campaign (see ad in this issue). Her volunteerism is a reflection of her belief in the importance of giving back to the community. Suzan has lived in Newmarket for 30 years and has always been very involved in community events through her children and, later, at places like Inn from the Cold, Rose of Sharon and the John Howard Society. Suzan is now the Newmarket Ambassador for Routes which gives access to basic needs for vulnerable residents. Thanks, Suzan!
