NEIGHBOUR COVER STORY

Manha and Laiba Yusuf

www.neighbourmedia.ca

Manha Yusuf and Laiba Yusuf are two young sisters who started volunteering and fundraising in Newmarket and surrounding areas 5 years ago. The girls have collectively raised over $52,000 in financial and in-kind donations and have donated the funds and items to various charities across the region. Manha and Laiba have collectively volunteered over 4000 hours to date, serving the community and making a difference in the lives of under-privileged, homeless, lower income households, seniors and youth. The girls have annual fundraisers, including backpack drives, winter holiday drives, free art therapy and pet therapy sessions to help improve the mental health of the participants, community bbq events for the homeless, holiday dinners for lower income residents, and fresh fruit/vegetable donations to local organizations - just to name a few! The girls are continuing to work on new initiatives and are focused on issues that impact mental health, creating positive, affordable solutions for everyone. Some of the charities they have supported so far include Inn from the Cold, Rose of Sharon, Belinda's Place, 360 Kids, Children Aid Society, Sickkids, Southlake, Yellow Brick House, Newmarket Food Pantry, Center for Addiction and Mental Health, CMHA, and Co-op Housing Society Newmarket. The girls successfully registered their organization as an incorporated non-profit organization in 2022 and continue to be an inspiration for younger and older generations alike.

Visit stampoutstigma.ca to learn more about the amazing work these girls have done and continue to do in our community!

“Since meeting Myles, Lynnette and Elisa I have watched them help build our community in Newmarket and Aurora. They are always working promoting charities and events within the community which impressed me greatly and is the reason I advertise every month in the Neighbour Paper. Our community is better because of them.”

Letter from MAYOR MRAKAS

Spring has finally sprung, and we are starting to see some warmer double-digit weather here in Aurora! But with the snow gone, the litter around Town is becoming more apparent. Let’s all do our part to clean-up our yards and keep our community litter-free. A special thanks to all the residents, businesses and community groups that participated in our annual clean-up event last month. We appreciate your hard work and dedication to keeping our Town looking green!

As we settle into May, we have another green-focused event coming up: the Town’s second annual Electric Vehicle Showcase. Taking place on Sunday, May 7 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the parking lot at the Stronach Aurora Recreation Complex, this full-day event will be the perfect opportunity to test drive, analyze and compare the latest electric vehicles and charging solutions. You’ll also be able to learn from experts and chat with other EV owners. Plus, don’t miss the exclusive opportunity to take a spin around our micro-mobility test track and learn more about the SARIT micro mobility car – a made-in-Aurora innovation developed by Stronach International founder, Frank Stronach! I really do encourage you to make it out to this great event, as driving electric is an important way residents can help reduce their carbon footprint. More details about this event can be found at: aurora.ca/EVshowcase

As always, I encourage residents and businesses to reach out to me at any time either by phone, through social media or in-person. I look forward to keeping everyone informed and engaged - #gettingthingsdone

The Square is a key part of the Town’s downtown revitalization, complementing Aurora’s small-town charm with big-city amenities. Features include:

• 29,000 square-foot outdoor community space. During the winter, a beautiful skating loop will be complete with an overhead catenary lighting system. During the warmer months, an interactive water feature and Amphitheatre will be a hub for community gatherings, events, performances, and more.

• 32,000 square-foot addition to the beloved Church Street School. Featuring a flexible Performance Hall with seating for up to 250 patrons and a variety of multi-purpose arts programming spaces.

• Permanent artifact collection. Enjoy what the Aurora Museum & Archives has to offer in an environmentally controlled collections space.

NEIGHBOURHOOD PETS

May is National Pet Month!

Mochi

Hi, I’m Mochi. Some people say my eyes are crossed, but I don’t see it... I love a good sweater and enjoy long walks on my leash. My proud pawrents, Rose and Mike, decided to submit my photo after seeing the April Pet Page at Cardinal Press on Main Street.

Daisy

My name is Daisy and I’m a rescue dog, but don’t tell my humans - because I actually rescued them. They are much happier and laugh a lot more now that I've moved into their home. I give them lots of love and kisses and in return they take me for walks and play squeaky-ball-catch, which is my favourite thing to do in the whole world.

Simba

Woof! Hi there - my name is Simba and I am a 2 year old golden retriever. I love my pool, my toys, my family and I especially love shoes.

Jimmy

I’m Jimmy! You may recognize me from around Historic Newmarket - my favorite place to visit. I will be turning 10 this year and have been told I’m a Shih tzu mix of some sort. All I know for sure is I’m 100% unique with my awesome personality, lopsided ears and snaggletooth. Most importantly though... My family loves me and Life is Good!

Abby

Hi there - I'm Abby, a 6 year old Galah Cockatoo! I love car rides, visiting Starbucks and to cause as much mischief as I can. I also love dancing and hanging upside down. Follow my adventures @abbysamazon

Finnegan

I’m a 10 year old English Golden Retriever and my name is Finnegan! I’m pretty easy going and love people and other dogs. I’m really outdoorsy and enjoy long walks, playing with my ball, and in the summer I’m a real boater dog. I love the water and rolling in the grass and sometimes in the mud. Life is pretty darn good!

Sprucing up for summer

With Spring in full swing, we’re setting our mind to sprucing up Newmarket.

Saturday, May 6 marks the annual Community Clean-Up Day. Residents across Newmarket will pitch in to clean up parks and trails in their neighbourhood.

Thanks to everyone who takes part in the clean-up each year. Check the town’s website for details on where you can pick up a clean-up kit.

I’ve taken part in clean-up day since it began and I marvel at how far it has come since the first event over 40 years ago when I waded into the Holland River to pull out shopping carts and old car tires.

Town crews will be trimming the parks in the near future and street sweepers are out right now, cleaning up the sand and debris left from winter maintenance. These clouds of dust will soon be replaced with an explosion of colorful plants and flowers in the baskets and barrels downtown.

Keeping Newmarket clean needs to be a team effort town wide. I hope we can count on everyone to do a little something to keep our town tidy. I also hope you have the opportunity to enjoy all the beauty that Newmarket has to offer throughout the summer.

May has been called the month of grace as it is the fifth month in the year and the number five symbolizes grace. May is my favourite month of the year. It is when we see our gardens begin to blossom and trees start coming to life. I can feel the unmerited gift of nature coming to life once again, and for that, I am grateful.

Over the past month, I was gifted with the opportunity to meet with many great local businesses and residents at various events held in our community. So impressed with Wolfpack Packaging Inc. and Pulp Moulded Products. A local manufacturer of eco-friendly packaging alternatives and custom-made goods using recycled materials. This business is focused on green technology, and I loved the recycle, recycle, recycle culture of this business.

Thank you to Sansei Jones for the kind invitation to speak at the Junior’s Karate Tournament held at the Magna recreation centre in Newmarket. Participating in sports is incredibly important for individuals and our society. They bring people together, promote teamwork, and teach us the value of healthy competition.

Great evening at Market Brewing to help build a diaper mountain to benefit the Rose of Sharon Services for Young Mothers. It was a full house and thanks to the generosity of all who attended, that mountain was built with more than 200 large boxes of diapers!

I would like to thank Neighbour Media for all they do for our community. I believe in this business as they always put the community first. This to me is what ‘Building Our Community’ is all about. Congratulations on your 1 st anniversary. Wishing you many more years of successful community building as you are making a positive difference.

The Ontario government is expanding the Investing in Women’s Futures program to 10 additional locations across the province to create more economic opportunities for women. This expansion is part of a $6.9 million investment over 3 years to enhance the program and help more women who experience social and economic barriers to connect to supports and develop the skills they need to gain financial security and independence. On March 27th, MPP Gallagher Murphy visited Women’s Centre of York Region in Newmarket to make the investment announcement.

The Ontario government is investing an additional $202 million annually in the province’s Homelessness Prevention Program and Indigenous Supporting Housing Program (which includes an allocation of $36,701,600 to the Regional Municipality of York). While many claim to be environmentally conscious, there are few who are genuinely making a significant impact in sustainable building by creating meaningful solutions. Howland Green Homes is one such company, which aims to exceed net-zero standards and enter net positive territory. Their latest venture, the Wellington East Business Centre in Aurora (located at Wellington St. E and 404), is the largest o ce building in Canada that goes beyond net-zero standards.

“We can reduce our consumption greatly and it’s relatively easy to accomplish,” says Dave de Sylva, president of Howland Green Homes. “We need to use much less energy, in general, and start using today’s energy, such as solar and geothermal, rather than carbon-based options.”

Coming in at roughly 80,000 square feet, the Wellington East Business Centre will capture more renewable energy than it requires for the operation of the entire structure annually, reducing its operational energies by about 85% . Powered by sun and geothermal energy, it will serve as the perfect combination of ecology, economy and technological advancement. Owning a space at this building is saving more than just the planet. Thanks to all its focus on conservation, it’s saving businessowners money month over month, year over year.

Howland Green is a builder and developer of residential and commercial properties with a commitment to building with greater sustainability than any other builder in Canada. They have recently launched a new commercial o ce condominium in Aurora, with units now for sale.

Hello Neighbours! As spring settles in, I hope this season of renewal is a happy one for you and your families. This month across Canada we celebrate Asian Heritage Month. For the last two centuries, immigrants have come to Canada from across Asia, bringing with them a rich heritage representing many languages, ethnicities, and religions.

May also marks Jewish Heritage Month which serves as an opportunity for all Canadians to reflect upon the tremendous obstacles that the Jewish people have overcome that led to seek safety in Canada. This month is an opportunity for all of us to recommit our solidarity with Jewish Canadians and stand together against antisemitism in all its forms.

I encourage you to learn more about and celebrate the heritage of Asian and Jewish peoples and their vast contributions to Canada’s social, economic, political, and cultural fabric and recognize their contributions and achievements.

During May, we recognize Red Dress Day: The National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and Two Spirited people. Our government is working with provinces, territories, Indigenous organizations, and communities across the country to end racism, discrimination and violence against Indigenous women, girls and 2SLBGTQI+ people through the federal pathway. This pathway will evolve to remain effective in ending the national tragedy of MMIWG and 2SLGBTQI+ people.

As always, it is a pleasure to represent you in the House of Commons as your Member of Parliament. Please know that you can always reach out to me with your interests and concerns. My team and I are happy to assist you. Additionally, you can follow me on social media to get updates on the work I am doing to represent you, and join me for a Coffee & Chat, which are listed on my website leahtaylorroymp.ca

Jennifer Walker

What is your most memorable community moment?

Last summer, my daughter was a part of the Marquee Summer Camp. They put together a production of Mary Poppins, which they performed on a beautiful summer early evening in the Aurora Town Park.

What is your favourite food?

My “go to” is always pizza! From the store bought slice… to our homemade creations… to the fancy flatbreads at high end restaurants … pizza is always a hit!

If you could give advice to your younger self, what would it be?

As the saying goes, life is a marathon. It is hard in the moment to realize, but when you relax and worry a little less, things come easier and life is more enjoyable. Smell the roses!

What is your favourite song, artist/group or genre of music?

During the pandemic, I took up the ukulele! This has driven me to really appreciate the Beatles. I have many memories of my parents playing their songs, and now I am learning them! My current favourite to play is “Yesterday”.

How do you giveback or pay-it-forward within the community?

I am very proud to be a part of the 100 Women Who Care and the Aurora Chamber of Commerceboth giving me many opportunities to support local small businesses. I am also amazed at how much I’ve learned from The Able Network participants.

Regan Irvine

If you could give advice to your younger self, what would it be?

It would be to enjoy your loved ones as much as possible because one day time will run out . Find something your passion about and do whatever it takes to make a career out of it.

If you could have dinner with one person, dead or alive who would it be?

It’s hard for me to pick just one. If I could roll it back and have dinner with my dad who passed away in 2013 and my brother - the three of us being at the same table would be really special to me.

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?

It would definitely be Mexico! The people, the food, the culture, there is a reason I have a few tattoos paying tribute to Mexico.

What is your most memorable community moment?

When I was finally able to open up a restaurant in my hometown of Newmarket.

What is your favourite sport? Do you play for any local teams?

My favorite sports to play are hockey and golf. I am fortunate to play beer league hockey with some of my closest friends, the laughs and stories are some of my best memories.

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY

To all the incredible moms out there, we celebrate your remarkable strength and dedication. ank you for all that you do for your families and communities!

MICHAEL PARSA MPP - Aurora–Oak Ridges–Richmond Hill

A Message from MPP Parsa

Dear friends,

This month, we have an opportunity to celebrate and recognize the immeasurable contributions of the special women in our lives. Families in Canada, as in much of the world, will celebrate Mother’s Day on May 14 to recognize the kindness and dedication with which mothers nurture and care for their families. In raising and instructing our children, in being the foundation of our families and role models of our community – we owe a debt of gratitude to our moms, stepmoms, grandmothers, and mother figures. As a famous 13th century Persian poet named Rumi once said, “we are born of love; love is our mother.”

This Mother’s Day let’s remember to take a moment and thank the incredible women who sustain us, no matter how tough it gets. It’s essential not to take for granted the countless selfless ways in which they look after our families. So whether it’s bringing flowers, making breakfast, or simply picking up the phone, I hope we can show our moms the gratitude and appreciation they truly deserve.

Happy Mother’s Day everyone.

Congratulations Maddie on your first sparing competition at Family Martial Arts! Congratulations to Lauren Hanna and the residents in the Park neighbourhood for organizing their FIRST Annual Easter Egg Hunt. Families gathered at Cousins Park on April 8th for treats, games, photos with the Easter Bunny and then an EGGciting Easter egg hunt!

Abuse Hurts Champion of the Month

It was early 2022 when Mike Cartwright of Main Street Realty met Lynnette Lanning of Neighbour Media. He was talking to Lynnette and she mentioned knowing Ellen Campbell, CEO and Founder of Abuse Hurts and what wonderful things Ellen was doing for people. He asked Lynnette if she could introduce him to Ellen as he wanted to help. After meeting Ellen and learning about what some people are experiencing with abuse, he decided to help as much as possible.

Today, Main Street Realty is a big-as-possible supporter of Abuse Hurts. Mike personally believes that Big Government is not the answer as they cannot help everyone. That is where private businesses have to step in and help. Main Street Realty is 100% committed to helping the community they reside in and to supporting Abuse Hurts now and in the future for all people that have suffered abuse. It is a tragedy that has and is happening to children and adults in this country and, as a private company, they are here to help.

Another wonderful example of the Newmarket Optimist Club the youth in our community! On April 1st & 2nd, the Newmarket Optimist Club drove the Easter Bunny around Newmarket, stopping at 60 locations, so that kids could get photos and Easter treats! newmarketoptimists.club

Abuse Hurts is so appreciative of this friendly, passionate and caring company and all they contribute toward assisting survivors in having a better future. Thanks to Mike, Diane, Chris and all the wonderful people

NEW PARK OFFERS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE!

Allegro in downtown Aurora offers families a refined lifestyle surrounded by nature. Soon, area residents will be able to enjoy the new 21.3-acre community park. The park, which has yet to be named, is the result of collaboration between Geranium, Town representatives and neighbours to design an amenity offering a variety of passive uses for many age groups. Prior to implementing the final park plan, Geranium set out to reinstate the Tannery Creek system to its original natural condition with a healthier ecosystem. Previous owners of the property modified these creeks causing temperatures to rise resulting in a decrease in their functioning habitats. Working with the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority, native fish were removed while realignment work proceeded, then returned to the creeks where they are now re-establishing in the improved habitat. A significant tree preservation plan and planting of hundreds of trees, shrubs and vegetation contribute to the park’s beautiful environment. The park includes junior and senior playgrounds, bridge connections, new trails connecting to the existing system, wetlands, ponds, a meditation circle, trail signage and benches with Bench Fit signage.

Allegro is a master-planned community of 157 exceptional single family detached residences being built in phases. Geranium is proud to be a 2023 BILD finalist in the category of Best New Community (Planned) for Allegro. To learn more about available homes and the community visit www.geranium.com/aurora-allegro

Tired of boring old burgers? Not a fan of regular hotdogs? Try something different! Something fun! Try Chungchun Rice Hotdog.

Chungchun Rice Hotdog is a Korean-style hotdog brand that originated in Seoul, Korea. We opened our first location in 2019 and since then have expanded to a total of 46 franchised locations across the country.

Our goal is to bring Korean culture to Canada. We achieve this by crafting our hotdogs using authentic Korean techniques, including the use of glutinous rice batter instead of the traditional wheat batter; which provides a soft sensation, after the initial crunch of your first bite.

Rolled in sticky rice flour, deep-fried, and made to order - our hotdogs are Korea's favourite street food!

The ooey-gooey Half Mozzarella hotdog is a juicy beef sausage, topped with mozzarella cheese, with the most insane cheese pull you've ever seen. Our Gamsung hotdog is wrapped in tiny potato fries that create a crunchy and unique experience. We even have a Chocolate option for those hotdog lovers with a sweet tooth.

Bite into something NEW with Chungchun Rice Hotdog!
