NEIGHBOUR COVER STORY

@neighbourmedia @neighbouraurora @neighboureastgwillimbury @neighbournewmarket www.neighbourmedia.ca

Friends Rebecca Gardiner and Joanne Sweers wanted to do something big to support The Newmarket Food Pantry combat hunger in their community and to highlight what a great town Newmarket is to live and work in; and so the NWMRKTproud initiative was created. In 2023 between toque and T-shirt sales they raised over $27,000. This year their goal is $30,000!

With the backing of local businesses and community members, 100% of the $20 cost for their limited edition, NWMRKTproud Pride T-shirt will go directly to The Food Pantry. T-shirts are available at their launch event at Market Brewing Company on June 3rd, at the Newmarket Farmers Market, June 1 & 8 and during the York Pride Festival, June 14 & 15. They are looking for individuals and businesses to help them reach their goal. Come to their launch event, purchase a T-shirt to show your pride in our community, celebrate Pride Month AND support your neighbours. You can also contact them to discuss sponsorship in this year’s campaign. (Rebecca: sewperfect@rogers.com, Joanne: joannesweers@yahoo.ca)

Rebecca and Joanne believe this is more than just a T-shirt, it is a symbol of community support, making a real difference. It is a symbol of community spirit as well - a celebration of all that makes Newmarket great!

Thank you to these Good Neighbours for spreading positivity in the community and raising funds for an amazing cause. #NWMRKTproud

Fibre Optic Internet

This month, the telMAX team would like to help you understand what “Fibre Optic Internet” is! What makes it special, and what it means for your connection. What is Fibre Optics?

• Fibre Optics transmits data in the form of light.

• Transmitting the signal as light allows it to move faster than traditional Internet – providing faster and more consistent connections.

• The signal bounces off an internal layer in the glass fibre called “cladding” in a zig-zag pattern at high speeds.

What makes Fibre Optics Special?

• Supports higher bandwidth (download AND upload) than traditional Internet methods.

• Used by Google, NASA, Data centres, and other government agencies around the world.

• Allows for multiple connections to be fed from one core Fibre – as each cable can hold up to a maximum of 288 fibres.

What does Fibre mean for YOU?

• Faster, more reliable connection.

• Independent connection – your neighbour’s usage won’t impact your network. No slow downs or “peak times.”

• Fibre allows for symmetrical bandwidth where cable Internet does not. Meaning? You get the same upload and download speed.

telMAX uses our own 100% Fibre Optic Network to provide Canada’s Fastest Internet direct to your door!

This month has been filled with moments of community engagement and cultural celebration here in Newmarket—Aurora, reminding us of the strength and diversity of our community.

The Iftar Dinner at the Newmarket Islamic Centre was a celebration of Ramadan. Gathered under one roof, we shared stories that reinforced the ties of unity and peace within our community. It was a night filled with laughter and mutual understanding, a reflection of our shared values.

The excitement continued at the Newmarket Home & Lifestyle Show. This event showcased the best of local entrepreneurship and became a melting pot of ideas and friendships. It was incredibly rewarding to see so many familiar faces and to welcome new ones.

At the Aurora Legion, we marked the 100th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Air Force with a moving flag-raising ceremony. This event served as a tribute to the brave men and women who have served our nation, showing our profound respect and appreciation for their service.

Springtime joy was abundant at the Aurora Seniors Centre during the Easter festivities. The event provided delightful interactions with community members of all ages, from chats with the Easter Bunny to an engaging "Hopstacle" course, celebrating the season's spirit and community togetherness.

These events collectively highlight the strength found in our unity and shared experiences. As we move through spring, I eagerly anticipate connecting with each of you at upcoming events and remain deeply committed to Building Our Community Together.

To schedule a meeting, email my o ce at dawn.gallaghermurphy@pc.ola.org or call 905-853-9889.

MPP Dawn Gallagher Murphy welcomed Manha Yusuf into the constituency o ce on April 5th, to congratulate Manha on becoming a Page at the Legislative Assembly for the sitting that started on April 8th. It is great news for our community to now have 2 representatives serve in the Legislature!

On April 3rd, MPP Dawn Gallagher Murphy met with the team at Association des Francophones de la Région de York (AFRY) to announce the $200,000 Resilient Communities Fund grant from the provincial government’s Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) that will be used to assess the development of social enterprises and expand services. The project will strengthen AFRY’s capacity to serve the Francophone community in York Region. With the grant, AFRY will conduct strategic planning and feasibility studies to ensure the long-term sustainability of its French-language programs, such as daycares and summer camps, which are valued by the Francophone population in York Region.

Recognize your Healthcare Hero today!

Every day at Southlake, physicians and nurses across the hospital provide leading families in our community.

It's hard to imagine Newmarket resident Tim Greenwood would tackle a 5km run/walk, only 6 months after having his lower left leg amputated. However, Tim is inspiring beyond measure and he did just that to say 'Thank You' to the incredible clinicians, staff, and volunteers at Southlake who saved his life.

Tim and his family have participated in the event in previous years. This year was different, especially for Tim, as he walked in gratitude of everyone who provided him exceptional and compassionate care in November.

After experiencing pain in his lower leg, Tim was diagnosed with a blood clot in Southlake’s Emergency Department, ultimately leading to leg being amputated. Since then, he’s completed rehabilitation and trains multiple times a week at the Magna Centre’s track with his daughter, Charlie, who completed the route alongside him.

“I received phenomenal care, and that’s why I want to support Southlake and the great people who saved my life,” says Tim.

Tim was joined by over 1300 participants at the Nature’s Emporium Run for Southlake on Sunday, April 28, 2024, all running and walking in support of leading edge care, close to home at Southlake.

Southlake Foundation extends a huge THANK YOU to all participants, sponsors, donors, supporters, and volunteers who make this event a success! For information about more upcoming events in support of Southlake, visit: www.southlakefoundation.ca

Tim Greenwood is giving back for life-saving care through the Nature’s Emporium Run for Southlake Partner:

Jim Alexander and participating Newmarket restaurant location owners, along with Southlake Foundation President and CEO Jennifer Ritter, gathered at the Tim Hortons (located at 17725 Yonge Street, Newmarket) to announce that 13 Tim Hortons locations will be supporting the Southlake Foundation in this year's Smile Cookie Campaign that will run from April 29th -May 5th. 100% of proceeds from these special cookies from these 13 participating restaurants (in Newmarket and EG) will be donated to our local hospital.

Stormy

I'm Stormy - a female, 2 year old Pomeranian. I'm a ball of fluff and love! I am super cuddly and love to zoom around. I would do well in a home with dogs and children. I have a history of seizures, therefore my forever family will have to monitor my condition and administer medication. In return, I’ll give you endless love!

Prince

I'm Prince! I'm an 11 year old American Bulldog. I was surrendered when my family could no longer take care of me. I am so intelligent and sweet, and will do just about anything for a tasty treat. Even for a senior gentleman, I thoroughly enjoy going for leisurely walks and adventures in the yard. I would be happiest in a home with no other dogs and someone that does not work long hours.

Oak

Prince

Hi! I’m Oak. I’m a red lab and am turning 6 years old this June. I like long forest walks, digging in the sand and summer boat rides. I am happiest when I’m outside, smelling the smells, visiting my friends and lying in the sun.

Kiki

Hi, I'm Kiki! I am a 2 year old, long-haired Tabby. I love my mom and dad, who rescued me from a very bad situation. One of my favourite things to do is scratch the carpets and furniture. But I do not like chicken, loud noises or Emma... who is staying with us for a little while.

Hi there - I'm Prince. I love long walks, treats and being outside! My favourite foods are chicken feet and mortadella. My owners take me for one hour walks almost every day because they know it makes me happy. I'm such a friendly puppy who loves attention and belly rubs!

Meow! My name is Emma. I am a 7 year old Calico. My grandma is taking care of me for a little while, since my mom is away in England. Grandma tells me that I am stunning. I like chicken, fancy feast treats, catnip, and sitting with grandma and grandpa at night. But I do not like living with Kiki!

A Message From MP Tony Van Bynen

Government budgets identify priorities – the vision of a government, its values and of course spending and revenue forecasts. Budget 2024 –Fairness for Every Generation speaks directly to values and vision. Values such as public health, clean air, and a healthy environment; employment opportunities and a bright future in the green economy are values important to Canadians as are important social programs such as dental benefits, a national school food program and disability benefits. These programs speak to the very nature of what it means to live in Canada.

I have long advocated for a federal disability benefit - a benefit overwhelmingly important to my constituents and to Canadians. A disability benefit cuts across political lines and speaks to the values Canadians believe in, values that define us. The introduction of the Canada Disability Benefit Act is important legislation that when implemented is estimated to increase the financial well-being of over 600,000 low-income persons with disabilities.

I am also a strong believer in a national school food program. Nearly one in four children do not get enough food, and that has a real impact on their opportunities to learn and grow. The National School Food Program is expected to provide meals for more than 400,000 kids each year. Fairness for every generation means making housing affordable for every generation. On April 12, the government released an ambitious plan to build homes by the millions, Solving the Housing Crisis: Canada’s Housing Plan. I encourage you to explore this historic housing initiative: www.infrastructure.gc.ca/housing

Rose of Sharon Services for Young Mothers hosted their annual Diaperama event at Market Brewing on April 12th! Thanks to the community, carloads of diapers were collected to share with the Rose of Sharon young moms and their babies. Community partners Market Brewing Company, Picone Real Estate, Neighbour Media, Smash and Grab Burger Co., and Jesse Karwat & Coin Collection, helped make the event a huge success. Special thanks to the many local businesses who generously donated ra e prizes, which helped to raise money to fund the free services offered by Rose of Sharon to young moms in our community.

Urgent Call for Support: Donate Diapers and Personal Hygiene Items Needed

Are you looking for a meaningful way to make a difference in your community? Look no further! Rose of Sharon urgently needs your help to support pregnant and parenting youth in York Region.

We are facing a critical shortage of diapers for babies in sizes 4, 5, 6, and 7, along with adult shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. These essential items are provided in our Family Care Packages, which are delivered monthly to 150 young mothers in need.

Just like food, the cost of diapers and personal hygiene supplies has soared, making it increasingly di cult for our young moms to make ends meet. Did you know that, on average, a baby goes through anywhere from 90 to 200 diapers in a month? That's a significant expense that many families simply can't afford.

But with your help, we can ensure that every child has access to clean diapers and that every parent feels supported in maintaining personal hygiene. Your donation, no matter how big or small, can make a world of difference to these young families.

To lend a helping hand, please contact Leanne at Rose of Sharon: 905.716.3953 | lknipe@roseofsharon.com. Your generosity will directly impact the lives of those in need.

Neighbour Media is a content -creating and sharing machine that uses videos, pictures and words to help business owners tell their local neighbours who they are and what they sell.

We've developed Digital Direct Mail to be affordable, time-saving, measurable, and effective. We will make your workload lighter, not heavier, by providing clear deliverables, support and reporting.

Next, we'll develop ads that tell your story, highlighting who you are, your testimonials, and your offers to your target audience.

Your campaign will launch, and we'll deliver your ads daily to your chosen audience on Facebook and Instagram, making them visible in feeds, stories, and other ad placements for maximum exposure.

Once your campaign is complete, we will supply a report that details its outcomes and provides insights into your audience.

A Message from MP Leah Taylor Roy

Dear Neighbours,

I am excited to present the key aspects of Budget 2024, titled "Fairness for Every Generation," aimed at fostering an equitable environment where every member of our community can prosper.

This budget introduces ambitious measures to address the critical need for affordable housing. By 2031, we plan to construct 3.87 million new homes by cutting red tape, accelerating development, and creatively utilizing public lands. This strategy will make housing more affordable and provide secure living options for families in Aurora—Oak Ridges—Richmond Hill.

Additionally, Budget 2024 focuses on reducing living costs by enhancing our social safety nets. This includes rolling out $10-a-day childcare, which has already saved families significant amounts annually. We're also expanding healthcare coverage to include essential medications like insulin and contraceptives and introducing comprehensive dental care. These initiatives are vital for easing financial burdens and improving community health. Our economic strategy involves substantial investments in technology and innovation, securing Canada’s position as a leader in artificial intelligence and clean technology. This approach will spur economic growth and job creation in our area, ensuring our economy remains competitive globally.

To ensure economic sustainability and fairness, the budget adjusts capital gains taxation, asking those who have prospered most to contribute a little more. This will help keep inflation down, allow for lower interest rate, and maintain Canada's strong financial position in the world.

As your Member of Parliament, I am dedicated to keeping you informed and engaged with these developments. The enhancements in Budget 2024 are structured to not only meet current needs but also to lay the groundwork for a sustainable and thriving future for all generations in our community.

For more detailed information on how these initiatives will benefit Aurora—Oak Ridges—Richmond Hill, please refer to the back page. I am here to address any questions or concerns and am committed to continuing my service to you.

Warm regards,

Leah Taylor Roy

New Options for First Time Home Buyers

The Federal Government just announced some new incentives to help young Canadians with home ownership:

Increased amortization period for insured mortgages on new builds:

Effective August 1, 2024, the maximum amortization period for new-build properties will be extended to 30 years from the previous 25 years, helping lower monthly payments and provide ease in qualifying. This change applies specifically to insured mortgages with a down payment of less than 20%.

Increase in Home Buyers’ Plan limit:

Starting April 16, 2024, the Home Buyers' Plan limit will be raised from $35,000 to $60,000. This program enables first-time homebuyers to withdraw funds from their Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) tax-free, provided they are used for their first home purchase and are repaid within 15 years. (FHSA balances can also be utilized)

Extension of repayment grace period:

First-time homebuyers who withdraw from their Home Buyers’ Plan between January 1, 2022, and December 31, 2025, will now have a five-year repayment grace period, instead of only two years.

Permanent amortization relief for existing homeowners:

Amendments to the Canadian Mortgage Charter will provide permanent amortization relief for qualifying existing homeowners. While specific details are forthcoming, this relief will target "at-risk" homeowners who meet designated eligibility criteria.

Upper Canada Mall Celebrating 50 Years

This year marks a significant milestone for Upper Canada as we celebrate our 50th Birthday. Since opening our doors on May 1, 1974, with just 55 stores and services, we've witnessed the transformation of both our community and the shopping experience we offer. At the time, Newmarket's population was a modest 22,000. Today, it has soared to over 91,000, reflecting the vibrant growth and dynamic changes within our community. Upper Canada has paralleled this growth, undergoing four major expansions to become the premier shopping destination in York Region with more than 210 stores and services. We pride ourselves on offering a diverse array of the finest fashion, lifestyle, and food brands, ensuring there's something special for everyone who visits.

Neighbourhood Network’s annual Give Back Awards celebrate the outstanding volunteer contributions of graduating students from high schools in Aurora, Georgina, King Township, Newmarket, and Whitchurch-Stouffville. This is the 15th year Neighbourhood Network has honoured the exceptional volunteer achievements of graduating high school students. The evening included light snacks and a recognition ceremony with each student receiving a certificate and a $1,000 cheque.

As we celebrate this incredible 50-year journey, we want to extend our deepest gratitude to you, our community, the heart of Upper Canada. Your continued support and enthusiasm have been instrumental in our success and evolution. To honor this special occasion and to say thank you, we are thrilled to invite you to join us for a weekend of birthday celebrations! Mark your calendars for May 25th and 26th, from 11 am to 5 pm, and head to Market Court for two days filled with joyous birthday festivities, including prizes and surprises that promise to delight.

This celebration is more than just marking a milestone; it's about commemorating our commitment to our community. We're excited about the future and look forward to creating more memorable experiences together. Here's to celebrating 50 years of Upper Canada, and here's to many more!

Transportation with Routes Connecting Communities

Routes has been providing compassionate transportation since 1989. Our fleet of volunteer drivers support residents across York Region to get to their medical appointments, grocery trips, bank visits, and the rest of life’s necessities. Our services support people who cannot, because of their financial, physical, mental, or social challenges, travel by conventional taxi or transit. Eligibility will be assessed during our intake.

There is a modest cost for our services, please contact us for more details. When you book a ride, we arrange a volunteer driver who will take you to your appointment, wait up to two hours, and take you home afterward. Appointments longer than two hours incur a ‘double fare.’

Rides are provided on a first-come-first-served basis, with medical appointments being prioritized above all others. We require 2 business days' notice to book a ride and will do our best to fulfil requests with shorter notice.

Not needing our service? Consider joining us! We are always looking for more volunteer drivers to support our transportation program. Our volunteers are provided with mileage reimbursement, formal and informal recognition, training and professional development opportunities, and capacity building. This is a great way to meet new people, give back to the community, gain self-fulfilment, build your resume, and have fun doing it! For more information, please reach out to info@routescc.org .

MAYOR TAYLOR

Get ready for summer!

With longer days and warmer weather upon us, it’s time to get ready for an incredible summer of fun with family and friends in Newmarket.

Since I was young, I’ve always kicked off Spring with the Town’s cleanup day. Now in its 46th year, the Annual Community Clean-up Day will take place on Saturday, May 4th. Drop by the Farmers’ Market in the Riverwalk Commons to grab a clean-up kit. Then head over to your favourite park or trail and pick up any garbage you find. Leave your full bags by the waste receptacles in the park for Town staff to pick up.

Speaking of the Farmers’ Market, it kicks off its 25th season on May 4. In that time the Market has become a Saturday morning staple for many residents, myself included. We’ve known for a long time, that ours is the best market in the province. This was made o cial earlier this year when Farmers’ Markets Ontario named The Newmarket Farmers’ Market “Market of the Year.” This is a well-deserved and overdue recognition.

Almost everywhere you look there will be opportunities for people to come together and create memories that can last a lifetime. Our parks will soon be filled with the sounds of children playing and friendly competition, as the outdoor sports seasons get underway. Patios will transform sidewalks throughout town coming alive with family and friends enjoying each other company in the fresh air.

May is just the beginning of the summer festivities, we have lots of award-winning events to look forward to in the next few months, including the Canada Day and Pride festivals, the Thursday night Music Series in the Riverwalk Commons, and Moonlight Movies in the parks – you won’t want to miss any of these!

I look forward to seeing you all this summer!

On March 26th, the Central York Chamber of Commerce held the Town of Newmarket's Annual Mayor Luncheon. Breaking Silence and Building Community Takes Leadership

In 2022, with funding from Women and Gender Equality Canada, Abuse Hurts embarked on a project to tackle the barriers faced by women experiencing domestic or intimate partner violence. Our approach was community-based, involving stakeholders at national and regional levels. Through knowledge transfer conferences, surveys, and collaborative product development, we aimed to:

· Increase awareness about intimate partner violence, and its impact on marginalized women.

· Promote equality and equity in early detection and prevention efforts.

· Develop and implement tools for intervention and prevention.

Our engagement with community partners, survivors and experts underscored the importance of prevention, innovative approaches, and community-centered solutions. There was a clear call to make domestic violence a leadership issue, empowering survivors and mobilizing community leaders.

Abuse Hurts is proud to present the tools resulting from this project work including:

· Make a Difference. Be a Leader. Awareness Campaign and Resources: Resources (video, social media cards, tips sheets) designed raise awareness and empower leaders in the community to act against domestic violence.

· Leadership Playlist: Access insightful conference sessions aimed at empowering community leaders to support survivors and address the root causes of domestic and intimate partner violence.

· Applying Trauma-Informed Practices eLearning: An eLearning module providing an overview of trauma-informed care and its application in supporting women who have experienced interpersonal violence.

Together, as community leaders, let's break the silence and build communities where all women are safe and supported. To learn more and access these free resources visit our website today: www.abusehurts.ca/prevention.

The First Church in Newmarket

The Methodists are credited with erecting the first church in Newmarket. In 1824 a two-storey wooden building was erected on the north-east corner of Timothy and Prospect Streets (where Alexander Muir Retirement residence now stands). This area was known then as Garbutt Hill and there is some evidence that suggests the Methodists occupied a log building in the area some years previous.

In 1840 a new church was erected. It contained wooden benches which were replaced in 1856 with box pews. These pews were rented, the income contributing to the preacher’s salary. By 1877, the congregation had grown substantially, and the need for a new church was evident.

In 1879, a new church was erected at the north-west corner of Main Street and Park Avenue and the old church on Prospect Street was demolished. Originally (as in this photo), the church had two front entrances with broad steps leading up to each. The church continued to grow, reflecting the modern changes of the time: In 1889 a pipe organ was installed and in 1903 the church was lit by electricity. By 1908, however, it was evident that the church, particularly the Sunday School, required more space. Plans began for a massive expansion to the existing church. The result was a massive addition to the west, creating a sanctuary with double the seating capacity. The Sunday school was accommodated in the large basement facilities which also included a gymnasium.

In 1925 the Methodist Church entered into a union which resulted in the creation of the United Church of Canada. The Methodist Church of Newmarket evolved into the Trinity United Church, which in 1950 erected a new parsonage to the west. In 1952 the church sanctuary was completely remodeled, including the installation of a new electric pipe organ. Later upgrades included the installation of a new elevator and Christian Education Wing in 1962.

“For the first time in 20 years, and a year after having effectively life-saving surgery, I recently performed in Marquee’s production of The Little Mermaid back in April. As a small trumpet fish in a very big sea, it was definitely an adjustment. Learning all the new best practices and technology changes to the audition and rehearsal process was especially eye-opening. 4 months of rehearsals and a lifetime of new friends have not only helped with my physical recovery, but also brought my soul back to life. Do the hard things, friends. It’s totally worth it! - Rita

How long have you lived in the community?

I’ve lived in the community for 19 years with my husband and kids, but I’ve worked in Aurora for 26 years at A Perfect Pinky.

What are your top 3 favourite movies?

Hard decision!! I would say my top 3 movies would be Little Women ( the Elizabeth Taylor version from the 1940's), My Fair Lady and The Family Stone. Honorable Mention: Ferris Bueller's Day Off!

What is one thing that most people don’t know about you?

I would say most people don't know that I like to do cross stitch. And maybe that I learnt to swim when I was 35.

What A Bagel

For three generations, What a Bagel has been mixing, boiling, dressing, and baking bagels the same way since we switched on our ovens in 1997. It’s what makes us different.

Joseph Farbman, the founder of What A Bagel, believed the recipe for continued success, that was essential to the perfect bagel, is: everything must be made from scratch with natural ingredients, and served fresh straight from the oven.

Besides bagels (that are vegan, too) we serve up mouth-watering pastries from flaky croissants to soft cinnamon buns, as well as a full catering menu filled with light and healthy options.

Step into our bakery & eatery and follow the aroma to baskets of warm bagels and pastries being filled by our ovens around the clock. There’s nothing like the experience and aroma of bagels baking right in front of your eyes, and then served to you fresh for breakfast or lunch!

If you’re looking to relax and enjoy a leisurely meal, many of our locations feature full, family-friendly eateries that are bustling with community regulars. Our sit-down menus have something for everyone, whether you’re an adventurous foodie looking to try the latest avocado-inspired creation, or want to treat the family to something they’ll love.

Our new location in East Gwillimbury is now open! Stop by to taste three generations of bagel and pastry-making!

MR Menswear

The right clothing choices and proper tailoring can accentuate a man’s best features; make him look taller, broader or even thinner. The right style can make a man look more mature, younger and hipper.

Unfortunately, few men have the time or the know-how to build such a wardrobe. Most end up with either a closet full of uncomfortable, unflattering clothes that they don’t wear or a few dated clothing items that they wear all the time. For many men, shopping for new clothes is a dreaded, time-consuming, expensive and frustrating exercise. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

Mike Rathke is a Fashion and Wardrobe Consultant who has spent his entire career helping busy men look their absolute best. After graduating from a College Retail Management Program, Mike started working at a high-end menswear store. While there, he fine-tuned his sense of style and fashion, learned the art of tailoring, and most importantly, the value of excellent customer service.

Recognizing the fact that many of his busy customers simply didn’t have time to come to the mall, Mike began offering house calls. Soon, he was showing merchandise all over the Greater Toronto Area, in private homes, o ces, boardrooms, and even on the golf course. Today, Mike continues to offer men a wide range of quality merchandise at his clothing store, and the convenience of shop at home services.

Stop by the new MR Menswear location to check out the Spring and Summer collections!
