She Shoots She Saves

www.neighbourmedia.ca

@neighbourmedia @neighbouraurora @neighboureastgwillimbury @neighbournewmarket

Over the past 3 years, through their She Shoots She Saves campaign, the Central York Panthers and families have raised over $60 000 and have been able to place nine outdoor SaveStation units in the communities of Newmarket, Aurora, Bradford and Richmond Hill.

The She Shoots She Saves fundraising campaign strives to bring awareness to cardiac health and the importance of public access defibrillators, by placing outdoor AED SaveStations at our community outdoor parks and hockey rinks. The Panthers were inspired to start this campaign after one of our very own Panthers saved a life by performing CPR and using the AED, while timekeeping a hockey game. At the age of 17, she was the only person there that knew what to do!

This year the Central York Panthers have been honoured to be awarded the Community Safety Award from the Town of Aurora and the Awesome Foundation Award from the Newmarket Chamber of Commerce for their tremendous achievements with She Shoots She Saves.

This year they will be starting a new version of the initiative, She Shoots She Saves Play it Forward, where the Panthers challenge other sporting leagues, teams, community leaders, organizations, and local businesses to adopt the She Shoots She Saves concept and help them to place even more outdoor AEDs within the community!

If you would like to be apart of The She Shoots She Saves Plays it Forward campaign and help the Central York Panthers continue to make the community cardiac safe, please reach out to info@cygha.com or info@actionfirstaid.ca #GoodNeighbours

MARCH IS EASTER SEALS MONTH

Each year, Easter Seals Ontario dedicates the month of March to showcasing its programs and services through its March Is Easter Seals Month (MIESM) campaign. The campaign aims to help empower children and youth with physical disabilities, raise awareness regarding their needs and potential, and foster the development of more inclusive communities for all.

During the month of March, Easter Seals will introduce a range of initiatives in the Newmarket/Aurora area over the next few months. These include: The National AccessAbility Week Annual Run, Walk and Roll Founded by Joe Persechini on May 26, 2024, The 1st Annual Red Shirt Classic Golf Tournament at Cardinal Golf Course May 29, 2024, the always anticipated Easter Seals Dancing with the Stars event October 10, 2024 and our Hockey Classic Tournament in November 2024.

Since 1947, the Easter Seals Ambassador Program has been instrumental in raising the voices of children and youth with physical disabilities. In 2024, Easter Seals will reveal its Provincial Ambassadors during this year’s MIESM spokespeople, who will represent the organization throughout the year, advocating on behalf of children with physical disabilities.

Easter Seals offers a wide range of programs and services, including mobility and accessibility equipment funding, accessible summer camps, post-secondary scholarships, youth ambassadors, and advocacy and public awareness. Easter Seals is only able to provide these programs thanks to the generous support of its donors and sponsors.

telMAX Construction Q & A

This month telMAX wants to answer some questions you may have regarding construction in your neighbourhood.

1. When can I expect neighbourhood construction to finish?

The completion of a construction project in your neighbourhood depends on various factors, including permit approvals, weather conditions, and the complexity of conduit placement, especially when dealing with multiple utility crossings. You will receive door hanger communications when work begins in the area! These will include more specific details.

2. Someone dug a hole in my yard/cutout my driveway. Why?

When we install conduits in your area, there might be some landscaping involved. The conduits are crucial for connecting your neighbourhood to the Pure Fibre Network.

To make room for the conduits, we may need to expose existing utilities within a 1-meter radius of the conduit’s path.

You might see paint markings or little flags – they help keep you and our construction team safe and prevent disruptions to your utilities. Please, don't remove any flags you see.

3. I’ve just subscribed to telMAX, but they were unable to dig the frozen ground. When will this get fixed?

We take pride in our restoration of your property and safely burying all the fibre connections to your home.

As soon as the weather cooperates, and the ground has thawed, our full teams will restore your property and bury any remaining winter installation fibres. We know you have more questions, and we’re happy to answer them!

For more information about our construction process, please visit: www.telMAX.com/fibre-rollout, call us at 1-844-4telMAX, or for construction concerns email cc@telMAX.com

On February 15th, Fibre internet service provider, telMAX announced the connection of their inaugural customer in the Town of Aurora, to Canada’s Fastest Internet Service. It was a very snowy day, but CDA Dance Studio owner, Chantel, is now connected to telMAX. Interested in finding out when telMAX will be in your area? visit telMAX.com

Healthcare Closer to Home

Ontario investing $110 million to connect up to 328,000 people to primary care teams.

DAWN GALLAGHER MURPHY

MPP for Newmarket–Aurora Building Our Community Together

A MESSAGE FROM MPP DAWN GALLAGHER MURPHY

905-853-9889

Dawn.GallagherMurphy@pc.ola.org

dawngallaghermurphy MurphyGallagher

Dawn Gallagher Murphy

February brought significant developments in various spheres, marking strides in both public health initiatives and community engagement efforts across our region.

The month began with an announcement regarding the ongoing progress of "Your Health Plan," a cornerstone initiative of our government. Through this investment totaling $110 million, we are set to establish 78 new and expanded interprofessional primary care teams, introducing over 400 additional primary care providers into our healthcare network. This investment is projected to connect 328,000 more Ontarians to essential care teams.

Recently I convened a Labour roundtable, uniting a diverse array of Newmarket-Aurora community stakeholders in a collective effort to support local enterprises through skills development, training programs, and employment services. The month of February serves as a reminder of the importance of inclusivity and cultural celebration, as we commemorate Black History Month. I had the honor of attending the Pan African flag-raising ceremonies hosted by the Towns of Newmarket and Aurora. I also took time to express gratitude to the tireless efforts of our non-profit organizations during Ontario Non-Profit Appreciation Week. It was my pleasure to host an appreciation event, extending heartfelt thanks to more than forty non-profit organizations, our local Community Champions

Earlier I spent a Friday afternoon cooking my signature casserole for individuals at Inn From the Cold's community meal program. This initiative is indispensable, offering warmth and sustenance to our neighbours in need.

In summary, February was marked by significant strides in healthcare enhancements, community engagement, cultural celebration, and nonprofit recognition, emphasizing my commitment to Building our Community Together.

Local student will be heading to Queen's Park! Skye Baker, who attends Stonehaven Elementary School, has been selected to serve as a Legislative Page at the Legislative Assembly of Ontario in Toronto, Spring 2024 Session. During their term of duty, the Page will serve as a messenger on the floor of the Legislative Chamber, meet key parliamentary figures, and learn about Ontario's parliamentary system of government. The Pages term of duty may last from 1 to 5 weeks depending on the parliamentary session. MPP Dawn Gallagher Murphy met with Skye to congratulate her and learn more about her.

On February 9th, to kick off NonProfit Appreciation Week, Dawn Gallagher Murphy MPP Newmarket-Aurora and her team volunteered to cook her signature casserole and serve it to over 60 INN from the Cold clients that use the organization's community meal program. If you would like to support INN from the Cold or learn more about their programs, please visit innfromthecold.ca

BRIGHTER ECONOMIC OUTLOOK: INFLATION EASES!

Rates will come down…

Canada’s latest inflation rate drops to 2.9% for the first time since June 2023, coming in lower than market consensus. The Bank of Canada suggested it would be very di cult to get inflation below 3% and considering mortgage interest is a large factor in this number, this latest reporting is a strong sign for good things to come. The Bank of Canada views this progress positively, setting a cautiously optimistic tone for the economy.

CIBC economists continue to suggest we will see the Bank of Canada start to lower rates in June and can look forward to a 1% to 1.25% ease on interest rates by the end of the year.

We are already seeing the positive effect of these economic indicators bringing fixed term mortgage rates down from their recent high’s and many lenders are becoming more competitive with their offers. If your mortgage is up for renewal this year, be sure to have a mortgage professional help you with your renewal rather than simply signing back the renewal offer. There are a lot of considerations and rate promotions that could save you thousands before your next renewal.

Pumpkin

I'm Pumpkin! I'm very comfortable with other dogs and love to chase and play. I have been placed in an experienced foster home to prepare me for my forever home. My foster parents say that I am a sweet, quiet, well-behaved girl. Outside in the yard, I am playful, have super zoomies, and am a lot of fun. I follow the lead of the other dogs, learn from them, and easily adapt to the rhythm of the household. I am very curious and seek to be around my people, but will need time to feel comfortable with touch and affection.

Hi there, I'm Teddy! My mom says I'm an oldie but goodie. I cannot believe I am 18 turning 19 in November this year! My mom loves me so much. She gives me my favourite treats, cuddles me while she reads or watches tv, and grooms me all the time. I especially love my tummy rubs. Ruff for now… have a good day everyone.

If your pet shows any signs of poisoning, consult your veterinarian immediately!

Woof! Hi - my name is Belle. I’m a Chocolate Lab and I will be celebrating my 12th birthday this month! My favourite thing to do is steal carrots from the farmers field (they're so delicious!) and then sleep all day. My dad says that I am living the dream!

Miley

I'm Camilla, a gentle and sweet girl. I walk nicely on the leash, listen to commands and am super intelligent. I am in need of a family that will help build my confidence and give me the life I have always deserved. I was surrendered to Dog Tales from a kennel, where I was left in deplorable conditions. Due to this, I have moderate hip dysplasia, some changes to my hip bones, some arthritis in my shoulders and an osteophyte in both shoulders. I'm currently on medication daily to help with the inflammation and pain, as well as supplements to help with my mobility.

Hello neighbours! My name is Miley. I am a 4 month old Havapeke. My mom says that I hop around like a little rabbit... and I'm just about the same size as one too. I love my family and my new home! I can't wait to see what else this BIG world has to offer.

Hi there, my name is Tippie! I was orphaned at 4 weeks old, but a wonderful rescue took care of me and at 10 weeks I was adopted! I'm so loved by my new family and I love my forever home. My parents take me to work, so I get to meet lots of amazing people. My life is Sew Perfect!

Tax Season is here!

Tax season is upon us and it is a good opportunity to get your financial affairs in order. Routes Connecting Communities is pleased to be offering free tax filing services for low-income families and individuals in Newmarket. Once again we will be offering drop off, and in-person tax clinics services.

Filing your taxes on time is specifically beneficial to individuals or families on a low income as the Government of Canada and the Province of Ontario provides additional benefits based on the total income. These benefits include Ontario Trillium Benefit, GST/HST Tax Credit, Climate Action Incentive, the Ontario Senior Housing Property Tax Grant, the Canadian Child Benefit, and the Canadian Workers Benefit/Canadian Training Credit and much more.

For the 2022 tax year we completed ninety-two tax returns. Individuals who participated in the Tax Clinics had this to say about their experiences. “This service is wonderful. I learned so much about my own taxes and how I can benefit from this. Other places would not explain what kind of money I get back and they would charge me a lot! So grateful for this service and these volunteers.”

“I am so grateful to have this service available for me. The volunteer explained the purpose of a Disability Tax Credit and how I could benefit from having this. Thank you!”

In honour of this historic year, we’re encouraging all participants to raise a minimum of $100 for Southlake. It’s so easy to do! Connect with family and friends, colleagues and peers to hit your fundraising goal and earn great incentives along the way!

‘Having started my soap business in Aurora in 2007 means that I can manufacture, retail, and private label all my natural products. In 2012, I moved to Industrial Parkway South in a location that allows for retail space as well as manufacturing, giving me a great opportunity for several reasons... Aurora is a thriving community with a strong local economy, making it an ideal location for retail businesses. The demand for high-quality, locally made products is on the rise, and customers in Aurora and surrounding areas appreciate and support local retailers. The concept of private label allows companies to create their own unique brand and differentiate themselves from competitors giving them a competitive edge in the market. Overall, being in Aurora provides the perfect combination of a supportive community and a growing market demand. Thank you, Aurora!’

BILAL'S OTF TRANSFORMATIVE JOURNEY

Transformation; a dramatic change in thought, appearance and or feeling.

Going to Orangetheory Newmarket – Aurora has transformed my appearance, thought and feeling about working out to the point where if I do not come in one day I feel disconnected.

Su ering from weight issues for the majority of my life Orangetheory had come in like a saviour. The workout consists of an equal amount of cardio and weight training, helping to not only lose weight/fat but also build muscle in the process.

Having lost over 120+ pounds, feeling better about myself and the food I eat - I cannot recommend Orangetheory enough. I would like to take the opportunity to thank The Lord for giving me the ability to attend such a great community filled with support and motivation.

Thank you to Joe, Chris, Matt, Ricky, Ryan, Michelle, Karlie, Izzy and to all the OTF sta for having such a facility which helps people like me believe there is hope, support and motivation that even after being around 300 pounds there is always room to start and join the community. Now I ask you, heading into this new year, how many of you want to change your lives?

On January 31st, at York Regional Police HQ in Aurora, Premier Doug Ford, Minister Dominic LeBlanc, Minister Arif Virani, MP Leah Taylor Roy, MP Tony Van Bynen, MP Francesco Sorbara, Solicitor General of Ontario Michael Kerzner, and Chief of York Police Jim MacSween gathered to announce that our federal government is investing $121 million through Public Safety Canada’s Initiative to Take Action Against Gun and Gang Violence (ITAAGGV)

CLCY - Celebrating 70 Years

70 years ago, a small group of parents came together to discuss what could be done to provide schooling for their children who had a developmental disability.

What began as a volunteer organization evolved into the Community Living Central York (CLCY) that we know today. The original vision of supporting those with a developmental disability to achieve their fullest potential has not changed over 70 years.

CLCY now supports over 750 individuals and their families with day, evening and weekend programs, respite for families, community living supports (15 homes), support independent living (40 individuals), and associate family program for those who reside in Whitchurch Stouffville, Aurora, East Gwillimbury, and Newmarket. In addition, we have partnered with over 40 employers in York Region and provide employment skills training to individuals, so they are prepared for the workforce. We have a long-standing history of stability, impact, and support in our communities, and we are committed to removing barriers to ensure inclusion.

The last 70 years has been filled with stories of resilience, growth, and compassion, made possible by the dedication of our staff, volunteers, and supporters. As we reflect on our past achievements, we're also energized to continue our mission, evolving and innovating to meet the changing needs of those we support.

As we celebrate this milestone, we are grateful for each individual, organization, and partner who has contributed to our journey. Here's to 70 years of collaboration, resilience, and community spirit - and to the boundless possibilities that lie ahead!

Shoutout to Mayor Taylor and the Newmarket Council for hosting an incredible New Year's Levee event, that took place on February 2nd at Riverwalk Commons! The community gathered for free skating, sweet treats, live music, as well as fire and ice shows.

Keep up the good work!

I want to take a moment to celebrate all that you do to make Newmarket a great place to live, raise a family, and grow a business. As much as we focus on grand achievements and exceptional people, we also can’t forget the impact of the everyday. The future of our community and economy in large part is shaped by the day-to-day decisions we all make, large and small.

Whether you realize it or not, many of the actions you take help to build a stronger Newmarket. Choosing to shop local, trying the new restaurant, donating to charity, volunteering for a local cause, getting your kids to school and their games, coaching a team, taking in community theatre and artists’ exhibits, helping a neighbour or friend, even something as simple as saying ‘hi’ to a stranger, all of these have the potential to foster connections that are the most basic building blocks of our community.

I am amazed by how your daily activity helps to make Newmarket a better place. Let’s dial that up. Help those less fortunate, share your love of sports and games with the next generation, welcome those new to town, and support small businesses. All this has a ripple effect beyond the moment. These actions, repeated, create a sense of connection, support future investment, spread kindness, and can leave a legacy of empathy, resilience, and solidarity.

Thanks for making Newmarket great! Let’s keep making it better every day.

Spring, beginning in March, is a captivating season that brings longer days, blooming flowers, and a sense of rejuvenation. It symbolizes optimism, growth, and the anticipation of warmer days ahead.

In addition to its natural beauty, March is also a month filled with diverse cultural expressions and festivities. From St. Patrick's Day to Nowruz, Easter to Passover, these holidays provide us with the perfect opportunity to renew our traditions and connect with our loved ones, friends, and communities.

Furthermore, Easter and Passover hold special significance for many as they gather to share traditional meals and create lasting memories. The sight of children participating in Easter egg hunts brings a sense of closeness and unity to our neighbourhoods. Similarly, St. Patrick's Day is a joyous occasion celebrated worldwide, where everyone dresses in green and embraces the Irish spirit.

And Nowruz, marking the Persian New Year, is a significant celebration as loved ones set up Haft seen tables, prepare delicious dishes, and gather to welcome

spring. For everyone who celebrates Nowruz, it represents new beginnings and a chance to reflect on the past year with gratitude while looking ahead to the future.

March is not only a time of cultural celebration but also a reminder of the ongoing pursuit of social progress and justice. International Women's Day, celebrated on March 8th, symbolizes the collective struggle for gender equality and recognizes the remarkable achievements of women throughout history.

To everyone in our community, Happy Easter, Happy Nowruz, Have a blessed Passover, Happy International Women's Day, and Happy St. Patrick's Day! May your celebrations be filled with joy and meaning.

What is your favourite food?

Owner/Elite Hair Designer at Tangles Hair Salon in Holland

Definitely chocolate! It really is an addiction like coffee for some people. I need it to manage my day.

If you were a superhero, what would your powers be, and why?

The ability to clone myself! One clone could be at home with my kids and the other at the salon. I would be able to accomplish so much if there were 2 of me.

How do you give back or pay-it-forward within the community?

I'm an author of a column called "Who Gives....East Gwillimbury?" showcasing inspiring stories in our community. I hosted and organized the East Gwillimbury Women's Show and was able to donate $100,000 to Southlake Cancer Centre. We host open house events in the salon that raise money for Southlake and every year we pick a local sports team to sponsor.

If you could have dinner with one person, dead or alive, who would it be?

It's a tie... Taylor Swift is currently one of the most influential people in the world and my daughter being a "Swiftie" would think that was amazing. Winn Claybaugh is a philanthropist, the author of "Be Nice Or Else!" and has interviewed over 325 beauty and business professionals with his podcast Masters series.

What is your favourite holiday to celebrate?

Christmas! My life is usually organized chaos and always go go go go go. Christmas is the perfect time to spend time to slow down and take a moment to enjoy the company of my family.

Brian North

Chair, Nature’s Emporium Run for Southlake Committee

How long have you lived in the community?

I have lived in Aurora for almost 40 years and York Region for about 45.

How do you give-back or pay-it-forward within the community?

This is my 15th year working with the Nature’s Emporium Run for Southlake team. I am also Chair of the Rebuild Committee for the Aurora United Church, a Member of the Aurora Optimist Club, Noble Grand of The Oddfellows Aurora Lodge 148, and am a member of the Organizing Committee of the Aurora Whiskey Society, helping to raise funds for various organizations.

Where is your favourite place to go in the community?

To pick one favourite place in our community that I enjoy visiting would be hard. We live in a community with so much going on year-round, and I enjoy being a part of the community at large.

What is your go-to local restaurant?

When we go out for meals, we frequent different restaurants but if I had to pick a favourite, I would pick the Keg.

What is one thing that most people don’t know about you?

I'm a fairly open book and have little to share that people don't already know. Who I am today is because of the great friends that I have had the pleasure of meeting through volunteering in our community.

Sheila Stewart

Sales Representative - Main Street Realty Ltd Brokerage

How long have you lived in the community?

We have lived in Newmarket for 29 years. Over the years we have moved many times around town, but eventually found our forever home in Historic Newmarket.

What is one thing that most people don’t know about you?

I grew up on a pheasant farm in Caledon East. We also had many other animals including horses, goats, peacocks, ducks, chickens, guinea hens, dogs and cats. Being the oldest of three it was my responsibility to help with all the farm chores before and after school.

If you could give advice to your younger self, what would it be?

Invest in real estate as soon as you can. The markets can go up and down but in the long run you will come out ahead.

What is your favourite season (winter, spring, summer, fall), and why?

I'm a summer baby, and I love spending time in the sunshine. We love walking around Fairy Lake, and going to pet friendly patios. We also love to spend time at our trailer at Musselman's Lake.

How do you give back or pay-it-forward within the community?

We have hosted many community events including, Meet the Easter Bunny, Meet Santa, Ghost Walk, and the Distinguished Gentleman's Ride 2023. We love bringing our community together, as well as attending events to support our growing and vibrant town.

Abuse Hurts Champion of the Month

Since International Women’s Day is on March 8, Abuse Hurts is aptly naming the Bradford Women's+ Group as its champion of the month. The group embraced Abuse Hurts’ "Handbags of Hope'' initiative and, as a result, contributed 314 filled purses toward the campaign!

For the month of November, 2023, the Bradford Women's+ Group partnered with 16 local businesses and community groups who were willing to host donation boxes where purse donations could be collected. Additionally, they enlisted the help of individuals to assist in running the campaign, which culminated in a fabulous purse-packing-party on Dec. 3.

The campaign saw the collection of gently used or new handbags and essential items to fill them with such as toiletries, beauty products, personal hygiene items, gift cards, and a lot more.

The handbags were then delivered to Abuse Hurts and then distributed to women affected by domestic abuse through local shelters and agencies.

The purse drive made such a positive impact on the many mothers who came to collect toys for their children in December. They were surprised and delighted to receive a purse for themselves that was filled with lots of ‘goodies’. Any left over purses get handed out to women in shelters throughout the year while supplies last.

The Bradford Women’s+ Group boasts incredible leadership, is well-organized and passionate to empower all women. With motivation and drive, they stirred their town into action changing many lives for the better. We are so grateful for their motivation, drive, friendly smiles and huge hearts

This day is a powerful reminder of the progress we've made and the work that remains in achieving gender equality. Stuart Scott School

As Newmarket’s population grew significantly during the early twentieth century, the need for a second public school on the “west” side of town became apparent.

Prior to Stuart Scott School, King George School was constructed at the corner of Park Avenue and Church Street in 1912, replacing an earlier public school. On the east side of town was Alexander Muir School. A second school on the east side of town, Prince Charles would be later built in the 1950’s, and the same decade saw the construction of a second school on the west side, named J.L.R. Bell.

On May 21, 1923, a decision was formally made to construct a new school on Lorne Avenue, just north of Eagle Street. It was also proposed that the new school be named after Dr. Stuart Scott, long-time school board member and local physician.

Oliver Trench was hired as the architect, and Richardson Construction was hired as the builders. The Town also agreed to investing in infrastructure surrounding the new school. This included the construction of new sidewalks and the grading of Lorne Avenue.

This new school would contain three small administrative rooms (principal’s o ce, storeroom, and staff room), six classrooms, and three rooms on each of the two floors. In the basement there would be two playrooms, one for boys and one for girls.

On August 18, 1923, the cornerstone was laid by Sir William Mulock and Prime Minister William Lyon McKenzie King. The exterior would feature red brick walls with stone facings over the west and south entrances.

The school has undergone two major additions, in 1954 and again in 1964 due to the increased population of Newmarket. For a long time King George School was used for the first few years of public school and then students transferred to Stuart Scott School for the remaining years prior to high school. J.L.R. Bell School, had a similar relationship with Stuart Scott as the senior public school students also went to the Lorne Avenue school prior to high school.

With King George School now a residential development, Alexander Muir School demolished in the late 1970’s, Stuart Scott School has the distinction of being Newmarket’s oldest public school still in use in its original building.

Last year the school celebrated its 100th anniversary with a celebration including presentations and participation from both current and former students.

The Town of Aurora Family Day Arctic Adventure at the Town Park did not disappoint! It was a full day of interactive shows including Speaking of Wildlife, Great Canadian Lumberjacks, The Fire Guy, and Zoe Stardust. There was also mini-snow tubing, top-shot hockey, and ice carvings. The Aurora Optimist Club was firing up the BBQ, making hamburgers and hotdogs, or you could also head into the Armoury for a delicious meal!

Located in the St. Andrew’s Plaza, Lemonberry inspires women to feel beautiful and embrace a mindful, minimalist approach to their lifestyle - incorporating a collection of high-quality clothing, non toxic beauty products and lifestyle brands that align with our eco-conscious values and that are created with integrity. Our mission is to change the way women look at fashion and shift their approach to be more eco-aware.

Lemonberry is a eco-conscious women's boutique, a place where women can go and feel supported and fulfilled in all areas of their lives - home, clothing, food, lifestyle & beauty. Lemonberry created a movement that embraces minimalism and all things sustainable and good for the earth.

Lemonberry Owner Lisa Simmons is a mom of two, but aside from family, her two greatest loves are fashion & travel. She opened Lemonberry in February 2004 and is celebrating 20 years in business this year!

Lisa is inspired by NYC street urban looks and loves to travel to NYC and pick out styles and looks she can replicate in the store. In 2013, her dad passed away and that changed her entire philosophy on life. She came to the realization that life wasn't only about working to make money. She became more eco-aware and saw the destruction that fashion was causing in the world, wanting to do her part to change that. Lemonberry is now going in the direction of eco-conscious, non-toxic, sustainable & with an emphasis on Canadian products.
