From Pioneering Female Sportscaster to Community Supporter, Teresa Kruze is very proud of the fourteen years she worked at TSN. Starting out in her hometown of Calgary, she covered the 1988 Winter Olympics and the Calgary Flames 1989 Stanley Cup win for TSN, then she was promoted to Toronto in 1990. Over the years she anchored SportsDesk (now called SportsCentre) and covered numerous World Championships, Stanley Cup runs, Olympic Games and the Toronto Blue Jays two World Series wins. After leaving TSN, she went on to work at 680News, CP24, CityTV, OMNI, and YesTV working in their news departments and producing several talk shows and documentaries. Today, she runs a Media Strategy and Video Production Company. Along with her husband Gary and two furry pals, Finnegan and Daisy, Teresa has called Newmarket home for the last twenty-two years. She is a longtime volunteer with Newmarket based Abuse Hurts, honouring the memory of her courageous late brother-in-law Martin Kruze. Teresa became a senior leader of the Newmarket Youth Leadership Group in 2019 and is also a member of the Community Liaison Committee for “62 Bayview”, a project that will help address the significant need for housing in York Region. “We’ve seen tremendous growth in our area since we arrived in 2001”, says Kruze. “Newmarket and Aurora form such a beautiful, vibrant region filled with community events, arts and music with nature trails joining the fabric of our towns together. How lucky are we to live in such a special place and call it home?”

The Salonrepreneur Revolution: Beauty Unleashed

In recent years, there has been a remarkable rise in personal care studios and the emergence of a new breed of entrepreneurs known as "salontrepreneurs." These individuals recognized the growing demand for personalized and specialized beauty and wellness services and are capitalizing on the opportunity.

A salontrepreneur possesses the drive, creativity, and business acumen to establish and manage their own salon or personal care studio. They are not only skilled in providing beauty or wellness services but also possess the ambition and vision to create a unique and successful business model.

Salontrepreneurs offer personalized experiences, a welcoming atmosphere, and current industry trends to attract and retain clients. They leverage their passion, knowledge, and entrepreneurial mindset to build a thriving business in the beauty and personal care industry.

Personal care studios offer a more intimate and tailored experience compared to traditional salons, focusing on specific areas such as hair, nails, makeup and skin care. Salontrepreneurs’ studios are suited for those seeking a break from larger establishments so they can provide their services in a space where clients receive personalized care. The rise of personal care studios and the salontrepreneur movement is a testament to the increasing importance placed on self-care and the desire for personalized experiences in today's fast-paced world

Letter from MAYOR MRAKAS

Happy Pride Month, Aurora!

Every year I am thrilled to proclaim June as Pride Month in the Town of Aurora as we celebrate what makes Aurora so special – its people.

The Town of Aurora takes pride in our diversity and celebrates our differences. We work hard to ensure that people with diverse views, feelings, gender identity and culture all feel welcome and accepted in our community. But that work is always ongoing, and Pride Month serves as an acknowledgement of both the

strides and the struggles faced by LGBTQ2S+ community members.

This month, we will once again be raising the Pride Flag at Town Hall, an annual tradition that stands for unity, love and respect for all. Be sure to save the date and join us on Monday, June 5 at 1 p.m. for the Flag Raising Ceremony!

Later this month, on June 17, I’ll be joining members of Council and Town staff to march in the York Pride Parade in Newmarket and look forward to seeing you there. It is always a great time and our Bylaw vehicle is getting its annual rainbow makeover, so look for it at the Parade and around Town throughout the month!

This summer our rainbow crosswalk at Yonge and Wellington – the first in York Region – will also be getting a refresh to ensure it continues to shine bright in our downtown core, a permanent symbol of our commitment to creating an inclusive and welcoming community for all.

Lastly, I want to thank all our residents and Town staff who each and every day help us ensure that Aurora is a town open to everyone.

Happy Pride Month to all!

The 59th Annual Aurora Art Show presented by Society of York Region Artists (SOYRA) took place at Aurora Town Hall on May 6th & 7th. The show included 300 pieces of art from 150 artists! Congratulations to all the winning artists.

Dealing with Jessica has been a pleasure. She’s kind, well-spoken and straightforward. I look forward to future business dealings with her! -

Jessica is gifted in what she does, and I will be recommending her to friends/family who are in the market for mortgages/loc's etc. She was there, from beginning to end, providing my husband and I valuable insight, options, and sound advice. Jessica really cares and demonstrated that by providing my husband and I a tailored mortgage solution specific to our needs. She is a wealth of knowledge and an awesome individual to have on your side. -

Jessica was a pleasure to work with - she was extremely professional and took all the stress and worry out of the financing process. I appreciated her personal touch, care, patience and ability to clearly and concisely communicate all the aspects I couldn't wrap my head around. Her honesty, integrity, and joyful nature was a breath of fresh air. -

Jessica cares, need I say more. In this day and age everyone seems self-absorbed with the bottom line they miss the importance of service, heart, empathy and care…Jessica is someone you want in your corner! -

Working with Jessica was a wonderful experience! She provides the fastest response and professional service we ever have. Jessica goes above and beyond with her customer service as well as her follow-up. She explained everything we were signing and going over, in terms that we totally understood. She was such a personable person to deal with. We were very pleased with the experience with Jessica and would highly recommend her to anyone with mortgage needs. -

NEW PARK OFFERS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE!

Allegro in downtown Aurora offers families a refined lifestyle surrounded by nature. Soon, area residents will be able to enjoy the new 21.3-acre community park. The park, which has yet to be named, is the result of collaboration between Geranium, Town representatives and neighbours to design an amenity offering a variety of passive uses for many age groups. Prior to implementing the final park plan, Geranium set out to reinstate the Tannery Creek system to its original natural condition with a healthier ecosystem. Previous owners of the property modified these creeks causing temperatures to rise resulting in a decrease in their functioning habitats. Working with the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority, native fish were removed while realignment work proceeded, then returned to the creeks where they are now re-establishing in the improved habitat. A significant tree preservation plan and planting of hundreds of trees, shrubs and vegetation contribute to the park’s beautiful environment. The park includes junior and senior playgrounds, bridge connections, new trails connecting to the existing system, wetlands, ponds, a meditation circle, trail signage and benches with Bench Fit signage.

Allegro is a master-planned community of 157 exceptional single family detached residences being built in phases. Geranium is proud to be a 2023 BILD finalist in the category of Best New Community (Planned) for Allegro. To learn more about available homes and the community visit www.geranium.com/aurora-allegro

ONTARIO is building the first urban provincial park in the trail capital of Canada

As I approach the first-year anniversary of becoming the Member of Provincial Parliament for Newmarket-Aurora, I have been reflecting on the things I have learned from legislative procedures, my role as the Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Health, as well as the two- Standing Committees on which I sit.

Appreciating the significance of these roles, my favourite experiences over this past year have been my time spent in our community. From meeting with local businesses, visiting with non-profit organizations, enjoying time at a local restaurant, speaking with the owner, staff, and patrons, to participating in the numerous events our community holds to celebrate various occasions, I thrive on learning and supporting our community. This, to me, is what it means to be your MPP, to be of service and advocate as your representative for Newmarket—Aurora.

Honoured to have recently made announcements of our government’s funding to three local non-profits through the Ontario Trillium Foundation Resilient Communities Fund grant. Marquee Theatrical Productions received a $145,000 grant to help ensure the sustainability of their School. CAYR Community Connections received a $12,900 grant to help them build their strategic plan for the coming years and I look forward to learning what good things CAYR will continue to accomplish for our community members. Newmarket African Caribbean Canadian Association (NACCA) received a $167,100 grant to further their mental health literacy, advocacy, and healing support network for Black youth. Since 2020, this Fund grant has supported Ontario’s economic recovery by helping non-profit organizations rebuild and recover from the impacts of COVID-19.

On May 1st, MPP Dawn Gallagher Murphy met with the team at the Newmarket African Caribbean Canadian Association (NACCA) to hear more about the $167,100 Resilient Communities Grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF). With this invaluable funding, NACCA will continue to deliver on its five-year strategic plan, evaluate and scale-up current programs and services, seek and develop staff and volunteers to meet present and future programming needs, and manage the day-to-day expansion of operational needs as NACCA continues to grow.

Dawn Gallagher Murphy, MPP Newmarket -Aurora, welcomed the U14AA and U16AA Newmarket Renegades into her constituency o ce and presented each player with a congratulatory scroll, celebrating their championship wins!

Letter from MAYOR TAYLOR

Music that brings us together

We just announced the lineup for this Summer's TD Music Series at the Riverwalk Commons. It’s a little country, a little rock and roll, and promises to be a lot of fun. With music from the past eight decades, including the Stones,

Beatles, Springsteen Aretha, and Shania, as well as local musicians opening each show, there is something for almost everyone.

Live music is great and it is somehow even better outdoors. Shared experiences like these concerts are a great way to come together and it's part of how we build a sense of belonging and a strong community.

It all kicks off on July 6. Join us, sing along with your favorite tunes –unleash your inner rock star – and check out the local talent.

Thanks to the Town's Events team and TD Bank for making this music series a reality. Thanks also to Mercedes Benz for again offering the backstage lounge.

Hope to see you there!

telMAX continues restoration efforts this month

telMAX has been working diligently to build vital infrastructure throughout the Town of Newmarket and is continuing to focus on restoration efforts to all affected properties.

Our construction crews are busy creating a reliable 100% fibre optic network in underserviced areas, allowing residents to make use of high-speed, affordable internet. During the construction process in the winter, crews began laying conduit and installing fibre on many streets. In the process, local lawns and driveways were affected as our crews dug up certain areas and temporarily patched them to avoid safety concerns.

Most of the winter restoration work has been completed in May but crews continue to visit affected areas to bring lawns and driveways back to pre-construction condition. This includes permanently patching up all holes in driveways and lawns as well as laying down grass seed. To help with this restoration work, we ask residents to water the affected lawn areas to help the grass get established and take root.

As Canada’s fastest internet provider, telMAX is committed to strengthening the communities we serve through our customer-centric approach. We’ve established a local o ce in Newmarket to better support the community. Residents who would like to learn more about our restoration or construction processes can reach us at 1-844-4telMAX or email cc@telMAX.com.

Ariana Laxdal, the Events Manager for Old Flame Brewery in Newmarket presented a cheque to Ellen Campbell, Founder of Abuse Hurts, on May 8th. The money was raised through various charitable events recently held at Old Flame.

Abuse Hurts’ Champion of the Month for June is Downsizing Diva. For many years, Arlene Stephenson of Downsizing Diva has been supporting Abuse Hurts with donations of furniture, housewares and home décor items, as well as volunteering her own time in assisting with sorting and assigning donated items in the Abuse Hurts warehouse. We love situations where mutual needs are met and our relationship with Downsizing Diva has provided a solution for both our clients and theirs! We also appreciate the opportunity in helping to reduce, re-use and recycle when finding new homes for downsized items.

Since 2009, Downsizing Diva has been the move management experts that help seniors and their families deal with the challenge of moving from a family home to a condo, retirement residence or care community. Downsizing Diva can help with any or all aspects of a move from pre-move preparation (sort, organize, downsize and pack) to move day logistics (managing the movers, unpacking and setting up the new home) and post-move wrap-up (ensuring the former home is ready for the new owners).

While working on clients' projects, Downsizing Diva provides care, compassion and the time to share a story and a smile.

Arlene Stephenson, a long-time York Region resident, is passionate about supporting her community and is proud to be a corporate partner to The Canadian Centre for Abuse Awareness (Abuse Hurts), in support of women, children and victims of abuse across Canada.

Accessing the world outside our homes

The sun is shining, the flowers are blooming, and the fresh spring/summer air is calling our name to come outside! Part of our passion here at Homestead Oxygen + Medical Equipment is getting people where they want to go! We are here to break down barriers to accessing the world outside of our homes.

Do you have stairs going in and out of your home? Did you know there is a quick and easy solution to get in and out of your home safely? Installing a vertical platform lift will allow you to make your way out of your home at the touch of a button. The vertical platform lift can accommodate yourself as well as any mobility devices you may have including heavy power operated equipment. With the warmer months upon us getting out of our homes and into the community is more desired than ever.

Having a folding portable power wheelchair makes participating and attending events a breeze. We are proud to carry the travel buggy in store and have it available for trial. Another great option is a mobility scooter. A mobility scooter can get you from point A to point B and everything in between. With various sizes and models there is a scooter for everyone, we have multiple options in our shown room waiting for you to come and take for a test drive.

Homestead Oxygen + Medical Equipment is your local accessibility and home medical equipment supplier. Please contact us for more information at 905-895-6363 or newmarket@homesteadoxygen.ca and one of our trained consultants will be happy to help you!

NEIGHBOURHOOD Charity Highlight

How do we ensure Newmarket continues to be the best place to live and work in Canada? It starts with Awesome ideas. The Awesome Foundation Newmarket is a group that provides monthly, hassle-free micro grants to help bring those ideas to life.

Rather than a charity, the Awesome Foundation is like a giving circle. Ten trustees give $100 of their own money each month to help an individual or group implement a great idea that benefits and supports local youth in Newmarket.

We accept a variety of idea submissions from people of all ages. No idea is too small, and those that promote fun are just as important as those with a more serious focus. The Trustees review the submissions each month and vote for the winner who will receive the $1000 cash that month. No receipts necessary - so you do not have to be a charity to apply.

This is a group of community minded-individuals coming together to highlight, appreciate and donate to an initiative that makes our ‘neighbourhood’ better!

We are in our 11th year of being Awesome and have donated $150,000 to date! We attempt to give $1000 a month. But in month’s where we don’t have any applicants, we carry those donations forward to the next month and will sometimes give two grants in one month.

Recipients over the past 3 years include:

• Blue Door

• Cedar Centre

• Fueling Young Bodies and Minds

• NACCA - Food Security Program

• Doane House Children’s Art Grief Workshop
