St. John’s Parish (for Newmarket and area) was opened as a mission in 1841.
In 1838 the idea of erecting a Roman Catholic Church in Newmarket was raised, however, the small population didn’t warrant it. Prior to the potato famine in Ireland of 1847, Newmarket had a very small population of Roman Catholics. The issue was raised the following year, with new immigration, and the decision was made to build a Roman Catholic Church in Newmarket. The first church was erected on the north side of Ontario Street (just west of Main Street) in 1841. A graveyard was established immediately east of it (remains of the entrance way to this cemetery still exist). It wasn’t long before Newmarket’s first separate school was established in the church basement.
The congregation soon outgrew the small church building. A new cemetery, also christened St. John’s) was established north of town on Main Street North (still in operation at 250 Main St. North.)
In1874 a new church, “St. John Chrysostom Church” was erected (pictured). It was built immediately west of the original church. In 1882 a new separate school building was erected –St. John’s school. By the 1970s the old church could no longer support the needs of the large Newmarket Roman Catholic congregation and in 1977 the old church was torn down.
A new church was constructed on the south side of Ontario Street which still stands today. Less than ten years after it first opened its doors, however, the new St. John’s could not accommodate the growing population of Catholics in Newmarket and area, so plans for St. Elizabeth Seton Parish (on Leslie Street) began in the fall of 1986 under Father Matthew Robbertz.
On November 24, 1991, the congregation of St. Elizabeth Seton proudly participated in the Solemn Blessing and Mass of Dedication of their new church.

Bandwidth, Download Speed, Upload Speed, and Symmetrical Speed - Explained!
In this month’s edition, we want to help people understand what makes up “bandwidth”, what the “download” speed is, and what the “upload speed is – and why it is important to get a connection that offers high values of both.
What is “bandwidth” and what is “speed”?
Bandwidth is how much information your network can receive every second. Speed is how fast the information is received or downloaded. Speed is further broken down into “download” and “upload” speeds.
What is “download” speed used for?
The download speed is what determines how much data can be pulled from a server to your device – the higher the available download speed, the more data that can be received at any moment. A high download speed is what allows for websites to load quickly, streaming to be done without buffering, and downloading large files to be quick.
What is “upload” speed used for?
The upload speed is what determines how much data can be sent from your device to the Internet – the higher the available upload speed, the more data that can be sent at any given moment. A high upload speed is what will allow for things such as uploading videos to social media, video conferencing (such as Teams Skype and Zoom), data backups, and file sharing to be done quickly and seamlessly. Traditional forms of Internet may provide a high download speed but will often have a much lower upload speed.
What is a “symmetrical” speed?
A “symmetrical” speed is the term used when the download speed and the upload speed is the same – ex. telMAX’s Limitless 1.5Gbps (1.5Gbps download AND 1.5Gbps upload speed).
In a lot of cases, only true fibre optic Internet will offer symmetrical speeds as traditional Internet is limited by the limitations of the copper or coaxial cables that make up large portions of its infrastructure.
telMAX is proud to offer symmetrical packages on our 100% pure fibre optic network!

I'm Hershel! A unique guy that will be sure to keep you smiling. I was surrendered when my owner could no longer care for me. I have a big appetite and a wiggly, happy bum. I'm strong and a burst of energy! I love long walks, zooming around and doing tricks for treats. I am quickly learning my leash manners and working on my reactivity. I am looking for someone that will be dedicated to continuing my training - a caregiver that can bring some calmness and routine into my life.

We're Rosie and Pedro, and we are as sweet and cuddly as we look! A mother and son unbreakable duo, who are looking for a family with a BIG heart. We came from a farm where we never had the chance to live in a home. We went from sleeping outdoors in dirt, to curling up on plush dog beds at Dog Tales - and are loving it! Rosie is very confident and will say hi to just about everyone. Pedro is a little more reserved but once he's comfortable he is very affectionate. We would be happiest in a house with a yard.
Hello! My name is Daisy and I am a Goldendoodle. I love all people and all other dogs. I’m only two months old, so I get very excited when I see anyone when I’m out for a walk. When I have the zoomies my family calls me crazy Daisy, but after a long walk, I’m lazy Daisy.
Hi friends - I'm Hudson. I just turned 3 on May 21st! My mom was rescued from the Alberta wild fires a few years back, and then I found my forever home with my family here! I love them so much. I love to dig holes in my dad's fresh grass and never say no to an ice cube. I'm also a big fan of my baby brother Harrison's little socks! I also enjoy napping - unless my fur friends are around... then it's play time!
Hi there, my name is Parker! I am a 180lb St. Bernard, Newfoundlander cross. I recently walked around the Farmer's Market with my dad and he bought me this new bone! I love my dad. I love my new bone. I love my walks... but not when I have a new bone. I just want to sit all day long and chomp on my bone!
Hi, my name is Spartacus! I am a Juliana potbelly big, I live at Sweet Acres Pig Sanctuary, and I will be 7 on July 22nd. I love cucumbers and watermelon, belly rubs and being brushed. I am one of the kindest, most gentle potbelly pigs and therefore I am used as a therapy pig. My best friend is Noah, and my other roommates are Wellington and Cardi P. I recently became a movie star, shooting in an upcoming Hallmark movie... be sure to keep an eye out for my debut!
Are you looking for a meaningful way to make a difference in your community? Look no further! Rose of Sharon urgently needs your help to support pregnant and parenting youth in York Region.
We are facing a critical shortage of diapers for babies in sizes 4, 5, 6, and 7, along with adult shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. These essential items are provided in our Family Care Packages, which are delivered monthly to 150 young mothers in need.
Just like food, the cost of diapers and personal hygiene supplies has soared, making it increasingly di cult for our young moms to make ends meet. Did you know that, on average, a baby goes through anywhere from 90 to 200 diapers in a month? That's a significant expense that many families simply can't afford.
But with your help, we can ensure that every child has access to clean diapers and that every parent feels supported in maintaining personal hygiene. Your donation, no matter how big or small, can make a world of difference to these young families.
To lend a helping hand, please contact Leanne at Rose of Sharon: 905.716.3953 | lknipe@roseofsharon.com. Your generosity will directly impact the lives of those in need.

As we step into the vibrant month of June, I am thrilled to extend a warm invitation for you to join in the festivities that celebrate the diversity of our community. June isn't just any ordinary month; it's a time of reflection, appreciation, and celebration for multiple reasons close to our hearts.
The community was charged up on April 28th at Aurora's third annual Electric Vehicle Showcase! Attendee's could test drive, analyze and compare the latest electrical vehicles and charging solutions. It was a day filled with electrifying experiences, education, and entertainment, all centered around the future of transportation.
Firstly, let's kick the month off with June being Parks and Recreation Month, JPRM. Our parks and recreation centres and programming are the beating heart of our city, offering sanctuary, recreation, and joy to all who visit. This month let's pledge to spend more time outdoors and be active! Find out all the things happening in celebration of JPRM at
June is also Indigenous History Month, a time to honour the stories, achievements, and resilience of Indigenous Peoples, who have lived on this land since time immemorial and whose presence continues to impact an evolving Canada. I encourage you to take part in events and activities that celebrate Indigenous culture, whether it's attending a storytelling session, participating in a traditional dance workshop, or simply learning more about the history of the land we call home. Find out more at: aurora.ca/IndigenousPeoples.
And let's not forget Pride Month! This is a time to stand in solidarity with our LGBTQ2S+ community members, celebrating love, acceptance, and equality. Join in the York Pride Parade on June 15, attend inclusive events (including Aurora’s first ever Pride Luau on June 26), and show your support for LGBTQ2S+ rights and visibility.
Let's make this June a month to remember! Together, we can create a more inclusive, vibrant, and welcoming city for all. See you at the festivities!

Spring has kept us on our toes with a lineup of exciting events!
As April ended, we laced up our sneakers and hit the pavement for the 5k Walk for the ABLE Network. Then, on May 9th, we were thrilled to see Diego showcase his style and confidence on the runway at the Abuse Hurts Fashion show. But our involvement doesn't stop there! Throughout the entire month of May, we've been passionately raising funds in support of the Campfire Circle Sporting Life 10k. Each step, each strut, each effort has been a testament to our dedication to making a difference in our community. We're proud to be actively participating in these impactful initiatives that bring us closer together and benefit those in need.

The focus of many the programs offered by Routes is helping seniors stay connected and engaged in our community.
Our Brain Games Booklets have quickly become a staple in the community! These booklets are full of word games, puzzles & teasers to stimulate cognition, promote mental wellness & support healthy brain aging! The booklets include a mixture of crosswords, word searches, colouring pages, word scrambles, sudoku puzzles, and so much more!
Our Friendly Call program brings compassionate conversation into the lives of participants while giving volunteers an opportunity to listen and learn. Friendly Call participants and a volunteer are matched for one-on-one, weekly friendly calls. Matches are thoughtfully made based on mutual interests and hobbies, so it’s quite fun. And deeper social connections make us all a bit healthier.
Our Pen Pal program matches individuals interested in connecting through the art of writing based on mutual interests! This provides the opportunity for individuals to share letters, artwork, postcards, and stories as they develop a friendly relationship.
We are always looking for more volunteers to support our programs. This is a great way to meet new people, give back to the community, gain self-fulfillment, build your resume, and have fun doing it! For more information, please reach out to info@routescc.org

On May 16th at SilverCity in Newmarket, the Central York Chamber of Commerce "shifted" attendee's thinking when it comes to business, with inspiring talks from Jenn Harper, Justice Faith Betty, Tony Gareri, Stephen Clements, Joel MacCharles and others. The SHIFT 24 event was filled with fantastic takeaways to up level your leadership skills.
The amazing cast of the Silver Stars Theatre Group at the Aurora Seniors Centre performed the play “Cinderella - Seniorella” on May 4th and 5th, to two large audiences that thoroughly enjoyed the performances at the Seniors Centre. The Silver Stars put on plays/skits twice a year, sometimes with lots of music. Be sure not to miss out on the next one!
Established in 1971, Canadian Environment Week, June 2 to June 8, is a celebration of our accomplishments and an opportunity to create greater awareness of the challenges to be addressed. Climate change is real, and it is here, with a real cost to Canadians both economically and to our health.
Since last year’s historic wildfire season, the Government of Canada has worked closely with First Nations, provinces, territories, and other emergency management partners to complete a robust lessons-learned review. As a result, we have engaged earlier in convening wildfire emergency preparedness planning and risk assessments.
Wildfires, drought, and flooding are highly visible evidence of the risks we face from a changing climate. But the impact and challenges to our planet comes in many diverse forms. Canada is a country of vast natural resources traversing across a wide variety of landscapes – rich fertile soils to mountain ranges to vast freshwater lakes and rivers to frozen tundra with oceans on three fronts.
Ours is a landscape to be envied but also a gift in need of protection. From the air that we breathe, to the water we drink to the food we consume, we must do so in balance with nature, preserving this gift of life for future generations. Climate change, pollution and biodiversity loss threaten our ecosystems. Now is not the time to walk back on the progress we have made. Let’s keep moving forward to a healthier future.

Work at the Legislature has been very busy with lots of good news for our community.
I was proud to announce that our government is building another new Public Elementary School in East Gwillimbury, in Holland Landing, and expanding Holy Trinity Catholic High School in Bradford. These significant investments of $30 million and $6.5 million will create nearly 1,000 new student and childcare spaces. This is great news as our population continues to increase significantly.
June is Seniors Month in Ontario and I kicked off the month a little early by hosting a well-attended Seniors Appreciation Luncheon with my very special guest: Jim Parks of Mount Albert, recipient of the Ontario Seniors Achievement Award, one of only 20 seniors awarded this year. Jim Parks is a World War II Veteran and is approaching his 100th Birthday. He continues to educate younger generations about the sacrifices the greatest generation made for our freedom. Thank you, Mr. Parks.
On May 17th at Holland Landing Public School in East Gwillimbury, MPP Caroline Mulroney along with Minister Lecce announced that the Ontario government is investing $30 million in the York Region District School Board, for the new Holland Landing #1 Elementary School and $6.8 million in the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board to expand Holy Trinity Catholic High School. This will help working families in East Gwillimbury and Bradford West Gwillimbury, and will support the creation of 914 student spaces and 48 licensed child care spaces.
I want to share a special thank you to my colleague Minister for Seniors and Accessibility, Raymond Cho and my friends at the Mount Albert Legion for helping me honour Jim Parks and all our amazing seniors.
Soon it will be graduation time for many students finishing high school and going on to the next stage in life. I have been sharing congratulatory greetings to students across York-Simcoe. I want young people of the class of 2024 to know how proud the community is of their achievements. I ask them to dream big and thank their teachers, family, and friends who supported them.
On May 25th, MPP Caroline Mulroney got a jump start on Seniors Month (June) by hosting a Seniors Appreciation Luncheon at the Mount Albert Legion. Honouring a very special guest: Jim Parks of Mount Albert, recipient of the Ontario Seniors Achievement Award, 1 of only 20 seniors awarded this year. Jim Parks is a World War II Veteran having landed on the beaches of France on D Day. Mr. Parks will be attending the 80th anniversary events taking place in France, as well as a celebration of his 100th Birthday in the fall. He continues to educate younger generations about the sacrifices the greatest generation made for our freedom. Minister Raymond Cho for Seniors and Accessibility joined the festivities celebrating seniors across the region.

With the completion of the Mulock Multi-Use Path later this summer, the Town will add to its more than 44 kilometres of trails and paths, by creating a contiguous east-west connection for those on foot, bike, scooter, or wheelchair, adding new connections to amenities and some of the more than 800 acres of parkland that we are fortunate to have in Town.
This Path will be a paved trail, running from Harry Walker Parkway to Bathurst Street. It will connect the Magna Centre and skate park to the Tom Taylor Trail –the north-south trail that follows the Holland River from Aurora and East Gwillimbury – as well as the future Mulock Park.
In addition to a new trail connection, several popular events and festivals are returning this summer, giving residents opportunities to get together and connect with each other. This includes the Farmers’ Market, Pride and Canada Day Festivals, summer concert series, Moonlight Movies in the parks, and more. The paths and trails of course make it easier for some residents to get to these events. For those who prefer to drive to these events, this is getting easier too. This month the Farmers’ Market is piloting a trolley service between its location at the Riverwalk Commons and the Ray Twinney Recreation Complex, where you can park and get dropped off right at the Market.
We’ve never had as many ways to connect to all the Newmarket has to offer and each other as we’ll have this summer in Newmarket.

We’re all in agreement at Abuse Hurts in bestowing the title of Champion of the Month to Dan Wall, owner of Tim Hortons located at 1166 Davis Drive, Newmarket and his Manager, Christine Marshall.
Dan and Christine have worked together in generously donating all the food and beverages for our Delivering Hope MakeOver Day program once a month throughout the year. These refreshments are for the clients and volunteer hair stylists and makeup artists who take part in the program. Christine has done a fabulous job of providing our participants with hot coffee and tea in the morning and then topping the day off with a delicious lunch, including dessert.
Our Make-over program has been running for over 15 years and the provision of food and refreshments has remained a challenge. We prefer to provide something delicious and nutritious but it has been a struggle to find either the funds or the donors. We have had everything from pizza to amazing homemade gourmet meals and we’ve had food delivered and other times had to grocery shop and prepare, which is di cult with limited staff and resources. What was lacking was consistency and ease. It has been a joy to be able to count on Dan Wall’s location – knowing we would always have the same great food and refreshments.
Their contribution to our program is so appreciated at Abuse Hurts. Thanks again Dan and Christine for all that you do to help make these days special for our participants!

June is Seniors Month in Ontario. It’s a time to recognize the hard work older adults have done throughout their lives, and it is an opportunity to acknowledge their wisdom and invaluable contributions within our communities. The significant contributions of our seniors to the economic and social health of our communities, and the quality of life experience in Canada today, deserves appreciation and recognition.
Seniors have served, and continue to serve, as leaders, mentors, volunteers and important members of our society. Inspiring and shaping the generations that followed them.
Let's rea rm our commitment to honoring and supporting seniors, recognizing their enduring impact and essential contributions. Together, let's celebrate and express gratitude for the wealth of knowledge and experience they bring to our lives.

How do you heal your heart when your longtime beloved dogs pass? With rescues, of course. Our whole family feels rescued by our new dogs, Starr, Bentley, Rusty, and Lexi from Always Pawsible Rescue (APR). Carolynne Breedon of APR matched us and our relatives with each of these dogs, ages 3 months to 2 years when rescued. Facing very uncertain futures, (like being given away for free outside a hardware store and being chained outside with no water all day, every day) these dogs are now living their best lives with long walks, love, good health, stability and open spaces. So are we! Their love and loyalty knows no bounds after their early experiences of abandonment. - Lynne Wilson

Mikeala Haché General Manager of Etobicoke Lone StarTatlows Broiler Bar is a tiny restaurant in East Gwillimbury on Queensville Side Road, that has now been around for decades. Owner Guna Thiyagarajah, otherwise known as Chef Gee, viewed this location as an opportunity. “I kept saying, like Kevin Costner, ‘If you build it, they will come,’” he said. Here are four reasons why diners are flocking to Tatlows:
The Surprise Factor
Everyone loves a sleeper story. A hidden gem. So far hidden in the interior of the River Drive Park/Holland Landing Area of East Gwillimbury, this restaurant is a bit of a “surprise.”
Friendliness
All the people who work at Tatlows are really kind and genuine. They go above and beyond to ensure that everyone who visits has an enjoyable experience, which inturn leads to a loyal group of returning customers! The restaurant inspires fierce loyalty, with raving fans all over the EG area, spreading the word of how amazing this restaurant is.
The Food
The food is so incredibly delicious. Everything tastes like it was made with love, each dish with its own “wow” factor. On weekends, a line snakes out the door as people wait to enjoy Chef Gee’s famous variations of eggs Benedict. Not just a breakfast spot though, Tatlows also has an extensive lunch and dinner menu that includes pasta, seafood, sandwiches, salads, curries, burgers and just about everything else under the sun. On top of the lunch and dinner menu, Chef Gee has a daily special board. Regular favourites include French onion soup, crab cakes, mussels and lamb shanks.
The Feel
When you walk into Tatlows, you just feel warm, cozy, and welcomed. There is nothing extravagant about the space - but you can’t judge this book by its cover. It feels like home - and the food that you are about to eat really solidifies that homey feel.

Having felt the community’s support for nearly a decade, Owner Omar Saer is thankful to all his Cardinal Press customers over the years. He recently made the di cult decision to close the doors to Cardinal Press… but is BACK with the launch of his new business, Wayside Comics & Cocktails. As a lifelong comic book fan, owning a comic book store has always been a “pipe dream” of his, and he is super excited to be able to bring comic books back to Newmarket. To own a small business, passion is everything. Omar found that passion in Wayside Comics in 2023 and has seen both the tavern and comic shop grow in a short time, leading to his realization that his true passion is running both the bar and the comic book store, which led him to this decision to expand. For Omar, the most important thing about following his dream and o cially opening up Wayside Comics & Cocktails, is that he sees it as a way to connect with the community and really get to know their customers. The Wayside team hopes this space allows those in the community who love comic books to find like-minded people in Newmarket, hosting in-house events that encourage conversation. With bringing the community together and giving back to it among Omar’s priorities, he says they also plan to do more fundraisers in the future.
One of the goals with the shop is the ability to connect creators with customers. Going to signings at the local comic book store is a fond childhood memory of Omar’s, as it bridged the gap between looking at the work on the pages of comic books and getting to pick the brains behind the ideas and the art. Every month he intends to bring new artists to the shop, sourcing some really great talent from Fan Expo this year.
For the Pinball aficionados, Wayside Comics & Cocktails also hosts a Pinball League, every Wednesday from 6pm to 8pm. Seasons run every 2 months. The cost to play in the league is simple, just buy a drink and support the shop while you’re there!

Building Our Community Together.
This guiding principle is something I take very seriously. To represent you and be your voice at Queen’s Park, I meet with community organizations, businesses, non-pro ts, municipal partners, and residents, to better understand you and your family’s values and goals. It was a great honour to welcome Premier Ford to Newmarket—Aurora in mid-May. We toured numerous businesses in our area including STEM MINDS and TS Tech where all the staff were excited to hear from the Premier and have their picture taken with him. Some other highlights in the last few months included serving up my signature casserole at Inn From the Cold, and taking part in important cultural events like Holi, the Hindu Festival of Colours, a Nowruz, Persian New Year celebration with SIMA (Seniors Iranian Multicultural Association), and the Iftar dinner held during Ramadan with members of the Newmarket Islamic Centre. On International Women’s Day we honoured some incredible people that contribute so much to our community. The work these women do is truly inspiring. From entrepreneurs to leaders of local non-pro t organizations to promoting women in the skilled trades, I was thrilled to recognize these women. Then we got busy and decorated a lot of very happy cookies. Not only did we grin a lot, but we also laughed and had a great time participating in the Smile Cookies campaign, with all local proceeds going to the Canadian Mental Health Association York Region and South Simcoe.
Check out my social media platforms to see the other wonderful residents, events, tours and announcements - all happening right here in Newmarket—Aurora, as I love to share all of our collective local experiences. I look forward to continuing our journey in Building Our Community Together.
