From the first time that he tasted the amazing wood fired pizza at that ‘little booth at the Newmarket Farmer’s Market’, it became a ‘must have’ every Saturday morning. Little did Tim McClure know that a decade later, he would own the company, along with his partner, Ketty Berton. Tim and Ketty built their careers as well-respected leaders, both having over 30 years’ of experience working with world-renowned brands in the banking, licensed sports apparel, and luxury fashion businesses. While they enjoyed their individual, past successes, there was always something that intrigued them about owning their own small business together. In 2021, they purchased Ella’s Oven and after a complete rebranding, Mulberry’s Oven was launched.

Aside from building their own loyal following at the market, Mulberry’s has become a highly sought-after partner for event organizers, being asked to serve at corporate functions, private events, weddings, and golf tournaments. Aside from their partnership with the market, Mulberry’s formed an agreement with Old Flame Brewing Co. and, more recently, Wine On Main. Giving back to charitable organizations and supporting local sports groups such as the Newmarket Soccer Club are important priorities for Mulberry’s.

The way that they ‘show up’ at prestigious golf, corporate, and private events within the GTA has gained the attention of many well-known organizations. The fact that they have secured a partnership with Adidas Canada is a true testament to how Tim and Ketty have positioned the Mulberry’s brand. Mulberry’s now employs 16 local residents, including 9 students. One of the most famous members of their team is Mully – the big, cuddly, lovable teddy bear that spreads kindness and love to kids, adults, and seniors throughout the community.

Just as we were starting to see mortgage interest rates begin to decline, the booming housing prices and recent reports caused the Bank of Canada to raise benchmark lending rates ... again.

Here's the conundrum, Mortgage interest is now one of the biggest drivers of inflation! In a twist of irony, the Bank of Canada’s interest rate hikes—meant to slow the economy and bring down inflation—are now one of the leading upward contributors to inflation.

For my excel worksheet enthusiasts, you could easily see the makings of a CIRCULAR REFERENCE ERROR.

Mortgage interest costs have skyrocketed following 4.5 percentage points worth of Bank of Canada rate increases since last March.

As a sub-component of the consumer price index basket of inflation measures, mortgage interest cost was up 28.5% year-over-year as of April.

It’s a category that is now putting strong upward pressure on inflation. Another is homeowners’ replacement costs, which includes the cost of new homes, which was up 8.4% from last year, although its growth has been slowing due to the softening real estate market. Other current contributors to inflation include food (+8.3%), gas (+6.3%) and rent (+6.1%).

BMO economist Robert Kavcic said rises in rent (+6.1% year-over-year) and mortgage interest costs flow into CPI inflation readings gradually, but that "upward pressure there is now strong and persistent.”

In another note, BMO chief economist Douglas Porter was more direct: "Many will thus point to the BoC as the ’cause’ of inflation.”

Personal Care Tips for Summer

As summer approaches, it’s important to prioritize personal care amidst our busy family lives. With kids’ activities and family outings, self-care often takes a backseat. However, a few essential habits can ensure the well-being and enjoyment of your family during the summer season. Here are some tips to keep everyone healthy.

Protect Your Family’s Skin from the summer Sun: This is essential. Regardless of the weather, apply sunscreen with a high SPF on everyone before heading outdoors. Don't forget to reapply every two hours, especially during water play or when sweating. Encourage your family to wear sun-protective clothing, hats, and sunglasses for added defense against harmful UV rays. Prioritizing sun safety keeps everyone safe and enjoying the summer fun.

Keep Hydrated: Family adventures can lead to increased thirst and potential dehydration. Ensure everyone stays hydrated by carrying water bottles and encouraging regular water breaks throughout the day. Pack hydrating snacks like watermelon or grapes for outings. Limit sugary drinks and opt for water as the go-to choice. By prioritizing hydration, you'll keep your family energized and ready to make the most of the summer activities.

Beat The Heat: Managing the summer heat is crucial for family comfort. Seek shade during outdoor activities, whether at parks or backyard gatherings, to protect everyone from excessive heat exposure. Dress in lightweight, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics to promote air circulation. Utilize fans or air conditioning indoors to create a cool and comfortable environment. Plan outdoor adventures during cooler times of the day to ensure your family's enjoyment and safety.

Prioritize personal care this summer. By shielding your family’s skin, keeping them hydrated, and managing the heat, you will create a fun and memorable summer season.

Can Staging Help Me Sell My Home?

Staging a home before putting it up for sale has numerous benefits that can greatly increase the likelihood of a successful sale at a higher price point. By making strategic adjustments to a home’s décor and layout, professional stagers create an environment that maximizes the home’s positive features and minimizes its negative attributes. Here are some of the main benefits of home staging:

First and foremost, staged homes tend to sell faster than those that are not staged. This is because a staged home will make a great impression on potential buyers, allowing them to envision themselves living in that space. Buyers are more likely to make an offer on a home that feels welcoming, clean, and well-maintained. Additionally, staging helps to highlight key features of the property, such as spacious rooms or updated appliances, which can be easily overlooked otherwise.

In addition to selling faster, staged homes also tend to sell at a higher price point. By showcasing the home in the best possible light, staging adds perceived value to the property, which can prompt buyers to offer more for it. It is important to keep in mind that buyers will be comparing the home to others they have seen on the market, so staging can really make a difference in standing out from the competition.

Finally, staging a home can make the selling process less stressful for the homeowner. By working with a professional stager, the homeowner can benefit from their expertise in creating a welcoming, attractive environment that will appeal to buyers. This can take the pressure off the homeowner to figure out how to stage the home themselves and allow them to focus on other aspects of the sale, such as working with their agent or preparing for the move.

Overall, staging is a valuable tool that homeowners can use to improve the chances of a successful sale at a higher price point. With the help of a professional stager, even a modest home can be transformed into a showpiece that will leave a lasting impression on potential buyers.

Abuse

It would be impossible for Abuse Hurts to single out one person as Champion of the Month for July and that’s because sometimes it takes a collective effort to make great things happen. In June, Abuse Hurts held a Spring fashion event, Designing Hope Fashion Affair…with an Italian Flair which was a huge success. But what an undertaking it was to bring all the elements together. The only way to reach that goal was with an army of volunteers. We’d like to acknowledge that army - from the leadership of an amazing event committee to the individuals that signed up to help in any way they could. We tip our hats and salute you!

Our incredible fundraising committee, of which all members got on board for the fashion show, also became the ‘event committee’ spearheaded by Teresa Kruze. We thank every one of them (you can find the list of names on our website under “…Events/Designing_Hope”. It was a lot of work but so much FUN with such a supportive creative and positive group of women.

Finally, the individual volunteers (names can also be found on the same web page) who weathered the tide and the waves and the wind…and went with the flow as the event evolved right before our eyes the night of. There are always unexpected circumstances and our fabulous volunteers ran with the changes like true champions. We are so thankful for this ‘collective’ as they helped produce something we never could have managed on our own.

CANADA DAY!

Happy Canada Day from Michael Parsa

As we approach the joyous occasion of Canada Day, it is a great moment to reflect on the significance of this beloved holiday. Canada Day holds great importance for all Canadians, as we reflect on our nation's history, celebrate our shared values, and express gratitude for the blessings of living in this country. As Ontario's Minister of Children, Community and Social Services and your MPP for Aurora-Oak Ridges-Richmond Hill, I invite you to join me in celebrating this special occasion.

Canada Day provides us with a valuable opportunity to reconnect with loved ones, friends and family over festivities. As the long weekend approaches, let us take the time to gather with our community to celebrate what we love the most about our wonderful country - either by gathering to watch fireworks, going to a community event, visiting a historical monument or enjoying a day at a national park.

Ontario stands out as a remarkable place to celebrate Canada Day. As we celebrate Canada Day, we recognize our province’s diverse communities, stunning landscapes, and cultural treasures. I take pride in this land we call home, for we live in the best province in the best country in the world - without a doubt because of the incredible residents who have formed and contributed to its vibrant social, cultural and economic fabric.

I extend my warmest wishes for a fantastic Canada Day weekend. May this time be filled with joy, laughter, and a renewed appreciation for living in this great nation. Happy Canada Day!

Michael Parsa MPP - Aurora, Oakridges, Richmond Hill, hosted his annual BBQ on Ontario Day (June 9th) at Richmond Green Sports Centre & Park. The event included free food, activities and music! Fun for the whole family. Cobs Bread Aurora hosted a community charity BBQ on June 11th outside of their store, in support of CHATS. Cobs Bread supports our local charities daily by donating bread at the end of each day. As well as several times of year through their doughnation days and pop up charity events. Ben Tobin

What are your top 3 favourite movies?

Definitely: Harry Potter, Phineas & Ferb, and Monsters vs Aliens. What does being a good neighbour mean to you? It means to help and support each other.

If you were a superhero, what would your powers be, and why? My super power would be love. If someone is upset I can make them instantly happy, because I have so much love to give.

What is your favourite sport? Do you play for any local teams? I play baseball, I am a Newmarket hawk! My team is awesome, and my dad is my coach, he’s the best.

What is your favourite song, artist/group or genre of music?

My favourite song is “High Hopes” by Panic at the Disco. I did a percussion performance of this song with my class, it just makes me smile and dance.

Greg Jones

What is your favourite season (winter, spring, summer, fall), and why?

My job is seasonal so I would say summer because it's warm, the trees are green and I love the

What is your favourite food?

Anything BBQ'd and everything free.

How long have you lived in the community?

I have lived in Newmarket for 4 years now, it's a friendly neighbourhood to live in.

If you were a superhero, what would your powers be, and why?

My powers would be super strength, the ability to fly and prune trees with my mind.

If you could give advice to your younger self, what would it be? Don't dye your hair blue!

Vaughan Moult

What is your most memorable community moment?

Co-leading a pain management workshop as a volunteer with Southlake Hospital, I really came to understand the value of volunteering.

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?

Tuscany, Italy. It is a lush green area with incredible culture in every direction and some of the finest wines in the world. It’s central to most of Europe, with the ability to move around the country on high-speed rail.

What is your favorite food?

Italian food. It’s simple, yet complex in its taste. What more could one ask for. Plus, it is family oriented. What is your favourite season, and why?

Fall is my favourite time of year. The warm days and cool nights are more comfortable than the summer heat. The trees change colour and put on an incredible display.

What is your favourite holiday to celebrate?

Christmas. It is special for many reasons, but mostly for the gathering of family. It is magical to see the wide eyes of children as they help decorate the tree and watch the train as it circles the Christmas village display. It’s also a time to give. This year will mark the 50th annual Christmas Parade in Mount Albert, put on by the Mount Albert Lions.

Exciting Summer Ahead in Downtown Newmarket

I’m excited to take in all that Newmarket’s downtown has to offer this Summer, including the Farmers' Market, TD Music Series, the festivals, and the patios. The area was bustling during the Pride and Artisans’ Festivals. Those crowds are certain to return for Canada Day.

With several new businesses enjoying their first summer on Main St., some switching locations, and the first phase of the Postmark Hotel opening soon, downtown will be more vibrant than ever in the coming months. And with a new restaurant taking over the old Cachet location later this year, along with parking being added once the new tennis centre opens, our downtown is poised to continue being a go-to location for Newmarket and York Region.

Main St. is amazing because of the sustained, consistent, and deliberate efforts of everyone involved in the downtown to make it great. By constantly striving to balance the diverse needs of all businesses and customers we have created a place that is defining what our community is all about and where more and more people want to be.

If you haven’t been to Main St., now is the time to check it out. I’ll see you there this Summer.

NEIGHBOURHOOD Charity Highlight

Dog Tales is a world-renowned dog rescue and horse sanctuary set on an incredible 50 acres of green fields, rolling hills, and wooded areas in King City. Founded in 2014, our picturesque locationcomplete with kilometers of walking trails, therapy pools, and a grooming spa - is the perfect setting for abused and neglected animals to heal and be rehabilitated while they wait for forever homes. Along with medical care, our team provides all of the love, attention and training that our rescues need to recover from their di cult pasts, so that they can move on to permanent, loving homes, which most do. For the rest, Dog Tales is home for as long as they need it to be.

Our luxurious kennel space is one of the things that sets Dog Tales apart from any other rescue in the world. We believe that our dogs deserve all of the comforts of home while they wait for their forever homes, and wanted to create a space that contrasted the idea of the cold, stark shelter that we all have grown so accustomed to. A fun, decorated environment filled with happy dogs makes it easier for guests to repeatedly visit until they find that perfect dog, without leaving feeling emotionally drained each time.

Open House - Every Sunday from 12pm - 4pm

We welcome you to come view our grounds and meet some of our animals in need of homes. Each open house has a different theme with photoshoot opportunities and more! Please refrain from bringing your current pet(s). Visiting Dog Tales is free of charge, but you are welcome to make a donation for your visit.

Kennel Viewings from 12pm-2pm Meet & Greets from 12pm-4pm Farm Tours offered on select Sundays from 12:30pm - 1pm

We do not profit from our rescue efforts, and your support means the world to us. All donations received go directly towards:

• The rescue, rehabilitation and adoption of animals who have been neglected, abused, and abandoned across Canada and abroad.

• Animals who are suffering from injury or illness and need immediate medical treatment.

• Vet costs and more.

Donations are accepted via Paypal at dogtales.ca/donate

We are currently in need of gently used blankets. We cannot accept ones with rips or tears, which can be dangerous for the animals. Donations can be dropped off outside of the o ce every day between 8am and 8pm.

Adoptions are unfortunately very low, so we encourage potential adopters to take this opportunity to meet our sweet pups and hopefully find their next future family member! If there is someone specific you would like to meet, please fill out the adoption application to book a private appointment. 1405 dogtales.ca

Building Our Community Together

2023 Update from MPP Dawn Gallagher Murphy

Since my last review, I have been honoured to attend many inspiring local events, including: Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association’s Explore Islam Exhibition, Black History Month Gala and presenting the ABC Music Award to George St. Kitts, hosted a Non-Profit Appreciation week event recognizing 22 of our amazing community partners for all the work they do to support our residents, participating in the Nature’s Emporium Run for Southlake, and hosting a community viewing of King Charles III coronation.

Ontario’s non-profit sector is the largest in Canada, with over 58,000 registered charities and non-profit organizations that offer a wide range of services to children, families and seniors including mental health support, seniors’ services, homeless shelters, services for people who have experienced violence, skills development, specialized help for children, support for people with disabilities, and family support services to programs that promote arts and culture, environmental sustainability and recreation. I was honoured to host an event in Newmarket on February 16th to thank the staff and volunteers of twenty-two of our local non-profit organizations for everything they do to help build a strong community. I thanked them for their incredible work and dedication to our community members.

Thrilled to host my first Seniors Month Community Connections Expo at the beginning of June in Newmarket. The goal of this event was to bring together organizations that seek to support, serve, and engage seniors in our community. Together with the Minister of Seniors and Accessibility, Raymond Cho, and his Parliamentary Assistant, Daisy Wai, we hosted a roundtable to hear from seventeen organizations from across Newmarket—Aurora and discuss how we can further assist them in their goals to support seniors. Looking forward to next year’s expo.

Since January 2023, I have had the pleasure of sharing funding announcements across Newmarket Aurora riding including:

• An investment of $36.7M to the Municipality of York Region in the homelessness prevention program which represented a 76% increase in annual funding.

• Over $30 million in additional one-time funding to support York Region Public Health with the extraordinary costs incurred while working to prevent, monitor, detect, and contain COVI-19 in the region.

• Girls Inc. York Region received two grants through the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) totaling over $400,000 to assist with after school programs.

• Bluedoor received a $349,000 OTF grant to help them recover from COVID-19 through OTF.

• Newmarket African Caribbean Canadian Association (NACCA) received an OTF grant of $167,100 over two years.

• More than $145,000 to Marquee Theatrical Productions through the OTF Resilient Communities Fund grant.

• A Resilient Communities Fund grant of $104,000 to the CMHA.

• $102,876 split between Town of Aurora Seniors Centre and Town of Newmarket.

• CAYR Community Connections received a $12,900 OTF Resilient Communities Fund grant.

It is with great honour that I represent the people and families of Newmarket—Aurora at Queen’s Park. Have a wonderful summer and I look forward to seeing you out in the community!
